Keeping it scary, I know you all like to hear about my adventures, especially the ones where I nearly kill myself! Well this month I did my best to take a few people with me when they naively let me take the wheel of a five person All Terrain Vehicle, after sunset, in the Californian dessert. Needless to say I broke a few speed records and scared the life out of everyone on board. It was a blast! If you want to hear more about my adventures in California check out The Voice Recommends on page 8 to hear about the fantastic trip Mandy Oldknow, Travel Counsellor arranged for me. On a less scary note we have some good news to share this month. Danielle, who has been with us on a part-time basis for a short while, is now a full-time member of the Voice team! Welcome to the mad house Danielle! Also, our NEC Christmas gift fair giveaway is back, so be sure to drop us your entries before the deadline. I love this event and I was gutted that I missed out last year but this year, I shall be attending with bells on (not literally though, I might get mixed up with one the acts!!). See you just before Christmas

The Voice Recommends –
Mandy Oldknow, Travel Counsellor Over 10 years ago we planned a road trip in the USA, travelling from Los Angeles to San Francisco via Las Vegas and taking in some of the amazing National Parks along the way. The fates conspired against us and we had to postpone our trip but thanks to Mandy, our friendly, neighbourhood Super Travel Counsellor we were finally able to make our dream holiday a reality. We knew where we wanted to go but with 9 stops in 13 days and a tight budget, Mandy had her work cut out for her! However, no task is too tough for this fearless travel genie and she magicked together the perfect package. Two weeks before we were set to fly the full itinerary arrived with all the relevant vouchers, and even completed luggage tags! What’s more Mandy had even filled in the initial flight details online meaning all we had to do was a quick online check-in the day before we set off. Needless to say, we had the most fantastic time and everything ran like clockwork. We picked up a lovely Jeep Cherokee (the 4wd came in handy on a few occasions!). And the hotels were fantastic – far better than we could have found ourselves. Because of Mandy’s expertise we stayed in places I never would have even thought of, such as a Lodge right on the southern edge of the Grand Canyon and a converted Ranch right in the middle of Death Valley. In the Cities the hotels were perfectly located to allow us the see everything and of a really high standard. For example, In San Francisco we stayed in a lovely hotel near the buzzing Union Square right by a Cable Car stop and the car hire drop off was just a block away so we easily could walk back. To top it all off at the end of the stay Mandy had arranged a Luxury private transfer to the airport to end the holiday in style, so there was none of the stress of taking a taxi, and it was reasonably priced. In the past I have often tried to plan and book a trip like this myself, using the internet, thinking I can plan the trip just the way I want it and save money at the same time. However, having Mandy organise everything not only took the stress out of it but it was just as cheap and she came up with ideas I simply would not have thought of. Also, with using Mandy you get the piece of mind of it being fully financially and ATOL protected. My recommendation, if you’re planning a trip, whatever it may be from a short city break or a week in the sun, to a cruise or bespoke tour, let Mandy take the hassle out of it so you can relax and focus on having a fantastic time!
Mandy’s Travel Page San Francisco is known as one of the coolest, hippest and friendliest cities in the United States, and it makes for a fantastic holiday destination. Bringing together a huge range of cultures, food, art and people in one seriously beautiful location, if you love healthy living and happy vibes then don’t miss San Francisco! Here’s a rundown of some of the top things to see and do: Pier 39 is the most visited destination in San Francisco would you believe. Is it because it’s where you get to see a sea of sealions or is it the great ice cream, well they are high on everyone’s list I’m sure, but I think it’s actually due to the picture-perfect backdrop for great views on the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, Alcatraz, Angel Island and the famous skyline. Did you know that the Golden Gate Bridge was once called ‘the bridge that couldn’t be built’ and today it’s one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Built in 1937 it is an amazing sight, you can walk and cycle across it during the day if you don’t want to drive it. Alcatraz Island is a place not to be missed. It became a federal penitentiary from 1934-1963 housing famous convicts such as Al Capone and George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly. Visitors have the chance to visit the cells where the prisoners lived. Are you brave enough to visit? Lombard Street you may not have heard of it, but you have certainly seen it in the movies. Often called the crookedest street in the world, this scenic road features right turns, fragrant gardens and great views of the bay and Alcatraz. China Town is the oldest and one of the biggest in the USA. Walk through the Dragons Gate into 24 blocks of hustle and bustle. You can find exotic shops, food markets and temples. Enjoy samples at the tea bar or order some ‘dim sum’. Alamo Square don’t forget your camera. This historic place offers quintessential scenes of the city, including the famous ‘Painted Ladies’ of Postcard Row. This photogenic hilltop has appeared in many TV shows and movies. No trip to San Francisco is complete without riding the historic cable cars. Did you know these aren’t just here to amuse the many tourists, but are used just as much by the locals to get around. San Francisco is a wonderful destination, but don’t forget it’s also a gateway to many other fantastic locations. It is the ideal starting point for a fly-drive holiday, you can pick up a car at end of your stay and head out on the open road. I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you are away in the event of an emergency. Serves: 4 Ready in: 30 Minutes Syns per serving: Free

Crack the eggs into a bowl and beat lightly, then add the chopped parsley, season lightly and beat again. Pour over the bacon mixture and scatter over the tomatoes. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 6-8 minutes, or until the base is set. 3. Preheat your grill to medium-high. Grill the omelette for 3-4 minutes, or until lightly golden and set all the way through. 4. Meanwhile, heat the beans until they are piping hot. Book Review
Class, money, elite privilege, politics, power. And of course sex and drugs. And a party for the cream of the establishment in a former priory in the depths of the Oxfordshire countryside. Most of the characters in The Party by Elizabeth Day are really fairly unpleasant, each in their own way. And the author seems to take a fair amount of delight in drawing them all to their own particular nemesis. The story centres around two men who met whilst boys at boarding school. One a scholarship pupil with the wrong background, clothes and accent, the other the scion of an aristocratic family. They have history these two. A history which trickles through the book like sand through a child’s hand till the sandcastle is kicked over at this cataclysmic birthday party. It is a book about decadence, betrayal and jealousy. For all that, or perhaps because of it, it is very entertaining. Day writes with gleeful malice about the scruples and customs of old money and nouveau riche and at the same time provides a tight little story of suspense.

Ever fancied throwing a winter barbeque? Don’t let the weather ruin your grill with Finnish inspired Arctic Cabins Gareth Parkinson, Owner of Arctic Cabins, speaks his mind. So when his mother-in-law suggested that he import wooden barbecue huts from her native Finland to the UK he told her there was no way it would work. “British people don’t barbecue in buildings!” he said firmly. But 15 years later, he’s the first to admit his conviction has been completely overturned, with his booming business, Arctic Cabins, as proof. It all began when his wife, Virpi, and her family introduced him to barbecue huts - a feature in almost every Finnish garden. “I’d like to take the credit for it, but I must say I had my doubts! Wood, fire, people drinking … what could possibly go wrong, I thought!” he said, laughing. After seeing the huts for himself - with reindeer skins and a fire to keep out the bitter cold of Lapland’s winters - Gareth soon changed his mind. He said: “I come from Meltham, a village on the very edge of Saddleworth Moor. It’s wet, cold, bleak and windy but that’s nothing compared with the north of Finland!” Despite British weather being much less extreme, it turned out that UK residents were very happy at the thought of having barbecue that’s impossible for the weather to ruin. Gareth began selling the huts at events such as the Ideal Home Show andthe response was immediate. “When we started, we were skint!” he remembers. “We had to beg and borrow to do it. I used to build a cabin at a show on the Thursday and then sleep in it over the weekend to save paying for accommodation.” But within two years, sales had increased so much he decided to establish a showroom and build a website, www.arcticcabins.co.uk When Gareth’s supplier let him down – ironically because he was selling so many they couldn’t keep up – he went into partnership to manufacture them in the UK, before finally setting up entirely on his own. Now Arctic Cabins employs 40 people to make and sell the unique, sloping sided barbecue huts, in addition to his other brandsincluding Cabin Master which sells bespoke cedar and redwood garden rooms, fully lined and insulated to be used as offices, gyms, quiet retreats or whatever purpose suits. The firm also supplies hot tubs and builds glamping pods for other businesses – which has taken off hugely in recent years. Gareth takes satisfaction in having overseen steady growth every single year since those early days as a “one-man band”. These days customers include celebrities and aristocrats – including gardening royalty Alan Titchmarsh - but the huts fit most gardens and comfortably hold a dozen people. “I never thought I’d see us get as busy as we have and be able to employ so many local people,” said Gareth. And if his mother-in-law has any more ideas – he’s sure to listen. Visit the website at www.arcticcabins.co.uk

Hey guys! Are you dotty about Dalmatians? Well meet me, Jasper! I loveee human company and would love a new home where someone is around to spend their time with me. I have a happy smiling face and my tail is always wagging when I see you. I do need a bit of training on loose lead walking and calmness around other dogs. I can live with dog savvy children aged 8+ but do need to be the only pet. To meet me, get in touch with the Notts team x

There is no shame in growing old.’ Hi, Billy here and I’m looking for a home with my best friend Sammie. Although we are an older duo we still have so much love to give, all that we ask for in return is a nice, warm comfy spot to nap on. I am housetrained, can live with older children and can be left for 4-5 hours. If you’re looking for a companion then we are the pair for you!

Rambles with Rafa David from JH legal is back to his old tricks, unearthing yet another hidden gem with this fantastic walk. It was a big hit with both the 2-legged and 4-legged Ramblers at Voice mags so why not give it a try and see what you think? The walk starts just outside Strelley Village on the road to All Saints Church. You head out on country lanes across open land, affording some lovely views, before joining a path alongside a gorgeous, disused section of the Nottinghamshire Canal. From here you pass Cossall Marsh Village before returning along a series of lanes to pass back under the M1 and, one of the highlights of the walk, ‘The Stones of Monks Way’ beside All Saints Church.
6-mile circular walk from Strelley Village A mid-length walk which should take you and your dog around 2 - 3 hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. Please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.
Start: Lay-by on Main Street between Strelley Village and All Saints Church, Nottingham. Near NG8 6PE
1. Park on the corner in the lay-by. Walk past a metal barrier along a well laid path, and signposted bridleway for a short distance and then follow the main path around to the left. 2. After a short distance ignore a lane on the right signposted as ‘Private Property’. After some distance ignore a footpath straight ahead and instead follow the main bridleway around to the right to continue ahead with trees on your right and open views to your left. 3. Continue for quite some distance and at a crossroads of paths/lanes keep ahead with a hedge on your left and open views on your right. Continue ahead for some distance to pass through a small metal gate and immediately onto a crossroads of paths/lanes. 4. At the crossroads turn right along a lane signposted for ‘Cossall’. Continue with a hedge on your right and just prior to reaching a motorway, follow the lane around to the right. Follow the lane sharp around to pass through a tunnel, beneath the motorway. 5. Follow the lane around to the left once more and then after a short distance follow the lane around to the right. At this point the lane narrows to a path to continue with trees on your right and open views to your left. Continue for some distance and then pass by a marker post on your righthand side. Now you will continue along a footpath lined by trees on either side. 6. Continue straight ahead for some distance and then follow the footpath sharp left and after a short distance follow the footpath sharp right. Continue ahead for quite some distance. Eventually the path widens to a lane and you will reach a large metal gate directly in front of you. Pass through a gap to the left of the gate and onto a road. Turn right along the road for a very short distance and then turn left through a gap adjacent to a large wooden gate to continue along a signposted footpath with a canal on your left. 7. Continue alongside the canal for some distance and then the path bends sharp left to cross over a wooden footbridge. At a T junction of paths turn right and continue ahead with the canal on your right until reaching another wooden footbridge on your right. Ignore this bridge but continue straight ahead to cross over another footbridge directly in front of you. 8. Continue with the canal on your right until reaching a metal width restrictor adjacent to a large metal gate. Pass through the restrictor, cross over a lane and then pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate. Continue ahead for quite some distance ignoring any paths to the left or right until reaching a metal chicane. 9. Pass through the chicane and follow the footpath going downhill. At the bottom pass by some industrial buildings on your left and continue straight ahead to cross over a road bridge. Pass through a metal width restrictor and along the footpath going uphill. At the top of the hill continue with the canal on your right. 10. Upon reaching a wooden footbridge on your right, cross the bridge and ignore a path on your left to continue straight ahead with a canal on your right. Shortly the canal on your right ends and is replaced by a fence on your right and trees on your left. 11. Continue along the footpath until passing a marker post and a footpath on your left. Immediately after the marker

post follow the footpath sharp to the right to continue with a fence on your right. Eventually you will pass by buildings on both sides of the path and then when you reach a stone wall directly in front of you bear to the left and onto a road. Turn left along the road. The road you are on is Awsworth Lane in Cossall Marsh Village. Immediately after passing No. 50 on your right, and just prior to reaching a bus stop on the right-hand side of the road, turn right to continue along a signposted ‘Bridleway’. Continue along the bridleway for quite some distance and just prior to reaching a road, turn right along a lane and signposted bridleway to ‘Strelley’. Continue along the lane for a short distance and as the path splits turn sharp left to continue along the lane with a hedge on both sides. Continue for until reaching a crossroads of lanes. The lane to your left goes directly to a farm. Take the lane on your right walking away from the farm to continue with open fields on both sides. Continue ahead for some distance and ignore and pass by a marked footpath on your right. After a short distance pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate. Immediately after, ignore a lane to your right and continue going gently downhill. At the bottom of the hill pass by a large double metal gate on your left and a large wooden gate on your right. The lane narrows to a footpath and continues uphill with a fence on your right and trees on your left. After some distance climbing with the fence on your right you will pass through a gap adjacent to a small metal gate. The footpath widens to a lane. Continue along the lane climbing gently uphill until crossing over a motorway bridge. Continue along the lane until reaching a road. At the road turn right and continue straight ahead along the road past Strelley Church and along ‘The Stones of Monk’s Way’. Continue along the road for some distance to return to the start.

Mike’s Musings George’s recent efforts to win over the female electorate seem to have landed him in hot water with the other half of the populous. It seems he may have a bit of work to do if he’s going to pull off the trick of being all things to all people…
Improving Quality of Life (Part 3)
You’ll recall (well......... perhaps some of you will) that last month we left George, UCIP’s People’s Champion, at Alfreton Bus Station where he had re-assured those lovely local ladies that one of his party’s top priorities, once in government, would be to ensure the introduction of a programme whereby Automatic Self Lowering Toilet Seats (ASLTS’s) were installed in all ‘new build’ properties.
George had just received a very affectionate kiss from Lynne, prior to her boarding the bus taking her back to Swanwick - and was feeling very pleased with himself! - when a chap from Jacksdale, who had been listening intently to the exchange of views, called him over. In a soft voice he said that he wanted a quiet word and suggested that they have a chat away from any eavesdropping female ears. As a result George joined him behind the bus shelter where the following one-sided conversation/rant took place. “I’ve been listening to these ladies and their moaning about men and their toilet habits. Well, all I can say is that it’s a sad state of affairs if that’s the main issue in their lives. OK, you’re a politician representing a party that claims to ‘speak for the people’ and I can understand why you’ve got to lend a sympathetic ear and seek to resolve their problem. After all, I appreciate that it may help deliver you votes from approximately half the electorate. Well, let’s have a bit of gender balance!
36
I reckon most of those ladies haranguing you would also argue that it’s unfair that many women now have to wait until they reach the same age as men, before they receive their State Pension. Well, I know it’s an emotional subject, but I for one have no problem with the pushing back of retirement age, over the next ten years, to 67. After all, most of us are living longer and are considerably fitter as we approach old age than previous generations, and the plan to equalise State Pension entitlement was announced back in 1995. That was 23 years ago, so why the big fuss now?

So, and here’s the point George, will your party take steps to penalise those women who constantly go on and on (and on etc.) about the unfairness of something that has clearly been introduced, amongst other reasons, as a way of ending blatant discrimination against men? After all, decisive action on this topic might just secure you future support from 50% of the electorate. The other half of course!!” George, was saved from having to give what, of necessity, would have been a diplomatic response, by the arrival of the 11.30 bus to Nottingham (via Jacksdale) and stood silently and in deep thought as a bloke with a big chip on his shoulder climbed aboard. He may be UCIP’s People’s Champion but, if he wasn’t already aware George now realised that no politician can ever please all of the people all of the time.

Move tender plants under cover away from frost – be ready to bring them in at short notice if frost threatens. If you’re moving plants into a greenhouse or conservatory from the garden rather than from a container, dig as much of the root ball up as you can and replant into a pot with fresh compost. This applies to the likes of cordylines, bananas, palms or tree ferns.
Get rid of moss, stubborn dirt, graffiti, slippy paths and much, much more. All deep cleaned, then re-sanded, re-coloured and sealed where required.

Water these evacuees sparingly over winter. Brown or yellow leaves or signs of wilting are likely to be due to lack of humidity rather than lack of watering so mist around them and group them fairly close together. Some tender plants will be too big to move and need to be protected in situ by using wrapping such as fleece, sacking or straw. Lift dahlia, begonia and gladioli tubers and corms and store them in a dry cool place over winter. Remove dead foliage before storing. Prune climbing roses and tie in before winter winds can cause damage. If you find blackspot on the leaves, remove but don’t compost them. Composting spreads the disease. Give the lawn a last mow and most importantly, plant spring bulbs in groups of 10 or more for effect.

Tree ferns can be a bit tricky to overwinter and one way to get them through is to tie the fronds upright with straw packing at the centre then wrap in a thick jacket of fleece. Trunks can also be wrapped in fleece and roots mulched. A polystyrene cover over the crown completes the package.

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Football writer at Trinity Mirror
Last month Barry was predicting big things for our local clubs. Well, one month in and Notts County have already parted company with Kevin Nolan after a dreadful start and whilst Derby are showing real promise there is cause for concern down at the City Ground. Over to Barry for more…
It’s been an interesting opening month or so of the Championship campaign for our two major football clubs on this patch. Derby County and Nottingham Forest have endured very different starts to the season, after very different pre-seasons amid somewhat varying expectations. At the time of writing the Rams, under new rookie boss Frank Lampard, have assumed their usual place in the play-off zone, while Aitor Karanka’s Reds have once again found themselves languishing in the bottom half of the second tier – something that wasn’t supposed to happen. It is funny, though, how thin the line is between success and failure. Fans at Forest used to laugh and scoff at Mark Warburton when he talked about the fine lines that often played a big impact last season, but he’s absolutely correct. The Reds were beaten 2-1 at Brentford before the international break; they didn’t play well and were five minutes away from salvaging yet another draw – what would have been their fifth. Had they of done so, most observers would probably have reflected on the opening month of the season and viewed it as a solid if not unspectacular start, remaining unbeaten in the process. As it was, the Reds did suffer their first defeat and that only brought into focus the disappointing nature of their performances for the most part, certainly aside of the impressive
40
75 minutes or so against West Brom. Karanka is a man under pressure already and he knows it. More than £25m has been spent this summer in a bid to make Forest competitive, with 16 signings made, performances like we’ve seen so far will only heighten that pressure. It may still be early in the campaign, and far too early to be talking about replacements, but the Spaniard knows performances simply have to improve and so to do results if he’s to retain his employment for any length of time. On the flip side, for all the talk about Lampard arriving at Derby late in the piece following his punditry work at the World Cup in Russia, the Rams have adapted well to life under the 40-year-old. That heavy defeat at home to old adversaries Leeds and then at Millwall raised concerns, but they were always going to be tricky assignments, especially for a side with a fair amount of players still wet behind the ears facing seasoned Championship operators. Lampard has got his side into the top end of the division and while we’re still at the embryonic stage of this season, you’d expect him to keep that squad in and around the business end of the table. Karanka knows that’s exactly where his paymasters believe/want to be and the longer his pragmatic approach fails to secure wins, the more pressurised his situation will become.
