Editor’s Message Merry Christmas one and all and welcome to our special Christmas edition. Did I mention it’s nearly Christmas!? I make no apologies for being cheerful about Christmas. And if you’re feeling a bit grumpy about it just imagine winter without Christmas! Staying on the theme (it’s Christmas by the way đ&#x;˜‰) we have a load of fabulous Christmas content and adverts, including events in our What’s on section and throughout the magazine so make sure you have a good read through so you don’t miss anything. We have another new contributor this month, so welcome Professor Ian Rotherham and thank you for contributing this fabulous article and I look forward to more in the coming months! Last months contributor Josephine who wrote about Halloween in the Peak District, did a fantastic job but discovered a few holes in some of the stories as directed by the residents! However, we are looking forward to Josephine doing a follow up in coming months, so standby! đ&#x;˜Š

Congratulations to all our NEC Xmas Gift Fair winners. We had a great response again this year so sorry to all those of you who didn’t get tickets. But if you did miss out don’t despair, we have a new competition for you this month. We have a set of family tickets to give away for Cinderella at the Pomegranate Theatre Chesterfield, starring Naomi Wilkinson and Rhydian Roberts. Turn to page 22 to find out more! To help us celebrate the season we have another foster arriving before this magazine lands on your doorstep. It’s a really special thing being able to help a dog, especially this time of the year. I may have mentioned before but we help Spaniel Aid, who do so much good work, fostering and finding homes for deserving doggies but there are lots of other good charities to support, so if you want to help, don’t delay, give a rescue dog a home for Christmas. The next time we will be dropping on your doorstep will be 2019. Now that is a scary thought. We have big plans for next year, with a new website and more mags in the pipeline, along with new exciting content, more great competitions and of course, as always, the very best local information and businesses. Sooooooo keep your eyes peeled!

PETER’S PhoToGRaPhY PaGE Hi, I’m Peter, your friendly local photographer, helping you capture your events and memories, whether you are looking for a beautiful portrait, to capture the romance of your wedding or to promote your business endeavours. However, I wanted to use this opportunity to share with you some of my experiences and knowledge each month.
IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOS TIP #6 Reducing Depth
Taking photos is great fun, and is an easy way of recording what you are doing, who you are with, and what you can see. You may have an expensive digital camera, a treasured film camera, or just your mobile phone. Regardless, photography is a brilliant way for you to get creative. When we look at a photograph our eyes are drawn to what is in focus. So one way to improve your photography is to make only one thing in your photograph in focus, and everything else blurred. In photography the quality of the blur we call bokeh (pronounced bouquet). Getting just one thing in focus can be a little tricky. It is mainly dependent on the lens you are using. Every lens is rated with an ‘f-stop’ number. Your lens might be rated f2.8, or f4, or f5.6. The smaller the number the thinner the slice you can make in focus. So f22 means everything is in focus, f1.0 means just a few mm, or even less! Your camera will allow you to change the f-stop it uses down to the lowest number on your lens (sorry mobiles will not do this). Play around and see what is in focus and what is not. When taking pictures of people always focus on the eye closest to you. I photographed this robin in Sherwood Forest at f3.5. See what you can do! An independent mind…
Do you every find that your moods and emotions are affected and influenced by other people? By what they do, don’t do, say or don’t say or even just ‘vibes’ and energy you feel from them? If so this is a very natural thing and when the people who are affecting you are in positive spirits or behaving exactly as you want them to it can have a really positive affect on you. But sometimes when another’s behaviour or energy is not quite so positive or not as you want it to be it is important that we take care to ensure we are not adversely affected. I often find myself influenced by the behaviour and moods of others but I am slowly learning that I can still be a loving and supportive force in a person’s life without ‘taking on’ their energy. When a close family member was suffering a great deal an important spiritual guide in my life asked me how I was dealing with the situation. When I responded that I was rather worried and was very upset about seeing my family member suffer so much my guide responded: “Helen you can show love and compassion, be helpful and practical but your family member is on their path, it is their journey and their experience to be had.” Immediately I felt less ‘responsible’ – no less concern or compassion but less like it was my responsibility to solve this problem for them. And with this new mind-set I was able to bring much more positivity and practical support into their life than I had previously. It is often useful to remember that we are our own person in charge of our own thoughts and reactions. Just because another person is behaving in a certain way or feeling a certain way it does not mean we have to. We are not that other person! If we are independent of the moods and emotions of others we can then choose to keep giving off positive energy which in turn can help those around you. I am not saying for a single minute that any of this is easy!! I will be the first to admit for me it is often a huge challenge and I don’t always succeed in being emotionally nonattached but the times I do I know I feel better for myself and help others to feel more positivity too… Positivity is infectious… Start spreading it today!
Activity… egg of light meditation
Imagine you are sitting/lying/standing with a gentle loving white light all around you. Imagine within this white light is positive and supportive energy, surrounding you. Any positive energy that others are giving off goes through the egg of white light for you to share. Any negative energy/words that anyone is giving off go towards your egg of light bouncing off and returning back to them as positive energy. Take a few moments to imagine this when you first wake up and then at any point throughout the day when you are picking up any negativity imagine yourself in your lovely egg of light.

Book Review
Family expectations, in this case the need for children to fulfil the dreams of their parents, are always a thorny area. The adult may want the child to be accepted and popular in a way they never were. Or to achieve something they failed to do themselves. And for the child it may be a balancing act between trying to keep their parents happy and their family together whilst negotiating the difficult shores of growing up and becoming their own person. Never easy, sometimes tragic. This is the tale of Lydia Lee and her family as told by Celeste Ng in Everything I Never Told You. Although Ms Ng does add the complication of a boy Lydia pursues at school and who may, or may not, have something to do with her being found floating in the local lake. This is a first novel, but it has struck a chord with many readers. It’s very good on the pressures on children to become what their parents want of them. And on what happens when you’re not the chosen child that everything rests upon. The author gives a good account of what many will recognise as family life and the stories which families tell themselves which may be a million miles from the truth. Worth a read.

A little Christmas cheer across the Peak District…..!
As winter begins to take an icy grip on the region, local people prepare for Christmas celebrations. However, many of our oldest most cherished Christmas customs are neither as traditional nor as ‘Christmassy’ as we might think.
Most of the uses of greenery, such as holly, mistletoe, and in some regions rosemary, bay or other evergreens, are decidedly pagan and have strong fertility overtones. In part, these originate as attempts by early peoples to hold on to the life-force through winter as sunlight and daytime give way to darkness and long
nights.
Winter-green vegetation clearly possessed magical properties to survive the long winter months and they became integral parts of symbolism and rites that related to humanity’s angst about the loss of vitality and fertility of nature. The ‘Yule log’ or ‘Christmas block’ was a specially selected timber log burnt on a hearth in Germanic European countries with its origins in early pagan cultures. In the chill of dark northern European winters the burning of an enormous log through the twelve days of Christmas (and before that, the period of the winter solstice), symbolised the ending of long nights and the beginning of a re-birth of the sun’s power. Similarly, the use of holly and ivy or other winter-greens in Christmas decorations derive from the need to safeguard nature’s life-force throughout the darkness. At the summer solstice the Holly Man and the Oak Man do battle and, as the Holly Man wins the day, the world is plunged into winter darkness. Fortunes are however reversed at the winter solstice i.e. Christmas, and the Oak Man or Oak King defeats his rival so light and fertility return as part of the endless cycle of life. Do think about this next time you decorate your home with holly, ivy, or mistletoe!
14

Christianity then adopted the holly with its red berries as the crown of thorns and Christ’s blood on the cross; but really this is pagan through and through. Indeed, look closely at old carvings and ornamentation in both stone and wood in old Peak District churches and you find green men, and greenery as images from a pagan past bolted onto the Christian faith. But what you ask, about ‘Father Christmas’ a man of many aliases such as St Nicholas and Santa Claus? Well he certainly didn’t celebrate Christmas and knew little about reindeer. In Dutch legends for example, ‘Sinterklaas’ rode a grey horse and wore bishop’s clothes (it takes all sorts at Christmas…). In the far north in you may come across the Finnish legend of ‘Old Man Winter’ driving his reindeer down from the mountains and bringing snow with him. This brings us closer to the man sporting a long white beard and importantly, he has reindeer. Even so, the image of Santa we see everywhere, as the plump, jolly figure, long white beard and the rest is depressingly recent. This derives from drawings by Thomas Nast in Harpers Weekly magazine between 1863 and 1886, the fur-trimmed robe inspired by the furs of the wealthy Astor family.
Anyway, Coca-Cola commissioned young Swedish artist Haddon Sundblom to do an image makeover, what we might call ‘spin’ and it worked a treat. St Nicholas was in a red coat with white trim and a thick leather belt posing in seasonal scenes, and by 1934 found a hat also trimmed in white. His pipe went and he gained a bottle of Coke. Posing with children, reindeer, sacks of toys, or letters, his once modest gifts of cakes, fruit, nuts, dolls and items of clothing, became far more expensive. Here we have the consumer-driven Christmas experience; so enjoy whilst you can! For our Viking ancestors, the Norse god Odin visited his worshippers in the depths of winter bringing gifts for the deserving and punishments for the bad. A few folk I know might look out around Yuletide!
The ‘traditional’ Santa in shops, gardens, corporate displays, on cards, and inflated and illuminated in countless balconies of homes from Bakewell to Buxton, and from Castleton to Hathersage, is sadly a bit of a fraud, perhaps a charlatan. This jovial bundle of fun and merriment clothed in red and white was invented for Coca-Cola. Prior to 1931, Santa Claus sported different garbs from a natty green elf number, to a sombre St Nicholas. In some cases, he was a gaunt man apparently rather frightening in animal skins or straw and called Knecht Rupprecht. Professor Ian D. Rotherham of Sheffield Hallam University is a researcher, writer and broadcaster on wildlife and environmental issues in the Peak District and elsewhere. TRAIDCRAFT
This really will be my last Traidcraft article because, sad to say, the Company will cease trading at the end of this year. In spite of resigning my position as a Traidcraft Rep for Bakewell last year, I have still found myself involved and have been placing orders most weeks. That will definitely end in December, but, in the mean time, I have stocks of food stuffs available and am happy to place orders either for one-off items or to replenish your supplies. The current catalogue will run to the end of the year and is packed full of attractive gifts for Christmas, together with cards and the usual craft and clothing items. The stall at All Saints’ Church, Bakewell is still open and there are others after the Morning Services at Great Longstone and Eyam Churches and, once a month, at the Roman Catholic Church in Hassop. There will be a Sale and Coffee Morning at the Village Hall in Great Longstone from 10am - 12 noon on Tuesday November 6th. The loss of the outlet Traidcraft provides for many small producer groups in over 30 countries will be a sore blow to them. It is hoped that the support which the Traidcraft Exchange has given to such groups will continue in some form, but that remains to be seen.
et us in the mean time all try to ensure that Traidcraft will at least go out with a bang rather than a whimper Peter Bird (01629 813087 – pabird@gmail.com)

Time for a clear-up in the garden. Rake fallen leaves onto your lawn then mow with a rotary mower. This cuts the leaves up fine so they’ll compost more easily and you can rake up the resulting mix. Edging the lawn before winter makes it look more cared for.
Things you can plant now include bare root roses and currant bushes which are in their dormant period. If you’re looking for some winter colour try cyclamen (not the big showy inside ones they won’t survive the cold), pansies, trailing ivy and primulas. The bare stems of cornus come in different colours and are lovely in a winter garden. If you’re planning a waste bonfire – assuming it’s legal in your area, so check with your local authority – make sure there’s no hedgehogs hibernating inside. Also be careful when turning compost heaps which often provide winter warmth for frogs and toads. And if you’ve got plants with hollow stems don’t cut them down as they provide overwintering for insects.
Top Tip!
If the garden is getting bit bare, don’t forget birds can bring loads of life into it. Insect cake hung up will attract tits, berry cake for finches, peanuts cake for starlings. Small birds love grated cheese or bits of bacon rind, blackbirds fruit and raisins.
