So we are nearly half way through the year and the sun is shining as I type!

you want to get fit in the summer sunshine whilst earning money, contact us now!

Last month we had such great feedback from out Grindleford feature and I can’t thank the local businesses and residents enough for their help in getting that together. A special thank you has to go to the Grindleford Community Shop, specifically June and Sarah and of course Alan Jacques who wrote the content for us. They were such a fantastic help and source of local knowledge that we couldn’t have done it without them.

Happy Reading,

This month we are focussing on the Village of Eyam. It’s probably the best-known Village in the country when mentioned in relation to the plague but again, it has so much more to offer! The Eyam Museum has been a great help and Darryl had a lovely time visiting all the local businesses and researching the area, he was made to feel very welcome.

Local, Professional Veterinary Care Opening Hours

We are probably going to take a short break on these particular features just whilst the Peak District is inundated with visitors over the Summer Holidays but if we don’t run a feature in June, then we will certainly bring it back for September – if you have a particular village that you would like us to feature, drop us a line, we’ll be glad to hear from you. In other news, we have partnered up with Helen’s Trust. It is a fantastic local charity that provides real support during what must be the most difficult time for individuals and their families. Without fabulous charities like Helen’s Trust providing their service, I can only imagine how desolate someone could feel. We are incredibly honoured and humbled to contribute to this amazing charity. We’ll talk more in the coming months about what we are doing but for this month, we just wanted to tell you a little more about the charity and the good work that they do, so see page 5. Finally, thanks again for all your positive feedback towards the magazine. We are trying to bring you what you would like and need. We’re also boosting our social media presence as mentioned last month, so hop on the book of face and give us a like. Also, we’re still a few people short for delivery rounds, if

WE POWER SWEEP WITH The industry approved system

In 2019 we supported 250 people. Often we provide a combination of support such as nightsits followed by regular weekly respite during the day. Sometimes we will support someone for a short time to help through a particularly difficult or exhausting time, and then we will support again at a later stage.

Our services are free to our beneficiaries and are not means tested because we believe this can cause unnecessary delays in providing the help people need. We provide care, equipment and support and in fact we will consider requests for anything that will make the difference in enabling our beneficiary to stay in their own home.

‘We are so grateful for the help we received from Helen’s Trust when we were desperately struggling to get some night care to help us look after Mum at home. Your help came quickly and at a vital time when we were struggling to find help.’

Our staff team are extremely resourceful, skilled and passionate about the support we give to our beneficiaries. We consider that we deliver a lot on small resources and we are proud of our reputation and the innovative and flexible nature of our services.

‘I would like to say thank you for stepping in so quickly when I needed it the most. Knowing I had some help and support when I needed it most was a great help’ We have over 18 years of experience of supporting people with terminal illness at home. We are governed by a Board of 6 trustees from varying professional backgrounds and additionally we are supported by approximately 70 volunte ers who help us with fundraising and administrative tasks on an ad hoc basis. Of these we have a core group of around 20 volunteers who help us out on a regular basis.

Proud to be serving the Peak District for over 20 years

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood

To say Margaret Atwood is a bit of a superstar writer is an understatement. In the wake of The Handmaid’s Tale on TV, which has introduced the Canadian author to a whole new audience, she’s arriving on our shores in autumn for a sell-out speaking tour of the UK. So fans are currently waiting for Testaments, described as a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. But in the meantime a short treat from Margaret Atwood is The Penelopiad, written as part of a series in which wellknown current writers such as Philip Pullman and Jeanette Winterson have re-told myths from ancient times. In the original story, Penelope is the perfect devoted wife of Odysseus, silently weaving and waiting for her hero husband to return covered in glory from a conquering voyage around the world. But The Penelopiad naturally gives us a slightly different version of events. Sly, feisty, clever and funny, Penelope is keeping the kingdom together while her husband slays dragons and sleeps with goddesses. She’s supported, if that is the word, by a chorus of “naughty” maids who, like most bit players in these kinds of story, come to a sticky end. Needless to say, the chaps in this telling of the tale don’t emerge covered in glory, but it is immense fun with some serious barbs and you don’t need any knowledge of Greek myths to get it.

EYAM

Eyam (Pronounced Ee’m) Eyam is perhaps the most well known and most visited of all Derbyshire’s villages, and is located in relative isolation in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District, surrounded by a rugged landscape of rolling limestone hills. The inhabitants are very proud of their village and its place in history for Eyam is known famously as the “Plague Village”. Thousands of visitors’ flock to the village every year from all over the world, fascinated by the story of sacrifice which the village has to tell. The village of Eyam was recorded within the Domesday Book and contains many fascinating architectural gems. In most cases the best way to get a full flavour of the village and its rich history is by wandering around the beautiful lanes and among the ancient buildings that are spread throughout. Limestone, lead and other mineral mining was responsible for Eyam’s early prosperity and became the major source of employment in the area, this was well supported in following years by the trade of cotton, silk and shoe making; tourism and a close sense of community play a key part of the village’s success today. A Short History of Eyam (Pt 2)

POST OFFICE

Eyam (Pronounced Ee’m) The famous outbreak of Bubonic Plague began in the month of September 1665 when contaminated cloth from London was delivered to the village travelling tailor “George Viccars”; within fourteen months a third of the village population had died from the disease that was also sweeping across the capital London. Following the outbreak, during the months that followed, the residents took the decision to quarantine the village and themselves in a desperate bid to prevent the dreadful disease from spreading to neighbouring villages and towns. It’s acknowledged that this valiant act of self-

www.hannahbennett.co.uk A Short History of Eyam (Pt 3) sacrifice may well have saved thousands of lives throughout the north of England, although this decision certainly contributed to the two hundred and sixty that died from the village. The best way to truly find out about the plague and the legacy it left is to look within the village itself. Many descendants from the plague survivors still reside in the village today and commemorative plaques to the victims are displayed on the walls or outside the houses where they lived; and died. The weather vane at the museum is a “black rat” which best reflects the main theme of items and information on show,

and it’s within the museum you can get a real feel of how the plague effected the village and the people who resided there. With graphic and colourful displays, you gain a real understanding of the plague and the part it’s played throughout history, where it came from, how it spread and how we can control it today. Even without the fascinating stories surrounding the plague that is now so intertwined within the village’s history, Eyam itself is still a must place to visit if you’re in or around the Peak District.

Springtime birds across the Peak. There’s freshness in the air, and in woodlands, hedgerows, and gardens across the Peak District the spring birds are busy – holding territories, and attracting mates to nest and to breed. By late April and into May, the birdsong reaches a crescendo as if driven by a primal urgency to fulfil this annual task. Following a mild winter the more common birds such as blue tits seem to be very abundant now. And their calls of ‘tsee-tseetsee’ combined with harsh churrings ring out from the tops of trees and shrubs such as hedgerow hawthorns. They are joined by the persistent and loud see-saw calls of great tits, the loud, melodious songs of blackbirds, and the rich ‘squeaky wheel’ song of the ubiquitous robins. Male chaffinches sing from the highest branches of trees and tall shrubs. Along the Monsal Trail at Hassop, a local carrion crow chips in with a harsh, loud ‘kraa-kraa’, and of course, a beady eye as it watches out for easy pickings of fresh-laid eggs or young birds in the nest! Springtime nesting is a busy time for smaller songbirds but presents opportunities for predators too. The local residents are joined by summer migrants throughout May and June with increasing numbers of willow warblers, whitethroats, blackcaps and chiffchaffs all adding to morning and evening choruses. The repeated ‘chiff-chaff’ song has been heard in and around woodlands since late March, and this is especially so as in mild winters more of these delightful little

birds spend the whole year with us. Both blackcaps and chiffchaffs frequently come to feed at wintertime bird-tables. On the Peak’s high ground, the birds of wild moorland take over with curlew, lapwing, and snipe all displaying over their breeding grounds. The smaller songbirds of open ground such as meadow pipit and skylark fly high with aerial displays and songflights. Their challenge is to hold a breeding territory but also to avoid predators such as sparrowhawk and merlin. Once in the air these tiny songsters are hard to see and as they end their singing they descend back to earth with characteristic ‘parachute’ flights. A further part of their behaviour involves decoy landings to avoid giving away their nest sites to either avian predators like crows for example, or terrestrial predators such as foxes. This is both a busy time for our songbirds but also one fraught with potential danger at every turn.

BEE FRIENDLY GARDENING

Bee.

The droning of bumblebees as you work in your garden or, better still, relax in an easy chair in the shade is the quintessential sound of summer. And, in general, plants that are good for Bumblebees are also good for many kinds of pollinating insects: honey bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and others. In Britain, as well as the familiar Bumblebees and Honey Bees, we have over two hundred species of Solitary

ESTABLISHED OVER 25 YEARS

Changes in the wider countryside and modern farming practices have placed huge pressures on our wild bees. As a result, gardens play an increasingly important role. They cover more than a million acres and in some areas gardens now contain greater species diversity and population densities of bees than the surrounding countryside.

Our Services include:

• Septic Tank Emptying & Repairs • • • • •

Some people feel that what they can do at home will make little difference to the bigger picture. But, for bees at least, the decision concerning the choice of even a single plant can make a difference.

THE BEES NEEDS Bees need a succession of the right flowering plants from early Spring through to Autumn. Some bees have short tongues and feed on shallow flowers such as Aubretia and Cotoneaster. Others are long-tongued and prefer deep flowers such as Foxgloves (Digitalis) and Delphiniums. All bees like to feed on one kind of flower at a time, so it is better to plant in groups when possible.

• Dust Supression • High Pressure Drain Jetting • Snow Plough & Gritting Service

Green Gardens Based in the Hope Valley, Derbyshire

Good Bee Friendly herbaceous plants that should be available to plant now include: Catmints (Nepeta), hardy Geraniums, Lupins, perennial Wallflowers (Erysimum), and Veronicas.
