The Voice was kindly invited by Danny Wilkinson of Hilcote Country Club to attend evening dinner on what was a dark, blustery October Friday night to sample their new menu. Danny and his staff gave us a lovely warm welcome which was especially appreciated considering the conditions outside. To begin with we relaxed with a drink in the spacious bar that was busy but not too crowded, just right really.

With a good selection of starters that included favourites such as, soup of the day, which was a mouth watering thick and creamy leek and potato, with warm crusty bread and butter, nachos with melted cheese and salsa and also unusually with dash of BBQ sauce, mozzarella with sour cream dip and BBQ chicken wings; we decided to go with selection from all of the above. Turning our thoughts to our main meals the Voice was pleasantly surprised with the wide choice that was on offer that included a wide range of pub classics from the a la carte menu such as lasagne, surf and turf, homemade pie of the day and chicken skewers with salad and chips. Also set out was the hot table with the usual

carvery selection that included roast beef and roast pork with crackling, and pleasing to see was a fine selection of alternative delicious looking dishes including Aberdeen angus steak and ale pie, pork in pepper sauce, braising steak in red wine & mushroom Sauce and vegetarian curry to mention but a few, all available with a selection of sweet potato fries, fresh vegetables, mash potato and roast potatoes to compliment any meal. With our stomachs now reaching bursting point we made sure there was just a little room left to sample the range of scrummy looking deserts with the likes of banoffee waffles, chocolate fudge cake, apple pie, cheesecake and chocolate brownie to mention but a few; indeed we couldn’t resist the chocolate fudge cake, waffles and cheesecake which certainly went down well. To finish off we relaxed with coffees served at our table which brought an end to a lovely evening of food, drink and good service, the Voice would like to thank Danny and his staff for inviting us and showing us such a warm welcome.

Slimming World Recipe

Supplying Bouquets & Floral Designs For Special Occasions

Roast Turkey Christmas is a tough time to stay on plan but Slimming World have made it a little easier with this great Roast Turkey recipe. Serves: 8 Ready in: 6 Hour Syns per serving: 2.5

Method:

1. Make the stuffing. Put the onions, garlic and stock in a large saucepan, cover with a lid and bring to the boil. Boil for 5-10 minutes, then uncover the pan and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the onions are tender and syrupy and the liquid is absorbed. 2. Roughly tear the bread, place in a food processor and blitz until you have fine crumbs. 3. 3Stir the breadcrumbs, herbs, seasoning, lemon zest and juice, and the egg into the stock mixture. Transfer to a bowl and set aside to cool thoroughly. 4. Wash the turkey inside and out, pat dry with kitchen paper and season. Pack the stuffing into the neck cavity and secure with a skewer. 5. Place the turkey, breast side down, on a rack in a large roasting pan and cover loosely with foil. Cook in a preheated oven at 220°C/200°C Fan/Gas Mark 7 for 45 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas Mark 5 and turn the turkey over. Replace the foil and cook for 3 ½ hours. 6. Remove the foil and replace the turkey in the oven for a further 30 minutes. It is cooked when the juices run clear when you pierce it behind the leg with a sharp knife or a skewer. 7. Let the turkey stand for about 20 minutes, just covered with the foil. Before carving, make sure that you remove any skin.

Book Review

The Secret Barrister – Stories of the Law and How It’s Broken by The Secret Barrister The days when everyone believed that the legal system in this country served the needs of criminal justice, seem to be fast vanishing. Are the scales of justice maybe a bit wonky? Could it be that the good guys don’t always win and the bad guys don’t always get their just desserts? If you’ve had suspicions that all is not well in the land of m’lud and the other servants of law and order, you’ll find The Secret Barrister – Stories of the Law and How It’s Broken; by author The Secret Barrister a brilliant non-fiction read. The Secret Barrister is a real-life junior barrister who specialises in criminal law in this country and has written for various national newspapers and magazines. He peels away the images we’ve learned from films, TV and newspapers and dishes the dirt on how cases are really won and lost and how the law often fails those it is supposed to be protecting. Through his human stories we hear sometimes heart-rending, but also some horribly funny tales of what increasingly starts to look like a game of legal Russian roulette. This is biting stuff, showing a system going wrong, but it’s also sensitive to the tragedies which may be played out in courts of law and which may impact on people’s lives for ever. It’s certainly an eye opener and tough in places. But it’s well written and cogently argued and if enough people read it, it may change public perceptions enough to help push the reform which is evidently urgently needed.

Following the success of the last few months, we have extended our focus on South Normanton for one more month to cover Christmas. This month, as well as the very popular map and focus on the fantastic array of local businesses and community groups, services and churches, we also have a two-page feature on the history of Carnfield Hall.

The History of Carnfield Hall - Part 2 In part 1 we covered the more recent history of Carnfield Hall, from the early 1900’s to present day. This month we are going to delve in the early history of the Hall. As mentioned previously there is a reference made to the Estate in the Doomsday Book, as far back as 1086. However, it is likely that there was a hall dating back even before this from archaeological remains of buildings on the site. The name Carnfield is thought to derive from the Carlingthwaite or Carnthwaite, meaning ‘an old woman’s clearing’ in ancient Norse, hinting at Viking origins, for the location at least. Further documentation for the Hall exists from the early 1300’s however there is little else known until it passes into the hands of the Babbington family in the 15th Century, when in the 1470’s Alice Babington married Gregory Page and the Estate, with it’s 500 acres forming her dowry. When their son Willian became a Catholic Priest, it meant all his possessions would be inherited by the church upon the death of his parents. This was not well received by their relatives Hugh & Robert Revell, who sought to wrest ownership back by kidnapping Mrs Page and, under the threat of rape and murder, purchased the Hall for a fraction of its true worth in 1502.

FRIENDLY SERVICE AT YOUR LOCAL SHOP

Chilled beers/wines • Sweets General Store

5 Reasons to Shop Local 1.

Receive better service and good advice – Local shops rely on their reputations. The business owners love what they do and take great pride in their expertise and service. So why go anywhere else?

2.

Help the local economy – As I’ve mentioned before research shows that every £10 you spend locally adds £50 to the local economy as the money is re-spent again and again

3.

Find something different – Big shopping centres often have the same shops, stocking the same items. The internet isn’t much better as anyone who has ‘panic bought’ on the Amazon shipping deadline will tell you. Local shops are often unique and will offer something different to lure you in.

Despite their less than illustrious start the Revells proved good custodians of the Hall undertaking much restoration and development over the subsequent 300 years. However, their time was not without controversy and incident.

The final Revell to own the Hall was Tristram in 1770. He was the illegitimate son of Edward, cousin of Reverend Francis. Tirstram was a Colonel in the army who died in battle in 1779. It passed to the John Eardley-Wilmott, who got into financial difficulty and, to avoid embarrassment, became Governor of Tazmania and sold the property to Land Agent,

In 1584 George Revell inherited the Hall. George was not well liked by his servants and Thomas Thorpe, his bodyguard, robbed him and stole his money. But no charges were laid against Thomas as George had failed to pay him in over 6 years!

During the Civil War Francis Revell had a warrant issued for his arrest as a Royalist, however by a delicate balance of supporting Parliament he preserved the Hall intact so that it could be inherited first by his son Robert, who was murdered and then by his Grandson Robert II who fled the country in 1717, having mortgaged the Hall to the hilt, leaving his wife to undo his mess selling off much of the land after his eventual death in 1729.

Joseph Wilson, a seemingly unscrupulous operated who told John the land was worthless! Joseph was arrested and sent to Derby Gaol in 1840 but he died before the trial began. The hall passed to his wife, then daughter and finally her son, Vaughan Radford in 1850. In 1912 Vaughan died but his heir had run off to Canada to seek his fortune in the Gold Rush, leaving his young family behind. As a result, the estate went to auction which brings us up to where we began last month. I would just like to say a big thank you to Graham and Heidi Oliver of Carnfield Hall for kindly showing Danielle around the property and providing much of the historical information and pictures.

Laven

Gemma Lavender of Lavender Dog Shop is delighted to announce that she has moved to new premises on Whimsy Way, Somercotes. Regular visitors have no need to worry as the business has taken the short journey by moving to the much larger premises next door. Gemma said “Pop along and meet our knowledgeable, friendly staff and talk to us about introducing your pets to the huge range of raw natural foods and treats we stock”. Moving to the larger premises means the store can now stock a much wider range of products including their popular raw and natural pet food. They also stock a wide range of other dog friendly products including leads, harnesses and coats, and even offer a free fitting service.

Some of the benefits of raw food are: • Better body odour • Can be fed to dogs, cats and ferrets • Ideal for pets with allergies • Encourages fussy eating pets • Concentrates energy • Glossy coat and softer fur • Reduced fur loss • Smaller poos equals less waste

All friendly, well behaved dogs large or small are welcome to pop in for a visit and chat, all they ask is that all four-legged friends are kept on their lead or harness whilst inside the store. The store is open 6 days a week Monday to Friday 10am – 5pm and Saturday 10am – 4pm and for latest information and offers head to their social media pages.

Rambles with RafFa lake and

5-mile circular walk from Watchwood via Calverton Colliery and Sansom Wood A mid-length walk which should take you and your dog around 2½ hours to complete. There are a couple of roads to walk alongside and cross please take care, especially crossing the A614. Most of the walk is on paths and trails, so it may be muddy and will require appropriate footwear. And, as always, please follow the countryside code.

We try and pick a particularly good walk for the Christmas edition as we know a lot of you like to take the opportunity to try somewhere different for a special walk at this time of year. We’re no different and have a tradition now of redoing one of the best walks of the year on Christmas Eve, before decamping to a good pub for some nice food and a few drinks with some good company, (furry and human ) This walk is definitely a contender for our Christmas outing. It begins at the Watchwood car park near Gravely Hollow. We head out, via the woods towards the site of the old Calverton Colliery, for some great views as we walk. From here we work back down through Watchwood to cross the A614 and loop back through Sansom Wood before making our way back to the start.

George has brought some Christmas spirit back from north of the border... which spirit it is I’ll let you decide PLUMBING, HEATING & GAS SERVICE

George hears tales of how some of our neighbours, from north of the Border, truly promote the spirit of Christmas

You’ll recall from your last edition of Voice Magazine how George had taken time out from listening to the outlandish and often bizarre thoughts of the general public and had gone to visit his old pal up in Drumnadrochit. Both George and his wife had a relaxing few days and were warmly and generously treated by Hamish and Morag MacDonald. This was no surprise to George as he knew that the old ‘music hall’ stereotype of Scots being tighter than a ........(go on, you can fill that in yourself!) was, from his experience, a total myth. However, he was left with second thoughts when Hamish gave an insight into some of the regulars in the bar of the Drumnadrochit Hotel. “See thon Wullie over there?” asked Hamish. “On 20th December last year, he told us that he’d just phoned his daughter Fiona, who was working for a homeless charity in London, to tell her that he’d had enough of her mother’s cruel behaviour and was going to divorce her in the New Year. Apparently, she got awfy emotional and said something like, ‘Ach Da, ye cannae dae that. No at this time ‘o year. Ah’ll pack a bag and get up there the morn. Dinnae dae anything till Ah get there!’ At the time, the bar, packed with Wullie’s friends, fell silent and looked at him in astonishment. “Yir no serious are ye?” asked Dougie the local postie.

Hamish took a drink before continuing. “See him, ower there? That’s Lachlan McDougall. He’s the only one of us lads never to get married. Apparently, he was once courting Ailsa Campbell she was a MacTavish back then - and, two days before Christmas one year, they were sitting on the banks of the Loch when she snuggled up to him, looked him in the eye and said, “Ah’ll gie ye a penny fir yir thoughts”.

Gardener’s Calendar

ARE YOU KEEPING WARM THIS WINTER?

We’re mostly heading towards the winter protection zone now in the garden. Time to bubble wrap container pots which can also go up on “feet” if there’s a risk of waterlogging. Cut roses in wind-exposed plots back to a third of their height to stop wind rock which damages roots. Create a grease layer – there’s loads of makes on the market – to prevent wingless female fruit moths climbing fruit trees and laying their eggs in the branches and impacting on next year’s crop. Between now and February is a good time to shape and prune apple and pear trees – but not plums which are liable to crop damaging silver leaf damage if pruned at the wrong time of year.

GREAT OFFERS ON

Don’t worry overmuch about fungi appearing in beds or lawns. People sometimes fear they are signs of the dreaded honey fungus. But this destructive fungus appears at the base of affected plants and shrubs rather than randomly across a garden and you will probably have already spotted problems with the plant. In some cases bunches of honey coloured toadstools briefly pop up on infected stumps. But the plant will also be looking sick, particularly in the upper reaches as roots are killed off by the fungus. The most obvious sign is a white sheet of fine fungal growth between the wood and bark at ground level so you need to peel bark back there if you have suspicions. The only way to eradicate it is to heave the plant or bush out and destroy the roots and stump – don’t put it on the compost heap!

1: Place a plank (or something similar) across your main access point into the garden to prevent compacting of grass or beds when you’re walking across and working over the winter. 2: Don’t chuck spent compost from tubs – it makes a great mulch for beds 06/11/2018 18:16

Sometimes a story arises in football that has repercussions beyond the sport. Was Richard Keogh treated unfairly, if you think not then maybe you would argue the others players should have been punished a lot more severely? Here’s our Barry with his thoughts on the matter.

As usual with my monthly column, I get a note from the editor chasing me because I’m usually about a week over deadline. Luckily for me, and for her, it’s generated an extra few hours to write about a topic which has dominated the local media in recent weeks. On the evening of September 24, an incident happened which changed the lives, and careers of three Derby County players forever. Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence both crashed their motor vehicles on the A6 between Duffield and Allestree. In the back of Lawrence’s vehicle was Rams Club Captain Richard Keogh, who was knocked unconscious by the impact of the collision – he was also left in the car as the other two scarpered like scolded dogs. Now it’s captain Keogh who (at the time of writing) has been sacked by the club he served with distinction for seven years amid suggestions he refused to agree a new contract on reduced terms – his current one expires next summer, and he’s out injured for at least another year owing to the injuries sustained in the crash in which he was a passenger. I’m no employment lawyer, I’m merely a football hack giving his opinion on a situation which is rather bleak, and could have been much more serious than it’s turned out to be – and that’s not to trivialise a really bad situation. I do wonder had Keogh not been in his 30s, at the end of his contract and lacking any resale value, had the situation been handled differently? Tom Lawrence is a valuable asset while Mason Bennett deemed a talented youngster have been retained.

No More Painting

The whole fiasco has been a PR disaster for No Morecould Ladders Derby County, and I’m sure if Mel Morris turn the clock back a little while, he’d do so in Fascias a heartbeat. Probably predating spygate Soffits last season, on recollection. A team bonding exercise went badly wrong and a group of their players acted poorly, and since, things have been increasingly tough for the club – performances on the pitch haven’t helped matters. But to treat Keogh like they have done leaves a sour taste, he deserved better or at the very least, he deserved consistent treatment in line with the other pair, who will carry convictions in the eyes of the law. After all, he was only a passenger. Yes, he shouldn’t have clambered into Tom Lawrence’s car knowing copious amounts of alcohol had been consumed and yes, he probably should have taken his captain’s role more seriously in doing his best to ensure the situation didn’t arise – but that’s probably as far as it goes. Keogh wasn’t the driver, he wasn’t the one drinkdriving and he wasn’t the one that could have killed himself or others through his reprehensible behaviour. The other pair could have had blood on their hands, yet it is Keogh who has paid for the incident with his career. A bloke has lost his career because of the disgraceful behaviour of others, and while clearly far from innocent in his own part, you’d be surprised if this was the last we heard of it.
