Cancer touches us all. Most of us have either been directly affected or know someone who has been affected by the disease. This applies to the bands and performers presenting a night of entertainment at Lumb Farm Country Club on the 23rd of November. Individual band members, their families and many of their friends have all in some way undergone treatment or have been closely touched by cancer. Over the years the bands have played at several fund raising events in support of various cancer charities. This is the second event directly promoted by the musicians themselves. They hope that their contributions will assist Cancer Research UK as it strives to improve treatments and provide solutions.
We hope that you will come and support us.
ABOUT THE BANDS The Strangers formed in 1962. A local band – originally called a Rhythm Group! – from Somercotes and Leabrooks, they are still working and playing for functions together after 57 years and they’re soon to be recording at Abbey Road Studios, London. It seems a far cry from the early 1960s and playing just a few hundred yards up the road from Lumb Farm at St John’s Youth Club, Marehay and local dance halls like the Regal in Ripley and the Casino in Alfreton. The ever-popular Mick Ford Band play a mix of early rock and roll and country music. Mick has worked the club circuit throughout the UK for many years. He’s also performed in Memphis and Nashville USA. Our star guest, Dave Manders, was an original member of Paper Lace, Nottingham’s most successful band. After leaving the band in the seventies, Dave was, for many years, one of the UK’s foremost guitar/vocalist entertainers. Dave still retains all his special talent and charisma and we’re delighted that he’s working with the Strangers on this fund raising night.

Slimming World Recipe

Toad In The Hole The range of food available on the Slimming World Plan is astonishing! Toad in the Hole is one of my favourites. Why not try it with green beans, mashed potato and SW Onion Gravy? - Yum Yum! Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 Hour Syns per serving: 3
Method: 1. Preheat your oven to 220°C/fan 200°C/gas 7. Spread the sausages in a large, non-stick roasting tin in a single layer. Spray with low-calorie cooking spray and cook for 10 minutes. 2. Turn over the sausages, then scatter the onion rings over the top. Spray lightly with a little more low-calorie cooking spray and return to the oven for a further 15 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, sieve the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl or a large jug. Use a hand whisk to mix in the milk very gradually, followed by 75ml water to make a smooth, lump-free batter. 4. Whisk in the eggs, one at a time, until the batter is well combined (it should be a smooth, pourable consistency). Stir in the rosemary and sage, and season. 5. When the sausages are cooked, remove the tin from the oven and quickly pour the batter around them. Return the tin to the oven. Reduce the oven temperature to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6 and bake for 25 minutes, or until the batter is puffed up and golden.
Ingredients: • 12 frozen Slimming World Synfree Pork Sausages • Low-calorie cooking spray • 1 large onion, sliced into rings • 60g plain flour • 2 level tsp baking powder • 100ml skimmed milk • 5 large eggs • 2 fresh rosemary sprigs, leaves roughly chopped • 2 tsp dried sage

Book Review
The Other End of the Line by Andrea Camilleri
If you’ve seen any of the Inspector Montalbano series on TV you’ll be familiar with the grumpy Sicilian detective and the wit and brio (and food!) of his world. But you may not know that Montalbano’s creator was Andrea Camilleri whose two dozen plus novels have sold 30 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 32 languages. The latest, The Other End of the Line, has just been published, two months after his death at the age of 93. As with all Camilleri’s books the “case” is only part of the story. Always his passion for life and social justice and the people and island of Sicily shines through. In this tale the detective tries to unravel the murder of the dressmaker at the local tailor. She is a woman he found himself charmed by when, to his dismay, he had been sent by his girlfriend to get a “proper” suit for a wedding.
Ashmere Derbyshire is a group of seven homes, soon to be eight based in Derbyshire, specializing in residential, nursing and dementia care.
Our ethos is “caring for your family as if they were our family” With an array of activities happening throughout the day there is always some thing to keep you entertained Recognised by CQC as a good provider with the investors in people standard, skills for care endorsed training and the gold standards framework end of life award, Ashmere provides quality care for a range of needs.
Feel free to pop in and have a look around.
But at the same time, Montalbano’s coastal town of Vigata faces a swell of refugees arriving nightly by boat in search of a better life. The whole town is trying to help the migrants while exhausted police try to track down the people smugglers who are getting rich on other people’s misery. Camilleri describes the situation, almost on our doorstep, with humanity and lucidity. His fans will be pleased to know that is not quite the last book. At least one more is still to be published.

Hi I’m Mandy your Personal Travel Counsellor.
We all enjoy watching the big sporting events like the Olympics, the Football World Cup, the Formula One racing and The Ashes on TV and, if you’re like me, you will have even thought about going to the live events as the atmosphere must be such an amazing experience! Often though people are put off thinking that it’ll be too expensive, or they won’t be able to find exactly what they want. To be fair, it used to be difficult to get official tickets for a lot of events, but that has now changed!

READER RECOMMENDS SEVERAL OF OUR ADVERTISERS Over the years that we have been up and running, we always pride ourselves on trying to bring you the best local advertisers we can find and we always say “don’t just take our word for it….”. Since the very early days, we’ve had lots of readers phone and write in to tell us about what a fabulous job our advertisers have done and we want you to keep doing that to help them to grow their businesses. After all, if someone is doing a great job, why keep it a secret!? This month, we’ve had an email from Mr & Mrs Hill who have moved from Riddings to Selston and this is what they had to say….. “Dear Voice Magazines / Emily and Team We recently moved house from Riddings to Selston and took our latest Voice magazine with us! It has been invaluable. We needed the oven cleaning desperately so contacted Name Violet at OvenCharm and she was able to come the following day. We were without TV for 3 weeks and Lee at College Aerials was able to come and sort this for us. And we also contacted Grant at Premier Blinds to organise some black out blinds for the bedrooms, and because we were ordering so many, he was able to give us a discount. My husband and I have never used any of these local companies before, and were really pleased with all of them, their prompt service, and would definitely recommend to others. Mr and Mrs Hill “

Rambles with RafFa lake and
3-mile circular walk from Pinxton Wharf via Selston
A short but sweet walk from our resident ramble aficionado David of JH Legal. David has provided a little extra information in the description about two of the places we visit on this walk, Pinxton Wharf and St Helen’s Church. I think this local history really adds to the colour of the walk so a big thank you to David! We begin the walk at Pinxton Wharf. The Boat Inn is very close by and a good spot to stop in for some refreshment. It is dog friendly indoors and out. We walk along the canal for a short while before branching off across country towards Selston. We enter Selston briefly and walk past St Helen’s Church. Before heading back across country back towards Pinxton Wharf.
A gentle walk which should take you and your dog around 1½-2 hours to complete. There is a couple of quiet roads so please take care, however most of the walk is on paths and trails. Please wear appropriate footwear and, as always, follow the countryside code.
a gap in a fence along a marked footpath. The path leads to a farm track. Continue along the track to continue up and over a bridge. Shortly after the bridge and just prior to reaching a large metal gate directly in front of you, turn left to walk along a farm track going uphill. 4. At the top of the hill keep ahead into a open field, passing a yellow marker post on your left. Continue straight ahead over the brow of the hill and down the other side aiming for a small single tree in the hedge row on the far side of the field. Cross over a tiny stream and pass through the hedge to continue straight ahead for a short distance across another field. 5. At the far side pass through a gap into another field and now continue with the hedge on your right. Upon reaching a large metal gate on your right, ignore a marked path straight ahead and bear left to continue along the edge of the same field keeping the hedge on your right. At the far side of the field continue straight ahead along a narrow path with a fence on your left until reaching a stile. Cross the stile and continue along the edge of another field with a hedge on your right. 6. At the far side of this field cross another stile and then continue uphill to a road. Turn left along the road and after a short distance pass the church on your left. (Take a look at St Helens Church which holds the grave of Gypsy King Dan Boswell.[walk to the left hand side of the

7. Continue to the far side of the field, pass through a gap and continue through a kissing gate. Now continue with a hedge on your left. After some distance follow the path over to the right to meet up with a kissing gate at the far side of the field. Pass through the gate and cross over a tarmac lane onto a marked footpath. Pass a farm and then a wind turbine on your left to continue straight ahead going downhill with a hedge on your left. 8. At the bottom of the field keep ahead along a narrow footpath going downhill. At the bottom cross over a railway line and then continue for a short distance to pass through a squeeze gate. Immediately after, turn left pass through another squeeze gate to continue along a footpath. Continue until reaching a road and the start of your walk.

START: Pinxton Wharf, Alexander Terrace, Off Wharf Road, Pinxton. Notts. NG16 6PL
1. Enter the wharf through a squeeze gate on Alexander Terrace near the railway crossing and continue straight ahead along the footpath directly in front of you. (Pinxton Wharf was the terminus for the Cromford canal, which was built to link the collieries to the River Trent. Pinxton China works were also in operation very close to the wharf.) After some distance cross over a small wooden footbridge and then a little further on pass over a larger wooden footbridge. Immediately after crossing the 2nd bridge turn right to continue along a footpath with a canal on your right.

church and it is a few feet from the door by a small holly tree] The grave stone faces the wrong way-it is not the original stone which was supposedly broken in two after being kicked by a cow. This dates back to when cows were kept in the churchyard . St Helens Church also contains the only 12thC incised stone in England. This is sited by the Chancel and is really worth viewing.) After passing the church continue along the road for some distance until reaching No.123. Turn left along a marked footpath adjacent to No.123 going downhill. After a short distance cross straight over a lane, pass through a gap and continue straight ahead across a field with a hedge on your left.
2. Continue along the footpath passing ‘The Boat Inn’ on your left, until reaching a squeeze gate. Pass through the gate and then bear right. After a very short distance pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate and continue straight ahead along a lane keeping the canal on your right.

Helping grandchildren achieve a debt free degree At this time of year when over 500,000 students are expected to and are applied to the beneficiary of that element of the policy. start university for the first time, now seems a good time to focus What does this actually mean? If we look at the figures based on on how older members of a family can help with the costs of the current tax year, there’s a personal allowance of £12,500 gaining a university education. which can be earned tax free here in the UK, and there’s also a If you’re a grandparent looking at ways to help the younger personal savings allowance of £1,000 and the starting rate for generation of your family then there are some options open to savings is £5,000. This means that during a year there’s a potential you. As with all financial planning it requires some forethought total of £18,500 which can be made available tax free. and plans can be made many years ahead to help future An income of £18,500 per year would be sufficient to pay for the grandchildren at this important time in their education. university fees, which in many instances are now at the top threshold of £9,250, as well as covering accommodation and living costs. Such a significant sum could make a huge difference to whether your grandchild continues with their education and it will reduce future Inheritance Tax liabilities too. The thought of accumulating debts of £50,000 or more could put many off going to university so why not talk to the team at Hampshire Hill to see how you might be able to help with this burden? Offshore bonds are a popular choice for this form of financial management. During the investment years there is no UK tax to pay on an interest or gains from the investment; tax is only attributed to the drawings on the policy at the appropriate time

Reece Edwards, who has been at the company for over 4 years gained this status in July and the business couldn’t be prouder of his achievement. Richard Hampshire, Managing Director at Hampshire Hill Group said “It’s not often a small business like ours is able to have a team member being the first to achieve such an accreditation. We certainly feel it’s something to celebrate and I couldn’t be more thrilled on Reece’s achievement. It just proves that you don’t need to use a large London firm to benefit from the best people and knowledge; we have it all here in Kirkby.” Hampshire Hill Group Ltd 12 Diamond Avenue Kirkbyin-Ashfield Nottinghamshire NG17 7GR 01623 750000 info@hampshirehill.co.uk www.hampshirehill.co.uk

SWANWICK MEN’S SHED NAMED COMMUNITY PROJECT OF THE YEAR On Tuesday 3rd September The Swanwick Men’s Shed received the prestigious accolade of Community Project of the Year form the United Kingdom Men’s Shed Association at Shedfest 2019. Shedfest is an annual award ceremony and celebration of all things shed. It is where ‘Shedders’ gather to discuss, debate, demonstrate, exhibit and generally immerse themselves in sheds and shed life. The Swanwick Men’s Shed was selected from over 500 sheds to receive this impressive award, which was given in recognition of the fantastic garden project and the amazing work they do supporting Lighthouse Charity group, ValleyCids and the Turner Farm Project, amongst others. The shedders have worked closely with Swanwick W.I., The Rotary Club of Amber Valley and the wider community on the garden project for the Rowthorne Care Home. They were faced with a bleak open space of a garden which housed nothing but a shed and two old tree stumps. Their remit from the matron was to provide a safe, usable, outside space for residents to enjoy. After consulting the community to gather their ideas the Shedders set about building raised planters, suitable for disabled residents and safe seating that was the right height to be comfortable for everyone to use. The new garden encourages families to spend time with their loved ones in a quiet sensory environment. It also encouraged residents to participate in a garden experience. It’s now providing an environment where wildlife can thrive. The project has made a great impact on the lives of the residents, relatives, friends and staff of the home and the door to the garden is open from early morning to late at night!

01623 459891 Having lost his rag last month, George has popped off to Scotland for a little respite. Perhaps he will find a new rag, maybe even in a nice Tartan print!

George has been on holiday No More Painting
As you know, George has had quite a hard time of it this year, not enjoying the best of mental health. It’s been a direct result of him finding it difficult to deal with all the moaning and groaning from those who have looked upon him as being ‘the answer to their prayers’ in his role as UCIP’s People’s Champion. He continues to take his responsibilities seriously. However, listening intently every day to some of the outlandish suggestions his fellow citizens make to improve the lot of the common man/woman of this country, would make anyone, never mind our strongwilled George, question their sanity. After a visit to the surgery – it had been so long since he’d been he had to re-introduce himself to the GP! – the expert advice was that his general state of health was good but that a relaxing holiday would probably work wonders. Well, with the select few eligible to have a say on who the UK’s new Prime Minister was to be, having favoured Boris Johnson, he had concerns. He understood that there was now every likelihood that those who live in Scotland would probably secede – via a democratic referendum of course - from the Union. As a result, he decided to treat his wife to a few days in Scotland as he wanted to find out why it was that Scots were unlikely to warmly embrace the tousled haired blonde buffoon as their new PM.
No More Ladders telephone call, Hamish MacDonald kindly agreed Fascias to the pair of them travelling north to spend some time Soffits with him and his lovely wife, Morag.

View from the Allotment
High Quality Service, Windows, Doors & Conservatories.
As Secretary of the Leabrooks (Bridle Lane) Allotment Association (LBLAA) I spend quite a lot of time wondering why we have vacant plots!
Maybe the recent forced publication of the ‘Operation Yellowhammer’ paper with its doom and gloom worst case scenario of what could happen with a No-Deal Brexit will change the situation. We are threatened with shortages of fresh vegetables, as well as rising food and fuel prices.
R
19
On the Today programme recently a spokesman for a supermarket confirmed this worry about shortages of fresh produce which arrive from Europe with only a 2-day shelf life. He pointed out that as we approach October a lot of the fresh veg grown in Britain comes to an end and we rely on fresh veg being imported from abroad. On our plot potatoes are now stored for winter, and we are picking to eat or freeze runner and French beans, kale, cabbages, leeks, spinach, purple flowering broccoli, lettuce, carrots, fruit - all fresh and tasty. And with good planning we will be harvesting some veg all winter.

Many other allotment associations have waiting lists and charge much higher tenancy fees. My daughter in Birmingham pays £80 per year for her small plot while this year I paid a modest £17 for my 400 sq yard plot and this includes some insurance and water usage. Admittedly our charges will rise a bit next year but not by much.

So why do we have vacant plots? Are our life styles so busy that it is so much easier to buy from shops? With an allotment plot you get healthy outdoor exercise, saving gym fees, plus the bonus of fresh vegetables. For information on plots on the LBLAA site phone our plots bailiff Mick on 07725402033.

Most gardeners will, despite the fact that there’s still plenty growing, be thinking about spring. So wallflowers violas and winter pansies can go now into the ground along with bulbs. Remember daffs, crocus and narcissus can be planted now but tulips left until well into November to avoid tulip fire. A handy rule of thumb for most bulbs is to plant pretty deep - two to three times their height. Lilies can also be planted in containers now for next summer though it’s probably best to keep the pots in a cool frost-free place rather than outside if you anticipate frozen ground in your garden this winter.

If you have heucheras and they’re starting to look a bit sad it’s a good time to lift and divide, get rid of any rot or decay and replant in small clumps. Perennials such as crocosmia or peonies which produce leaves and flower stems from underground, can be cut back to soil level. But leave stems around penstemons to protect the crown when they start growing again. There’s so many leaves dropping just now, it hardly seems worth the bother of raking them. However there are two good reasons to do this – if left to lie on grass they will get sludgy and damage your lawn, but also leaf mould is great mulch. Usually it can take up to a couple of years to get good leaf mould but you can speed things up by collecting and mowing before bagging. Broken down leaves decay much faster.
TOP TIP!
If you’ve been growing peas or beans this year the temptation is always to heave them out once they’ve finished producing. Just cut back to ground level instead – the roots are a great source of nitrogen which is great for renewing the soil. 06/11/2018 18:16

COOPER’S CORNER This month Barry is banging on about cricket… wait, did I read that right? Cricket?! During the football season? Now I know the worlds gone mad. It must have been a good Summer for the sport then? Let’s see what Barry has to say. To regular readers of this column, you’ll note that football tends to be the subject of choice. However, after a memorable few months of England’s major summer sport, it feels only fitting that this month’s waffle should be dedicated to cricket. What a few months it has been for the England team, Eoin Morgan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad et all. If you’re a cricket fan then it’s probably been one of the best in living memory, and if you’re not, there’s a fairly good chance that you’ve been captivated by the World Cup and then the Ashes. I know my good lady has become completely infatuated with it, as has one of my good friends – neither cared too much for cricket at the start of the summer – oh how they’re reformed characters now. Cricket’s a magnificent sport, one of the quintessential English games, played throughout the Commonwealth, with arguably its biggest rivalry being that between the two countries which contest the Ashes. And boy has it delivered. First up, it was that magnificent early July afternoon at Lord’s when Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer somehow led England to a first World Cup title in the One Day format of the game over New Zealand in the most dramatic of circumstances. That engaged a nation, it gave the whole country something to celebrate amid all the chaotic nonsense generated by those in Westminster and the whole Brexit shambles. Cricket is like no other sport, even football struggles to generate the pure, dramatic fluctuations - the games that operate within a game, how one wicket can change the course of an entire outcome. It’s unrivalled and I mean that with the greatest respects to others.
Unfortunately, like everything else, cricket is reliant on the finances delivered by satellite television and ticket sales, so while having an Ashes series just a couple of weeks after a home World Cup was far from ideal for the players, it was a necessity from the point of view of England and Wales’ Cricket Board’s bean counters. Once again, it delivered in spades. We can debate all day long the merits of the Ashes being played so close to a World Cup, but in truth, for England to come out of it unbeaten is a success in itself. I was at Headingley to see the team bowled out for 67 on that Friday afternoon, walking away into the sultry Leeds evening, believing the Test and Ashes were gone. The one man who didn’t was Ben Stokes and his heroic colleague, Jack Leach. Stokes’ innings to see England win that match was as good as it gets, it was memorable to say the least. Watching from Trent Bridge, who were playing Yorkshire in the Twenty20 competition, nobody amid the 16,000 cared what was happening out in the middle that day, we were all trying to follow the action from Leeds – the team had captivated a nation, again, just like in 2005. Yes, England may not have been able to win the little urn outright this summer and reclaim it from those pesky Aussies, but we’ve won a World Cup and drawn an Ashes series in the space of three months. That’s something to be proud of, those players are ones to herald, to be proud of and cricket has shown that we can all love it. What an absolute delight it’s been. Now, if we could just get more of it on terrestrial for the masses to see (and don’t get me started on the Hundred)...
