endorsement. Although we have been trading for over 150 years, it is still rewarding to receive recognition for our on-going efforts. It is also further reassurance to our evergrowing band of loyal customers that we are still attaining the same level of excellence.”
100% customer satisfaction is unassailable and that is exactly what T Nutt & Sons achieved in this survey. “It is very difficult to beat 100%,” was the comment from Michael Hardiman, Chief Executive of The Carpet Foundation at the time.
The vetting process for the award is exhaustive and entails a visit from a professionally-qualified assessor, who undertakes a thorough scrutiny of the business and its methods, ethics and procedures. This involves a credit check and randomised customer reference checks, as well as an examination of the administrative processes, documentation and complaints procedures.
n 2011, an independent survey was carried out by The Carpet Foundation on customers of T Nutt & Sons. These customers were chosen at random. The responses spoke volumes about the highest levels of service and craftsmanship offered by this 150-year old company.
The purchase experience was scrutinised using six different criteria, including attitude of staff, professionalism, commitments met, invoices matching quote, handling of carpet installation and quality of advice. The results showed outstanding performance, and all the customers said that they were likely to buy from the company again. With 80% of T Nutt & Son’s business coming from the residential market place and 20% from contract, most orders come from customer recommendation. As members of the Carpet Foundation, David believes that this gives the company a cutting edge over its competitors. He describes the Carpet Foundation as “the best thing that has happened in the industry in the past 20 years.” T Nutt & Sons has also been granted Which? Trusted Trader status. The Which? Trusted Trader scheme only awards this certification to the very best businesses, who maintain the highest professional standards. Director Keven Nutt said, “We are extremely proud of being Which? Trusted Traders. The award means that our business has been vetted rigorously and gained full

T Nutt & Sons also gained glowing accolades in the Family Business Awards in 2011 and 2013. In 2011 the company was crowned runner-up in the Best Small Family Business category of the Midlands Family Business awards. Judges recognised and praised the business for its “outstanding service to all customers” In addition plaudits were bestowed on the firm for its “loyalty to customers”. In receiving the award, David Nutt said, “We consider every customer as part of our family. And family unity reaps success, always. We are regularly assured of our excellent service by our customers. But to be recognised by an independent panel of judges, means so much to us. We believe that is the goodwill of our customers that has enabled us to win this award and we dedicate this award to them. We pledge to continue to serve our ‘family’ customers with sincerity, loyalty and tremendous pride.” In 2013 T Nutt & Sons was ‘Highly Commended for Retail Excellence’ at the same Family Business Awards ceremony Top: Proud moment for David (centre) and Keven Nutt with Sue Carr of award sponsor V Formation having been awarded Runnerup in the ‘Best Small Business’ category of the Midlands Family Business Awards.

Slimming World Recipe Spaghetti bolognese I couldn’t believe it when I realised that we haven’t featured the Slimming World Spaghetti Bolognese before. It’s such a classic and this recipe only has 1 syn per serving! If you’re not a fan of butternut squash why not try courgetti spaghetti or whatever pasta you prefer! Serves: 4 Ready in: 55 minutes Syns per serving: 1
Method:
Ingredients:
1. Put the beef in a deep non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes or until browned, breaking up any lumps with spoon. Drain off any fat and add the onion, garlic and 2 tbsp water. Cover and cook for 10 minutes or until the onion is soft, stirring occasionally.
• 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 400g jar sweet peppers (such as Peppadew), drained and roughly chopped • 3 x 300g packs butternut squash noodles (or see tip) • Chopped fresh parsley, to serve • 4 level tbsp freshly grated Parmesan, to serve
2. Add the chopped tomatoes and peppers to the pan, reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. 3. When the sauce is nearly ready, put the squash noodles and 100ml boiling water in a non-stick saucepan over a medium-high heat and cook for 5 minutes or until piping hot and tender. Drain, divide between bowls and top with the sauce. Scatter over the parsley and serve with the Parmesan to sprinkle over (1 level tbsp per serving).

Book Review
Middle England by Jonathon Coe
Jonathon Coe’s novel, Middle England, is what you might call a state of the nation tale. It’s like a snapshot of the events of the past ten or so years in this country through the lives and experiences of a group of friends and families. Needless to say, this has not been just any old decade. We’ve had the financial and human consequences of the 2008 crash, then the 2012 Olympics with that brilliant Danny Boyle opening ceremony which gave us a very upbeat idea of ourselves as a country, whether it was the celebration of the NHS, or the fun of the Queen and James Bond parachuting into the Olympic Arena And then there’s been the political upheavals, not least of which has been Brexit and its nation changing dramas. So quite a bit to work with then. Jonathan Coe has obviously recognised that we’re going through a period of immense change. There’s a lot of sympathy for different standpoints and human foibles though But it also reflects what might be seen as a national crisis of identity. What is it that binds us? And is it enough? All this sounds very serious, and while it’s undoubtedly thoughtful, it’s not grim and has some very funny moments. And at a time when there’s not a lot about, it reminds us of the virtues of moderation.

Hope Valley Business Zoo Business Networking @HNBZ Networking
Do’s and Don’ts
Business owners may avoid networking for several reasons. Rigid, ‘must always bring referrals and never miss a session’ kind of events seem like hard work.
Do spend some time working on ‘your pitch’, usually 30-60 seconds is required.
Large yearly membership fees plus additional weekly meeting payments quickly add up and, if you’re just starting, out these can seem like just another unjustifiable expense. However, networking has changed yes, the ‘old style’ membership ones still exist but there are plenty of pay as you attend groups around and everyone who runs their own business should factor in attending meetings on a regular basis.
Do ensure that you mention exactly what you are looking for – e.g. the type of business or client you would like to meet. Do attend meetings regularly, dipping in and out won’t help you build relationships. Do refer business to people you network with – reciprocity is the name of the game! Do follow up with people – networking is not just about handing out business cards. Don’t launch straight into a sales pitch. Don’t expect results (i.e. sales) immediately, it could take several months Don’t speak to only one person or group – ensure you talk to as many other attendees as possible. Don’t GIVE UP

Ancient Ancestors in Derbyshire We are delighted to introduce a brand new series of articles focusing on the inhabitants of Derbyshire from 200,000 years ago to the present day. Looking at how the area and people influenced each other over time. Derbyshire is a wonderful county to live in – from the rocky beauty of the High Peaks to the rolling hills of the Dales, the wonders of nature surround us. Have you ever wondered though just how long we humans have lived in this part of the world? It may be longer than you think! Way back - some two hundred thousand years ago in fact – it appears that a few of our intrepid antecedents ventured as far north as Hopton, near Carsington. That is if the evidence of a stone hand axe is anything to go by. 200,000 years ago most of Britain and Europe was in the midst of an ‘ice age’ which had already lasted some 150,000 years. But, at around that time, the climate warmed enough to create what is known as an ‘interglacial period’ and parts of the UK, which had until then been covered in sheets of ice up to two miles thick, became more accessible. This warming allowed early humans to venture into hitherto uninhabitable areas – like Derbyshire. The interglacial period didn’t last long however and by 150,000 years ago the area was back under the ice cap. The next evidence of people in this area dates to around 60,000 to 40,000 years ago – at Creswell Craggs on the Derbyshire/ Nottingham border. Not people like you and I, but rather our close cousins the Neanderthals whose stone tools have been discovered in the caves. The caves at Creswell seem to have been in pretty much continuous use by early nomadic humans (homo sapiens and Neanderthals) as a seasonal resting place whilst they hunted and foraged. Many different
kinds of animal bones have been discovered, including hyena’s and hippopotamus. Today we are probably more aware of Creswell Crags as the site of the most northerly Prehistoric cave art thus discovered; dating back between 13,000 and 15,000 years. Until these works were found, it had been assumed that the climate this far north in Britain at that time was entirely too inclement for our ancestors to want to create art. The carvings may not be as dramatic as the cave paintings of France and Spain but they do underline what seems to be a common human trait…the desire to create imagery. The art includes images of bison, reindeer and birds as well as abstract symbols… prehistoric doodles perhaps? Carved pieces of bone have also been found in the caves. About 12,000 years ago warmer temperatures saw the start of a continuous occupation of the country by people just like us. They were hunter gatherers who travelled around rather than having one permanent base. 10,000 years ago the climate had warmed to such an extent that Britain, which during the preceding ice ages had actually been connected to both Europe and Scandinavia, became an island. Next month, we’ll be taking a look at some of the sites around Derbyshire that show evidence of human occupation 12,000 to 3,000 years ago – including the proliferation of stone circles in the area. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. To find out more visit www.landgassociates.co.uk or contact Laura on 07736 351341

Gardener’s Calendar
It’s been an odd summer. Periods of intense heat, followed by torrential monsoon-like downpours. And whilst there is still loads going on in the garden with the later flowerers coming into their own and pots and baskets continuing till the first frosts, (so long as we remember to deadhead) it’s also a good time to think about the coming seasons whatever they throw at us. Congested perennials can be divided now while you can properly see their footprint on the garden and where there might be some gaps which need filling. Division keeps the plants healthy and of course gives you more flowers next year. You can do this every two to three years with plants such as crocosmia, delphiniums, blue geraniums, iris, hostas and anemone.
r
Lift with a fork and split either with back-to-back forks in the case of hostas with tough roots or in clumps of five or so shoots with plants like crocosmia. Replant in your chosen spot with a bit of garden compost to feed and keep well-watered. Bare root wallflowers can go in now for spring flowering and primulas and pansies and violas at the end of the month and it’s also time to think about planting daffs (now) and tulips (up till end of November).

Prune your fruit trees after fruiting to encourage next year’s growth.
TOP TIP!
You can still sow salad rocket now and expect to be harvesting well towards winter and early next spring. There should be fewer slugs around to munch the tender shoots and rocket doesn’t mind a bit of cold. 06/11/2018 18:16

Peak viewing for the lizards I was walking a busy moorland footpath when the summer tourism throng halted to view, this very bold common lizard. The lizard was sunning itself in the middle of a major footpath and was a particularly stunning and very green individual. I suspect it may have done this before, and to its cost, since if you look carefully it has a part re-grown tail which suggests a close call with a predator. In a fully intact lizard, the tail is generally about twice the length of the body; which this one certainly is not. The Peak moorlands and bogs area especially, are home to thriving populations of common lizards and these can be predated by, for instance, Kestrels. Less well-known as a lizard-predator, is the ‘upland blackbird’, the Ring Ouzel. Local wildlife photographer Kirsty Swinburn, snapped this individual catching Common Lizard on the edge of the high Derwent Moors. The moorland haunts of the Ring Ouzel don’t have many earthworms – a favourite food of the lowland Blackbird – but lizards are plentiful. For the lizards the presence of Ouzels means another predator to watch out for and avoid, or in the case of this individual, not! Clearly this little chap has had a close call at some point in the recent past but its trick of ‘tail-shedding’ was enough to save it to bask another

day. This is a rather clever trick as Common Lizards caught by the tail by a would-be predator; simply snap it off at a joint near the base. This leaves the captor holding just the tail and that continues to wriggle even when detached from the animal. If it lives sufficiently long, the lizard will grow a new tail but one that is shorter and thicker than the original; just like the one in the picture. This species is also called the ‘viviparous’ lizard because in northern climates like Britain, it gives birth to live young with eggs hatching inside the female’s body. Other pictures show the Common Lizards on bare, open footpaths and one from some years back that actually walked up my arm! However if you spot a lizard, whatever you do, don’t pick it up by the tail or the result will be disappointing for you and bad for the lizard!
