Editor’s Message It’s hard to believe but 4 years ago this month, our very first edition hit your doorstep. We’ve gone through a lot of changes in those years but we hope that you still enjoy reading this little community magazine and we cannot thank you enough for all your support. We have more plans for the future, so roll on the next 4 years! It’s hard to believe we are in September and the kids are going back to school, time really does fly! We’re just preparing for the Christmas edition now and that thought is incredibly unpleasant, not because I don’t love Christmas... but purely because this year seems to have gone in the blink of an eye. We have had a busy month and you will see this is the case with our articles! We also have lots of new advertisers who are starting to get their Christmas campaigns in order, very sensible! A big welcome to all of those and we also have some events this month too… not least Alfreton’s Party in the Park. Come along and support them on the 7th September, it’s going to be a fabulous event. In the coming months we also have a couple of brilliant give-aways… exclusive tickets… I can hardly wait to unveil them so watch this space next month. See you all for the October Edition… Happy Reading,

On the new football season Anyone who knows our lad and his dad, knows which side of the fence they sit but they mask it well with an insightful look at the age old grudge match…..

Steve McClaren was subsequently appointed and hit the ground running. The Rams had a super season and eventually inished in third spot. They were unlucky not to be promoted having outplayed QPR in the Play-Off Final.

Both are on season long loans.

Forest have shipped out lots of the ‘dead wood’ and made some astute signings including Michael Mancienne from Hamburg and club record signing Britt Assombalonga from Peterborough. A new feature where we really get to know our businesses, what got them started, what they enjoy most about their business and what makes them different!!

Shouting about... This month we meet Clean Away... T: 07708 097 517   E: d.smith98@sky.com

How long has Clean Away been going?

I have been trading for 7 years now and it is just me. When people phone me up, they always say, “Are you going to send one of your girls over?” and very often I get a negative response when I say that it will be me! But once people get to know me, they are really happy with me and pleased with the work that I do for them.

I suppose the fact that you have a beard and tattoo can put people off too!! It really does to be honest. One of my very first customers said to me a while back that had her daughter not been with her, she wouldn’t have employed me but she is really glad that she did and she has been with me ever since.

How did you get into starting your own business as a cleaner?

In the count down to the C word that involves chaos and presents, we thought this would be the perfect time to meet Darren from Clean Away, as you may well require his services in the coming months! As is always the case with us Voice ladies, we practice what we preach and Darren has been taking care of my house for a couple of years now and I can’t recommend him highly enough, so let’s find out about him….(just for the record, Q4, it wasn’t my request!)

Is there anything that you won’t do?

I have been approached to do naked cleaning…I won’t do that!! Other than that, I provide a bespoke cleaning service. I can do monthly, fortnightly or weekly cleans for business or domestic premises and I always use my own products unless specified by the customer. I can tailor make the service to your needs, to include things like, for example, if you need someone to pop out and get you some shopping one week.

What do you enjoy about your job? I’ve always enjoyed cleaning but before I started Clean Away I was working as a shop fitter. It is a physically demanding job and I just wasn’t enjoying it anymore. So, one night I was at a friends party and I started tidying and loading the dishwasher, she said “you should do this for a living”!! My friend got me my first two customers and I started Clean Away part time, having left my shop fitter job. I did leaflet drops, got myself another job part time and built it up from there.

Everything, the variety and what’s more, the messier the house the better. I just love to go into a house, do my job and being able to see where I’ve been when I leave.

...Next month, we meet Jill at JH Legal

Heather Many of us have had our Summer holidays and are now back at work. We seem to be time poor as we plough along with our busy lives, and think that we can’t it those lovely little beauty treats in between rushing from work to pick up the children, do the shopping, mow the lawn, cook .............. I could go on and on and on! At Body and Sole we appreciate that sometimes you want a quick treatment in a lunch time, early morning or at the end of the day, so we are offering some luxurious but super speedy treatments. Can you imagine yourself returning home before an evening out with your make-up done, or your toes and nails iled and painted? You could have a quick neck and shoulder massage in your lunch break, or we would even come out and visit you at work providing there were at least 3 people. Why not give us a try and go home feeling happy and relaxed and ready to roll. Quick Treatment No:

2 Years and continually bringing success stories to peoples lives

After a very long time of having chronic back ache and pain and after trying other treatments to try and get some relief, I decided to try KORE therapy. I am so pleased with the results, I now have a lot less back pain and have much more movement in my neck, shoulders and lower back than I have had for a long time. Not having to take pain killers every day is a bonus because I hate taking pills. Mara has done a fantastic job and I can’t thank her enough. Rob from Somercotes.

Reader Recommends Angie sent an e-mail to tell us what happened when she went to see Mara at Breath of Life after seeing it advertised in the Voice. I have suffered with pain following a car crash over 20 years ago and have spent a lot of money at different Osteopaths and Sports Massage Clinics and seen my Dr many mes and had to take tablets that have had bad side effects and not helped at all. I first contacted Mara for a Swedish Massage but she found many underlying problems that a Massage cannot fix so told me about the K.O.R.E treatment that she offers, I took all the informaon home and decided to give it a try. Mara made me feel very relaxed and I basically listened to what she told me then she performed muscle tesng, acupuncture and cupping on me finishing off with an amazing massage then more muscle tesng. I have never felt so relaxed as I did aerwards and my cheeks have never been so rosy without the help of blusher!! I saw Mara again the following week and she explained the emoonal damage your body goes through aer any trauma and has helped me so much already. I have 4 more sessions to go to before Mara told me I will feel more like my old self. I just wanted to spread the word because so many people are struggling physically and emoonally in their everyday life.

Derbyshire Police - Safer Neighbourhood Information In this edition of Voice Magazines, we would like to remind residents to be aware of the risks of leaving your doors or windows unlocked or open during the warmer weather. It is as oficers’ notice an increase in insecure or sneak-in burglaries at this time of year, where a thief will take an opportunity to sneak into someone’s home through an open or unlocked door or window. Insecure burglary can happen when you are out or even when you are at home, so it is vital that you keep doors and windows locked. You should even make sure that you lock and close doors and windows to your home when you are doing a bit of gardening, nipping to the neighbours for a chat, calling at the local shop or if you have friends or relatives due to be popping round. Please get into the habit of locking your doors and windows at all times – it only takes a minute of your time and could help prevent you from becoming a victim of burglary. Some of your possessions will be very valuable or irreplaceable so please don’t make it easy for them to be stolen. We ask that you don’t feel alarmed but just be aware of the risks, and if you follow this advice you can really help reduce the potential of suffering from this type of crime. If you would like advice about home security, you can always contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team by calling 101, or by emailing them from the website: www.derbyshire.police.uk

Buddy is very healthy and fit for his age, he is housetrained and can be left for 2-3 hours. Buddy walks very well on a harness and does have to be kept on his lead as he is slightly deaf and will not return if let off. Freddie 10 months old Staffie Lively and excitable, Freddie is looking for a Staffie experienced home where he can have full attention and time for training. Freddie is learning manners when meeting and interacting with other dogs, he is too lively for young children but would be fine with teenagers. Freddie walks very well on a harness and lead and enjoys a filled kong when left on his own. He is fine to travel in the car and would suit an avid runner who would like a companion.

While the country is still riding high on the recent wave of sports coverage, the Tour de France, Wimbledon and World Cup and everyone was inspired by the Commonwealth Games medal winners. Many people, of all ages, are now taking up, or rejoining, sports clubs and exercise activities. One way to do your recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity is to do 30 minutes on 5 days a week. Jogging or running, swimming fast, riding a bike fast or attending a Group Cycling class (which are available at Ripley & Alfreton Leisure Centres) badminton or other racquet sports, football, group and aquatic exercise classes or even martial arts. This level of activity can be achieved through attending a gym or one of the many group exercise classes, or swimming activities that are on offer at the three Places for People Leisure Centre’s at Alfreton, Ripley or Heanor.

26

Us three Voice ladies are all members of the leisure centre and between us we attend a large variety of gym classes, this may tell you a lot about us as individuals but the important fact is the availability of variety! From Combat & Boot Camp to Body Pump, Spinning and Yoga, between the three of us we have tried most classes as well as just simply going to the gym….in fact, see the photos of me and Janine in action!! What we can say is that we have all been members for a while and from the welcome at reception to the second your class has finished, you are always made to feel incredibly welcome and not self-conscious in the slightest. Carla & Janine know a lot of the instructors personally over the years and can’t speak highly enough of them and the same goes for me. If you resolve to get healthy, you need to commit to Alfreton Leisure Centre. You get the benefit of going to the other local gyms in the area (Ripley & Heanor) and all those stereotypes you have going on in your head…. they don’t exist here. So make a difference to your life and come and join us …see you there x

Gardener’s Calendar - September 2014 Not into autumn yet of course but if you get some species crocus bulbs in quickly you should get a show out of them when the cooler weather does arrive. But don’t put them at the back of borders under the bushes where they do well in Spring. They still need light so towards the front of the border is best for these late lowerers.

Cooler and damper evenings and nights encourage botrytis or grey mould in damp greenhouses, so water your plants early in the day to give the greenhouse a chance to dry out before it gets dark.

It’s worth putting nets over your pond before leaf drop starts. Dying debris can encourage growth of algae and weeds, which apart from not looking good can reduce oxygen levels for ish. Top tip.

Time to pot up some parsley and mint roots to put on the kitchen windowsill so that at least you’ve some home grown fresh herbs during the winter.

The house builder has a range of house styles available to suit every budget and every taste at The Brambles on Red Lane in South Normanton. As Rippon Homes is offering part-exchange, sales assist or the Government-backed Help to Buy scheme on all four-bedroom homes at the Red Lane development, it’s even easier to find a route into a new family home. Plus, for a limited time home buyers can also put their own stamp on their new detached home by choosing the fixtures and fittings to their kitchen and bathroom. Ian Dyke, Managing Director at Rippon Homes, comments: “We’ve got a high specification

four-bedroom home to suit every lifestyle at The Brambles. “Our range of house styles ensures there’s something to suit every family, whether it’s a traditional layout or an open-plan design that you’re looking for. “Our extra little touches help to make a house a home from day one and all of our four-bedroom homes include a fully fitted kitchen, stylish bathroom, a master bedroom with en-suite, wardrobes to the master bedrooms and carpets throughout, as well as either a single or double garage.” The government backed Help to buy scheme is available on the homes which enables the buyers to secure their new home with only a 5% deposit, and a 75% mortgage backed up with a 20% equity loan provided by the government. Alternatively, those who have a property to sell can enjoy a smooth, hassle-free move to

The Brambles with Rippon’s part-exchange scheme, as the house builder will act as a buyer for the existing property. Otherwise, buyers can save time and money by opting for Rippon’s sales assist scheme; the house builder will arrange for the existing property to be advertised by an estate agent and will pay the fees on behalf of the seller. This means home buyers will have no estate agents fees to pay and can enjoy a quick sale, with no chain and little risk of the deal falling through. Homes are priced from £206,950 - £232,950. For more information on available homes, Help to Buy or part-exchange visit The Brambles on Red Lane, open from 10.30am to 5.30pm, Thursday to Monday. Alternatively, call 07776 305524 or 0800 1697644 or go to www.ripponhomes.co.uk.

Mortgages  •  Re-mortgages  •  Buy to let mortgages  •  Life cover Buildings & contents insurance  •  Over 25 years experience Please contact us for professional, friendly advice. Gold Independent Financial Services Ltd based in Ripley offers advice on mortgages and insurance so whether you’re a first time buyer, remortgaging, moving or wanting to purchase a property to let we can help. Wayne Bates the Managing Director has worked in financial services for 26 years; following a successful career with a leading insurance firm he decided to set up his own advisory firm; Gold started trading in 1998 and since then it has helped thousands of clients realise their dreams of owning their own home. Wayne truly believes the customer comes first and his focus is on providing clients with a first class service, he wants you to be pleased that you used Gold for your mortgage needs and when you need advice in the future you automatically think of Gold. The business has grown on the back of strong customer service and the majority of new clients are referrals from existing clients who we continue to look after. Our regulator, The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) believes that in the past, some people were allowed to take out a mortgage they could not afford. This led to some of them falling behind with their payments or losing their home. The FCA has looked at how the process of getting a mortgage can be improved to prevent these problems. As a result they introduced new rules on 26 April 2014, to make sure that when you take out a mortgage: •you can afford it •it suits your needs and circumstances Our job is to research the mortgage market to find the deal that we believe is most appropriate for you taking your personal circumstances, needs and objectives into account. The mortgage lenders must satisfy themselves that you can afford your repayments now and in the future but we will consider this before any application is submitted. It is therefore important that when we meet, you are able to provide us with full details of your income and a breakdown of your monthly expenditure.

Another of the new rules introduced by the FCA is to stop mortgages being taken out without full advice (except under certain circumstances). Many lenders only offering their own products have been affected by this change but as a mortgage broker we have always provided this type of advice and pride ourselves on giving you the best service possible. The new rules cover mortgages where you use your own home as security for the loan, but do not cover buy-to-let mortgages or second mortgages. Wayne is fully trained and qualified to give advice on all types of mortgages from across the entire mortgage market so a call today could stop you from paying too much for your mortgage either now or in the future. We have all seen the effects that the dreadful weather, that has hit the UK earlier in the year, has had on homes, so once you have bought your property it is important that you take out adequate insurance, your lender will insist on buildings cover but you should not forget to insure the contents of your home. We can source products from a panel of insurers to provide you with competitive cover, even if you already have a policy there is no harm in looking at your options. Wayne is often surprised by how many of his clients have failed to take out life cover or critical illness protection; everyone insures their car but too many people forget to insure what is most important to their families. We don’t want to scare anybody but research shows that one in three people will be affected by some sort of cancer in their lifetime. There are over 200 types of cancer, that can attack different parts of the body and with advances in medical science survival rates are improving. A full review of your needs and circumstances can be carried out at any time; you don’t need to be speaking to us about a mortgage.

For a free no obligation meeting please phone us on 01773 744660. We will always make you feel welcome, the kettle is always on.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. We will only charge you a fee of up to 1% of the amount borrowed (for example if the mortgage is £75,000 the fee is £750), subject to a minimum of £500, payable on completion of your mortgage. We will agree the fee with you before any advice is provided. We do not charge fees for arranging life cover or buildings & contents insurance.

For the last few months my work has been taking me to Leeds and Birmingham, I change trains at Chesterfield and usually buy a coffee at the station. I assume it’s one of those chains that doesn’t pay any tax in the UK, anyway that aside it’s a ‘retail outlet’ that really gets up my nose. Do I have a loyalty card? Do I want to upgrade to a £1 bacon or sausage sandwich? Do I want chocolate sprinkles on my cappuccino? No I just want a cup of bloody coffee! We then get to the health and safety section of the customer experience. I’m one of those sad unhealthy freaks that still has one sugar in his drink, now I know that it’ll likely fur my arteries and give me a mental illness in later life, but so be it, I like a bit of sweetness in my drink. ‘Would you mind not putting the lid on please’, and the reply ‘fraid not, elf n safety’ in that wonderful early morning Chesterfield drawl. So they weld the lid to the cup, add a bit of no nails and then twist the thing just to ensure that the cup is as air tight as a Russian nuclear submarine. You then have to move outside to the ‘sugar station’ and somehow get the lid off to put the sugar in, and that’s where the fun starts. Coffee spilling everywhere and then the Rubik’s cube task of getting the lid back on, but it never fits does it? Burning liquid everywhere, down my trousers in my

newspaper and all over the floor with the rest of the sugar addicts residue. Now don’t get the wrong idea about me being some sort of sophisticated coffee snob, if they sold instant I’d probably have that, but they don’t do they, it has to be some fancy name that none of us had heard of prior to 1990. My choice of cappuccino came from a process of elimination, I tried a latte which was a bit of a let-down, I’ve known babies with a bigger kick. I once heard someone ask for an expresso and thought I’ll have a go at one of them, well I thought they’d made a mistake, a big cup with a miserable drop of mud in the bottom. If that’s how you want to take your caffeine then you may as well inject it. Why is life never easy. It’s just been on the news that Robin Williams hung himself, what is it with comedians and depression? He was a truly funny man who lit up many peoples lives. He was one of those people who you grew up with. Nanu nanu till next time.

On a separate note…..and the iconic pop singer about to be outed was….?
