Book Review

In the Woods by Tana French

Tana French writes books which are quite hard to categorize – and aren’t they always the good ones? The early stories focus around the Dublin Murder Squad, so - crime novel you’d think. But they’re much more complex than that, kind of literary psychological mystery tales, exceptionally good on the mystery, very tightly written and quite compulsive. A good place to start is the first Dublin story, In the Woods, which won numerous awards for this actor turned writer. It tells the tale of Adam Ryan, a 12-year-old Irish boy, found in a state of shock in woods, sitting with his back to a tree, and his shoes full of blood. His two friends, with whom he was playing, are never found. Move forward 20 years and Adam has changed name and identity to give himself a new life and is now a detective in Dublin, drawn by the romance and coolness of the job and perhaps by his childhood experiences. He seems a remarkably well adjusted chap, good at intense friendship. Then he starts investigating a recent child murder in the same place as the original disappearances. Tana French is brilliant at describing how people cope with things which go deep, when maybe you start to doubt your understanding of the world. And she’s very good at teasing out connections. She’s just published her seventh book – the first to break away from the Dublin series – to excellent reviews. In the woods is a captivating place to start. But if you like her style, there’s plenty more where it came from.

Set up in 1991, the John Eastwood Hospice exists to support its NHS partners in the organisation and delivery of palliative care services both in the John Eastwood Hospice and in the community. Palliative care aims to support people with advanced or progressive disease such as cancer, motor-neurone disease, heart failure or other long-term conditions, and to maximise quality of life for patients and their families. If symptoms or needs are complex, then referral to the specialist palliative care service at John Eastwood Hospice may be appropriate

Support the vital work done by the John Eastwood Hospice

Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

The specialist palliative care services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team of consultants in palliative medicine, palliative care nurses and health care assistants, clinical nurse specialists, occupational and complementary therapists, a social worker, chaplain and a clinical psychology team. This is achieved partly through the recruitment, training and organisation of a team of volunteers who support and supplement the professional care staff in the Hospice and the community in

order to enhance the environment and quality of life for patients and their families. The Hospice also provides additional resources and higher-level services not provided by the NHS through the continued development and improvement of the existing facilities used by patients at the Hospice. The work of the John Eastwood Hospice can be summarised in this statement: We like to think of a hospice as a place where people can have the quality of their remaining life enhanced by removing painful and other distressing symptoms of their illness. We aim to restore to the patient both comfort and dignity, to such a degree that they remain alert and able to take an interest in their surroundings and in their relatives and friends. Life, however limited, is very important and a hospice should not be just a place for dying - but for the continuation of being alive. In doing this vital work the John Eastwood Hospice relies entirely on fundraising and donations to meet its many commitments.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

If you would like to support the Hospice Trust there are many ways in which you can help from making a donation to leaving a legacy in your will or becoming a Friend of the Hospice, amongst many others. If you want to help with fundraising or find out more information about the hospice you can visit the website www.johneastwoodhospice.org.uk where there is more information or you can call 01623 416840 or email contact@johneastwoodhospice.org.uk John Eastwood Hospice Trust, Mansfield Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, NG17 4HJ. Over-50s are open to a transitional retirement Almost half of UK workers over the age of 50 would prefer to make a gradual transition towards retirement, research claims. Opinium polled 1,007 over-50s, all of whom earn more than £20,000 a year, and found that 49% would prefer to adjust the amount of time they work before giving up work altogether. More than two-thirds (70%) want to reduce the number of days they work each week, while 44% are keen to cut down the number of hours they work each day. The transitional approach was favoured among respondents in 11 of the UK’s 12 regions, while the North-East was the only exception with 34% of those polled favouring this option. Less than a third (31%) of respondents around the UK preferred the traditional option, where workers go from the usual work pattern to being fully retired in an instant.

Steve Cameron, pensions director at Aegon, said: “The concept of retirement is changing from traditional to transitional. As people enjoy longer life spans, they no longer yearn to down tools and start retirement in one fell swoop. “Over-50s in the UK see the appeal of gently easing of the amount of time they work or altering their working pattern. “Many see this as having the best of all worlds, beneitting mentally and socially from work, as well as continuing to receive an income, while simultaneously enjoying more leisure time. “It’s not only the individuals who’ll beneit; enabling individuals to remain economically active into later life is also good for employers and the broader economy.”

Talk to us about your retirement plans.

Turn right along the road and just after passing a 7.5t weight limit sign, turn left along a lane passing a signboard for ‘Hall Leys Farm’. Follow the lane as it bends sharp to the right then turn left along a signposted footpath to cross an open field. 17. Pass through a gap in a hedge to cross another open field. At the far side of the field pass through a gap in the hedge to cross another open field. At at the far side of the field cross over a footbridge and pass through a gap onto a road. 18. Cross the road to continue along a single-track road and signposted footpath, passing houses on both sides until reaching a T junction of roads. Turn right. The road turns into a lane and then narrows into a footpath and you will pass a wooden footbridge on your right. 19. After the footbridge continue with a stream on your right for a short distance, then turn left through a gap, onto a footpath with trees on both sides. The trees on the right are replaced with a fence. After some distance follow the path sharp left, then sharp right and downhill. 20. At the bottom continue with a fence on both sides, then follow the path sharp to the right to continue with a fence on the right and a hedge on the left. Upon reaching a large metal gate directly in front of you turn left through a small wooden gate, cross straight over a road and pass through a gap adjacent to a large wooden gate onto a lane. 21. After some distance the lane turns into a footpath and eventually you will reach a main road. Turn right and after a short distance turn right along a lane and signposted bridleway. Pass through a small wooden gate adjacent to a large metal gate and continue along the lane. 22. After some distance pass through a small wooden gate and back into the car park.

Mike’s Musings Mike has been writing for our other Voice Magazines for a few years now. So, to get everyone off on the right footing we’re going to bring you some of his classic articles each month to get you all up to speed. Enjoy!

As Mrs Merton used to say….. “Let’s have a heated debate”

Isn’t it strange, and rather worrying, that it is often the most inconsequential of things that frustrate us and I’ll bet that I’m not alone when I share one of my frustrations with you.

Well, I can understand (and, up to a point, forgive) the first, although if we are to be consistent with the beginnings of previous centuries, it should really be spoken out loud as Twenty Oh One.

Let me ask you some questions that I’m fairly certain you’ll know the answer to. 1. When was the Battle of Hastings? 2. When did Queen Victoria die? 3. When did the 1st World War begin?

As I’ve said, I can live with that, but when I hear people take the long winded way – and before you say anything I know a thing or two about long windedness! – instead of describing last year as Twenty Sixteen, I have to bite my tongue. Don’t they, and I realise that this might include you, not realise that they are using an extra syllable every time? Have they got sufficient breath that they can afford to needlessly waste some?

The answers, and there is no shame if you didn’t know because I’m only trying to make a point, are 1066, 1901, 1914. Now whether or not you got them right, have you mentally (or spoken out loud if you’re reading this on your own) said to yourself, Ten Sixty Six, Nineteen Oh One & Nineteen Fourteen? I certainly hope so! Next, and you should get these answers straightaway, firstly in what year in the 21st Century was the terrorist attack on New York’s Twin Towers and secondly, the year in which the UK Referendum on EU membership took place? Remarkably, it is nearly 18 years since we saw those dreadful scenes on 11th September 2001, and of course, the Referendum took place 2 years ago on 23rd June 2016. Now then, and this is what I’ve been leading up to, did you mentally say Two Thousand and One and Two Thousand and Sixteen?

My mantra is a simple one. Let’s all save a few syllables and protect the ozone layer. Having made the point, let me just test you, in what year did David Cameron become Prime Minister? Now that you know the harm you’re doing to the environment, I hope, with pride, that you loudly proclaimed Twenty Ten! Talking of political leaders, got me to thinking of those who have led the Conservative Party. Can you, in your own good time and without tapping on your phone, name the last ten Tory leaders. NB – before you ask, they may not necessarily have been Prime Minister.

Theresa May, David Cameron, Michael Howard, Ian Duncan-Smith, William Hague, John Major, Margaret Thatcher, Ted Heath, Alec Douglas-Home & Harold Macmillan

Buds and flowers on fruit trees and bushes are very vulnerable to sudden unexpected spring frosts. A covering of fleece is often the answer if a cold patch is forecast, especially if you’re growing against a wall or fence. Use sticks or canes to keep the cover off the flowers and during the day open it up to allow pollination. When primroses have finished flowering lift and divide for more next year. And cut back forsythia to strong young shoots once it has gone over. This will also encourage next year’s blooms.

r

Lift and divide perennials now and pinch out the growing tips of young plants or cuttings such as sweet peas, pelargoniums and sweet peas to encourage bushy growth and more flowers in summer. Clematis and honeysuckle will start to bound away with the spring, so tie them in to stakes to stop wind damage.

TOP TIP!

Round about now lawns start to grow consistently and once you start mowing you’ll see any problems which have developed over the winter. Often this will be bare patches which can be mended through an application of grass seed. The trouble with seed is that it may be difficult getting it to germinate. A way to speed up the process is to add seed to damp compost in a tray or bucket, cover with clingfilm and keep somewhere warm. It will probably start to develop little roots in a few days and you can sow it into the patch, having raked over the surface, added a bit of crumbly soil and covered with soil or more unseeded compost to deter the birds. 06/11/2018 18:16

Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Football writer at Trinity Mirror

The high hopes of some Nottingham Forest fans at the start of this season may have been somewhat let down. However, are there signs that the club may be building on firmer foundations… here’s our Barry with his thoughts. The City Ground expansion plans announced earlier this month by Nottingham Forest, shows the vision Evangelos Marinakis has for the football club and it’s no surprise fans are rather excited. Forest’s stadium, one of football’s most iconic venues, has been largely untouched for 20 years since the Trent End was built for Euro 96 – and in truth, it shows. During that time, the City Ground has been left behind by the likes of Derby County and Leicester City with the club consistently missing out on valuable funds spent by corporate and hospitality clients, owing to their rivals more modern facilities. If Forest are to move forward as a club on and off the pitch, then having a genuinely world-class stadium is paramount and the regeneration of the Trentside area is key to that plan. The plans, which would see a brandnew Peter Taylor Stand, and work done to improve the Bridgford, Trent End and Brian Clough Stands increasing the capacity to 38,000, along with a museum and various

28

other additions, show that Forest are finally set to step into the new century. For two decades, the Reds have languished outside the top flight of English football and watched on as their rivals Derby have played in the top flight, and the Foxes winning the Premier League in 2016, but could the tide be turning? With record season ticket sales this season, coupled with an average attendance of more than 28,000 so far this, things are looking up for Forest and fans have reason to feel a little more optimistic about life by the Trent. It’s highly unlikely they’ll secure a place in the end of season play-offs owing to their frustratingly inconsistent form, but progress has and is being made and fans shouldn’t lose sight of that, in a world which is becoming increasingly impatient. Given their performances in recent seasons, to have a glimmer of a play-off spot going into the final ten games is a marked improvement, and with the level of support following Forest, fans should be enthused about the future of their club.
