THIS MAY LOOK LIKE A BOUTIQ U E HOTEL …

Editor’s Message As I write this it’s another scorching day but as the mags arrive on your doorstep we will be fully into the kid’s summer holidays, so now doubt the long sunny days will have come to an end! But if you’re looking for something to entertain your little ones make sure you check out Things To Do – there are a few good ideas in there this month.

Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

As you will see on our front covers its National Afternoon Tea Week on the 14th to the 20th August so why not take the excuse to book in for a little treat. I’m sure one of our lovely advertisers can help out! Such as Jacksdale Garden Centre or Hilcote Country Club.

… BUT IT’ S AC TUALLY LUXU RY RE TIREM ENT LIVING AT AU DLE Y ST ELPHIN ’ S PARK .

So, we’ve been very busy this month! A short break up to Scotland saw us climbing and this time making it to the top (stupid snow!) of Ben Nevis, as well as quad biking and horse riding (we like to take it easy!). Unfortunately, we were unable to go white water rafting as they were running low on water – in Scotland – so you know it’s been a long hot summer! We also did another Escape Room this month, albeit with less success, although no less fun. We’ll bring you a review of that next month in time for the opening of ILocked’s brand new room – Battleship. Finally and by no means least, we are delighted to announce that Voice Magazines have become corporate members of the Rotary Club of Alfreton!

Exceptional Retirement Living Experience an independent lifestyle in a beautiful and secure environment, where your property and gardens are maintained for you. At the heart of the village you’ll find the Audley Club with amenities to rival any boutique hotel, including a pool, gym, beauty treatment rooms, restaurant, bar and library, all on your doorstep to use as you please. Call us to request an information pack or book your private tour.

Rotary is one of the largest humanitarian organisations in the world, doing charitable work internationally and, importantly, in our local community. But Rotary is changing. They are moving with the times, moving on from old fashioned dress codes, traditions and procedures to embrace new ideas whilst staying true to the motto ‘Service above self!’, all of which makes us very proud to become members! The club draws its members from all walks of life from Alfreton and the surrounding areas of Amber Valley and yes, both men and women are welcome; in fact our very own Mandy Oldknow (Travel Counsellor) is the new President. We meet once a week on Mondays at 12:45pm at Higham Farm Hotel so if you’re interested in coming contact John North the Club Secretary on 07484 101274 or find out more at www. alfretonrotaryclub.org.uk

1. Place the onion, pepper and garlic in a small saucepan with the stock and simmer for a few minutes. 2. Add the vine tomatoes to the pan, then the canned tomatoes, tomato purée and oregano. 3. Cut the chicken fillet in half horizontally, being careful not to cut it the whole way through. Fold open to make a butterfly shape. 4. Lightly spray a non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray, then fry the chicken to give colour on both sides. 5. Place the chicken in the oven and cook for 15-20 minutes. 6. When the chicken is cooked, place the tomato mixture on top. Add the cheese and sprinkle with basil. Place the cherry tomato on the top, then put back in the oven for 5 minutes. Tanzania, one of the largest countries in East Africa, is a jewel that is too often overlooked by visitors to Africa. Home to the continent’s highest peak (Mount Kilimanjaro), its lowest depression (the bed of Lake Tanganyika), its most famous national park (the Serengeti), and part of its largest lake by area (Lake Victoria), Tanzania’s natural wonders are perfectly complemented by its excellent range of tourist attractions and activities. Best time to visit Tanzania’s climate is characterised by distinct wet and dry seasons. Tanzania has two rainy seasons; the ‘Mango rains’ which last from November to mid-January, and the chief monsoon season that runs from mid-March to May. The best time to visit Tanzania is between June and August, when daytime temperatures are bearable, and nights are cool rather than sultry. For visitors to the Serengeti, the famous migration starts in late February - but be warned that this is an extremely hot time of the year, with the mercury rising as high as 90°F (32°C). Recommended length of stay: Combine a three to five night safari with a seven night beach break Currency: Tanzanian shillings (TZS)

Top Three experiences

Experience the famous Serengeti wildebeest migration Being in the great Serengeti amongst thousands of migrating wildebeest with predators never far behind is a safari which is hard to beat. Sitting on the balcony of your Bush Rover suite elevated several metres high before the great Mara river in view of a wildebeest crossing point but away from the crowds takes the migration experience to a whole new level. Explore Selous Game Reserve and Saadani National Park Tanzania has some remote parks which are full of amazing wildlife for guests who prefer to be off the usual tourist trail. Enjoy a stay at Sable Mountain Lodge in Selous Game Reserve and Simply Saadani Camp or Babs’ Camp in Saadani National Park which is the only coastal wildlife park in East Africa providing a one stop shop of Indian Ocean, beach and wildlife park in one destination. Discover the stunning beaches, world-class diving and famous spices of Zanzibar Exotic Zanzibar has always evoked wonderful images of bazaars, culture with an Indian Arabic influence, spices, stunning white sand beaches, azure blue Indian Ocean waters and world-class diving. Few places on earth are as romantic, and a Zanzibar beach getaway is the perfect end to your safari. Book Review

The Party by Elizabeth Day is the perfect holiday book. It’s smart, it’s funny, it’s a thriller. It’s got rich people, dirty secrets, snobbery, jealousy, revenge and at its heart a Mr Ripley-like character from the wrong side of the tracks, obsessed with living a different life. What’s not to love? It probably helps if you’ve got an airport and plane journey, or a swimming pool with no interruptions so you can read it in one go, with the odd sip from a glass of something cool. The plot centres round the glam 40 birthday of Ben Fitzmaurice, wealthy, successful, popular. Naturally Ben has invited his oldest friend Martin from their days together at public school. Martin was long ago dubbed Little Shadow, shortened to LS in true old-school style due to his devotion to his bigger, wealthier, gloriously aristocratic friend. th

But for some reason LS and his wife Lucy are staying at the local Premier Inn, having not been invited to overnight at the Fitzmaurice’s new stately pad. And thus starts the sinister tale of betrayal and double jeopardy.

The Party may not be great literature, but it is well written, expertly plotted and with some deliciously awful characters. And as the reader you get to observe their embarrassments, delusions and downfalls. Brilliant fun and quite a decent thriller.

Rambles with Rafa We’re back in the Peak District this month as we make the most of the summer weather to explore further afield. Thanks go out again to David from JH Legal for this beauty! After a couple of more taxing walks in recent months this walk is somewhat gentler, whilst still taking in some fantastic countryside, Rafa (and Flake) certainly approved! If you’re thinking of making a day of it Calver is a lovely village and the Eyre Arms is a great dog friendly place to stop for a drink or a bite to eat.

6-mile circular walk from Calver to Froggatt along the River Derwent A mid-length walk which should take you and your dog around 2½-3 hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. Please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.

Start: Calver Mill Gallery, Bridge Cottage, Calver. Derbys. S32 3XA 1.

Facing the gallery take the single-track tarmac road to the left signposted for ‘Calver Mill’. After some distance ignore the gate to the right into Calver Mill and continue straight ahead passing a sign on a stone post for ‘Stocking Farm. Just prior to reaching some farm buildings follow the road around to the right. After, turn immediately left and pass through a small wooden gate adjacent to a large wooden gate and continue to cross an open field. Upon reaching a river on your right continue ahead keeping the river close on your right. After a short distance pass through a small wooden gate adjacent to a large metal gate. Now continue along a footpath with the river on your right. Pass 2 bungalows on your left, then after a short distance you will reach a road. Cross the road to pass through a gap and then continue along a footpath with the river on your right. After a short distance cross over a footbridge and then continue with the river on your right for some distance, passing through three more wooden gates. Eventually pass through a wooden gate onto a road. Turn right to cross over the river and after a very short distance turn left at a T junction along a road called ‘Hollow Gate’. Continue ahead until the road bends sharp right and uphill. At this point continue straight ahead along a road and a footpath signposted for ‘Grindleford Bridge’. The road turns into a lane with a dry-stone wall on both sides, then into a footpath. Shortly after this pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate, into a field, and continue with a dry-stone wall on your right. When the dry-stone wall on your right comes to an end bear slightly to the right following an arrow on a marker post, to continue to cross an open field. Pass through a gap and then continue with a dry-stone wall on your left for some distance before passing through another gap to cross an open field. Pass through another gap to follow a signpost for ‘Froggatt Wood’. Continue along a footpath through woodland and crossing several streams. Pass through a gap and then continue with a stone wall on your left. Then pass through a small wooden gate adjacent to a large wooden gate and cross an open field going downhill. At the bottom of the hill bear slightly left to cross over a stream and continue ahead to pass a telegraph pole on your right. Cross an open field and at the far side pass through a wooden gate and onto a road. Turn right along the road for a very short distance and then turn right along a lane and signposted footpath. After some distance follow the lane sharp right and after a very short distance pass a marker post on your right. Ignore the path to the left and continue straight ahead to cross over a stream. After a very short distance pass through a small wooden gate just off to your right and enter a field. Cross the field towards a marker post. At the marker post turn left signposted as ‘The Wellington Boot Route’. Pass through a large gap in a wall pass by two marker posts on your right. You will begin to enter some trees. Pass two more marker posts on your left and continue along a wooden walkway to pass through a wooden gate and uphill through the trees until you reach a dry-stone wall in front of you. Bear slightly right and continue with the wall on your left, following an arrow on a marker post on your right pass through a large gap in the wall on your left. Continue straight ahead, now, with the wall on your right. After some distance cross over a stream on your left and then

continue ahead to cross over a walkway/bridge. Immediately after the bridge pass through a large gap in a wall directly in front of you. Still amongst trees follow the arrow on a marker post on your left to continue ahead. At a marker post with an arrow pointing to the left follow the arrow on a path of laid flag stones. Cross over some stepping stones over a fast running stream, then continue to cross over two more streams. Pass a marker post on your right, then cross over another stream. Continue gently uphill for some distance, eventually the path continues with a wall on your right. Pass through a small wooden gate adjacent to a large wooden gate onto a road. Turn right, then shortly after passing ‘Moorlands Farm Bed & Breakfast’ on your right, turn left along a road called ‘Malthouse Lane’. Continue along ‘Malthouse Lane’ for some distance and then at the far end of the road follow it sharp around to the right and downhill. At a T-junction turn left. Continue ahead, ignoring a road on your right and passing a red post box on your left. Pass through a small wooden gate on your right along a footpath with a river on your right. Cross over a footbridge and then continue with the river on your right. Continue for some distance and then at a split in the path take the right split, reaching some steps up to a road. Cross the road, pass through a gap and then continue along a footpath with the river on your right. After some distance climb up some steps, cross over a footbridge and then continue with the river on your right. After some distance cross a wooden footbridge, climb some steps and continue with the river on your right. Further on pass through a small wooden gate along the path. Pass through the wooden gate onto a road. Turn right and continue for some distance, reaching a junction. Turn right along a road and cross over the river to return to ‘Calver Mill Gallery’

We are a loveable duo with lots of love to give, so we would like somebody home majority of the time for us to adore! My favourite thing to do is spending time with my sister, running around on fields and going on adventures. We are looking for a home where we can relax and have loads of attention, so we would like to be the only pets in the home. An adult only home is what we are looking for as we are not used to the little people. If you would like to meet me and my partner in crime, please contact the Nottinghamshire centre. We are looking forward to meeting you! Love Poppy and Amber x

Mike’s Musings Mike’s budding political party continues to thrive and grow. With problem solving skills like the one’s evidenced below I think mainstream politics is in for a rude awakening at the next General Election.

Improving Quality of Life

UCIP - it’s a hard ‘C’ to ironically make the party sound like the pressure group/political party that helped decide this country’s immediate fate and then......... promptly disappeared to leave us to sort out the mess - Executive Committee recently asked George to ‘get out onto the streets’ and canvass opinion to discover what issues are currently troubling the electorate. After a day pestering shoppers and passers-by on South Normanton’s High Street, here are (and this is only the start) his findings. One married couple, who gave their names as Harold and Mildred, were happy to get a few things off their chest. “I hate it when, whilst sitting in the theatre minutes before a performance is about to begin, someone turns up and the whole row has to get up, shift bags, contort their body and generally be inconvenienced to accommodate an inconsiderate latecomer said Mildred.

Harold added that he had the same issue with those attending a rugby union, cricket or other such like sporting event – apart from football who think that it is socially acceptable to sink half a dozen pints. That would be OK, he maintained, were it not for the fact that during the game they then forcefully brush their way past other spectators who are trying to watch the action, as weak bladders give rise to an overwhelming desire to visit the toilet. To compound matters, they then return with another half dozen pints and repeat the process. Harold and Mildred felt that if something could be done to abolish these tiresome practices, their lives would be so much richer and they looked imploringly at George hoping that he could come up with an answer. Indeed he has!

28

~

Once in power UCIP would introduce a Bill requiring all places of entertainment to operate an airport style boarding pass system. Fifteen minutes before the performance is scheduled to start, pre-boarding would begin and at regular intervals thereafter, those with specific row/ticket numbers would be asked to ‘come forward’ and take their seats. Any punter failing to follow these reasonable instructions would be denied entry until the interval.

Thinking that this might not be a popular measure he came up with a suggestion that, with a bit of self-policing, sporting crowds could probably manage themselves. As a result when a spectator, not sitting by the aisle, gets up to leave the sporting arena whilst the action is taking place, UCIP government advice would be for every other person on that row to move to his/her right or left as appropriate, and take up the vacant seat. When the ‘offender’ returns, suitably relieved and/or restocked with drink, they would have to sit at the end. Sorry, no room for a quiz this month as well but, as I’m sure you’ll appreciate, these are very important issues!!

Working in partnership with

Ian Wilson

We’ve been in touch with Mildred and she is a) happy with the proposal and b) is now a committed UCIP supporter. As for inconvenience caused by excessive drinking at sporting events, George’s first thought was to insist that clubs enquire at the time of sale of tickets if weak bladders might be an issue and to then allocate seats at the end of a row/aisle accordingly.

August is a brilliant time for hot colours. Dahlias, zinnias, heleniums, finally come into their own and if you keep on top of the deadheading they’ll keep going well into the first frosts. As sunflowers fade, you can take off the main head and cut back to a pair of leaves forcing the plant to produce smaller flowers. If your border perennials or containers are starting to look a bit weary, try watering once a week with liquid tomato food to give them a bit of late season oomph and encourage late blooming. The big boys (or girls!) of August tend to be quite tall plants and it’s useful to know that phlox is a great plant for hiding those bare legs. It has a great scent too. Japanese anemones are also a good filler. They are very reliable, provide cooler colours and will enjoy full sun or part shade.

Top Tip!

It’s difficult to keep on top of watering hanging baskets - It seems like they dry out as fast as you water them. One idea is to unhook them and leave soaking in a bucket of water overnight to give the roots a really good drink.

be honest, has become a pretty unpleasant place to live in the last couple of years.

• Plumbing and Heating Systems

For many, a World Cup semi-final coupled with the centre forward taking the Golden Boot prize was probably something far beyond what many would have expected, let alone dreamed of. England surpassed those expectations, securing their best World Cup finish since 1990 but it was far more than that.

Forget the idiots that took celebrations too far at times, instead focus on the happiness on the faces up and down the country after each win and the way in which it gave people escapism from their daily routine.

• Electrical Installations and Testing

Those naysayers will point to the fact Gareth Southgate’s men failed to beat any genuine quality within 90 minutes, losing to Belgium (twice) and Croatia; this is however, a work in progress. Southgate remains a young manager with little experience at the top level for a continued amount of time and his is side a largely made up of youngsters with a lack of international games – they were just found out in the crucial moments which holds no disgrace. Yes, the likes of Raheem Sterling, John Stones, Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson have either won league titles or played in the Champions League with some degree of regularity, but at international level, their experience of coming up against real quality is somewhat lacking – and so it proved when faced with Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitić in the closing stages against the Croats. They’ll be enriched for this experience, and they won a penalty shoot-out. This tournament was about more than just losing to Modric’s men in Moscow in the semi-final, though. It was about bringing joy to a nation that’s become increasingly divided which let’s

32

Only football has the power to do that. This game is about making memories and they’ll last this generation a lifetime. The Three Lions reenergised a country divided, if only for a short time.

Seeing the St George’s flag draped over windows, council houses and painted on those happy, joyful faces, it was about singing Football’s Coming Home with renewed gusto. This wasn’t the classic English arrogance (despite what some will have you believe), this was a public falling back in love with their national team and finally enjoying watching them at work.

Above all else, it was a joy watching the England players, so often saddled with doubt, pressure and the weight of the world on their shoulders, revel in their experience. I wrote previously about hoping they enjoy the World Cup, and a month on, it’s safe to say they have done, that for me, is worth a great deal.

It’ll be tinged with disappointment that they couldn’t take those first half chances at the Luzhniki Stadium, but that’s football. It wasn’t meant to be, however, make no mistake, this was the summer that football really did come home.
