As usual the mags are choc-full again this month and with the improving weather it’s the perfect time to try a new hobby or activity or get along to one of the great events, whether you want to try your hand at sailing or launch a rubber duck down the Derwent, so make sure you check out ‘Things To Do’! A big part of the joy of doing these magazines is seeing new businesses start-up and grow. In fact we have even had a few advertisers take a break from the magazines as they’re just too busy! All these local businesses are local people, so remember every time you shop local you are supporting real people and their families in your community. On that note Congratulations to Charles of CB IT who has opened a new store in Alfreton. He has been advertising for a while now and it’s great to see him doing so well (see page 13 for more info). Finally, a quick foster-dog update. Flake is here and he is a little charmer! This one is going to be hard to part with I can tell you!

Another thank-you also goes out for all the kind words we have received on our new Selston, Pinxton, Jacksdale & Westwood magazine. There’s a lot goes into putting a new mag out so I want you all to know how much we appreciate the lovely feedback. As our magazines continue to grow (keep an eye out Crich!) we find ourselves in need of a little help here at Voice HQ and we’re looking for a new sales person to help Dave and I build on our fantastic band of loyal advertisers. The role will be shared with a fantastic I.T company who are really going places quickly, so if you have the gift of the gab, are full of enthusiasm and keen to learn, why not drop us a line and let’s talk! (See page 4 for more details). On that note, we are still looking for a distributor in Blackwell, so if you are interested or know anyone who might be, give us a tinkle via the details below.
Our dedicated team, including Funeral Directors Anthony Topley and Helen Ellis, and Funeral Arranger Danni Allen, are available to meet with you to discuss funeral arrangements or funeral planning either at our premises or in your own home.

I hope you all love our funky front covers this month! They are a special design to celebrate Star Wars day. For those who don’t know it’s May 4th i.e. “May the fourth (force) be with you”. A big thank-you goes out to Angie of Alfdesigns.co.uk who produces these brilliant pictures as part of her @PurpleTrees_Alf profile on twitter – give her a follow for more of the same, she really is very talented!

Mandy’s Travel Page There are so many amazing places in the world and in my job I seem to be in a different part of the world every day; working on your bucket lists and dream holidays or simply getting you the best deal for your annual holiday or a quick romantic getaway. I can help you with it all. Last month I was telling you all about visiting Liverpool, prior to that we have gone Cruising and before that we went to India and Florida. So as we embark upon the traditional holiday season, beautiful Bali springs into my mind, as I recently had an enquiry. The couple told me they wanted to see elephants, monkeys and temples with some time on the beach. Here is the Itinerary I have suggested for them: Ubud is in many ways the cultural heart of Bali and a great place for a 4 night stay. It’s in the mountains, but only an hour away from the airport. Seminyak is Bali’s most stylish and upscale beach resort. It has the chic restaurants, hotels and boutique shopping. In the evening it has a lively classy nightlife scene.
Voice Magazines & Affirm IT are looking for a:
Kuta Beach is Bali’s most famous beach. A once simple & quiet fishing village is now a very busy place with lots of traffic, attracting visitors especially the surfers. It has an exciting nightlife scene with all the bars and nightclubs with international DJ’s. This isn’t the place if you are looking for peace and quiet.
Sales Representative Full Time – 39 hours per week
Sanur Beach is one of Bali’s original beach resorts. It has retained its original charm and attracts mainly European visitors. It has a lower key, laidback atmosphere compared to the other beaches I’ve mentioned, as well as a wealth of arts and culture.
The role will be split across two businesses; one based in South Normanton, one in Heanor. Both workplaces offer a fantastic opportunity for the right person to learn and grow, earning a good starting salary with significant potential for career development. We are looking for a self-motivated natural communicator who is resilient, highly driven and eager to learn and develop. Applicants with previous sales experience preferred. Salary: From circa. £18k per annum (depending on experience)
As you can see, all the hard work of research and planning has been done and all they have to do now, like all my clients, is sit back and enjoy their stress free holiday! I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you are away in the event of an emergency.

Slimming World Recipe Speedy Chicken and Vegetable Rice I often find the hardest thing to do when trying to lose weight is avoid a cheeky takeaway. Well Slimming World have a few tricks up their sleeves when it comes to this. Why not try this recipe or get down to one of their groups to hear about their fabulous ‘fakeaways’.
Method: 1. Spray a large non-stick frying pan or wok with low calorie cooking spray and place over a medium high heat. Add the garlic, ginger and stir-fry vegetables and stir-fry for 4-5 minutes. 2. Turn the heat to high and stir in the cooked rice and shredded chicken. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes or until piping hot. 3. Add the soy sauce, stir-fry for 30 seconds and then drizzle over the beaten egg. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until the egg has scrambled. 4. Remove from the heat and stir in the spring onions. Serve immediately garnished with spring onion slivers. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk

Book Review
Maggie O’Farrell’s This Must Be The Place moves with some speed between time and continents and characters to tell an unusual but affecting love story. You need to keep a close eye on the dates and names of the narrators at the beginning of chapters and be prepared to see it as a sort of jigsaw puzzle where bits suddenly fall into place and explain what’s going on. It takes some concentration. But what makes it worth the effort is O’Farrell’s insightful emotional understanding of what holds relationships together and what also drives them apart. She’s won loads of book awards for previous novels and it shows in the depth of her writing. This novel is the story of a successful film actress who has turned into a recluse quite early in her career – and of the man who inadvertently comes into her life without knowing anything about her fame. Claudette is, by any standards, a bit eccentric, beautiful but prone to dressing like a bag lady and liable to go totally over the top at any moment. As her husband says “her default setting is over-reaction and outrage”. Daniel, on the other hand seems like the voice of sanity. But then, with O’Farrell’s characters it’s a case of now you see them, now they’re off in another direction. There’s lots of humour, although some of it may be wry, and this turns into a perceptive, moving and satisfyingly involving tale.

Hello Everyone....I’m Rubble and I am a big snuggle monster. I am looking for my forever home, where I get the love and reassurance that I need the most. I do get worried about the world and feel like I need to bark to communicate how I feel. So I really need a calm, reassuring, patient, loving owner to help me relax, build my confidence and see the world as fun place to be without being worried and I will repay you with lots and lots of cuddles and snuggles! If you think you could be my perfect home, then please give the Nottinghamshire center a call to book an appointment to meet me!

Rambles with Rafa So Rafa was back to flying solo this month as we’re between foster dogs for this walk. However, it was not for long as our latest foster pup, Flake, is in place and should be with us when we do next month’s walk. Thanks again to David at JH Legal for this fantastic walk. He continues to wander far and wide as he brings us the best spots in the local area for a fantastic day out. And with the weather improving it’s the perfect time to get out and explore the local area. This month our walk begins at Carr’s Park, which is a great spot for a picnic if you are so inclined. The walk takes you out of Warsop and out towards Sherwood Forest for a walk-in-the-woods before heading back into Warsop and through Carr Park, alongside the river.
6.5-mile circular walk from The Carrs Park
A mid-distance walk which should take you and your dog around 3 hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. Even with the improving weather there may be some uneven and muddy terrain, so please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.
Start: The Carrs Park, Church Road Parking, Church Road, Church Warsop. NG20 0SF 1. Head back through car park entrance and turn left along the main road for a short distance, then turn right onto a main road signposted for ‘Meden Vale’. Continue along this road for some distance and then take the first right into ‘Manor Court’. 2. Continue to walk to the very end of this road and continue straight ahead onto a tarmac footpath threading between the houses. Follow the tarmac path around the back of the houses to pass through a large wooden gate and turn right along a road.
3. Continue until reaching a T-junction of roads. Turn right and then continue straight ahead to cross over a river bridge. Shortly after, at a T junction, turn left to continue along a single-track road. Pass a farm on your right and then continue for some distance until reaching a gated single-track road on your right. 4. Turn right to pass by the large metal gate and continue uphill. At the top of the hill pass over a railway bridge and then continue straight ahead. Eventually the road turns into a bumpy lane.
5. As you continue along the lane you will pass by a water treatment plant with a chain link fence on your left. When the fence on your left comes to an end, bear left and downhill to continue along the lane. Continue to the bottom of the hill and then begin to gently climb for some distance before reaching a crossroads of lanes.
6. Continue straight ahead keeping a hedge on your left and open fields on your right. Eventually the lane narrows into a footpath and begins to drop downhill towards some trees. Continue straight ahead into the trees passing through some metal posts and then ignoring a footpath to your right continue ahead keeping trees on your right and open views to your left.
open views directly in front of you. Turn right and then after a very short distance turn left to continue along a farm track with a hedge on your right.
11. Continue along the farm track with a hedge on your right for a long distance. Prior to reaching a rail bridge directly in front of you and at a signposted footpath on your right, turn sharp left to continue along a signposted bridleway and farm track with a hedge on both sides. After a short distance continue ahead going uphill with a hedge on your right and open views to your left.
12. At the top of the hill the track narrows down into a footpath with a hedge on both sides. Continue straight ahead until dropping into a dip and then turn right along a footpath going gently downhill. After some distance pass underneath a rail bridge and eventually reach a road. Cross straight over the road to continue along a narrow lane.
13. After a short distance you will reach a road. Continue straight ahead to go downhill along Sandy Lane. At the bottom of the hill, at a T-junction of roads, turn left and continue for a short distance and then turn right along Hetts Lane. 14. Continue straight ahead to a T-junction with a main road. Cross straight over the main road to continue straight ahead along a wide tarmac footpath with a wall on your left and a fence on your right. After a short distance continue straight ahead to cross over a river bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge turn right to follow footpath with the river on your right.
15. Continue to wind along the footpath with the river on your right until reaching the car park and starting point.
7. Continue for some distance and then pass by a signposted bridleway on your left. Continue straight ahead going downhill until reaching the bottom of the hill and a signposted crossroads of footpaths. Turn right going gently uphill along a tarmac path and continue straight ahead for a long distance until reaching a track on your left.
8. At this point, ignore the track on your left and continue a little further to a yellow marker post and a track on your right. Turn right along the track and after a very short distance curl around to the left. Continue along the track for quite some distance and then ignore a track on your left to continue straight ahead. 9. After some distance ignore a signposted footpath directly ahead of you and bear around to the right to continue along the track going downhill. At the bottom of the hill cross straight over a crossroad of tracks to continue straight ahead along a footpath going into some trees.
10. Continue for some distance and at a crossroads of footpaths continue straight ahead along a footpath with trees on your right and open views to your left. Continue until reaching a T-junction of paths with This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times. Saving the Planet
I had a big response to the suggestion from George that I relayed to you last month. He was essentially asking if, once the Union of Clever & Intelligent People (UCIP) had a working majority at Westminster, would legislation be introduced ensuring that only men had the power to alter the thermostat settings on any domestic or workplace based central heating system.
“Ah’m no happy aboot whit yir proposin’ to dae aboot thermostat control bein’ a joab fur men only.” By way of explanation, you ought to know that Morag was brought up in Kirkintilloch! She went on to tell me that “Ma man, Angus, can be affa cruel sometimes and whan ah turn the heatin’ up a degree, he jist gaes an’ opens anither windae.”
Broadly speaking, from the letters, texts and emails that I’ve received or conversations that I’ve had, it would appear as if approximately 50% of the population would be in favour with the other half (and that was often the appropriate description – just think about it!) steadfastly against.
These two examples, whilst possibly a bit extreme, are typical of the sort of response I’ve had. Clearly, to combat the effects of manmade influence on climate change, and ensure that our grandchildren still have a planet to live on, something has to be done. The problem for UCIP however, is that if they promote the type of policy that George advocates, it looks as if they’ll alienate just as many voters as they are likely to attract.
To give you a flavour, here’s what Jeremy had to say. UCIP would definitely get my vote if this eminently sensible proposal was one of the key elements of their manifesto. For far too long, we’ve been needlessly wasting valuable finite resources ensuring that half the population are comfortable at home or at work. It’s got to the stage where I no longer suggest ‘just put your coat and gloves on my pet if you’re feeling a bit chilly’, whilst I’m sitting in my armchair ay home wearing just a vest and shorts. As the thermostat is raised a couple of notches I now just mutter a little under my breath and................... take off my vest. To balance this I was stopped in the street last week by Morag who ‘bent my ear’ as she told me............
NB – George, who has all the makings of a future Minister for the Environment in a UCIP led government, has come forward with another radical proposal to help ‘save the planet’. Bet you (ladies in particular!) can’t wait to hear that. All will be revealed in June.
~ This month’s quiz is a little easier than normal. Well it is inasmuch as you’ve only got eight answers to find when I ask you to name the planets (probably all at risk in some way or another) in our solar system. As ever, answers below.
Working away from the Sun we have Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ May 2018
DRB
It’s plants for free time again – and don’t we all like that? Taking cuttings from established tender perennials such as fuchsia, geraniums, penstemons and buddleia, or herbs such as sage or lemon verbena is dead easy.
Waste Recycling Household, garden, general building and waste metal removal. Household clearance and removals. Cost effective alternative to skip hire.
This is best done in the morning. Cut a growing stem about 10-12cms or 4-5ins long just below a pair of leaves. Remove the first two sets of leaves above that so you are left with a stem and growing shoot at the end. Put into a pot of free draining compost, water well, cover with a plastic bag and place in warm greenhouse or windowsill. In three or four weeks you should have a rooted cutting which can then be potted on. Taking cutting from penstemons is extra simple as this is the best time to cut the parent plant in your garden right back down to the lowest growing buds to encourage bushy growth. Using your prunings for cuttings. May is traditionally the time for planting out tender bedding and garden stalwarts such as dahlias. Just keep an eye out for frosts and if there’s a late forecast, protect with fleece. Succulents can also be propagated at this time of year. Pull off a leaf, and leave it somewhere safe for a few days so it develops a callus then very gently put end on into gritty compost and wait for the tiny growths to appear.

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Football writer at Trinity Mirror
As the curtain falls on the end of another football season our Barry gives us his thoughts on what can be generously described as a disappointing season at the City Ground. There are some reasons to be optimistic but with the controversy surrounding the new owner is there light at the end of this very long tunnel?
It’s been a long old season at Nottingham Forest, and one that many of us will be glad to see the back of. It began with much fanfare, new owners and a manager that seemed to be perceived by many as the one that would play the kind of football the City Ground regulars had been craving. In Mark Warburton, the Reds began the season well and there was excitement aplenty as some believed a play-off challenge would follow. Rarely does it work out like that, and yet again, as has been the case for so many years now, Forest began to struggle and those aspirations of a positive season fell away before turning into thoughts of a desperate relegation battle. Another change in the management office saw Warburton depart and exReal Madrid defender Aitor Karanka arrive. It hasn’t been plain sailing for the man who took Middlesbrough to the Premier League just two years ago, with plenty of defeats and a clubrecord run of 636 minutes without a goal, before the recent late 2-1 success of Ipswich Town. Karanka changed much in January, bringing in 10 players and letting a clutch leave the club, and you 28
suspect it won’t be too dissimilar in the summer months, as the Spaniard looks towards getting this football club moving on an upward trajectory. Gone should be the days that distinctly average players come to Forest for a bumper pay cheque, lovely surroundings and for want of a better term, a cushy lifestyle. There’s a reason they’ve been out of the top flight for almost 20 years, they haven’t been good enough. This is a club that should demand high standards, players with desire, with courage and ones who want to fight to get Nottingham Forest back into the Premier League, because let’s be honest, barring two play-off campaigns under Billy Davies, this is a club that have spent more time at the bottom end of the second tier than the top. Their new ownership has to back Karanka with the necessary funds to go out and get the quality needed, and then it’s up to him to harness and build the character and style that will see Forest moving in the right direction. Strap in, because it could be another bumpy ride.
