From the Editor Hi Readers! This is really hard to believe but it has been 9 years since the very first Swanwick edition hit the doorsteps of 2500 homes! I can remember it like yesterday and I cringe horribly when I look back on that first edition! I delivered them all myself and I remember putting them through letterboxes nervously and was praying that nobody would come out and shout at me and I truly hoped at least some people would like it (or at least appreciate what I was trying to do!!). Well, we’re still here, so I’d like to think that at least some of you did and I thank you endlessly for that and your continued support throughout the years. Without you reading it and supporting our fabulous advertisers, there would be no magazine, so thank you from the bottom of all our hearts. There have been some ups and downs, growing pains, staff changes and some serious quantity increases since the beginning and I lose count of how many businesses we’ve helped and community groups we’ve assisted to publicise events. I won’t ever lose sight of the reason I started this little magazine – to give those starting out, struggling or not for profit organisations without excess money, the chance to reach out to an audience that was only ever open to the people with disposable income. It always seemed bizarre to me that somebody with the guts and aspirations to start a business without help,
needed to be established to be able to afford to advertise and market their business….. which you couldn’t become established unless you got your message out…..which you couldn’t do as all your money is zapped by starting a business! Crazy! Anyway, I truly hoped we’ve helped to spread the love, community news and fun factor over the years and long may it continue!! On that note, I’d like to mention Bonfire night and the time of year that involves the big fella dressed in red! I know it is super early but give a thought to us poor magazine producers who are still in the throes of summer (no kids are back at school yet) whilst simultaneously working on the October (Bonfire) and Christmas editions! We are regularly #confused in relation to what month it is!!! So, if you are planning any events or you want to start publicising events for the festive period……DON’T DELAY and get in touch now so that we can help you with your promotions! Happy Reading!
Emily x

endorsement. Although we have been trading for over 150 years, it is still rewarding to receive recognition for our on-going efforts. It is also further reassurance to our evergrowing band of loyal customers that we are still attaining the same level of excellence.”
100% customer satisfaction is unassailable and that is exactly what T Nutt & Sons achieved in this survey. “It is very difficult to beat 100%,” was the comment from Michael Hardiman, Chief Executive of The Carpet Foundation at the time.
The vetting process for the award is exhaustive and entails a visit from a professionally-qualified assessor, who undertakes a thorough scrutiny of the business and its methods, ethics and procedures. This involves a credit check and randomised customer reference checks, as well as an examination of the administrative processes, documentation and complaints procedures.
n 2011, an independent survey was carried out by The Carpet Foundation on customers of T Nutt & Sons. These customers were chosen at random. The responses spoke volumes about the highest levels of service and craftsmanship offered by this 150-year old company.
The purchase experience was scrutinised using six different criteria, including attitude of staff, professionalism, commitments met, invoices matching quote, handling of carpet installation and quality of advice. The results showed outstanding performance, and all the customers said that they were likely to buy from the company again. With 80% of T Nutt & Son’s business coming from the residential market place and 20% from contract, most orders come from customer recommendation. As members of the Carpet Foundation, David believes that this gives the company a cutting edge over its competitors. He describes the Carpet Foundation as “the best thing that has happened in the industry in the past 20 years.” T Nutt & Sons has also been granted Which? Trusted Trader status. The Which? Trusted Trader scheme only awards this certification to the very best businesses, who maintain the highest professional standards. Director Keven Nutt said, “We are extremely proud of being Which? Trusted Traders. The award means that our business has been vetted rigorously and gained full

T Nutt & Sons also gained glowing accolades in the Family Business Awards in 2011 and 2013. In 2011 the company was crowned runner-up in the Best Small Family Business category of the Midlands Family Business awards. Judges recognised and praised the business for its “outstanding service to all customers” In addition plaudits were bestowed on the firm for its “loyalty to customers”. In receiving the award, David Nutt said, “We consider every customer as part of our family. And family unity reaps success, always. We are regularly assured of our excellent service by our customers. But to be recognised by an independent panel of judges, means so much to us. We believe that is the goodwill of our customers that has enabled us to win this award and we dedicate this award to them. We pledge to continue to serve our ‘family’ customers with sincerity, loyalty and tremendous pride.” In 2013 T Nutt & Sons was ‘Highly Commended for Retail Excellence’ at the same Family Business Awards ceremony Top: Proud moment for David (centre) and Keven Nutt with Sue Carr of award sponsor V Formation having been awarded Runnerup in the ‘Best Small Business’ category of the Midlands Family Business Awards.

Slimming World Recipe Spaghetti bolognese I couldn’t believe it when I realised that we haven’t featured the Slimming World Spaghetti Bolognese before. It’s such a classic and this recipe only has 1 syn per serving! If you’re not a fan of butternut squash why not try courgetti spaghetti or whatever pasta you prefer! Serves: 4 Ready in: 55 minutes Syns per serving: 1
Method:
Ingredients:
1. Put the beef in a deep non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes or until browned, breaking up any lumps with spoon. Drain off any fat and add the onion, garlic and 2 tbsp water. Cover and cook for 10 minutes or until the onion is soft, stirring occasionally.
• 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 400g jar sweet peppers (such as Peppadew), drained and roughly chopped • 3 x 300g packs butternut squash noodles (or see tip) • Chopped fresh parsley, to serve • 4 level tbsp freshly grated Parmesan, to serve
2. Add the chopped tomatoes and peppers to the pan, reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. 3. When the sauce is nearly ready, put the squash noodles and 100ml boiling water in a non-stick saucepan over a medium-high heat and cook for 5 minutes or until piping hot and tender. Drain, divide between bowls and top with the sauce. Scatter over the parsley and serve with the Parmesan to sprinkle over (1 level tbsp per serving).

Book Review
Felley Furnishings
Middle England by Jonathon Coe
Jonathon Coe’s novel, Middle England, is what you might call a state of the nation tale. It’s like a snapshot of the events of the past ten or so years in this country through the lives and experiences of a group of friends and families.
Chairs • Recliners • Sofas • Beds
Needless to say, this has not been just any old decade. We’ve had the financial and human consequences of the 2008 crash, then the 2012 Olympics with that brilliant Danny Boyle opening ceremony which gave us a very upbeat idea of ourselves as a country, whether it was the celebration of the NHS, or the fun of the Queen and James Bond parachuting into the Olympic Arena
All this sounds very serious, and while it’s undoubtedly thoughtful, it’s not grim and has some very funny moments. And at a time when there’s not a lot about, it reminds us of the virtues of moderation.

So quite a bit to work with then. Jonathan Coe has obviously recognised that we’re going through a period of immense change. There’s a lot of sympathy for different standpoints and human foibles though

UNDERSTANDING YOUR LITTLE ONES Understanding what babies and toddlers are often so desperate, but unable, to communicate to us is a common frustration. But TinyTalk Baby Signing and Toddler Talking can help ease these frustrations by giving you and your baby the skills to be able to communicate before they can verbally speak. Communication and language is encouraged through fun, interactive sessions with signing songs, sensory activities and a good shake of the musical instruments. Parents are an essential part of the process, needing to learn the signs, taken from British Sign Language, along with their children, and enjoy the bonus of making new friends in the process. The Toddler talking classes follow on from around 18 months to support their developing verbal communication and is much more active for those

Back to School DERBYSHIRE
COME & VISIT OUR NEW SHOP IN SOMERCOTES DERBYSHIRE
For this month’s article we asked around to find out what concerns children have about going back to school. Here are the top 3 concerns and some tips with how to deal with them. I’m worried about starting a new school and making new friends You may have seen your child make friends so many times by now and you may believe they’re a natural at it. However, to our children the thought of starting somewhere new and making friends again can be a really daunting thought. A tool we regularly use in NLP therapy is a timeline - a list of events in chronological order. For example you’ll have a timeline of memories of events from the day you were born to today and you’re timeline will stretch out way in front of you containing your hopes, dreams and goals. You can help your child use their timeline to their advantage by encouraging them remember things in their past that were new at the time and they now do without thinking. It could be places they’ve been (nursery, primary school or a club), experiences they’ve had (going to a water park or on a plane), or it could be simple tasks they’ve mastered (walking, counting, feeding themselves). Use this opportunity to make this a fun reminder of how different their life would be if they hadn’t experienced these new events. I’m going to get more homework and it keeps getting harder Have you noticed how much babies love to experiment? They’re happy to sit for significant periods of time working things out. They see no pressure in needing to get things right, they’re simply happy to play around until they get the hang of something.
here too. You may want to use ‘homework’ time to get your admin tasks done or learn a new skill, giving your child the opportunity to see how you handle dealing with more challenging tasks. What if people notice me/ What if I’m different to everyone else? Human beings are natural similarity seekers. When we first meet someone, we’re unconsciously looking, listening and noticing things that are similar to us and then we use them to build rapport and connect. If we only focus on similarities however then we start to believe people are only being friends with us because of our sameness or our family members only love us because we have the same traits as them. This can become damaging when we don’t have the confidence to be our true selves and understand that people around us will love and accept us for everything we are, same or different. Help your child feel proud of who they are by encouraging them to understand themselves, their likes, dislikes, goals and achievements. Talk about how these compare with each member of the family and their friends and show them how to accept, love and understand diversity.
Help your child to switch their focus by reminding them of the fun of learning. Give praise and feedback on how they’ve approached a task, or the time they’ve spent on it rather than just praising the end result. Modelling (showing your child how it’s done) can also work well
For more tips and information on events Debbie will be running in September, follow her on facebook.com/ NLP4KidsDerbyshire/

The new school term can be a tricky time for all involved, remember, tricky times don’t last, this is just another event on your timeline. Have a great September
Unfortunately, at some point in our life, possibly when we face targets and tests, we stop this willingness to spend time ‘playing’ and experimenting. Instead we become focussed on an end goal and getting something right.
If you feel your child could benefit from a confidence boost before they return to school then call Debbie on 07747 090871 to book a free consultation.

Rambles with RafFa lake
We’re back to following one of fantastic walks from David of JH Legal again this month. I love these walks as the descriptions are so detailed and easy to follow and David always does such a great job finding these routes that are just perfect for us and our four-legged friends.
5. Now continue uphill with a hedge on your left and after a short distance bear right away from the hedge to cross an open field. At the far side pass through a gap and continue with a hedge on your left. When the hedge on the left ends keep ahead to cross an open field.

We begin the walk in Renishaw making use of the car park on the Trans Pennine Trail. The Trail is a fantastic resource which stretches across the country, with a significant stretch in our local area. There is more available on the Derbyshire.gov.uk website. We head north via a circuitous route which allows us to see a little of the countryside and taking us as far up as Killamarsh before looping back and heading south down the trail to where we began.
6. At the far side continue onto a lane. Follow the lane around to the left and then uphill. At the top of the hill ignore a path on the right and continue straight ahead to follow a sign for ‘Trans Pennine Way N’. After a short distance pass through a gap and onto a tarmac lane.
4-mile circular walk from Renishaw via the Trans Pennine Trail A gentle walk which should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. There is one road to cross so please take care however most of the walk is on paths and trails. Please wear appropriate footwear and always follow the countryside code.
7. Turn left, cross a bridge and then in a short distance turn right onto a footpath signposted for ‘Trans

1. With your back to the car park entrance, walk straight ahead to pass by a large metal gate to a finger board sign. Turn right to ‘Chesterfield’. Follow the path going uphill, then just prior to going under a bridge, turn left along a footpath, with houses over to your right.
3. After some distance pass through a gap and down a slope onto a trail. Passing a bench seat on your left cross straight over the trail, pass through a gap and bear around to the right along a footpath. After a short distance the path joins with a lane going uphill for a short distance and then turn right onto a path marked for ‘Westhorpe Hills’.

4. After a very short distance cross a footbridge and keep ahead going gently uphill. After a short distance turn left onto a lane marked by an arrow on a marker post over to your right. At the bottom and before reaching a metal width restrictor, turn right, to cross a stile onto a footpath marked ‘Cuckoo Way’. 8. Continue along the footpath with ponds on your right. Pass over a crossroads of paths and keep ahead with the ponds on your right for some distance. When the ponds end continue with a fence on your right. 9. When the fence ends the path gives way to a lane. Continue for a short distance, then just prior to reaching an incline in the lane look for 2 paths on the left. Ignore the 1st path going steep downhill and take the 2nd path which bears to the left but stays at the same level. 10. Walk along this path with a bank on your right and the odd glimpse of the Pennine Trail running parallel down to your left. After some distance pass a large metal gate on your left. and shortly you will come to a road. Follow a sign for ‘Trans Pennine Way’ going downhill along the road. 11. After a short distance turn left onto a footpath signposted for ‘Killamarsh Greenway’ and Trans Pennine Way’. Pass through a metal width restrictor, cross over a bridge and then immediately after the bridge turn left onto a lane. After a short distance bear left off the lane to continue downhill along a footpath. 12. At the bottom of the hill pass a width restrictor on your left and continue straight ahead to join the Pennine Trail heading in the direction signposted for ‘Chesterfield’. Continue along the trail for approximately 2 miles until reaching the car park and starting point.
This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Mike’us sings M
I read recently that a good moan is good for your health. So, I think George will be feeling a lot better right now. I have to say I agree with a lot of what he has to say… and as a dog owner I have to say I hate it when people don’t pick up their poo – Nobody likes to do it and a cork is too cruel
George gets angry
Over the years many of you have got to know George through meeting him as he goes about his business in the neighbourhood, or via his observations in your monthly copy of Voice Magazine. Whether or not you’ve met him personally and ‘chewed his ear’ on whatever topic concerns you, no-one can argue that he is one of the good guys who simply wants to do his bit to make life better for everyone. After all, that is why the Union of Clever & Intelligent People – UCIP to you and me! - appointed him People’s Champion’. Placid by nature he may be, but even George has a breaking point and you are advised not to read any further if you are in any way lazy, selfish, inconsiderate or simply just anti-social. In recent weeks, George has had occasion to visit friends at both Chesterfield Royal and King’s Mill Hospitals. Thankfully, both are on the road to full recovery but, as he left, George nearly had a seizure and joined them inside. He coughed and spluttered as he passed through a foul smelling hazy cloud just outside the main entrance. Here were people, some of whom were actually in-patients with various tubes attached to them, having a smoke. This despite signs everywhere pointing out that this was a nonsmoking site. What compels people to drop litter or, in some cases, deliberately throw rubbish from their car windows? In George’s village, a few weeks ago, a number of community spirited volunteers gave up a couple of hours of their time to remove litter from the streets and hedgerows. Whilst it
might be stretching the point to say that the area was so clean you could have eaten your dinner off the pavement, they did an excellent job. Sadly, within a week, the area was littered with amongst other things, discarded McDonald’s food & drink containers, cigarette packets (and fag ends), sweet wrappers and any number of empty cans/bottles. This just made George so boiling mad that, never mind the pavement, you could have fried an egg on his forehead. What might just push George ‘over the edge’ however, is those who fail to clean up after their dog. There are numerous signs across the area telling prospective offenders that if they ‘don’t pick up they will pay up’. Now George accepts that most (if not all) dogs are illiterate and probably don’t understand. However, as for their owners.................? To the best of his knowledge, George does not think that any of the ‘culprits’ are visually impaired so he has to conclude that in every case they are either lazy, selfish, inconsiderate or anti-social and, in all probability, each of these. However, he cannot campaign on his own and, recognising that it’s not easy, would like each of you to shame and embarrass any perpetrators of such anti-social behaviour that you come across. Next month, George will tell a few tales – some of which will make you smile - following his recent coach trip to Scotland.

It’s been an odd summer. Periods of intense heat, followed by torrential monsoon-like downpours. And whilst there is still loads going on in the garden with the later flowerers coming into their own and pots and baskets continuing till the first frosts, (so long as we remember to deadhead) it’s also a good time to think about the coming seasons whatever they throw at us. Congested perennials can be divided now while you can properly see their footprint on the garden and where there might be some gaps which need filling. Division keeps the plants healthy and of course gives you more flowers next year. You can do this every two to three years with plants such as crocosmia, delphiniums, blue geraniums, iris, hostas and anemone.
r
Lift with a fork and split either with back-to-back forks in the case of hostas with tough roots or in clumps of five or so shoots with plants like crocosmia. Replant in your chosen spot with a bit of garden compost to feed and keep well-watered. Bare root wallflowers can go in now for spring flowering and primulas and pansies and violas at the end of the month and it’s also time to think about planting daffs (now) and tulips (up till end of November).

TOP TIP!
You can still sow salad rocket now and expect to be harvesting well towards winter and early next spring. There should be fewer slugs around to munch the tender shoots and rocket doesn’t mind a bit of cold.

From a football perspective first and foremost, you have to say it’s a fine move for the Rams and an interesting one for Rooney himself. Signing a player of his caliber, a former England captain and record goalscorer is quite a coup for a second division team which haven’t played in the Premier League for more than a decade. And let’s be right, it’s a great signing for the Championship, Derby County and also the area. Anything that brings added focus and interest in this region can only be a good thing in my book and you have to tip your hat to Derby for having the audacity and ability to pull it off. Now, onto the rather thorny issue of the ethics. Rooney’s move is in part being funded by Derby’s club sponsor, a betting firm which in truth, creates its own discussion and there will be plenty who have an opinion and sit on both sides of the debate. A side issue is that a rather inventive way of bypassing Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations has been to give him a player/coach contract, which means under the Football League’s (EFL) FFP guidelines, only half of his salary has to be included in such calculations. As we saw last season with the selling of Pride Park Stadium and leasing it back to
him, owner Mel Morris is nothing if not smart, much to the annoyance of Steve Gibson at Middlesbrough. The ethics of the move remain debatable. Should a gambling firm be having such an impact that they pay half of a players reported £80,000 per week salary, whilst giving him the shirt number which forms part of their name? Problems with youngsters gambling on football are growing – an area to worry about for sure. Football is awash with money, we know that, and the game rarely takes too much of an interest in where the money comes from, as long as it comes and keeps on coming. Gambling is a big problem in the sport with half of all Premier League teams this season being sponsored by one, while Derby’s archrivals Nottingham Forest have been recently and are again this term sporting the name of a gambling company. The EFL are on a sticky wicket, though, and them stepping in is unlikely. After all, their competition’s title sponsor is a betting firm, while the FA were forced to drop Ladbrokes as one of their partners, you can see their dilemma. In reality, few will care if Rooney, number 32 on his back, arrives from Washington in January and plays a part in Derby winning promotion to the Premier League, but the wider concern has to be the sheer level of sway betting firms have on the game in this country.

There’s been an awful lot written and probably a whole lot more said about Wayne Rooney’s move to Championship club Derby County.

Wayne Rooney is back in the UK… at Derby County. I don’t think many people saw that coming! But with a gambling company playing a key role in the signing is there an ethical question over this transfer? Here’s our Barry’s take on it…
