Editor’s Message Ok, so World Cup fever edition didn’t do us any favours!! I think the less said on that matter the better!!! On the plus side, at the time of going to press the sun is raging hot and we have the hopes of a nation riding on Andy Murray….. lets see what our dad and his lad have to say about that??!! We have lots of summer fayres and events happening at the moment, so make sure you have a good read through all the pages and pick which ones your going to go to. Keep supporting your local communities!! This month we have had a lovely walk submitted by our good friends at JH Legal and it is a cracker even if I do say so myself. Rafa has featured in this magazine more times that I have, check out the Jerry Green Dog Rescue new sponsors! All Paws have taken a wonderful picture of our Raf and it is in pride of place in our living room. Amazing job, can’t recommend them highly enough. You may have also noticed our new pictures, or should I say caricatures, courtesy of Darren Amphlett. We also have these on our business cards now and we think he did a brilliant job. Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you Carla keeps telling me (after ages of nagging me to use any of the companies in this magazine have a picture!) that my caricature is not life like as it’s too pretty...we have a very happy team ;-) See you next month,

A new feature where we really get to know our businesses, what got them started, what they enjoy most about their business and what makes them different!!
Shouting about... This month we meet Richard Heyman of... So Richard... how long have you been in the building trade?
I started on a YTS with a national building company from the age of 16. I went on to work for several small companies and I also worked for a major construction company for 10 years before setting up on my own.
Do you have any qualifications?
I have my City and Guilds Certificate and I’ve recently gained my PAT Testing qualification. I’m always really keen to learn new things.
What do you like best about your job?
I love the freedom of working for myself and being my own boss. I also like the fact that I can turn my hand to most things, which makes my job quite varied.
Do you have a favourite type of work?
It has to be re-pointing... even more so when the sun is shining! I’m also really good at it, even if I do say so myself!
T: 01773 301 922 M: 07870 642 169 www.rhbuildingservices.co.uk
So, what are you up to at the moment?
I’ve recently been doing lots of re-plastering jobs which is unusual for this time of year. Over winter when we had all the storms I was doing lots of guttering work.
What do you like doing when you’re not working? I love photography! You’d quite often catch me around Lumbsdale near Tansley with a camera and a backpack.
And finally... Why should people choose you over other builders? I have many years of experience and have carried out every type of building job over the years. I’ve been a Trusted Trader for nearly 5 years now and have built up a large amount of customer feedback, all of which is positive. I’m happy to travel further a field and always provide customers with a free and friendly estimate... but it might cost you a cup of coffee!

WORLD CUP & WIMBLEDON This month our dad and his lad gives us an overview of the remaining World Cup fixtures and their predictions
The publishing deadline date hampered a full knockout guide but here are dates and times for the knockout stages! What we do know is that England will not be featuring. Two poor results, albeit against good opposition, will mean an early flight home for Roy and his boys. The biggest shock was the removal of Spain, although like we mentioned in last months article, the Champions do often fall at the first hurdle in the following World Cup.
Spaniard only dropping 6 games in the process. The Scot also lost in the second round of the Aegon Open to Radek Stepanek, who at 42nd in the World Rankings should not be troubling him.. Nadal will be full of conidence having won the French Open in great form. We don’t see him winning it though as he does not seem to be able to replicate his clay court form on grass. Nadal has been removed from the competition in the early rounds for the last 2 championships, with neither of his opponents 1 28th June 5pm Winner A Runner Up B being ranked in the top 100. There is no doubt that we all feel sexier, healthier and thinner when our skin looks bronzed and Summer golden. However, many of us are equally concerned about the damage that the sun will do to our skin, and it’s ageing properties, not to mention the increased chance of developing the deadliest form of skin cancer – melanoma.

If like me you were a young teenager in the 60’s you might have sat in the sun covered in various oils, or even with no protection at all until your skin went a lovely shade of pink! Little did we know the harm we were doing. We now all really know better and want our skin to age as slowly as possible, so why not consider faking it? By this I am not advocating sun beds for artiicial rays which can still put your skin at great risk, but why not apply an artiicial tan that will last from about 4 to 10 days? With a little help and salon time or advice to do your own tan at home you too could be bronzed and glowing like the mag celebrities. So what can you do? Either come into Body and Sole using your Voice special discount vouchers and experience for yourself a St. Tropez exfoliation and full body application of a lovely rich tan. If time is precious and you only want a hint of a tint on your legs you could come into the salon and just have a little he-shi smoothed onto your legs so that tights could be a thing of the past for the Summer. Or, if you are going to fake it yourself, here are a few golden rules: ♦Remove any body hair 48hours before tanning ♦Exfoliate fully, especially around your heels and ankles, knees and elbows and under your arms ♦Cream any areas that tend to be dry – heels, ankles, knees and elbows
♦Put disposable gloves on your hands before handling the tan to avoid orange palms!!
♦Mousse self tans and most liquid self tans should be applied with an application mitt – try he-shi from Body and Sole either dark mousse or express liquid tan with their lovely application mitt. ♦Work from the bottom of your body upwards so that you are not bending and creating tan creases. ♦Leave your face until last and only us a little tan that is left on your glove for a nice natural glow. Re-buff towards the body to blend. ♦Don’t put any tan on the soles of your feet, and wipe a clean tissue or damp facial wipe against the hair growth of your eyebrows. Wipe over the toe nails to inish. ♦Now remove your gloves and blend a little tan over the backs of your hands from your wrists. Wash palms of the hands. ♦Leave your tan overnight to develop, and gently shower off in the morning. Gently patting dry with a soft towel. If you only want a little Summer glow, bronzing is the best way to go, both on your face and a little down the centre of your cleavage where a shadow would naturally form. Please visit Heather for beautiful bronzers. Have a happy glowing Summer !

Derbyshire Police Update - Protecting your shed Many people store their gardening equipment, tools, bikes and BBQs in their shed and, unfortunately, this means that these outbuildings are often seen as an easy target by thieves. But there are many ways to keep your garden, shed and home safe, and in this edition we wanted to share some of our tips to help you protect your property. This month we start with sheds: The irst aspect of protecting your shed is to it a good quality lock. There is a range of sturdy padlocks, padbolts, hasps and staples available on the market, but make sure you get one that is appropriate to the strength of your shed door and frame. Remember that any opening windows on your shed will also require a good quality lock. In addition to a lock, you may wish to consider itting an alarm on your shed. There are three types of alarm system that could be used: ♦ An infra-red detector in the shed that picks up on movement and body heat. ♦ A door contact system. ♦ An alarm within the padlock itself, which sounds if the lock is forced open or tampered with. These systems can be purchased from most DIY stores and locksmiths. Another aspect of protecting your garden shed is that the items inside it - as well as being expensive to replace - can also be used to break into your home. For example, a garden spade could be used to force open a window or door. Take these items into consideration when planning the security of your shed and think about chaining and padlocking tools that could assist a thief.
You can ind out more advice on these issues by visiting the website, www.derbyshire.police.uk, or contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team by calling 101.

Larry – 18 months approx – Lurcher – Castrated/vacced/ micro-chipped Larry is so lovable and certainly typical to his breed. He adores company and would like a home where someone will give him time to settle and become part of the family. He likes children and loves other dogs, he may sometime mess in the home due to anxiety but would not take long to housetrain. Larry is a great traveller and walks lovely on the lead.

Gardener’s Calendar - July 2014 It’s tempting to say that July is the time to sit in the garden and enjoy your hard work with a glass of something cool in your hand – but there are still things to do if you’re that way inclined…….Cut back plants such as geraniums after their irst lush of lowering to encourage a second strong growth.
Plant autumn bulbs such as nerine and autumn lowering crocus. It isn’t only dahlias and helianthum which can provide later colour.
Top tip.
This is often the warmest month so it’s the best time to let conservatory plants have a bit of fresh air and put them outside.
24
Keep inspecting your lilies for red lily beetle and get rid by whatever means – they can completely strip a plant within days, including your beautiful lowers. Also watch out for plants dying out suddenly in a pot – it could be vine weevil, particularly if you’ve bought them from a garden centre. These ‘orrible little pests eat through the roots so you have to bin any affected plants, along with the compost and replant any not affected, in fresh compost.

50% OF HOMES ALREADY SOLD AS RIPPON OPENS THE DOOR TO THE BRAMBLES Home buyers can now find out more about the latest development from Rippon Homes, as the house builder has just opened the doors to a new sales office in South Normanton. Those interested in the four-bedroom homes available at The Brambles, on Red Lane, should visit the sales office at their earliest convenience, as interest in the available homes is already high with 50% already reserved off-plan. The Brambles, which features 12 homes, has already seen six of the homes reserved by eager buyers. Lynne Wheeler, Sales Adviser at Rippon Homes, comments: “Home buyers have shown a lot of interest in The Brambles and have already reserved 50% of our new homes. “We now have just six four-bedroom detached homes available at The Brambles, which benefit from our usual high specification.
So, whether it’s a traditional layout or modern open-plan living you are looking for, we have the four-bedroom home for you Lynne adds: “Our Church View development sold out just a few months after its launch, so our advice to home buyers who are interested in our new homes at The Brambles is to visit our sales office sooner rather than later.” Rippon is able to offer part-exchange, Help to Buy and their own Sales Assist package, ask Lynne for more details.
“We recognise that every family is different, so we have a number of spacious and well-designed homes to suit every need, including a number of new house styles. “So, whether it’s a traditional layout or modern open-plan living you are looking for, we have the four-bedroom home for you.” All homes feature Rippon’s high standard finishes, including a modern fully fitted kitchen and stylish bathroom, and master bedroom with en-suite. After a few months of complaints I’m going to try and not upset anyone this time, just to make Emily’s life a little easier. I was working from home the other day and had the windows open, I could hear the sports day at Swanwick Hall, I heard over the tannoy that my daughter had won the 200m and pride just rushed through me, as an aside she also won the long jump and relay. Well done to Harry Wyld, who won his long jump event but failed by 10mm to break the school record, you’ll learn through life Harry that the last 10mm is very important in certain situations, he’s in for a stressful summer as his Dad, Mark will no doubt send him on a crash course in Athletics. This all got me thinking that it’s nearly 40 years since my last school sports day, where has the time gone? I seem to troll along thinking nothing’s changed and the realisation hits that I’m getting old. I’m at the stage where my hair is like grass, it doesn’t grow where I want it to, but does grow in the places where I don’t need it. I’m doing some building work at home, which I haven’t done for nearly 10 years and I can feel the pain, it never used to hurt like this but I’m aching like George Michael after a night with Elton
John. I don’t think I’m quite ready to be installed as the favourite in the sweep as the first customer at the new crem, but I know that more than half of my life has gone. Bugger it, I’m going to enjoy the last bit. So on to a moan, who let Michael ‘skull cracker’ Wheatley go home for the weekend? There’s a clue in his nick name for Christ’s sake, he absconded and attempted to rob a few building societies, and tried, you guessed it, to crack a few skulls. Someone must have signed a document to let him out of prison. ‘Here you go skull cracker, the Governor says you can have a few days off, now behave yourself and make sure you come back’. Who are these idiots that take these sort of decisions? Are they educated? Have they just attended a ‘who can we let out next to rape and pillage the population’ seminar? It’ll be Sutcliffe next, let out for the day to attend the Tour de France in Yorkshire. He’ll nick a racing bike and be off to his old haunts. There’s a few of us going to watch the tour in God’s county, so if I see the Ripper then I’ll let you know. And, finally If I have offended anyone then tough t*****s and get a grip.
If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact either Emily on info@voicemagazines.co.uk or 01773 604 178 / 07891 639 638 or Carla on carla@voicemagazines.co.uk or 07896 294 512 The views expressed in the column above are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Amber Valley Media
