Editor’s Message Christmas is over for another year and 2017 begins! It’s good to reflect on what has gone and be excited about the possibilities of what the future holds. 2016 has been a fairly historical year for everyone with Brexit and the US Presidential election, whilst this has left us all in a state of uncertainty….Richard Branson also says that there is plenty of opportunity to be found during periods of uncertainty! Lots of developments are planned in for this year, both personally and professionally. I’m hoping to make lots of changes to the magazines and I’m also in the process of making this year’s bucket list including more travelling (so keep your phone on Mandy – TC!) and probably some more adrenaline stuff but I’ll keep you posted on how it goes as I start to tick them off! Finally, many thanks to Abbey who won the ‘Printed by Me’ competition, for writing in to let us know about how she got on and to show us her lovely products. Happy Reading,

Book Review
Two very different books from women writers this month. Olive Kitteridge from Elizabeth Strout, is very finely drawn, precise and concise, as perfect as a tiny piece of polished stone. It tells the tale of a retired schoolteacher, in many ways unlikeable, but with a capacity for seeing directly through to the heart of others. It’s a brilliant bit of storytelling. Nothing much happens in any real sense, so if you’re looking for excitement, this is probably not for you, but it touches you and leaves you with a feeling that you’ve actually learned something about other human beings just by reading it. A real joy, one of those books you can imagine going back to. The other novel is rambunctious, 700 pages long, set across several continents and centuries, and stuffed with characters, families, adventures and eco evangelism. Barkskins, by Annie Proulx, author of Brokeback Mountain and The Shipping News, has been ten years in the writing and is a vast sprawling pile of a book. A lot of it centres around how we treat the environment; man v nature; but the human stories woven into it are what make it so engrossing. It’s an epic ambitious book. But like all her writing it’s uncompromising and passionate – a good way to jolt us into the New Year.

Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Multi-award winning Consultant based in Ripley. I am no stranger to the difficulties most of us face with our weight at some time or another. I had been struggling with yo-yo dieting for years–I was unhappy and I lacked the energy and the confidence to do the things I wanted to do. In 2007, I discovered Cambridge Weight Plan (or Cambridge Diet as it was then), losing 3½ stones in 3 months. I couldn’t believe how easy it had been to lose the weight and more importantly, keep it off so I decided to become a Cambridge Consultant to help other people transform their lives and reach their dream weight. I see clients on a one-to-one basis, providing support and motivation throughout their weight loss and then on in to maintenance, as this can be the hardest time for some people. Whether someone has seven pounds to lose or seven stones, I can help. In the nine years I’ve been a Consultant, I have won several awards including ‘Highly Commended’ and ‘Above & Beyond’ for the work I’ve done with my clients.
New Year, New You!
Lose weight and feel great Cambridge Weight Plan have been successfully helping people lose weight and keep it off for more than 30 years. Unlike any other diet, it offers unique one-to-one Consultant support and an extensive range of fantastic products, with programmes that cater for different circumstances and weight loss targets. The Plan is made up of a flexible sixstep programme (ranging from 600kcal to 1500+kcal per day), allowing you to choose the perfect Step that fits you and your lifestyle.
What have you got to lose? Take that next step and change your life forever!
Being a Cambridge Consultant doesn’t really feel like a job at all. I’ve helped hundreds of local people transform their lives–seeing them become happier and more confident is very rewarding and gives me a lot of satisfaction. * The weight lost and/or timeframes are particular to this slimmer. Everyone’s weight loss journeyis unique to them.

Slimming World Recipe Chicken & mushroom pies So Christmas is over and although you may have over indulged ever so slightly, it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the homely food that we all crave at this time of year! These pies are super-filling and just 1 Syn on Extra Easy! Serves 4 Cook time: Ready in about 1hr Ready in: Over 60 Minutes *Freezer Friendly
Method:
Ingredients:
2. Preheat a large, non-stick pan over a medium heat and cook the chicken breasts for 8-10 minutes on each side, or until cooked through. Allow to cool slightly and cut into large, bite-size pieces and set aside.
For the filling:
1. Preheat your oven to 220°C/200°C Fan/Gas 7. Boil the potatoes in a large saucepan of boiling water for 15-20 minutes, or until tender. Drain, return to the pan and add the vegetable stock. Mash until smooth, season and set aside.
3. Spray a pan with low calorie cooking spray. Add the leeks, bacon, spring onions, garlic and mushrooms. Stir-fry over a high heat for 6-8 minutes. Stir in the stock, gravy granules and mustard powder. Season, bring to the boil, then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes, or until slightly thickened. 4. Remove from the heat and stir in the chicken chunks and tarragon. Spoon this mixture into four individual pie dishes, or one medium-size one. Top each pie with the mashed potato to form a ‘lid’ and brush with beaten egg. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until bubbling and golden.

2 years old – Staffy cross English Bull Terrier Lulu is very lively and enjoys playing and cuddles. She may be suitable with older children due to her exuberance but she does require a pet free home as she is not happy being with other animals. Lulu is clean and could be left for short periods. Lulu is full of character and spirit. She enjoys going out walking and playing with her toys.
Candy
9 years old – Akita cross Candy is such a friendly girl and always wants to say hello to everyone she can. She enjoys getting lots of cuddles and attention. She enjoys going out on walks and walks very gently on her lead. She only needs short walks as she does have sore hips which doesn’t hold her back as she enjoys having a scoot around. She is always happy to be meeting new doggy friends and could possibly live with a calmer dog of similar size as she is happy to potter around with them, playful dogs might be too much for her. She also finds smaller dogs a little overwhelming. She ideally would love an adult only home as she enjoys her own space and may become overwhelmed by children around.

Rambles with Rafa This month we complete our Homesford tearooms double with another short but sweet walk beginning at the tearooms car park. As I suggested last month it is possible to join these two walks up if you like a bit more of a leg stretch or even split them up with trip to the tearooms in between, making use of the voucher on page 15. Thanks again to David Hallam who continues to provide the best local walks to our lucky readers. Rafa is firing on all cylinders again so get ready for more great walks in 2017. Speaking of which if you have any suggestions where Rafa should ramble to next please send them in as David is always looking for good ideas.
3 mile circular walk from Homesford Tea Rooms, on the A6 near Whatstandwell A short but picturesque walk for you and your dog! There are some uphill sections on this walk so should it take around 1½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, which can be muddy and uneven, especially during winter so make sure you wear appropriate footwear. There are also a couple of sections of road, so please take plenty of care.

Stand, facing the road, with your back to the tea rooms and turn left to continue along the main road. After a short distance turn left, pass by a metal gate to continue downhill along a tarmac lane and signposted footpath. At the bottom of the hill follow the lane around to the left and pass underneath a railway bridge. Immediately after the bridge keep to the right and follow a footpath to climb some steps and cross over a river bridge. Immediately after the river bridge turn left to follow the footpath and continue until reaching a T junction of paths. Turn right along the first footpath signposted for ‘Holloway’. After a short distance you will pass another signpost for Ambergate on your left. Continue straight ahead, now going downhill until this path merges with another.
4.
Now continue for some distance with a canal on your left and just prior to passing under a bridge turn right and up some steps.
5.
At the top of the steps pass through a wooden gate and then turn sharp left to pass over the canal. Continue straight ahead along a tarmac lane.
6.
After a short distance cross straight over a road and continue along a lane into some trees. Eventually the lane becomes a footpath. Continue straight ahead climbing uphill for a long distance, when the path splits, continue right and then pass through a wooden gate.
7.
Now continue with a wooden fence and views to your right. After some distance pass through a 2nd wooden gate and then pass through a gap onto a road.
8.
Turn right along the road and ignore the first signposted footpath on your right. Continue straight ahead passing a bus stop and then when the road bends around to the right, turn right through a gap in a stone wall and onto a signposted footpath.
9.
Continue downhill through a field staying close to the trees and bushes on your left. At the bottom of the field continue straight ahead to pass into some trees.
10. Continue along the path downhill and then pass through a gap in a fence. Continue straight ahead and pass through 2 metal gates. Upon reaching a road, cross straight over the road and continue downhill along the footpath. 11. Eventually the path begins to level out and curl around to the left. Look out for a footpath with a footbridge going off to the right. Take this path, cross over the footbridge and then at a T junction of paths turn right along a path signposted for’ Cromford’. 12. Continue along this path with a canal on your right for a long distance and then pass through a long tunnel. Immediately after the tunnel turn left along a footpath signposted for ‘Homesford’. 13. Continue along this path crossing over a river bridge, down some steps, and then underneath a railway bridge. Follow the tarmac lane back to the main road and then turn right along the road back to the tea rooms.

As a person who likes to hunt down great deals by booking their own holidays via the internet, I was curious to try Mandy the Travel Counsellor as a comparison...
Getting a good deal is key but Mandy has so much more to offer! I gave her a really rubbish brief but she persevered and managed to extract from me that I wanted a trendy/ quirky hotel but not expensive hotel that is fairly central but not in the centre (about 2 tube stops to be exact) #difficultcustomer
Mandy came back with THE MOST PERFECT HOTEL that we couldn’t find on the usual internet search engines. She booked the flights, transfers (which were impeccable) and even contacted me to tell me about the ‘Vienna Pass’… it was one of the best purchases for the holiday! I didn’t have to do any online check-ins – done, no printing of docs as they all came in a specific travel wallet – done, luggage tags both ways – done… she did everything except pack my bags, which I might work on for next time! Mandy shouldn’t be a hidden gem and I for one am enjoying telling everyone how I have enjoyed the most hassle free, luxurious holiday booking experience of all time!

Man dy ’s Travel Page Hi my name is Mandy and I would like to welcome you to my first monthly travel page of the Swanwick edition.
I have been writing in the Alfreton Voice for the past year and have loved sharing my ideas and hearing from the readers. I would like to take this time to tell you a little about myself. I live in Alfreton with my 15 year old son who loves his travel as much as I do. I have worked in travel for the past 28 years, starting as a YTS for an independent agency moving to Bolsover Cruise and then the Co-op before finding my dream job and becoming a Travel Counsellor in September 2000. My aim each month will be to bring you the latest travel news, hints and tips for travelling. I will also answer any travel questions you have, all you need to do is email mandy.oldknow@travelcounsellors.com using the title VOICE TRAVEL Holidays are such a personal thing and something you save hard for, so it has to be perfect, that’s where I come in. As a Travel Counsellor I look after every detail of your holiday from beginning to end. Just look what my clients have to say… Mandy is always extremely efficient. The after sales service is second to none. Who else would check you in online, print boarding cards and even write your luggage labels for you. We even arrived home to a lovely ‘welcome home’ card. We will definitely recommend Mandy to all our friends. Fantastic service with a smile. Mandy has booked several holidays for us and we will continue to ask her to do so. We have recommended Mandy to others. Excellent service and attention to detail. I’m a difficult customer changing my mind time and time again, adding things to my requests and questions popping in to my head at all times of the day. For Mandy nothing was too much trouble, I think I received 10 different quotes all in all and emails were answered in no time (even on Sunday evening) Great advice was given about where to stay, things to do while we were away and little tips on things that would make our holiday that much easier. You get the personal touch with your Travel Counsellor. Thanks Mandy.
I will be offering £50.00 off a holiday to the first 10 readers who contact me quoting reference TC274 (T&C’s apply minimum spend £750.00) I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you are away in the event of emergency. Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Nottingham Forest writer at the Nottingham Post We all want success but must it come at such a high price? That’s the issue that Barry tackles this month with his take on football ticket prices. Should fans pay for success before it arrives or do clubs have to earn the right to charge the higher prices? And should fans even have to pay such high prices at all with the amount of money with the amount of money from televising games. I’ll leave you in Barry’s capable hands…
FOOTBALL has a problem.
OK, I’ll rephrase that: football has a number of problems and many are well documented. But reading recent comments made by the chief executive at Sheffield Wednesday sparked a degree of anger, and not for the first time this season.
On Boxing Day, the Reds visited Huddersfield Town and, despite recent praise for the Terriers and their “low prices” for home fans, Reds were still expected to pay £30. £30 at Huddersfield – yes, you’ve read that correctly. That’s as much as it costs to watch a game in the Premier League. How can that be right?
There is one thing in particular that is incredibly frustrating, and that’s the continued rise of ticket prices, especially in the Championship. Joe Palmer, the CEO at Hillsborough, scoffed without a care in the world, that if fans want their club to challenge for promotion to the Premier League, they should expect to pay for it with increased ticket prices.
Well, Joe, this, as you rightly point out, is the Championship. But for the game against Forest in September, you were charging some fans £43 and there is no justification for that. And before the Wednesday fans start whining again, I know that was a match-day price for more desirable seats – but that doesn’t make it right. There are few subjects that anger supporters quite like the cost of the product and Forest are suffering like any other. Just over 21,000 were there last month to see Philippe Montanier’s side beat Newcastle, and that attendance was boosted by the two previous wins at Ipswich and Barnsley. Had Forest not won those two games, then the crowd may not have exceeded 18,000, which for a clash against a big name in the Championship, is disappointing.
Forest’s £27 adult price wasn’t too bad for a game on television. It’s not great, but it’s a darn sight less than £32.50 at Ipswich, £30 at Barnsley (when it was £15 for home fans) and £29 at Derby in the big East Midlands clash. The game at Portman Road was watched by a measly crowd of just over 15,000. Well, that was the official attendance – I’d be amazed if there were that many actually inside the stadium.
34
Part of Forest’s problem is that the club has been away from the Premier League for nearly 20 years, and that’s bound to have an effect. The continuing ownership problems will also have an impact, but I don’t believe thousands are staying away because of Fawaz Al Hasawi. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’d be amazed if there was an extra 3,000 or 4,000 following the takeover.
The more fans I speak to, the more say there are disenchanted with the game, with the greed, with the cost, along with a lack of progress – and that’s why they are not going. Quite frankly, the prices being charged by clubs are daylight robbery. And if Mr Palmer thinks fans will just keep paying it out of blind loyalty; he might have a little shock coming his way. There is a tipping point, and it won’t be too far away. Attendances across the Championship are dropping, as they are elsewhere but, until the Football League stops burying its head in the sand, nothing will change.
The Twenty’s Plenty campaign is great, but primarily focuses on the Premier League and, as more and more foreign owners come into the game chasing the riches of the top flight, it will be as Mr Palmer says, be the fans that are expected to foot the bill without much thought from officials. But it must be the Football League who have to develop a degree of courage and stop the great and greedy rip-off.

January is mostly about care and nurturing in the garden, though there are some jobs available if it’s not too nitheringly cold. You can plant bare root roses now. Just not in the same spot where other roses have grown. Newly planted shrubs of all kinds can sometimes have their roots, which won’t be firmly established, lifted by frost. It’s worth checking up on them and re-firming by treading in gently. Tender shrubs can be packed with straw around the crown and wrapped in fleece. The growth on last year’s ornamental grasses will probably be looking a bit straggly by now. Cut them down to about an inch from the ground before they start growing again. Remove old hellebore leaves so the flowers are more visible. And even in winter the deadheading mantra still holds firm, so if you’ve put winter pansies in to make the garden look a bit more cheerful, snip off faded flowers so they don’t set seed and think their job is done leaving you with fewer flowers.
Top Tip!
January is a tough time for birds. Windfall or beyond-their-best apples are a treat and many birds will eat from the ground – you don’t have to put up bird feeders. Even bits of bacon fat strung into a tree or shrub will help.

Gary’s Grumbles In the future, alongside the names of Edgar Cayce, Nostradamus and Mother Shipton they will print the name Gary Peacock, that’s my prediction at least, and you heard it here first! Based on the last year I’m not so sure I want to know the future even if I could, as one sage once said: ‘The future isn’t what it used to be’. Anyway, without further ado here’s Gary’s annual prediction… Happy January everyone and I hope you had a jovial Christmas. A couple of years ago I made some new year Nostradamus type predictions for the coming year and I got eleven out of twelve correct so I thought I’d give it another go.
July – The Lions beat New Zealand 2-1 but are taken hostage by the Samoan Republican Army who are looking to gain independence from the invading refugee European zombies made homeless by the nukes on France.
January – Deep in the Trump bunker, just ten minutes after the inauguration the new President presses the button and obliterates Mexico, China and France, luckily for us the westerly winds take the fallout over Italy, Greece and the Middle East.
August – The Government discovers that Alfreton is not on the coast and is, therefore, not much use as the port for a shipping canal, oil drops to $23 a barrel and they decide to go with HS2 again. Sooty is released with all charges dropped. Sweep and Soo are given life.
February – The Daily Mail reports that after Prince Harry’s intended takes a DNA test, its discovered that she is in fact the secret love child of Princess Diana and Harry’s father. The marriage goes ahead with full Royal pomp and ceremony. March – Russia invades Scotland and sets up new customs posts on Hadrian’s Wall. The locals make a killing swapping Levis and Beatles CD’s for Kalashnikovs. April – Sooty, Sweep and Soo are arrested in a new child abuse scandal. Trump passes legislation, incarcerating anyone with a beard or tattoo. Anyone with both is sent to the Russian – German no fly zone to repaint the borders. May – Oil reaches $10,000 a barrel and so HS2 is scrapped, the new plan is to build a ship canal from London to Alfreton. Leicester win the champion’s league, Chelsea the League and Sheffield Wednesday beat Derby County in the championship play off final. June – Teresa May is caught up in a bizarre love triangle with Trump and Putin and is given two weeks to decide which one of their babies she should have.
September – The nuclear winter begins and Mandy from the Steampacket has to put on an extra jumper. A concrete wall is proposed along the east coast stretching from Sunderland to Brighton to keep out the zombies and the channel tunnel is filled in on the French side. October – Bonfire night is cancelled by the new Trump-Putin world alliance, Christmas is also in doubt unless the name is changed to mid-winter gift giving day. November – Nicola Sturgeon states that the Russian invasion of her country was not democratic and that they should go back to where they came. The BBC suggest a second European referendum, which is ruined by ITV and Sky who explain that there isn’t any Europe left to leave. December – Nicola Sturgeon is shot in mysterious circumstances, chief inspector Yuri Karakin of the Scottish KGB promised a full investigation. Cliff Richard is set to perform a Christmas concert in Trump Tower. ‘Four years of grumbling’ is still available at the Gate, Steampacket and Booths in Swanwick.
