Nutt & Sons celebrate 150 years in business!

PART 1

Q

UEEN Victoria was on the throne, Gladstone was Prime Minister, Sainsbury’s opened its first store in Drury Lane in London and the clipper ship Cutty Sark was launched. The year was 1869. An agricultural labourer could expect to earn £41 per year, a miner £63 per year and a teacher £97 per year. It was against this backdrop that William Robert Nutt, great-grandfather of the current Managing Director, David Nutt, opened the original WR Nutt shop in Clay Cross. This year marks the 150th year of continuous trading by the Nutt family in Clay Cross.

Trading and enterprise are firmly entrenched in the blood of the Nutt family. As far back as the eighteenth century, George Nutt, current Managing Director David’s great-greatgreat grandfather, was believed to be a horse dealer in Uppingham, near Peterborough. George’s son, Thomas Nutt, moved from Uppingham to Peterborough and “commenced in a humble way in the hardware line”. When he had accumulated enough money, he became a horse dealer and built up a “very large business”. One of his clients was the eldest son of the Duke of Teck. Thomas Nutt died at an early age – only 41 years – and left his wife ER Nutt (Elisabeth) and eleven children. With eleven children to feed, Elisabeth became a businesswoman in her own right. An advertisement from Peterborough at the time, shows that E.R. Nutt was a dealer in “High- Class Hunters, match horses, harness horses and ladies’ hacks and cobs”. She also

gave riding lessons to ladies, gentlemen and children. This business was run from Rutland House, Eastgate, in Peterborough. Elisabeth remarried a man called Mr Burton. A further advert from the day describes E.R. Nutt as a “licensed horse and cattle slaughterer” based at the above address. The business undertaken was reported as “animals killed with the RSPCA Humane Killers and removed at the Shortest Notice”. Further business ventures included “Manufacturer of blood and bone compound manure. Specially prepared for all crops. Analysis guaranteed”. One of Thomas and Elisabeth’s sons, William Robert Nutt, who is David’s greatgrandfather, came to Derbyshire and set up a business at King Street in Clay Cross in 1869. William Robert was a general dealer, but mainly in furniture, flooring and American clocks. He was certainly no push over. In January 1872, he sued Midland Railway at Derby County Court to the sum of £7 for failure to deliver American clocks from a business in Sheffield.

Above: ER (Elisabeth) Nutt, David’s great-great-grandmother, was a renowned and successful horse dealer in Peterborough Left: Thomas Nutt, David’s greatgreat- grandfather, was a horse dealer in Peterborough during the late nineteenth century.

Book Review Circe by Madeline Miller

If you enjoyed last month’s recommendation of the Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, you’ll love Circe by Madeline Miller. ( Kir-Keh if you’re interested in the Greek pronunciation).

Chosen as a book of the year by numerous reviewers and newspapers, the novel casts Circe, the witch goddess of Homer’s Odyssey (the one who trapped poor Odysseus on her island for a year and turned sailors into pigs) as a heroine in her own right, not just a bit player in a man’s mythic tale. If there is a similarity to the Atwood book, it is the idea of female empowerment, giving a woman the right to her own story as part of the history of women which, it might be argued, has been so often left out of official (or even literary) accounts. But it’s also a lovely, lyrical and sometimes very dark tale where the expectations of normal human morals are turned on their head. These are the stories of mortals, gods and monsters which are perfectly in tune and relevant for a modern audience. And the story is also a subtle sideways look at what it means to be a human, whether male or female. It’s compelling and beautifully written. It educates and entertains and captivates. A brilliant joyous treat.

Slimming World Recipe Burger in a bowl So, here’s an interesting idea. Let’s face it the best of the burger is the filling so why not shed the bread and fill up on the tasty part! Serves: 4

Ready in: 25 minutes

Syns per serving: 1

Ingredients:

Method:

• Low-calorie cooking spray • 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) • 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • ½ iceberg lettuce, roughly shredded • 8 gherkins, sliced • 1 small red onion, finely chopped • 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped

1. Spray a large, heavy-based non-stick frying pan with lowcalorie cooking spray and place over a high heat. Add the beef, onion and garlic and stir-fry for 7-8 minutes, or until the beef is cooked through and the onions have softened. Take the pan off the heat and drain any fat from the mixture. Season lightly.

For the SW super sauce:

2. Meanwhile, put all the SW super sauce ingredients in a bowl with 4 tbsp water and whisk until well combined. 3. Mix together the lettuce, gherkins, onions and tomatoes and divide between 4 wide bowls. Spoon the beef mixture on top, divide the SW super sauce between the burgers and serve hot. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk

• 3 level tbsp extra-light mayonnaise • 5 tbsp fat-free fromage frais • 1 level tbsp American-style mustard • 2 tbsp tomato purée • 2 tsp white wine vinegar • ½ tsp garlic salt • ¼ tsp onion granules • ¼ tsp sweet smoked paprika

Look out for the white pheasants According to ornithologist and writer Mark Avery, around 35 to 40 million pheasants are released into the British countryside every autumn. This makes them the commonest bird in in our countryside at that time of year with their population density of around 50 per 100 hectares amazingly accounting for nearly a third of our the total wild bird biomass. Pheasants are beautiful and now successful birds and it is worth watching out for them coming to garden feeders across the Peak District. They breed in woods and low-lying heaths across the region and increasingly come to gardens during the winter months. Whilst the common or ‘ring-necked’ pheasant is a non-native or ‘alien’ in Britain, it is now one of our most familiar wild birds. They were originally found in Asia and our closest population was somewhere around Asian Georgia. However, pheasants were widely introduced and naturalised in Britain by the Normans, and maybe even earlier by the Romans. Across the planet, the pheasant is now one of the most abundant gamebirds in the world. The original British birds were the Caucasian species or sub-species and this was often called (mistakenly), the ‘Old English Pheasant’. Indeed, by the eleventh century, common pheasants were recorded in documents and as gifts; in 1059 the Saxon King Harold for example, offering the canons of Waltham Abbey a pheasant as a gift. By the 1500s, pheasants were popular for food and ornament, and becoming widespread and abundant.

Everything for a doggie fun filled day out suitable for the whole family. Prices

Our Peak District birds today are a mix of different varieties bred over the centuries; early landowners employing special ‘pheasant breeders’ to care for their precious birds. Henry VIII for example, had a French priest as a ‘fesaunt breeder’ for the royal table. Soon, pheasants began to be reared by artificial means to supplement naturalised stock and new species and sub-species were introduced. The Chinese ring-neck (Phasianus torquatus), first called the ‘Ring Pheasant’ arrived in 1768, imported from southern China and was bred into the established populations. We now frequently see black or melanistic birds and deep purple-coloured ones. However, at Bakewell, I was surprised to see three pure white ‘albino’ birds. They looked rather like the rare ‘snow grouse’ of the Cairngorms, the Ptarmigan! I guess these are all from one brood and possess what we call a double-recessive albino gene; but they are common pheasants not snow-grouse!

Here in Bakewell the Old House Museum opened its doors to visitors for the first time! This Tudor House, built in the 1530s, had had a varied life and by the early1950s was almost derelict and threatened with demolition by the local council. Rescued by the newly-formed Bakewell and District Historical Society its transformation into a museum began.

Society members and by the loving care of the subsequent succession of staff and volunteers the Old House Museum has reached its 60th birthday!

Gardener’s Calendar

There are quite a lot of opinions on moss in a garden. There are moss killers about for those who prefer perfect grass, and if you do want to get rid of it, cut back overhanging branches or foliage to allow the patch more light and aerate the ground properly so grass roots will survive better. But there’s also the view that if moss is growing in your garden, it’s probably because the conditions are right and that it might be worth thinking about leaving it be and letting it create a lush Japanese-style carpet which you don’t have to cut. It prefers cool, shady damp ground and you can help it to expand by transplanting tiny pieces from an existing bed.

r

A blessing or a curse, it’s your decision. Oriental poppies are spectacular but can look very messy once they’ve flowered. Deadhead them and cut back to ground level to encourage new growth. You may also find that hardy geraniums will flower again later in the year if you cut them back after flowering.

TOP TIP!

Top tip: Keeping thirsty plants well watered can be difficult if it’s hot this month... Dig a well around the base and this will enable to water to be absorbed deeper at root level. 06/11/2018 18:16

BEE FRIENDLY GARDENING

June can be one of the best months in the flower garden. Beds and borders are filling up and showing good colour and plants are still looking fresh and full of vigour. We should revel in the present moment while still keeping half an eye on the future. Now is the time for sowing seed for next year, both biennials such as Forget-me-nots (Myosotis) and Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) and perennials such as Columbine (Aquilegia). The latter of course self-seeds freely in many gardens but it does not come true to type: if you want to keep the same colour form you will have to grow from named seed.

Water any edible crops in grow bags and containers once daily preferably in the early morning. If you have potatoes in containers don’t over-water as this may compact the soil and prevent tubers from swelling. Feed weekly.

Oriental Poppies (Papaver) are Summer dormant. Once they have flowered they quickly look tired and die back. It is worth planting round them to mask this. Cosmos are an excellent long-flowering annual that will do the job and are my choice for Bee Plant of the Month. Penstemons are another option and should be hardy in a warm garden. Hardy Geraniums can be cut back hard after flowering, and will produce a second HUGE SELECTION OF SHRUBS, BEDDING, HERBACEOUS PLANTS AND HERBS flush of flowers in around five weeks. Geranium LARGE VARIETY OF SEEDS, BULBS, COMPOST, LAWN CARE phaeum is one of the few that will thrive in shade OUTDOOR FURNITURE, HOUSE PLANTS, and is a very useful plant for a dark corner. GIFTWARE AND CARDS Plants that should be looking good on the nursery and available to plant now include: Scabious, Centaurea, Bellflowers (Campanula), Erigeron, Bearded Iris and Alstroemeria. Now is a good time to discover how bee-friendly your garden is and learn how to improve it with planting recommendations tailored to your garden’s growing conditions. This is easy and fun to do using The Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s “Bee Kind” tool available on their website bumblebeeconservation.org
