Nutt & Sons celebrate 150 years in business!
PART 1
Q
UEEN Victoria was on the throne, Gladstone was Prime Minister, Sainsbury’s opened its first store in Drury Lane in London and the clipper ship Cutty Sark was launched. The year was 1869. An agricultural labourer could expect to earn £41 per year, a miner £63 per year and a teacher £97 per year. It was against this backdrop that William Robert Nutt, great-grandfather of the current Managing Director, David Nutt, opened the original WR Nutt shop in Clay Cross. This year marks the 150th year of continuous trading by the Nutt family in Clay Cross.
Trading and enterprise are firmly entrenched in the blood of the Nutt family. As far back as the eighteenth century, George Nutt, current Managing Director David’s great-greatgreat grandfather, was believed to be a horse dealer in Uppingham, near Peterborough. George’s son, Thomas Nutt, moved from Uppingham to Peterborough and “commenced in a humble way in the hardware line”. When he had accumulated enough money, he became a horse dealer and built up a “very large business”. One of his clients was the eldest son of the Duke of Teck. Thomas Nutt died at an early age – only 41 years – and left his wife ER Nutt (Elisabeth) and eleven children. With eleven children to feed, Elisabeth became a businesswoman in her own right. An advertisement from Peterborough at the time, shows that E.R. Nutt was a dealer in “High- Class Hunters, match horses, harness horses and ladies’ hacks and cobs”. She also

gave riding lessons to ladies, gentlemen and children. This business was run from Rutland House, Eastgate, in Peterborough. Elisabeth remarried a man called Mr Burton. A further advert from the day describes E.R. Nutt as a “licensed horse and cattle slaughterer” based at the above address. The business undertaken was reported as “animals killed with the RSPCA Humane Killers and removed at the Shortest Notice”. Further business ventures included “Manufacturer of blood and bone compound manure. Specially prepared for all crops. Analysis guaranteed”. One of Thomas and Elisabeth’s sons, William Robert Nutt, who is David’s greatgrandfather, came to Derbyshire and set up a business at King Street in Clay Cross in 1869. William Robert was a general dealer, but mainly in furniture, flooring and American clocks. He was certainly no push over. In January 1872, he sued Midland Railway at Derby County Court to the sum of £7 for failure to deliver American clocks from a business in Sheffield.
Above: ER (Elisabeth) Nutt, David’s great-great-grandmother, was a renowned and successful horse dealer in Peterborough Left: Thomas Nutt, David’s greatgreat- grandfather, was a horse dealer in Peterborough during the late nineteenth century.

Slimming World Recipe Burger in a bowl So, here’s an interesting idea. Let’s face it the best of the burger is the filling so why not shed the bread and fill up on the tasty part! Serves: 4
Ready in: 25 minutes
Syns per serving: 1
Ingredients:
Method: 1. Spray a large, heavy-based non-stick frying pan with lowcalorie cooking spray and place over a high heat. Add the beef, onion and garlic and stir-fry for 7-8 minutes, or until the beef is cooked through and the onions have softened. Take the pan off the heat and drain any fat from the mixture. Season lightly. 2. Meanwhile, put all the SW super sauce ingredients in a bowl with 4 tbsp water and whisk until well combined. 3. Mix together the lettuce, gherkins, onions and tomatoes and divide between 4 wide bowls. Spoon the beef mixture on top, divide the SW super sauce between the burgers and serve hot. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk
• Low-calorie cooking spray • 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) • 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • ½ iceberg lettuce, roughly shredded • 8 gherkins, sliced • 1 small red onion, finely chopped • 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped

Body and Sole
Lash Lift & Tint When I noticed the special offer that Heather at Body & Sole had on last month – Lash Lift and Tint – I called Heather straight away to book me in!! So, straight into Heathers impeccably kept treatment room and I must confess, when she told me that I had to lay there for an hour, couldn’t open my eyes (obviously) and stay as still as possible….I was worried. I’ve had my lashes tinted for many years and I always struggle at the point I’m told ‘don’t open your eyes’!! So, Heather cleans, nourishes and then perms and tints the lashes. It really is fascinating and as you can see from the pictures – quite colourful too! After the perm was applied, I was pleased to discover that I had a choice of a mini treatment. I opted for a neck and shoulder massage as I was getting a little tense fighting with myself about the fact that I couldn’t open my eyes! Thankfully, this settled me right down. As Heather said, “we’re both here, why not make it even more enjoyable”. By the time she had finished my massage, it was time to remove the perm – it’s like she planned it!! We then moved onto the lash tinting process… and again I’m getting a little twitchy! However, Heather had thought of every detail to ensure total customer satisfaction and during the tint process, I was treated to a second mini treatment and I opted for a taster of reflexology. My other choices were either an Indian head massage or a hand and arm massage. It was heavenly and yet again, completed just in time to remove the lash tint.

So, it’s the start of the day, I’ve had 2 massages, feeling relaxed and time for the big reveal! I’ve had lash tints before and mostly it means I don’t need to wear make up on holiday but this is a whole different ball game but don’t take my word for it… see for yourself! I actually look like I’ve got falsies on! It’s personal preference whether you want to use mascara (I like big lashes!) and I’m assured that the effects will last 6-8 weeks and it’s looking pretty likely that this is the case. And your treatment doesn’t finish there. In 2 weeks after your treatment, you have a follow up appointment to see how it is going and to tint your bottom lashes and you get a taster of a nourishing clear mascara to take home – all for this fantastic introductory offer of £40!!!!!! Heather really does offer treatment to treasure and this is no exception. I encourage you all to take an hour for yourself, you won’t be disappointed. *patch test required 48hrs beforehand

Book Review Circe by Madeline Miller
If you enjoyed last month’s recommendation of the Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood,
you’ll love Circe by Madeline Miller. ( Kir-Keh if you’re interested in the Greek pronunciation).
Chosen as a book of the year by numerous reviewers and newspapers, the novel casts Circe, the witch goddess of Homer’s Odyssey (the one who trapped poor Odysseus on her island for a year and turned sailors into pigs) as a heroine in her own right, not just a bit player in a man’s mythic tale.

As your local Disney addict, I have all the knowledge to book you not only the perfect Disney stay, but all the right restaurants while you are there. If you stay in one of the amazing Disney hotels you have the chance to get one of the dining packages, which means you can eat for free for the whole duration of your Disney holiday. There are different levels to choose from starting with free breakfast through to character and a la carte dining. It’s not all about burgers and fries. Breakfast with Mickey and Minnie, lunch with Cinderella and how about dinner with Beauty and the Beast? Did you know the new Star Wars Land Galaxy’s Edge opens on the 29th August this year, Toy Story Land opened last year and the amazing world of Pandora opened the year before. All I can tell you is there has never been a better time to plan your Walt Disney World stay than now. That’s what I’m doing. Disney isn’t just for families either, it brings out the inner child in us all. There is nothing more special than the first time you walk down Main Street in Magic Kingdom and see Cinderella’s Castle. For more details about Walt Disney World in Florida, Disneyland Paris or a Disney cruise holiday get in touch, I never tire of talking all things Disney.
If there is a similarity to the Atwood book, it is the idea of female empowerment, giving a woman the right to her own story as part of the history of women which, it might be argued, has been so often left out of official (or even literary) accounts. But it’s also a lovely, lyrical and sometimes very dark tale where the expectations of normal human morals are turned on their head. These are the stories of mortals, gods and monsters which are perfectly in tune and relevant for a modern audience. And the story is also a subtle sideways look at what it means to be a human, whether male or female. It’s compelling and beautifully written. It educates and entertains and captivates. A brilliant joyous treat.

DERBYSHIRE
Interview with Debbie Kinghorn of NLP4Kids
Debbie has been writing articles for The Voice for the last 3 months, so we thought we’d interview her to find out more about NLP and how it can help you and your children. Here’s what we found out. What is NLP and how can it help my child? NLP is a form of therapy that can be used to help people learn how to control their thoughts, emotions and behaviours. It stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. “Neuro” relates to the brain and “linguistic” refers to language and how it is used inside the mind and out of the mouth! “Programming” describes the patterns and habits created, learnt and followed. So basically, it’s how we use our mind and our language to learn, communicate and create habits in our lives
divorce. Helping them has a significant impact on their relationship with their child or children. There are some examples of these parents on my website (they can explain much better than me) www.childtherapyderbyshire.nlp4kids.org/ parents/ I also provide parenting support and coaching using NLP techniques. I often do this as either a one to one or as a workshop. There’s information on future parent workshops on my Facebook page and website by the way.
What kind of problems can you help with?
How is NLP different to other similar therapies?
The most common issues I help children with are:
There are a few differences. The biggest in how quick NLP is, compared to traditional therapies. Due to its nature, a significant change is achieved in one or two sessions and on average most children and adults will only need around 4 sessions.
Anxiety – general, school related, exam, social etc Bullying Confidence building Emotional challenges e.g. anger management Problems arising from family changes e.g. separation/ divorce, bereavement, relationship issues. Communication issues e.g. within families, selective mutism etc. What age children do you work with? We suggest a minimum of 7 years of age (although I have worked with children slightly younger before) up to 18. Do you only work with children? No, I also work with adults. The adults I most frequently work with are those who initially tell me about a concern regarding their child and then go on to tell me they’re finding parenting difficult due to something that happened in their own life, e.g. a childhood trauma, bereavement or separation/

Also, NLP is very forward focussed in its practice. We spend very little time looking back at the problems and more time forward at the tools and techniques to fix the problem. NLP also works a lot in the unconscious. What I mean by that is a lot of our patterns of behaviour have become unconscious thoughts and actions, often we don’t even realise we’re doing them. The techniques we use target these unconscious processes and start making changes there. Are there any instances where you can’t help a child? Occasionally, yes. That’s why I give a free initial consultation. It gives me the opportunity to meet the child and be certain I can help them, It also gives them the opportunity to meet me and make sure they’re happy to work with me.
Debbie suggests following her on Facebook as there are lots of free tips and opportunities to for advice on #AskAwayMonday. facebook.com/NLP4KidsDerbyshire Alternatively to speak to Debbie or book a free consultation Call me, Debbie Kinghorn on 07747 090871 or email DebbieK@NLP4Kids.org. 28 Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

Rambles with RafFa lake and
This walk is a little further out but is worth the journey to check out a little piece of history. The Parliament Oak, which the legend says King John held an informal parliament under following a revolt by the Welsh. Now it sits in a layby off the A6075 and is about halfway around our walk. Another great ramble from David at JH Legal – what a star he is!
We begin on the outside of Warsop and follow Oakfield Lane to cross the A6075. The route then winds through a part of the historic Sherwood forest before reaching the Parliament Oak. We cross back over the A6075 and wind back through the forest before heading back through the outskirts of Warsop, back to where we
trees along a footpath running parallel with the road over to your right. Continue straight ahead for some distance and eventually you will reach a T junction with a lane. Turn left to continue along the lane. After a short distance the lane bends around to the left and a little further on the lane narrows to a footpath. At this point ignore the path to the left and continue straight ahead going through the trees. 3. RAMTC brings you another hit show….
Alfreton Rotary Award for super cycler Kian Pearson The Rotary Club of Alfreton were in attendance at the David Nieper Academy to present an award to Kian Pearson in recognition of his fantastic efforts cycling the John O Groats to Lands End (JOGLE) challenge in aid of Dementia UK. Kian rode the 998-mile route in a world beating time of just 14 days and raised over £8000. An achievement that led to Kian being nominated for The Rotary in Britain and Ireland Young Citizen of the Year Award. To recognise this Mandy Oldknow, President of the Rotary Club of Alfreton presented Kian with a certificate and custommade trophy at a special Assembly on 30th April. We all look forward to seeing what Kian does in the future. Whether it’s more fantastic fundraising or stunning bike challenges we’re sure the sky’s the limit for this cycling superstar!
RAMTC are bringing another cracking show to the community this year, 9 to 5. There is still time to get your tickets and support the group by contacting Mansfield Theatre. It will be a great evening out, as it always is and if you don’t know the story, here is a brief outline below….
Set in the late 1970's, this hilarious story of friendship & revenge is outrageous, thought provoking, risqué and even a little romantic. Pushed to boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss, three female office workers concoct a plan to turn the tables on their despicable boss and transform their workplace. It’s about teaming up, standing up and taking care of business! This hilarious production is brought to you by the award winning Ripley & Alfreton Musical Theatre Company.

What would happen to you and your family if you became ill and unable to work? As you go through life your financial focus changes. In our experience we see key life defining moments having a massive impact on the financial security of an individual or family. Our lives are marked with significant events, for example buying our first home, getting married, having children, perhaps getting divorced or a loved one becoming sick. All these, and many more, have an impact on our finances. What would happen to you and your family if you became ill and unable to work?........... According to a survey of financial advisers undertaken by Royal London, many advisers feel that younger consumers are looking at their income protection needs too late. Is this because they don’t feel a ‘need’ or is just because they’re unaware of what protection is available to give them security? In our opinion, if you start paying income protection from a young age and get used to the monthly outgoing then it is much easier to manage and budget for. Knowing that you don’t run the risk of losing your home for example and having a regular monthly income if you are unable to work due to illness, is a reassurance we all would like so let’s start talking about it sooner rather than later. Short or long-term policies are available so make sure you’re aware of what is out there so you can manage the unexpected better.
Contact us today to discuss your protection needs. 12 Diamond Avenue, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottingham, NG17 7GR 01623 750000 info@hampshirehill.co.uk www.hampshirehill.co.uk Important information The way in which tax charges (or tax relief, as appropriate) are applied depends on individual circumstances and may be subject to future change. Mike’us sings M
This list of thankless jobs had me thinking about a weird thing I saw once when out walking – Someone had gone along a (particularly badly) poo lined path sticking little flags into each of the offending dollops. It’s something I’ve never been able to forget, despite trying. I mean why?!
Some thoughts
(from a near fully fit George) The good news is that he is feeling much better and would like to thank all those who have asked after his health. Whilst convalescing he has got round to thinking about why he ever decided to take on the thankless task of becoming UCIP’s People’s Champion. He has had so many bizarre conversations with locals who have ‘buttonholed’ him in the past twelve months or so, that his enthusiasm for the role has been sorely tested. Still, he consoles himself that he is a volunteer carrying out unpaid research for a laudable purpose and he could, although he doubts it, give it all up anytime he chooses. When I called round to see him last week he did say that he had every sympathy for those who were in what he called ‘impossible’ jobs that they just had to put up with as they had no other means of ‘putting food on the table!’ Here are a few he came up with:-
Public Relations Advisor to the POTUS:Let’s face it, the money may be good but who in their right mind would want to be responsible for ensuring that Donald Trump doesn’t, metaphorically speaking, put his foot (or any other part of his anatomy you can think of!) into it.
Tourist Officer for the Potteries with specific responsibility for Burslem:Anyone who knows this part of the world well, and particularly if they are regular visitors to Vale Park to watch Port Vale, will know that whoever is charged with promoting the area as a holiday destination, has next to
no chance of success. It may look as if it has suffered collateral damage in a war, but in reality, it is self-inflicted.
Dog Poo Finder:Not the most pleasant of jobs I’m sure most people would agree. However, if anyone out there is desperate for an environmental role that, whilst unpaid, is likely to be well rewarded by cash donations from grateful villagers, there is a vacancy for just such a role in Newton. NB – this will undoubtedly apply to other locations in our area. They would of course make themselves redundant if they managed to identify and ‘name and shame’ the irresponsible owners of such incontinent pets.

Manager of the Scottish Football team:For a nation that once proudly showed the world how the game should be played, Scotland is no longer producing the likes of Don Masson, Sandy Pate, John Robertson or Ted McMinn and it has become clear that whoever takes charge of the national team is now on a ‘hiding to nothing.’ It will be a long and painful process, but any future Scotland manager must get the Scottish Government to ban the sales of Macaroon Bars, Tunnock’s Caramel Wafers, deep fried Mars Bar Suppers and limit drinkers to no more than three pints of Tennent’s Lager in a session, before they will have any chance of producing successful footballers ..........................and that will never happen. Look out for more thoughts from George, in July.

Gardener’s Calendar
THE COMPLETE FLAT ROOFING SERVICE
There are quite a lot of opinions on moss in a garden. There are moss killers about for those who prefer perfect grass, and if you do want to get rid of it, cut back overhanging branches or foliage to allow the patch more light and aerate the ground properly so grass roots will survive better.
• FREE QUOTATIONS
But there’s also the view that if moss is growing in your garden, it’s probably because the conditions are right and that it might be worth thinking about leaving it be and letting it create a lush Japanese-style carpet which you don’t have to cut. It prefers cool, shady damp ground and you can help it to expand by transplanting tiny pieces from an existing bed.

HAS WINTER TAKEN ITS TOLL?
Water any edible crops in grow bags and containers once daily preferably in the early morning. If you have potatoes in containers don’t over-water as this may compact the soil and prevent tubers from swelling. Feed weekly.
FREE Health Check!
TOP TIP!
Top tip: Keeping thirsty plants well watered can be difficult if it’s hot this month... Dig a well around the base and this will enable to water to be absorbed deeper at root level. 06/11/2018 18:16

Oriental poppies are spectacular but can look very messy once they’ve flowered. Deadhead them and cut back to ground level to encourage new growth. You may also find that hardy geraniums will flower again later in the year if you cut them back after flowering.

So, the football season is over and all that’s left is the memories, some bad, some good and some, which were quite frankly bizarre – VAR has certainly had an impact on the beautiful game. But I’m not the one to make sense of it all. I’ll pass you over to our Barry for that honour… If you’re sitting down... We’ve had nine months of chaos, drama, chairmen exposing themselves on social media, clubs spying on each other and no shortage of incredible comebacks. And that barely scratches the surface. Have we ever known a campaign quite like it? I certainly can’t remember one where I’ve constantly used the phrase, ‘bloody football, eh’? In truth, we should have known we were in for something special after England’s terrific performance at the World Cup in Russia, which was followed up by an impressive Nations League campaign. At the time of penning this column, Derby County had just upset the odds to beat old foes Leeds United in the play-off semi-final, while Nottingham Forest watched on with eyes of envy as the Rams clocked up another Wembley appearance having failed in their quest for a top six finish. Elsewhere, Mansfield Town and manager David Flitcroft somehow managed to pass up the giftwrapped opportunity of promotion to League One and Notts County, well, oh dear Notts County. Installed as promotion favourites last summer following a fine season which saw them narrowly beaten by Coventry City in the play-off semi-final at Meadow Lane, the walls have since come crashing down around them. No longer can the Magpies call upon the prestigious title of ‘World’s Oldest League Club’ – a crown which will inevitably feel like a kick deep into the genitals for their fans, has now been passed over to Forest.
And no, it isn’t Stoke City. We’ve had that confirmed by the EFL – as if there was ever any doubt. Instead of facing up to life in the third tier, as they hoped would be their reward come the end of the season, they’re now plotting trips to Fylde, Bromley, Dover and Barrow. At least Notts’ old chums Chesterfield will be there to give them a warm embrace. What the Magpies’ collapse has shown for all to see, is that if you don’t get the right people on board, allow egos to take control and get recruitment all wrong, this is always a risk. I’ve written in this column earlier in the campaign about Alan Hardy’s indiscretions – a man who arguably had good intentions from the outset, but lacked the professionalism, respect or nous to ever allow the club to be managed successfully. Hardy’s desperation to be liked, to be front and centre became his downfall and now, he’ll forever be remembered as the man who took the oldest league club in world football, out of it. Getting back won’t be easy for Notts, they’ll be the big fish in a very competitive pond. Just ask Mansfield, Lincoln, Luton and more recently Chesterfield, just how tough the National League is, and make no mistake about it, they will be the big scalp. It will be a long road back for the Magpies, but it’ll be fascinating watching from close by to see how it all plays out. But first, they must sort out the ownership. Then and only then can this famous old bird start moving forward in the right direction.
