TRUST US TO REPLACE YOUR BOILER
From the Editor Hi Readers,
Judy
Lee
Welcome to the penultimate edition of 2019! I’m not really sure where this year has gone and I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that! It seems to have passed through in the blink of an eye even with all the shenanigans going on in the country – which shall not be spoken of as I think we’re all sick of hearing about the B word!
Rebecca
We’ve brought you some great community articles this month which I hope you enjoy. We have always aimed to try and bring you more of this as we’ve grown and as always, our fabulous readers and advertisers have come up trumps and sent us some great information, please keep it coming, we will always try and publish it.

Don’t forget 203414 to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads
Speaking of fabulous readers and advertisers, our Danielle (and the rest of the team sporadically) had a wonderful time last month at Party in the Park, Alfreton. We were raising money for Alfreton Rotary to enable them to give more money to local charities and we raised £200 via our raffle. Of course, not a penny of that would have happened without you coming down to see us and buying a ticket and our fabulous advertisers sending in amazing prizes… and some of them were absolutely awesome! So, a big thank you from the team, we really appreciate your support and your wonderful
feedback and we look forward to seeing more of you in the future. Oooh, I nearly forgot, we’ve also brought you the NEC competition again this year, which is always a must go if you are a Christmas loving person (I love going, but be warned…. it does get busy and you won’t like it if you don’t like crowds!) and as I type, I think our fabulous sales team have just secured some Panto tickets that you can win in next month’s edition! See you next month (delivery will be the middle of November) for our bumper Christmas edition, so don’t forget… if you want to be in our Christmas magazine, we need the info by the 25th October. Happy Reading!

Book Review
The Other End of the Line by Andrea Camilleri
If you’ve seen any of the Inspector Montalbano series on TV you’ll be familiar with the grumpy Sicilian detective and the wit and brio (and food!) of his world. But you may not know that Montalbano’s creator was Andrea Camilleri whose two dozen plus novels have sold 30 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 32 languages. The latest, The Other End of the Line, has just been published, two months after his death at the age of 93. As with all Camilleri’s books the “case” is only part of the story. Always his passion for life and social justice and the people and island of Sicily shines through. In this tale the detective tries to unravel the murder of the dressmaker at the local tailor. She is a woman he found himself charmed by when, to his dismay, he had been sent by his girlfriend to get a “proper” suit for a wedding. But at the same time, Montalbano’s coastal town of Vigata faces a swell of refugees arriving nightly by boat in search of a better life. The whole town is trying to help the migrants while exhausted police try to track down the people smugglers who are getting rich on other people’s misery. Camilleri describes the situation, almost on our doorstep, with humanity and lucidity. His fans will be pleased to know that is not quite the last book. At least one more is still to be published.

Slimming World Recipe Toad In The Hole The range of food available on the Slimming World Plan is astonishing! Toad in the Hole is one of my favourites. Why not try it with green beans, mashed potato and SW Onion Gravy? - Yum Yum! Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 Hour Syns per serving: 3
Method: 1. Preheat your oven to 220°C/fan 200°C/gas 7. Spread the sausages in a large, non-stick roasting tin in a single layer. Spray with low-calorie cooking spray and cook for 10 minutes. 2. Turn over the sausages, then scatter the onion rings over the top. Spray lightly with a little more low-calorie cooking spray and return to the oven for a further 15 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, sieve the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl or a large jug. Use a hand whisk to mix in the milk very gradually, followed by 75ml water to make a smooth, lump-free batter. 4. Whisk in the eggs, one at a time, until the batter is well combined (it should be a smooth, pourable consistency). Stir in the rosemary and sage, and season. 5. When the sausages are cooked, remove the tin from the oven and quickly pour the batter around them. Return the tin to the oven. Reduce the oven temperature to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6 and bake for 25 minutes, or until the batter is puffed up and golden.
Ingredients: • 12 frozen Slimming World Synfree Pork Sausages • Low-calorie cooking spray • 1 large onion, sliced into rings • 60g plain flour • 2 level tsp baking powder • 100ml skimmed milk • 5 large eggs • 2 fresh rosemary sprigs, leaves roughly chopped • 2 tsp dried sage

READER RECOMMENDS SEVERAL OF OUR ADVERTISERS Over the years that we have been up and running, we always pride ourselves on trying to bring you the best local advertisers we can find and we always say “don’t just take our word for it….”. Since the very early days, we’ve had lots of readers phone and write in to tell us about what a fabulous job our advertisers have done and we want you to keep doing that to help them to grow their businesses. After all, if someone is doing a great job, why keep it a secret!? This month, we’ve had an email from Mr & Mrs Hill who have moved from Riddings to Selston and this is what they had to say….. “Dear Voice Magazines / Emily and Team We recently moved house from Riddings to Selston and took our latest Voice magazine with us! It has been invaluable. We needed the oven cleaning desperately so contacted Name Violet at OvenCharm and she was able to come the following day. We were without TV for 3 weeks and Lee at College Aerials was able to come and sort this for us. And we also contacted Grant at Premier Blinds to organise some black out blinds for the bedrooms, and because we were ordering so many, he was able to give us a discount. My husband and I have never used any of these local companies before, and were really pleased with all of them, their prompt service, and would definitely recommend to others. Mr and Mrs Hill “

We have a special badge on our front cover this month, to support Baby Loss Awareness Week. As many people know, the death of a baby is not a rare event and can affect many people. Baby Loss Awareness Week aims to act as a point of remembrance for bereaved parents, families and friends to unite across the world to commemorate their babies’ lives. At the same time, it is an opportunity to raise awareness about pregnancy and baby loss in the UK and to drive improvements in bereavement care and support for those affected. Baby Loss Awareness Week is also a collaboration of charities and organisations working together. One of these organisations is Nottingham Sands, a branch of the national Sands charity.

Nottingham Sands are a group of bereaved parents who volunteer their time. They have links to Kings Mill plus City and QMC hospital and work closely with the bereavement midwives to support those who have suffered the loss of a baby at any stage. Nottingham Sands have launched the ‘I’m the Face of Baby Loss’ campaign. This innovative approach involves bereaved families having photos produced and displayed to help break the taboo surrounding the devastating loss of a baby. These will be exhibited across the county from 9th to 15th October for Baby Loss Awareness Week. More information about Nottinghamshire Sands can be found on their Facebook page “Nottinghamshire Sands” or via email at nottingham.sands@hotmail.co.uk

Rambles with RafFa lake and
3-mile circular walk from Pinxton Wharf via Selston
A short but sweet walk from our resident ramble aficionado David of JH Legal. David has provided a little extra information in the description about two of the places we visit on this walk, Pinxton Wharf and St Helen’s Church. I think this local history really adds to the colour of the walk so a big thank you to David! We begin the walk at Pinxton Wharf. The Boat Inn is very close by and a good spot to stop in for some refreshment. It is dog friendly indoors and out. We walk along the canal for a short while before branching off across country towards Selston. We enter Selston briefly and walk past St Helen’s Church. Before heading back across country back towards Pinxton Wharf.
A gentle walk which should take you and your dog around 1½-2 hours to complete. There is a couple of quiet roads so please take care, however most of the walk is on paths and trails. Please wear appropriate footwear and, as always, follow the countryside code.
a gap in a fence along a marked footpath. The path leads to a farm track. Continue along the track to continue up and over a bridge. Shortly after the bridge and just prior to reaching a large metal gate directly in front of you, turn left to walk along a farm track going uphill. 4. At the top of the hill keep ahead into a open field, passing a yellow marker post on your left. Continue straight ahead over the brow of the hill and down the other side aiming for a small single tree in the hedge row on the far side of the field. Cross over a tiny stream and pass through the hedge to continue straight ahead for a short distance across another field. 5. At the far side pass through a gap into another field and now continue with the hedge on your right. Upon reaching a large metal gate on your right, ignore a marked path straight ahead and bear left to continue along the edge of the same field keeping the hedge on your right. At the far side of the field continue straight ahead along a narrow path with a fence on your left until reaching a stile. Cross the stile and continue along the edge of another field with a hedge on your right. 6. At the far side of this field cross another stile and then continue uphill to a road. Turn left along the road and after a short distance pass the church on your left. (Take a look at St Helens Church which holds the grave of Gypsy King Dan Boswell.[walk to the left hand side of the

church and it is a few feet from the door by a small holly tree] The grave stone faces the wrong way-it is not the original stone which was supposedly broken in two after being kicked by a cow. This dates back to when cows were kept in the churchyard . St Helens Church also contains the only 12thC incised stone in England. This is sited by the Chancel and is really worth viewing.) After passing the church continue along the road for some distance until reaching No.123. Turn left along a marked footpath adjacent to No.123 going downhill. After a short distance cross straight over a lane, pass through a gap and continue straight ahead across a field with a hedge on your left. 7. Continue to the far side of the field, pass through a gap and continue through a kissing gate. Now continue with a hedge on your left. After some distance follow the path over to the right to meet up with a kissing gate at the far side of the field. Pass through the gate and cross over a tarmac lane onto a marked footpath. Pass a farm and then a wind turbine on your left to continue straight ahead going downhill with a hedge on your left. 8. At the bottom of the field keep ahead along a narrow footpath going downhill. At the bottom cross over a railway line and then continue for a short distance to pass through a squeeze gate. Immediately after, turn left pass through another squeeze gate to continue along a footpath. Continue until reaching a road and the start of your walk.

After some distance cross over a small wooden footbridge and then a little further on pass over a larger wooden footbridge. Immediately after crossing the 2nd bridge turn right to continue along a footpath with a canal on your right.

Mike’us sings M
Having lost his rag last month, George has popped off to Scotland for a little respite. Perhaps he will find a new rag, maybe even in a nice Tartan print!
George has been on holiday
As you know, George has had quite a hard time of it this year, not enjoying the best of mental health. It’s been a direct result of him finding it difficult to deal with all the moaning and groaning from those who have looked upon him as being ‘the answer to their prayers’ in his role as UCIP’s People’s Champion. He continues to take his responsibilities seriously. However, listening intently every day to some of the outlandish suggestions his fellow citizens make to improve the lot of the common man/woman of this country, would make anyone, never mind our strongwilled George, question their sanity. After a visit to the surgery – it had been so long since he’d been he had to re-introduce himself to the GP! – the expert advice was that his general state of health was good but that a relaxing holiday would probably work wonders. Well, with the select few eligible to have a say on who the UK’s new Prime Minister was to be, having favoured Boris Johnson, he had concerns. He understood that there was now every likelihood that those who live in Scotland would probably secede – via a democratic referendum of course - from the Union. As a result, he decided to treat his wife to a few days in Scotland as he wanted to find out why it was that Scots were unlikely to warmly embrace the tousled haired blonde buffoon as their new PM.
telephone call, Hamish MacDonald kindly agreed to the pair of them travelling north to spend some time with him and his lovely wife, Morag. Setting off on Tuesday afternoon they crossed the Border around 8.00pm and had a pleasant overnight stop in Ecclefechan before carrying on and meeting up with Mr & Mrs MacDonald the following afternoon. After a couple of hours catching up on old times, Hamish suggested that they go over to the Drumnadrochit Hotel for a wee dram (or two!). What happened next will stay with George & his wife for the rest of their days! They had only just sat down with their drinks when a lady walked into the bar area with the Loch Ness Monster on a leash. The barman looked at the pair of them, and barely concealing his emotions, contemptuously announced, “Hey, ye cannae bring that ugly fat pig in here!” “Excuse me,” the lady indignantly responded, “but if you’d kindly put your glasses on, you would see that this is Nessie, the famous Loch Ness Monster.” “Ach, ah wisnae takin’ tae you, ye big fat brute,” replied the angry barman, “Ah wis talkin’ tae Nessie.” Next month, You can look forward to (?) another tale from George’s visit to Scotland
He had an old friend who lived in Drumnadrochit, near Inverness, that he’d not seen for a few years. After a

Gardener’s Calendar
Most gardeners will, despite the fact that there’s still plenty growing, be thinking about spring. So wallflowers violas and winter pansies can go now into the ground along with bulbs. Remember daffs, crocus and narcissus can be planted now but tulips left until well into November to avoid tulip fire. A handy rule of thumb for most bulbs is to plant pretty deep - two to three times their height.

There’s so many leaves dropping just now, it hardly seems worth the bother of raking them. However there are two good reasons to do this – if left to lie on grass they will get sludgy and damage your lawn, but also leaf mould is great mulch. Usually it can take up to a couple of years to get good leaf mould but you can speed things up by collecting and mowing before bagging. Broken down leaves decay much faster.

If you’ve been growing peas or beans this year the temptation is always to heave them out once they’ve finished producing. Just cut back to ground level instead – the roots are a great source of nitrogen which is great for renewing the soil.

Lilies can also be planted in containers now for next summer though it’s probably best to keep the pots in a cool frost-free place rather than outside if you anticipate frozen ground in your garden this winter. If you have heucheras and they’re starting to look a bit sad it’s a good time to lift and divide, get rid of any rot or decay and replant in small clumps. Perennials such as crocosmia or peonies which produce leaves and flower stems from underground, can be cut back to soil level. But leave stems around penstemons to protect the crown when they start growing again.

Unfortunately, like everything else, cricket is reliant on the finances delivered by satellite television and ticket sales, so while having an Ashes series just a couple of weeks after a home World Cup was far from ideal for the players, it was a necessity from the point of view of England and Wales’ Cricket Board’s bean counters. Once again, it delivered in spades. We can debate all day long the merits of the Ashes being played so close to a World Cup, but in truth, for England to come out of it unbeaten is a success in itself. I was at Headingley to see the team bowled out for 67 on that Friday afternoon, walking away into the sultry Leeds evening, believing the Test and Ashes were gone. The one man who didn’t was Ben Stokes and his heroic colleague, Jack Leach. Stokes’ innings to see England win that match was as good as it gets, it was memorable to say the least. Watching from Trent Bridge, who were playing Yorkshire in the Twenty20 competition, nobody amid the 16,000 cared what was happening out in the middle that day, we were all trying to follow the action from Leeds – the team had captivated a nation, again, just like in 2005. Yes, England may not have been able to win the little urn outright this summer and reclaim it from those pesky Aussies, but we’ve won a World Cup and drawn an Ashes series in the space of three months. That’s something to be proud of, those players are ones to herald, to be proud of and cricket has shown that we can all love it. What an absolute delight it’s been. Now, if we could just get more of it on terrestrial for the masses to see (and don’t get me started on the Hundred)...

To regular readers of this column, you’ll note that football tends to be the subject of choice. However, after a memorable few months of England’s major summer sport, it feels only fitting that this month’s waffle should be dedicated to cricket. What a few months it has been for the England team, Eoin Morgan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad et all. If you’re a cricket fan then it’s probably been one of the best in living memory, and if you’re not, there’s a fairly good chance that you’ve been captivated by the World Cup and then the Ashes. I know my good lady has become completely infatuated with it, as has one of my good friends – neither cared too much for cricket at the start of the summer – oh how they’re reformed characters now. Cricket’s a magnificent sport, one of the quintessential English games, played throughout the Commonwealth, with arguably its biggest rivalry being that between the two countries which contest the Ashes. And boy has it delivered. First up, it was that magnificent early July afternoon at Lord’s when Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer somehow led England to a first World Cup title in the One Day format of the game over New Zealand in the most dramatic of circumstances. That engaged a nation, it gave the whole country something to celebrate amid all the chaotic nonsense generated by those in Westminster and the whole Brexit shambles. Cricket is like no other sport, even football struggles to generate the pure, dramatic fluctuations - the games that operate within a game, how one wicket can change the course of an entire outcome. It’s unrivalled and I mean that with the greatest respects to others.
