Book Review

Door to Door Pick Up

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood

To say Margaret Atwood is a bit of a superstar writer is an understatement. In the wake of The Handmaid’s Tale on TV, which has introduced the Canadian author to a whole new audience, she’s arriving on our shores in autumn for a sell-out speaking tour of the UK. So fans are currently waiting for Testaments, described as a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. But in the meantime a short treat from Margaret Atwood is The Penelopiad, written as part of a series in which wellknown current writers such as Philip Pullman and Jeanette Winterson have re-told myths from ancient times. In the original story, Penelope is the perfect devoted wife of Odysseus, silently weaving and waiting for her hero husband to return covered in glory from a conquering voyage around the world. But The Penelopiad naturally gives us a slightly different version of events. Sly, feisty, clever and funny, Penelope is keeping the kingdom together while her husband slays dragons and sleeps with goddesses. She’s supported, if that is the word, by a chorus of “naughty” maids who, like most bit players in these kinds of story, come to a sticky end. Needless to say, the chaps in this telling of the tale don’t emerge covered in glory, but it is immense fun with some serious barbs and you don’t need any knowledge of Greek myths to get it.

Fire at Jerry Green Dog Rescue – How you can help.

The fire, which happened over night on the 4th April 2019 at the Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Nottinghamshire Centre, thankfully, injured none of the staff or rescue dogs. However, there was considerable damage done to the boiler room and equipment where the fire started. This boiler ensures the centre is able to house dogs searching for their forever home. In the short term, centre staff have purchased heaters to ensure the kennels continue to be a safe and warm environment. The cost of these alone has had an impact and with the boiler needing to be replaced and repairs looming to ensure the future heating of the centre, we wonder if you would be able to help. The main reception area at Jerry Green Dog Rescue will be open as normal. Jerry Green Dog Rescue are grateful for any donation you are able to make to help cover the cost of the temporary heating, and to maintain the warmth while we plan for the long term future solution.

Rambles with RafFa lake and

I’ve said before that our resident rambler, David from JH legal is a master of finding some hidden gems, when it comes to working out these walks and this month is a prime example of that. It’s likely that I would’ve never have visited this area but it is well worth the short trip down the M1 for some lovely countryside, and a nice dog-friendly walk.

5. Pass a water tower on your right and continue with a tall metal fence on your right. When the fence ends turn sharp right onto a footpath signposted for ‘Kimberley’. When the metal fence ends and gives way to a wooden fence continue until reaching a road.

We begin outside Strelley Hall before crossing over the M1 and following a section of the Robin Hood Way to Swingate. We walk past the Swingate Water Tower and then loop through some nice countryside bordering Kimberley and Awsworth before heading back towards Swingate and retracing our steps back to the start.

6. Turn left along the road until it ends then keep straight ahead along a marked footpath with some trees on your right. When the trees end, keep straight across an open section of field and then continue with trees on your right. Just prior to reaching the very far side of the field turn right into the trees along a footpath going downhill. 7. Follow the path back out of the trees and keep on it ignoring any other path to the right, keeping a drop to your right. You will head back into some trees for a short distance. At a yellow marker post on your left turn right ignoring the path uphill in front of you. Pass another marker post on your left to emerge back out of the trees. 8. Continue to pass 2 more marker posts on your right. A short distance after the second marker post the hedge on your right ends. At this point turn left following the arrow and the ‘Great Northern Railway Path’. Continue along the path with trees on your right and just a few trees and then open views to your left. 10. Mike’us sings M

Things that annoy all decent minded people (well ... me at least)

Part 1 - Can something please be done to stop people eating and drinking in the auditorium when they go to the cinema? There can surely be nothing more annoying in the entire so called civilised world that to have your concentration and enjoyment at the pictures spoiled by people slurping drinks, munching popcorn or crunching nachos. Solution – if I had my way! Have an MPO (Munch Police Officer) allocated to each film on show with powers to a) eject the first to fall foul of Gyles’ Law and b) have the film stopped whilst any further offenders are publicly humiliated and made to stand in a specially reserved section of the foyer. PS – when did it become an essential feature of a night at the theatre (or attending a concert) that people had to have a drink with them? PPS – whilst we’re at it. Can someone please create an app that ensures that when a phone is used at a concert to either photograph or video record the artist(e)s on stage, the device spontaneously combusts?

Part 2 - When replacing a toilet roll, why can’t everyone please remember to fit the new roll in such a way as the paper comes over - and not under! - the wooden/plastic/ stainless steel roller? I know I’m one of many who get annoyed by this, particularly when the act is perpetrated by visitors to my house. Grrrrr!

SKIP HIRE TOP SOIL AGGREGATES

Solution – if I had my way! It is perhaps too late to change the habits of certain irritating adults. However, to help preserve the sanity of future generations we must introduce a programme of post ‘potty training’ education. This could be supplemented by asking teachers to carry out toilet spot checks at school and giving ‘stars’ to well-trained youngsters.

Gardener’s Calendar

The urge to get all your summer bedding out is almost overwhelming at this time of year, but don’t give in till you’re more or less sure that the risk of frost is past – which means the end of May for most people unless you’re in a sheltered pocket. Meanwhile harden off indoor or greenhouse grown plants by taking them out during the day and back into shelter at night. Spring bulbs will easily last you more than one year, but not if you cut back the foliage. They need to keep on photosynthesising to store starch in the bulb for next year. This even applies to tulips. So just deadhead and if possible given them a liquid fertiliser dressing. The leaves will die down quite quickly.

r

Forget-me-nots are a marmite plant. You either love them or hate them. Very pretty for a short period but then they get very straggly and messy and self seed to an amazing degree, spreading everywhere. One answer is to enjoy the flowers then pull most of them out after they have flowered and before they go to seed.

Here at Piped Up we offer a wide range of services from a replacement washer to a full heating system...

Dandelions are a pain in the wrong place, but they’re also a great source of early pollen for bees, so if you’re cultivating a wildlife friendly garden, don’t use weedkiller on them or you’re likely to kill the bees which try to drink from them. A trusty trowel will hoof them out, but try to bring the whole root out so they don’t get a chance to come back.

COOPER’S CORNER

Fantastic Bank Holiday Offers this May see website for details

Racism – It’s not a subject we should still be talking about as we approach the second decade of the 21st century. But here we are again. We are quick to condemn individuals for their acts but isn’t there more we collectively should be doing to stamp it out. Here’s our Barry with his thoughts. There seems to have been a worrying increase in the number of racist incidents in football over the last few weeks, and the game certainly has a very concerning problem which isn’t going away. Or does it? Football is a microcosm of society. Whatever happens in society, generally will be seen in football and that’s what is being reflected here. If we’ve learnt anything from the national disgrace that is the handling of Brexit, we now know just how big the divides are within society and we’re seeing those play out on the football pitch. Players should be safe from abuse. Players should be afforded the platform to go on and showcase their abilities, not be inhibited or scared and worry about what’s being hurled down from the stands, or in the case of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the north London derby earlier this season, a banana thrown at his feet. The question is, what can we do about it? Football’s major international governing bodies, FIFA and UEFA appear utterly incompetent when it comes to dealing with the issue. They’re much harder on a

player wearing a sponsor on his undershirt than a club or country which allows its fans to bellow monkey chants at the likes of Danny Rose or Raheem Sterling. Until the authorities, and I include our own in that, take a stand and start dishing out some severe punishments, then people will continue to act as they see fit. Start dishing out jail terms, deducting points from clubs, making them play games behind closed doors and revoking their television money. Clubs at the top level and on the international stage exist for no other reason than to make a profit, so to hit them where it hurts could be an effective catalyst for change. Until that point, we’ll still have debate after debate. It’ll go quiet for a little bit until the next flare-up and then we’ll all stamp our feet and demand action - repeat the process as many times as you see fit.
