Trafford Lowe
Started the business in Somercotes in 1956 and quickly became a loyal and trusted member of the community and have served the bereaved in the local area, as years passed Trafford was joined in business by Ray Bonsell. Ray worked with Trafford over many years and after Trafford passed away the business continued in Ray’s capable hands. In 2016 Ray was joined in the business by Barry Pritchard and his wife Yvonne. Barry being a third-generation funeral director himself, is pleased to be working with Ray in the continuation and heritage that has been set.
route to the resting place, they will do everything possible to honour your wishes and make sure everything is in place. As well as giving you all the advice and support you need, they offer a wide range of vehicle options. A fleet of Mercedes hearses and limousines, but also alternative vehicles such as the classic horse-drawn hearse, motorcycle hearse, VW Camper Van hearse; they will find the vehicle right for you and your loved one.
Trafford Lowe believe that trust and confidence are most important when their services are called upon during difficult times. They promise to provide you with the service, care and experience you deserve. Everything they do is based on the values that have made their business what it is today.
Catering –
In 2017 they moved from Quarry Road to the premises on Somercotes Hill and have now added an extra branch to the family on the High Street in Alfreton which opened on 2nd December 2019.
From the moment you call or step into the office their aim is to keep things as straightforward and stress free as possible. They will take care of all your requirements and choices, organising everything to save you any unnecessary worry ensuring the funeral will be a true celebration of the life of a loved one lost. They offer a complete in-house service, including flowers catering, orders of service and memorial jewellery. When they work with others, they only choose suppliers who meet their values and high standards.
Vehicles-
Planning your loved one’s last journey is important, and they’ll work closely with you to make it special. Whether you want to include a specific vehicle or take a particular
Many people find comfort in gathering after the funeral to share stories, look back on fond memories and celebrate the life of their loved one. If you’d like to hold a wake or funeral tea, they can help everything, from the planning the gathering and finding a suitable nearby venue, to providing a discreet, dignified catering service with experienced hotels and caterers - they’ll be here to help you manage it all. If you would like to gather in a place that holds special memories, they can arrange outside catering for you, or work with your venue to make sure that everything is in place.
Arranging a funeral –
Every funeral is as unique and special as the person they are for. The funeral should reflect the life they lived and the individual they were, the memories they made and the people who loved them. Trafford Lowe’s aim is to help you to do just that – planning every detail both ahead of the funeral and on the day itself. They won’t let anything affect the quality of their prices will always be fair, competitive
and transparent. They celebrate life in all its diversity and variety. That’s why they’re proud to serve all communities and why they’ll do everything they can to accommodate your wishes and requirements.
Child and baby funerals
They do not charge for a simple funeral for babies or children up to 16 years. However, depending on your wishes, there may be a charge for coffins, caskets or additional vehicles, as well as potential third party costs, but all of these will be kept to a minimum. Call them on 01773 602 593. Email them on office@traffordlowefuneralservices.co.uk Or visit them at one of their offices.

Reading a sequel can be a bit daunting. Especially when there’s been a 34 year gap between books and the original is as famous and highly regarded as Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. But fear not. The Testaments is a superb follow-up. Without giving anything away, it manages to give hope to a story which has seemed unremittingly bleak. And of course great glimpses into the workings of the crooked wood of humanity. Atwood has said that most of the inspiration for the story has been everything readers wrote to her about the original book, everything that we wanted to know about Gilead, everything that we thought Gilead reflected in the world. The book seems particularly relevant in this time of Me Too, Fake News and the frenetic pace of our lives and Atwood says the other part of her inspiration is the world we have been living in. As always she writes beautifully, jumping between three witness accounts which in the end begin to merge into one very satisfying ending. The questions about Gilead, about its place in the world and how it could exist in our world now make sense. A worthy Booker prize winner and a really good read.

Rock Out with Will Scott
Will Scott, who lives in Wessington, began playing the guitar at a very young age and it soon became apparent that he had real talent for the instrument. By the age of 14 years, he had already achieved Grade 4 Rock School assessment. During his time at the Ripley Academy he was identified as an aspiring guitar player and in his last year was awarded the Peter Harrison trophy, an award which is only given to exeptional music students. He went on to study at the Joseph Wright College in Derby, and at the same time he began tutoring other students in the art of guitar playing, it was at this stage he achieved the highest award possible for a Rock School student, a Grade 8 in the electric guitar.

Rambles with RafFa lake and
5-mile circular walk from South Wingfield via Wingfield Manor
His month we are bringing you a walk that originally came to us from the Pentrich and South Wingfield Revolution Group. We have adapted the walk slightly so have provided our own wording but if you want the original please visit www.pentrichrevolution.org.uk where there is a ton of interesting information about the revolution along with more walks. The walk begins in South Wingfield and takes you off uphill in the direction of Park Head before turning across country towards Fritchley making use of some excellent byways. The walk then loops round back towards South Wignfield, via Wingfield Manor.
A mid-length walk which should take you and your dog around 2½ hours to complete. There are a couple of roads to walk alongside and cross so please take care. Most of the walk is on paths and trails, so it may be muddy and will require appropriate footwear. And, as always, please follow the countryside code.

After some distance cross over a stile and then continue diagonal left to cross a field. At the far side of the field cross over a wooden footbridge and then a stile into another field. Lurcher
Hello friends, my name is Dancer and I am a long way from home with Santa and his sleigh :( I have been here at Jerry Greens for a while now, and am starting to wonder why no one has come forward to adopt me. I am a loveable, sweet natured girlie with a cheeky side to keep you smiling. I would love to find my forever family in a home with people who will buy me squeaky toys and lots of dog treats for the big day - and maybe even share some of their roast dinner with me! I can live with adults and would prefer to be the only pet for now. I would love a home with company.
To find out everything you need to know about Dancer please give the Notts team a call on 01623 792886.

Eat Well • Live Well • Feel Well Like most people starting a new health routine is on the list come the 1st of January. However, in order to make this a long-term commitment it’s important not to set large overbearing goals and instead set small achievable ones.
It’s also worthwhile enlisting a friend to support you on your journey. You are much more likely to stick to a plan and it gives you someone to celebrate your achievements with or provide further motivation when needed.
It’s fine to have an overall goal. In fact, it’s paramount to ensure that you have something to work towards. But like with any task, when you break it down into small and achievable sections it makes progress that much easier. Set a time and a plan for how you are going to achieve the first goal and then move onto the next goal. This is a great way to stay motivated without feeling overwhelmed.
And most importantly find ways to exercise that you enjoy. If you don’t like the treadmill, why not try classes? They are a great way to experience fitness variety and meet new people. For anyone completely new to exercise start small, little and often. That way you’ll build up your fitness and confidence at the same time.

Make some financial resolutions We have to admit to our trousers being a little tighter than we’d like thanks to over indulging during the festive season but like so many we’re starting 2020 with a list of resolutions. Whether we’re still on target with them in a couple of months, time will tell!
the tax year ending 2020, as you still have time to make the necessary changes. Don’t leave it too late to take advantage of these and other allowances you could be entitled to. It won’t be long before April is here so it’s best to plan now.
When it comes to new year resolutions Whatever your financial needs for the year though we do think this is an ideal time to also ahead, start 2020 by having a conversation take stock of finances. Taking some time out with us and let’s hit those targets full on! to identify what your financial goals are for both the next 12 months and longer term is essential. Are you on the best mortgage deal possible? Could your savings be better manged? Will your current pension planning really meet your needs in retirement? Do you have the right level of critical illness and life protection in place for your family?
As far as resolutions go reviewing finances may not be the most exciting but it could be life changing. Discuss what your financial aspirations are as a family and you could make a significant difference to your future. At Hampshire Hill we work with our clients to help them achieve their financial goals. The process begins with us working through some carefully selected questions so we can all agree on what their financial targets are. We then go away and come up with suggestions which are personally suited to their individual needs. It really is a highly tailored approach which starts with a simple conversation.
“Make 2020 the year you take control of your finances. It starts with a simple conversation and could put you on the road to prosperity” Richard Hampshire
P.S. Don’t forget that January 31st is the Now is also the time to consider whether you deadline for filing your self-assessment tax can make better use of your ISA allowance for return; you don’t want to be hit by a penalty! 40 Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

Mike’us sings M
A Touch Of Gloss
Another year and Mike is back with another fantastic and funny tale from the long suffering George. They make them fertile north of the border!
Decorators Of Distinction
Yet another of George’s tales from north of the Border
George, UCIP’s People’s Champion, came round to our house just before Christmas and confirmed that he has now fully recovered from his stress related illness and is looking forward to providing me with more of the, often surreal, suggestions that the good burghers of the district tell him will improve the quality of life for all. Look out for those during the coming months. In the meantime, he had one more story to tell me from his visit, a few months ago, to his old pal, Hamish MacDonald up in Drumnadrochit. Apparently, George and his amiable host had called in to the local hotel one afternoon for a ‘wee dram’ and found the place heaving with ‘well oiled’ men and women. It transpired that they had just that morning attended the funeral of Jessie McIntosh who, at the age of 85, had tragically died the previous week after being hit by a carelessly tossed caber at the Invermoriston Highland Games. Hamish recognised one of the late departed Jessie’s neighbours, a Mrs Jeannie MacAllister, and introduced George to her whilst he went over to the bar. Despite her clearly having had a drink (or two) – in fond memory of Jessie of course! – George was fascinated by wee Jeannie’s recollections of her neighbour’s full life. “She was 17 when she first got married. That was to Archie MacLennan. He was a hardworking, God fearing kind of a lad and they were very happy, with the union producing 8 children. Sadly, Archie’s boat capsized one day during a fierce Loch Ness squall.
There were six on board that day and all survived apart from young Archie. Jessie was heartbroken but was not one for wearing the ‘widow’s weeds’ for too long and married Finlay McFinlay, a crofter from Cannich, barely six months later. The community were pleased to see that Jessie had found happiness again so quickly and she was blessed with two pairs of twins as she and Finlay brought a further 6 ‘weans’ into the world. It was all going so well until the day that Mr McFinlay was charged in the back by Heather, his sole heilan’ coo. He was impaled on the coo’s horns and it was no consolation to Jessie when the paramedics assured her that Finlay ‘......would have died instantaneously.’ Those ‘widow’s weeds’ had to come out once more, but come the following April, Jessie was able to discard them again as she accepted a proposal of marriage from Fraser Mackenzie, a bachelor ghillie from the local laird’s estate. Jessie was once again, lucky in love, and this marriage lasted not only for 40 years, but produced another 7 little ones. Fraser, died only last year. Jessie was a naturally contented lady and a damn fine neighbour to me. Still, she’s at peace now and I’m thankful that she’s able to bring closure.” “Would that be to Archie, Finlay or Fraser in particular?” enquired George. “Ach no”, Jeannie replied, “Ah wiz thinking aboot her legs!”

This can seem like a daunting time of year for us gardeners, but there are things to do at a practical level – and of course you can start reading the plant catalogues to see what to try this year. Outside, remove old hellebore leaves so you can see the new growth and the bobbing flowers as they emerge. You can also prune rose bushes if you haven’t done so already. They’re still dormant so don’t mind the invasion. Cut just above a bud on a slant so rain doesn’t pool on the cut.
Alarm & CCTV Specialists • Full alarm system service £60 with 12 months call-out cover
If you do venture across grass, try to avoid doing so when it’s frosty as this can scorch and leave brown marks. Lawns can get waterlogged and compacted by rain right now, so if that’s the case, spike them and brush in sharp sand and compost to help the roots stay healthy.
• Brand new alarm systems from £450 fitted
Watch that pots under eaves or right against the house haven’t dried out or got compacted by rain dropping from roofs. Grit on the surface helps retain moisture and stops clumping.
• Older systems upgraded, faults fixed
r
• CCTV systems from £500 fitted • Any existing system adopted regardless who fitted it
Stripped branches of Christmas trees make good support sticks for the growing season or they can be shredded for mulch.

Houseplants may be suffering a bit with central heating which dries the air. Misting helps. Small misting bottles are available everywhere, you don’t need anything expensive.

COOPER’S CORNER The economic boost that Nottingham Forest’s ground redevelopment plans are clear but will it strengthen their hand when competing to return back to the top of the football pyramid? Here’s our Barry with his thoughts... Redevelopment of Nottingham Forest’s City Ground took a step closer recently after the club submitted plans to Rushcliffe Borough Council for approval. There will be various facets to the project which will see the whole ground improved over time and raised to a level not seen at Forest before, and it will transform the city in many ways. Owner Evangelos Marinakis has earmarked around £100m for the project which will start by knocking down the current Main Stand and constructing a brand new, 10,000 seat stand in its place to help the club create a ‘worldclass’ environment which they hope will see Premier League football before too long. Development of the City Ground has been needed for a couple of decades now, with the most recent addition coming ahead of Euro 96 when the Trent End was built, and the Main Stand, or Peter Taylor Stand as it was renamed a couple of years ago has been untouched since being rebuilt after the 1968 fire.
Rarely can I remember a time when one single person invested such huge sums of money into the city, and it reinforces Marinakis’, also the owner of Greek giants Olympiacos longterm commitment to both the club and area which at a time of sweeping cutbacks, can only be a positive. Not only will a brand new, state of the art venue attract more supporters, and potentially new arrivals in the dressing room, it will also have a positive impact on local businesses and the employment market. Numerous new jobs will be made available once the new stand, complete with museum, shop and upgraded facilities is finished, there’s also the ones generate in the construction of the stand, much of which will be done off-site given the City Ground’s challenging urban location. At last it feels like Forest off the pitch are moving in the pitch and 2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year, here’s hoping Sabri Lamouchi’s playing squad can follow suit.
It’s been well-documented that Forest have missed out on huge finances to their East Midlands’ rivals Derby County and Leicester City when it comes to hospitality income, and with the new Peter Taylor Stand, things are about to change – they’ll be able to compete.
