Welcome to Amber Valley Voice Hello and welcome to the March edition of Amber Valley Voice and an extra big welcome to all our new advertisers this month.
3
Don’t forget to mention the Voice when you use any of the companies in this Magazine
This edition will cover April as well because I will be taking the remainder of March and most of April to align the Alfreton & Broadmeadows magazine to this edition for May, so I won’t see you next month….but worry not because there is plenty going on to keep you occupied, including all the offers that our wonderful advertisers have devised just for you.
As spring is just about here, we’ve taken you on a slightly longer dog walk this month but it is beautiful, especially with all the flowers coming through and when the sun is shining! We have lots of local charities hosting events and fundraisers over March and April, so check those out on page 6 & 7. Also, St James Church Riddings is hosting some fantastic events, an Easter Eggstravaganza and a chocolate bingo evening, details on pages 13 & 14...well worth a look. Happy Reading and see you in May!

Book Review Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin
Amos Mississippi is not the kind of southern American town where good ol’ boys sip mint juleps on a steamy verandah. There’s dark secrets in the decaying rural south of Tom Franklin’s novel Crooked Letter Crooked Letter. Secrets which speak of friendship and betrayal, and tensions of race and class. The story centres around the disappearance of a girl; then, 20 years later, the disappearance of another. The strange middle class white boy who’s accused but never convicted of abducting the irst girl turns into Scary Larry, ostracised by the community, living a lonely and odd life on a farm with a barnful of hens named after Presidents’ wives for company. Silas, the poor black boy with whom he struck up an unlikely friendship back in the day, has returned to town as its only law enforcement of icer. When Larry is shot and put on life support, there isn’t just the question of ‘who done it’, but what does it mean for Silas and Larry. This tale unravels beautifully. The plot spins along but a lot of the pleasure comes from the characters and humour, the dialogue and a melancholy sense of place and atmosphere – all of which Tom Franklin nails perfectly. The title – in case you’re wondering – comes from the way southern children are taught to spell Mississippi. M, I, crooked letter, crooked letter, I, crooked letter, crooked letter, I, humpback, humpback, I.

16 Here is the third instalment of our favourite dog walks in the local area. This walk starts off on Peak Avenue in Riddings taking you across ields to Butterly, then around Butterley Reservoir, before bringing you back around Midland Railway and through ields to where you started. I hope you enjoy this walk and please remember if you have a local walk you would like to share please let us know by email at info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638 Circular walk from Peak Avenue via Butterley Reservoir (Approx. 4.5miles) Another great walk for you and your dog it offers a range of scenery and plenty of off-lead walking. The route is around 4 1/2 miles long, taking approx. 2 to 2 1/2 hours. It is fairly flat with some small uphill sections and the terrain is mixed with some sections which can be fairly muddy if it has been wet. This walk begins On the corner of Peak Avenue, Riddings, Near Peveril Drive. On the corner there is a jitty which leads to a wooden bridge. Cross the bridge and walk straight ahead across four fields keeping the hedge on your right. You will pass through two gates before walking up a small hill towards a white house. Follow the track keeping the white house on your right this will take you through a few more fields until you get to a trough in a corner of a field. Turn left and after about 50 meters use a stile to cross the fence. Carry on ahead, keeping the hedge on your left. At the corner of this field cross the stile and walk on until you get to the Ripley International Airfield sign. Turn right towards Butterley Grange, with the conifers on your left hand side. At the end of the track keep to the left around the outside of the farm house and follow the track with the red brick wall on your right. Follow this “Dog Walks in Amber Valley” are track around to the right, keeping Butterley Grange on your right, until it brings fuelled by Millers dog food and you to Derby road. Cross the road with care, then turn right, heading towards Swanwick. Shortly after you pass the mine cart planters there is a path on the left, which comes at a gap in the metal barriers. Follow the path as it winds through a lightly wooded area towards the reservoir. Continue along the path around the outside of the reservoir. After a short while you will come to an area where the old railway crosses the reservoir. Bear right up the steps onto the rail track and cross, re-joining the path that follows around the reservoir.

Start End
At the end of this road turn left onto Derby Road, in the direction of Swanwick. Cross the road when safe and take a right onto Coach Road. Almost immediately take a left through a metal gate. Bear right down onto the field On the field follow the wide track that runs through the middle, As you get towards the end of the field bear right exiting the field at the top right hand corner. Cross the old railway track and pass through a makeshift stile and into another field. Head across this field on the path, past the helicopter pad on your left up to the corner of the field. Cross the stile and turn left on Coach Road. Walk along the Coach Road for a short while. As you approach a red brick house on your right you will find a stile in the hedge on your left. Although there is no clear path head diagonally across the field to the far corner, where you will find a stile. Cross the stile and walk down a short path towards the road. Cross the road and take another stile, crossing a small field. Taking another stile head into the Jubilee Woods and head straight ahead towards a green fence. Bear right and follow the path by the fence, keeping the fence on your left. Shortly you will meet the railway track again. Cross this and follow the path down under the railway bridge bringing you out onto Slack Lane. Turn left, passing under another railway bridge. Carry on along the path through four fields uphill towards the white house you passed early on in the walk. At the white house follow the path back the way you came keeping the hedge on your left until you arrive back at beginning.

25 How is your new Healthy Eating New Year’s Resolution going? If you are not seeing as much change as you would like, you will bene it from a posture exercise which will immediately make you look slimmer and is great at highlighting muscle imbalances which can cause back and neck pain and joint wear and tear. And it only takes 2 minutes... Stand with your back and buttocks against a wall and your feet facing forward about 4 inches from the wall. Bring your shoulder blades back so they are lying lat against the wall, then contract your tummy muscles to prevent any arching of your back (you should have a couple of ingers width between the small of your back and the wall). Have your hands by your sides, thumbs facing forward and stretch your ingers towards the loor, and push your head back against the wall, keeping your chin parallel with the loor, i.e. avoid tilting your chin upwards. Hold this position and relax into it; be aware of tension, e.g. locking out your knees and breathe slowly, focusing on all the above in turn. After a minute, step away from the wall. You should be standing taller, look as though you have lost 4lbs and feel great! If you had problems with any part of this exercise, you may have muscle imbalances which are putting unnecessary strain on your body-causing tiredness-yes muscles working hard trying to pull you back into alignment use a lot of energy. Tight muscles can also cause discomfort or pain and increase pressure on joints causing the cartilage to wear more quickly. Doing this exercise regularly helps raise awareness of your posture and there is evidence that good posture not only contributes to good muscle and joint health, but also aids good digestion and actually helps you to feel good psychologically: your body position can affect how you are feeling! To test this, try slumping and see how you feel, then straighten up- doesn't life seem a bit easier?

DVD Review Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy(12)
26
This adaptation of the John Le Carre novel is fantastically acted but feels a little slow. The story unravels the web that a mole has created in the ‘Circus’, which is the highest level of the secret service. George Smiley (Gary Oldman) is the man who is left to decipher the complex tale that has developed within the team that he has worked with for so many years. This all star cast including acclaimed actors such as John Hurt, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch to name but a few and of course, the Oscar nominated Gary Oldman for this performance, really made this ilm for me. Perhaps true to life considering the ield and the time, the cast is male centric with only Kathy Burke featuring brie ly as the sole female character and overall it may appeal more to men as they may identify with characters more readily. Driven by the plot rather than the characters, it is an intelligent thriller of espionage and double crossing but if you are expecting fast paced excitement, you will be disappointed and I found myself wanting to understand the reasons ‘why’ as opposed to ‘how’ which were never explained to my satisfaction.

Gardeners Calendar - March If you haven’t already done it, the irst lawn cut is about due. Rake wormcasts into the lawn irst, as top dressing and set the blades high. Snowdrops in the green, (with their leaves still alive) can be lifted, split and replanted to create more clumps for next year. At the end of the month you can plant out chitted (sprouted) “ irst early” spuds. They should be ready in June.
Top Tip
If you take photos of your daffs and other spring bulbs in lower you’ll know where to bulk them up when it comes to planting again in autumn.

Are you a Hero?
Calling all Heroes in Amber Valley
Mencap are hoping to ind 30 heroes in Amber Valley to sign up to do a tandem skydive in September 2012 at Langar Air ield in Nottingham. Marie at Mencap says “ I always resisted the temptation as I was scared stiff but I eventually did it for my 40th birthday and was the 200th person that they have thrown out of a plane so far. I have to tell you that it was the most exhilarating, fantastic, amazing thing I have ever done and I would thoroughly recommend that everyone tries it at least once in their lifetime.” The money we raise at this jump in September will be directly supporting people with a learning disability locally and my team are here to help you every step of the way. We’ll be there on the day to hold your handbag or keep the rest of the family busy, so become a hero….sign up today and ind out more.
