Editor’s Message As I mentioned last month, this is our penultimate magazine of 2018! This year has flown again and as always, we have lots happening. We have a new full-time team member, Danielle, so be gentle with her if you speak with her (for now anyway!). We also have a fantastic new contributor this month, Josephine Walbank, who has written a fabulous article for us about the spooky shenanigans in the Peak District! I’m hoping she’ll do some more topical articles for us going forward, she has been a pleasure to work with.
Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine
Next up is our bumper Xmas edition which comes out in mid-November (remember not to expect a magazine at the beginning of November!), so get those Xmas events in asap so we can make sure we get it included in the magazine. And if you want a special Xmas advert just give us a call and our fantastic team will be only too happy to help but you have to let us know nice and early. On that note, check out one of our new advertisers, Roseanna Croft Jewellery, who can do fantastic things with all your jewellery items including recycling any items you can’t wear any longer or even having something brand new designed to your specification for a special occasion. If this floats your boat, check out her offer this month, which I am firmly expecting as a Christmas gift! *hint hint Mr Voice* In other Christmas news, we are on our 5th year of teaming up with the NEC regarding their Christmas Gift Fair. Each year we have tickets to give away for this fantastic event which is sure to get you in the spirit of things and if you would like to win some tickets, see page 34 for more details. Thanks as always for all the contributions to our rural diary and the What’s on sections, please keep them coming and let us know if you need any changes, give us a shout.

Health & Wellbeing
with Helen
This month I have decided to discuss one of my favourite topics, YOGA - something that has been absolutely essential to my physical and mental wellbeing over the years. Yoga is different to other forms of exercise in that it allows the mind and body to work in union, achieved by focussing on the breath and being mindful of how your body is feeling. We work into and hold yoga ‘poses.’ These traditional positions not only help to stretch and strengthen the body they also regulate our bodily functions and improve health. How gentle or challenging you make your practice depends on what your body and mind need on any given day. Often the tricky thing is letting go of our ‘ego’ and not comparing ourselves to others – try to switch off from everyone else in the class and forget those ‘perfect’ poses you see on social media – this is about making time for YOU and what YOU need! Comparing ourselves to others is of no use, as it says in Desiderata comparing ourselves to others will only lead to vanity and bitterness. Instead be grateful for wherever your body is, then ENJOY the journey towards wherever you want to be. It’s important to find a teacher and style of yoga that works for you. Find a teacher you like, who helps you to listen to your body and do what you feel comfortable with. Different teachers teach different styles of yoga so if you try one class with one teacher and it doesn’t feel right for you try a different style of yoga or a different teacher. Working with the breath is an important part of yoga and it can feel a bit tricky to always keep your focus on the breath. Start off by going gently into a pose, explore how it feels, and then on an exhale try to relax into the pose. When you are practicing yoga, spend time focussing on your face muscles, are they relaxed? Does your face feel like it is having to work hard? If so let go, have a gentle smile on the face and ENJOY your practice, this after all is the most important thing! The shavasana (relaxation) at the end of each yoga class is lots of people’s favourite part of a class. For other people however this might be the most challenging part of the class, lying still and relaxing. Whether you enjoy it or not relaxation is such an important part of the practice as it allows the body to recover and reset as you reap the benefits from the physical practice. So even if you are doing self-practice at home, always

Hi, I’m Peter, your friendly local photographer, helping you capture your events and memories, whether you are looking for a beautiful portrait, to capture the romance of your wedding or to promote your business endeavours. However, I wanted to use this opportunity to share with you some of my experiences and knowledge each month.
IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOS TIP #5 Seeing The Light
Taking photos is great fun, and is an easy way of recording what you are doing, who you are with, and what you can see. You may have an expensive digital camera, a treasured film camera, or just your mobile phone. Regardless, photography is a brilliant way for you to get creative. Photography is all about recording light. The word photograph literally means light-drawing. The quality of light can turn a good photograph into either a great photograph or a disaster.

The quality of daylight is dependent on the time of day, the weather and time of year. There is a specific time each day when the quality of light is really good. This time is called ‘Golden Hour’. Golden Hour is not really an hour long. It is the time just after sunrise and just before sunset when the sun is 10 degrees or less in altitude. When the sun is low the light it gives is very soft. In addition, blue light is diffused, making the reds and yellows stronger by comparison. So overall a lovely soft warm light.

Soft warm light is great for landscape images as well as very flattering for portraits. Harsh midday sun is the exact opposite. HALLOWEEN IN THE PEAK DISTRICT
Book Review
Class, money, elite privilege, politics, power. And of course sex and drugs. And a party for the cream of the establishment in a former priory in the depths of the Oxfordshire countryside. Most of the characters in The Party by Elizabeth Day are really fairly unpleasant, each in their own way. And the author seems to take a fair amount of delight in drawing them all to their own particular nemesis. The story centres around two men who met whilst boys at boarding school. One a scholarship pupil with the wrong background, clothes and accent, the other the scion of an aristocratic family. They have history these two. A history which trickles through the book like sand through a child’s hand till the sandcastle is kicked over at this cataclysmic birthday party. It is a book about decadence, betrayal and jealousy. For all that, or perhaps because of it, it is very entertaining. Day writes with gleeful malice about the scruples and customs of old money and nouveau riche and at the same time provides a tight little story of suspense.

With Halloween fast approaching, if you’re feeling inspired by all the celebrations – and especially brave – then here is a list of some of the Peak District’s, and even the country’s, most haunted places. This is our pick of the top three most haunted places in the area, according to both historical tales and more recent encounters.
Bolsover Castle
Bolsover Castle is the former home of William Cavendish which dates back to the early 17th century. Amongst other occurrences, it is the repeated sighting of a boy attempting to hold visitors’ hands which has led to English Heritage staff voting it as the most ‘spooky’ castle in England. There is even a ‘ghost book’ in the castle to record the abnormal goings on. The apparitions sighted include a woman in the kitchen, doors slamming, footsteps, voices, screaming and unexplained lights, as well as a Grey Lady who can be found walking outside the castle.
Eyam The village of Eyam is best known throughout the country as ‘the plague village’, after the plague was brought to Eyam from London in September 1665. Villagers were consequently forbidden to leave the village in the attempt to keep them under quarantine. Ultimately, out of a population of 356, only 83 people survived the infamous Black Death. After all of this, it is unsurprising that the village hosts daily ghost tours, stopping at the cottages hit by the plague. Many of these historical homes are believed to be haunted, and the Hall itself is haunted by both Sarah Mills and the ghost of an elderly man in a room which is still kept locked. Eyam Churchyard is also said to be haunted by the ghost of Catherine Mompesson, who was the wife of Eyam’s Rector during the plague, who was known for supporting the segregation of the village from
Tunstead Farm
It would be understandable to wonder why this small farm has such a strong connection with ghosts, but this claim to fame is thanks to a fascinating story called ‘The legend of Dickey’s Skull’. The legend reached its peak of notoriety in the 19th century, and it is believed by some that the skull is that of a woman who declared that she wished for her body to permanently remain in the farm house, before she was murdered there. Alternatively, some believe that it is the skull of Ned Dixon who was also murdered at the farm after returning from war. Either way the legend that came to revolve around this skull was that everything would turn to chaos at the farm if it was removed from the premises. Attempts have been made twice to bury the skull at the nearby church in Chapel-en-le frith and both times it had to be brought back to the farm after storms, diseases and the death of livestock. Furthermore, this belief in the skull’s power meant that the local area blamed it for the instability of the Waley Bridge in 1863, which had to be built elsewhere after several unexplained collapses. Consequently, it is believed that the skull has remained there since the late sixteenth century.

Ever fancied throwing a winter barbeque? Don’t let the weather ruin your grill with Finnish inspired Arctic Cabins Gareth Parkinson, Owner of Arctic Cabins, speaks his mind. So when his mother-in-law suggested that he import wooden barbecue huts from her native Finland to the UK he told her there was no way it would work. “British people don’t barbecue in buildings!” he said firmly. But 15 years later, he’s the first to admit his conviction has been completely overturned, with his booming business, Arctic Cabins, as proof. It all began when his wife, Virpi, and her family introduced him to barbecue huts - a feature in almost every Finnish garden. “I’d like to take the credit for it, but I must say I had my doubts! Wood, fire, people drinking … what could possibly go wrong, I thought!” he said, laughing. After seeing the huts for himself - with reindeer skins and a fire to keep out the bitter cold of Lapland’s winters - Gareth soon changed his mind. He said: “I come from Meltham, a village on the very edge of Saddleworth Moor. It’s wet, cold, bleak and windy but that’s nothing compared with the north of Finland!” Despite British weather being much less extreme, it turned out that UK residents were very happy at the thought of having barbecue that’s impossible for the weather to ruin. Gareth began selling the huts at events such as the Ideal Home Show andthe response was immediate. “When we started, we were skint!” he remembers. “We had to beg and borrow to do it. I used to build a cabin at a show on the Thursday and then sleep in it over the weekend to save paying for accommodation.” But within two years, sales had increased so much he decided to establish a showroom and build a website, www.arcticcabins.co.uk When Gareth’s supplier let him down – ironically because he was selling so many they couldn’t keep up – he went into partnership to manufacture them in the UK, before finally setting up entirely on his own. Now Arctic Cabins employs 40 people to make and sell the unique, sloping sided barbecue huts, in addition to his other brandsincluding Cabin Master which sells bespoke cedar and redwood garden rooms, fully lined and insulated to be used as offices, gyms, quiet retreats or whatever purpose suits. The firm also supplies hot tubs and builds glamping pods for other businesses – which has taken off hugely in recent years. Gareth takes satisfaction in having overseen steady growth every single year since those early days as a “one-man band”. These days customers include celebrities and aristocrats – including gardening royalty Alan Titchmarsh - but the huts fit most gardens and comfortably hold a dozen people. “I never thought I’d see us get as busy as we have and be able to employ so many local people,” said Gareth. And if his mother-in-law has any more ideas – he’s sure to listen. Visit the website at www.arcticcabins.co.uk

Gardener’s Calendar ~ October 2018
Move tender plants under cover away from frost – be ready to bring them in at short notice if frost threatens. If you’re moving plants into a greenhouse or conservatory from the garden rather than from a container, dig as much of the root ball up as you can and replant into a pot with fresh compost. This applies to the likes of cordylines, bananas, palms or tree ferns.
Water these evacuees sparingly over winter. Brown or yellow leaves or signs of wilting are likely to be due to lack of humidity rather than lack of watering so mist around them and group them fairly close together. Some tender plants will be too big to move and need to be protected in situ by using wrapping such as fleece, sacking or straw. Lift dahlia, begonia and gladioli tubers and corms and store them in a dry cool place over winter. Remove dead foliage before storing. Prune climbing roses and tie in before winter winds can cause damage. If you find blackspot on the leaves, remove but don’t compost them. Composting spreads the disease. Give the lawn a last mow and most importantly, plant spring bulbs in groups of 10 or more for effect.
TOp Tip!
Tree ferns can be a bit tricky to overwinter and one way to get them through is to tie the fronds upright with straw packing at the centre then wrap in a thick jacket of fleece. Trunks can also be wrapped in fleece and roots mulched. A polystyrene cover over the crown completes the package.
