Shouting about businesses in the heart of your community

From the Editor Merry Christmas everyone! What a special time of year this is. As the nights draw in it is tempting to retreat to the warmth and security of our homes but the peak district is so stunningly beautiful this time of year it keeps luring us out. There are so many fun things to do, with Christmas themed events from markets and Christmas light switch-on’s to tree festivals and carol singing. But even with all this, my favourite thing is still the simplest, a nice walk with our dogs and lovely meal in a cosy pub! It’s been a big year for us at Voice HQ. The split in our Rural edition into the Hope Valley edition and Bakewell edition seems to have gone down a storm! Both magazines are doing really well, having found their new identities. As a result, the magazines have grown in terms of area, as we add new villages such as Youlgrave, which has become part of our Bakewell magazine this month and also in terms of the size of the magazines.

4 Storeys, Commercial, Schools, Hotels & Industrial

This has meant we have been able to add new features, such as the fantastic writings by Laura Billingham whose articles on our ancient ancestors have been fascinating. We wanted to do something different with these articles and I think Laura has hit the nail on the head. I hope you are enjoying them as much as we are. Please keep the feedback and ideas for articles coming. It has been lovely to receive so much positive feedback since the split and I promise we will keep trying to improve the magazines. Congratulations to the NEC Xmas Gift Fair winners. Every year we get such a fantastic response so my apologies to those who did not get tickets, but I have another opportunity to bring you some post-Christmas fun with a competition to win a Family ticket to see Jack and the Beanstalk at the Pomegranate Theatre in Chesterfield on 4thJanuary. See page 32 for more details. On a personal note I would like to send a special Get Well message out to Jon, who has been amazing, helping us with our distribution for the last few years.

Without Jon I don’t know how we would have been able to get the mags out month after month. He’s out of commission for a couple of months but we’re looking forward to having him back soon and we’ll do our best to cope without him. Looking forward to seeing you again in 2020!!

Emily x

WALKING FOOTBALL COMES TO BAKEWELL Walking Football is exactly as the name suggests - you play football, walking! Aimed at people over 50, this inclusive, fun and sociable version of the game is slow-paced but lacks none of the passion of the original game. Whether you’re looking to keep active, stay fit, or widen your circle of friends, Walking Football offers the perfect opportunity to do just that, as there are many social health

benefits that come with playing. Taking time to socialise, meet new people or even build confidence are all part and parcel of taking part in this slower version of the beautiful game. The game originally started in Chesterfield,10 years ago, was popularised by the Barclays bank advert and currently has over 800 clubs nationwide. And soon there will be a session in Bakewell.

Starting on 8th January at the new Lady Manners all weather pitch, the sessions, under the auspices of Derbyshire FA, are being organized by Peak Trinity Church as part of their community outreach and will take place on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 8pm.

For further details on the sessions(or the church) contact David Moss on 07767 407743 or david.peaktrinity@yahoo.com

Slimming World Recipe

Start your Christmas with...

The Eyre Arms

Roast Turkey Christmas is a tough time to stay on plan but Slimming World have made it a little easier with this great Roast Turkey recipe. Serves: 8 Ready in: 6 Hour Syns per serving: 2.5

Method:

1. Make the stuffing. Put the onions, garlic and stock in a large saucepan, cover with a lid and bring to the boil. Boil for 5-10 minutes, then uncover the pan and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the onions are tender and syrupy and the liquid is absorbed. 2. Roughly tear the bread, place in a food processor and blitz until you have fine crumbs. 3. 3Stir the breadcrumbs, herbs, seasoning, lemon zest and juice, and the egg into the stock mixture. Transfer to a bowl and set aside to cool thoroughly. 4. Wash the turkey inside and out, pat dry with kitchen paper and season. Pack the stuffing into the neck cavity and secure with a skewer. 5. Place the turkey, breast side down, on a rack in a large roasting pan and cover loosely with foil. Cook in a preheated oven at 220°C/200°C Fan/Gas Mark 7 for 45 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas Mark 5 and turn the turkey over. Replace the foil and cook for 3 ½ hours. 6. Remove the foil and replace the turkey in the oven for a further 30 minutes. It is cooked when the juices run clear when you pierce it behind the leg with a sharp knife or a skewer. 7. Let the turkey stand for about 20 minutes, just covered with the foil. Before carving, make sure that you remove any skin.

The Age of the Megalith Builders We pick up our ancient Derbyshire ancestors where we left them, that is around 6,000 years ago, an age known as the Neolithic. Separated from the rest of the European continent, our ancestors began to move away from a hunter gatherer society (one where they roamed at will) and instead we begin to see the very beginnings of agriculture and settled communities of people.

about 45m from the centre of the circle.

In 2011 archaeologist discovered a Neolithic village near Wirksworth. Bits of pottery and stone tools were uncovered, plus what look like post holes – perhaps for supporting dwelling structures. Also found were traces of ancient grains and burnt pieces of hazelnut shell.

Arbor Low Stone Circle just off the A515 is probably the best-known stone circle in Derbyshire. Unlike all the others, which are of millstone grit, it is constructed of limestone. There are 30 or so collapsed blocks which are thought to have stood in an egg-shaped inner ring 37m by 41m. They are surrounded by a bank and ditch.

At the time this village was established, Derbyshire, along with much of the UK was heavily wooded. Farming was not on the scale we know today but based around rather small plots, just enough to keep a family or small group self-sufficient. They perhaps had cattle and probably still hunted for much of their meat. Around this period we begin to see evidence of megalithic (literally ‘large stone’) monuments appearing in the landscape. We will never know if settlements arose because of the need to stay in one place to build; or if the megalithic structures came first encouraging settling in an area. Whatever the reason, not to mention how they were built, Derbyshire is unusually blessed with megalithic circles and standing stones. The best-known circles are probably Nine Ladies Stone Circle, on Stanton Moor: approx. 10m in diameter, each stone is less than 1m tall and there is a single outlying block of millstone grit

Nine Stones Close Stone Circle (also known as the Grey Ladies) on Harthill moor, north of Elton: this has the tallest stones of any of the Derbyshire circles, ranging from 1.2m to 2.1m but only 4 stones remain of what once was 45.

Barbrook I on Big Moor just off the A621, is a small ring of 12 stones, the tallest of which marks the position of the mid-winter sun. Another smaller circle is nearby.

Hordron Seven Stones circle on Moscar Moor off the main A 57 near the Lady Bower dam, has around 20 stones only 10 of which remain upright. There are many other megalithic constructions in Derbyshire. Without the aid of a time machine we will probably never know why our ancient ancestors built (and presumably) maintained these structures, but if you want to take a peek at some of them look at this website http://www.stonecircles.org.uk/stone/ Next month we will explore the Bronze Age – approx. 2000 to 500 BC. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Hope Valley Business Zoo Business Networking @HNBZ Networking

Do’s and Don’ts

Business owners may avoid networking for several reasons. Rigid, ‘must always bring referrals and never miss a session’ kind of events seem like hard work.

Do spend some time working on ‘your pitch’, usually 30-60 seconds is required.

Large yearly membership fees plus additional weekly meeting payments quickly add up and, if you’re just starting, out these can seem like just another unjustifiable expense. However, networking has changed yes, the ‘old style’ membership ones still exist but there are plenty of pay as you attend groups around and everyone who runs their own business should factor in attending meetings on a regular basis.

Do ensure that you mention exactly what you are looking for – e.g. the type of business or client you would like to meet. Do attend meetings regularly, dipping in and out won’t help you build relationships. Do refer business to people you network with – reciprocity is the name of the game! Do follow up with people – networking is not just about handing out business cards. Don’t launch straight into a sales pitch. Don’t expect results (i.e. sales) immediately, it could take several months Don’t speak to only one person or group – ensure you talk to as many other attendees as possible. Don’t GIVE UP

Please note that some of the groups listed incur a small charge and we would always recommend that you contact a group prior to attendance.

When a child feels they are not as good as their friends at school they learn ‘coping strategies’ which hide them from view and allow them to survive in the classroom. Strategies take on a life of their own. Sometimes this is seen as naughtiness, lack of concentration or in Bailey’s case bad handwriting! Now why would he want bad handwriting you wonder? Well it was because he found spelling so difficult and failed miserably at it.

His coping strategy for his teacher was ‘if you can’t read it, you can’t correct it’. Bailey’s mum was concerned about his handwriting, reading and spelling so in July 2018, when he was 6, she brought him to Jo at Kip for a FREE assessment. This showed that his reading was in line with expectations for his age but he did have trouble with spelling, also his hand writing was very difficult to read. In addition his concentration levels were a bit erratic and he was easily distracted. How many parents of children, particularly boys, are familiar with that scenario! Because he wasn’t so far behind in his reading, Jo suggested he would benefit from attending the six sessions of the summer school at the end of August and it would also prepare him for going back to school in September. At the end of those 2 weeks, his hand writing was much easier to decipher, but more to the point, he’d enjoyed himself so much that he wanted to continue at Kip in the September and work on his spelling!

By Christmas ( 3 months later) his spelling had improved by a whole year and he was routinely using full sentences when completing reading comprehensions, something he had not done before… and his handwriting was so much better , we could read them all too! He is now so confident that each week he delights in telling Jo how many spellings he got right at school in the previous test and his improved literacy skills are helping him with his school work generally. Even his teachers have commented on this to his proud mum! Bailey has gone from being a little boy who was already finding ways to ‘cope’ at school and stay below the radar to one who is now learning with gusto and revelling in his new found confidence. He will continue as this new confident little boy and move even higher up the academic ladder as he gets older. If he feels unsure he can always rely on his Kip teachers to support him and get him out of the rut.

Well done Bailey! If you think your child is using a similar ‘coping strategy’ why not bring them along to Jo at Kip for a FREE assessment and let them be the best at school that they can be.

Mandarin Duck spreading across the Peak’s rivers ….. Over the last ten or twenty years a new bird has appeared on rivers like the Derwent at Baslow and at Chatsworth. In recent years we have gained an amazingly spectaular bird with perhaps the most outlandish plumage of all (now-) British birds. This is the Mandarin Duck, the drake of which looks like a garishly dressed Chinese ‘mandarin’ in full regalia. As a non-native’ species now rapidly spreading across Britain, not everyone is keen on this new arrival. Nevertheless, I do like them and so do many readers who contact me to ask what on earth has arrived on their local pond or river. This bird has quietly colonised local rivers, lakes and ponds in recent years and to an extent has ‘slipped under the radar’. Now it is here and in some abundance. The Mandarin is widely considered to be the most beautiful duck in the world, and that is why it has arrived with us, brought to our shores by wildfowl enthusiasts. In Britain, escapees from collections and deliberate releases into the wild have led to a growing population through the twentieth century, with something over 7,000 established by the 1990s. British birds began to arrive in the 1700s, brought to grand landscape parks and gardens of the rich aristocracy. Widespread escapes during the 1900s meant numbers rose throughout the late twentieth century. The fervour to collect them from native haunts was one contributing factor in a rapid decline in their homeland. They are now threatened in native habitats in southeast Asia, with fewer than 1,000 pairs in each of eastern Russia and China, and around 5,000 pairs in Japan. Along with collecting

and export to collections around the world, the destruction of forest habitats has combined with this to cause catastrophic declines. So the native bird has gone down but our feral population is on the way up – and there hangs a conservation conundrum! Traditional Chinese culture regards Mandarin Ducks as life-long couples, unlike other most other ducks. They are therefore seen as symbolic of conjugal affection and fidelity. Unusually for ducks, the adult birds, (which live to about six years or so), nest in holes and cavities in trees. They tend to feed dusk and dawn and often shelter along the water’s edge under overhanging branches and shrubbery, or perch on tree branches. Whilst males are stunningly striking, the bird is often quite shy and the female, dull, pale brown with white markings, can easily be overlooked. The duck lays around eight to twelve eggs in the nest in a tree hollow in April and the male may defend the brooding female.

Gardener’s Calendar

We’re mostly heading towards the winter protection zone now in the garden. Time to bubble wrap container pots which can also go up on “feet” if there’s a risk of waterlogging. Cut roses in wind-exposed plots back to a third of their height to stop wind rock which damages roots. Create a grease layer – there’s loads of makes on the market – to prevent wingless female fruit moths climbing fruit trees and laying their eggs in the branches and impacting on next year’s crop. Between now and February is a good time to shape and prune apple and pear trees – but not plums which are liable to crop damaging silver leaf damage if pruned at the wrong time of year.

r

Don’t worry overmuch about fungi appearing in beds or lawns. People sometimes fear they are signs of the dreaded honey fungus. But this destructive fungus appears at the base of affected plants and shrubs rather than randomly across a garden and you will probably have already spotted problems with the plant. In some cases bunches of honey coloured toadstools briefly pop up on infected stumps. But the plant will also be looking sick, particularly in the upper reaches as roots are killed off by the fungus. The most obvious sign is a white sheet of fine fungal growth between the wood and bark at ground level so you need to peel bark back there if you have suspicions. The only way to eradicate it is to heave the plant or bush out and destroy the roots and stump – don’t put it on the compost heap!

Merry Christma and Happy New year t al our customer Froggatt Edge Garage

TOP TIP!

1: Place a plank (or something similar) across your main access point into the garden to prevent compacting of grass or beds when you’re walking across and working over the winter. 2: Don’t chuck spent compost from tubs – it makes a great mulch for beds 06/11/2018 18:16
