Eat Well • Live Well • Feel Well We are urgently seeking volunteers for our Befriending Service in the Derbyshire Dales & High Peak areas – particularly in the Hope Valley areas.

Like most people starting a new health routine is on the list come the 1st of January. However, in order to make this a long-term commitment it’s important not to set large overbearing goals and instead set small achievable ones.

It’s also worthwhile enlisting a friend to support you on your journey. You are much more likely to stick to a plan and it gives you someone to celebrate your achievements with or provide further motivation when needed.

Do you enjoy spending time with people?

It’s fine to have an overall goal. In fact, it’s paramount to ensure that you have something to work towards. But like with any task, when you break it down into small and achievable sections it makes progress that much easier. Set a time and a plan for how you are going to achieve the first goal and then move onto the next goal. This is a great way to stay motivated without feeling overwhelmed.

And most importantly find ways to exercise that you enjoy. If you don’t like the treadmill, why not try classes? They are a great way to experience fitness variety and meet new people. For anyone completely new to exercise start small, little and often. That way you’ll build up your fitness and confidence at the same time.

Do you have a few hours to spare? Just a couple of hours of your time could make a real difference to someone who is feeling isolated or lonely. Support and training will be provided by Age UK Derby & Derbyshire.

Say YES to a Healthier You with the 5 Ways to Wellbeing The New Year can feel a bit flat after all the excitement of Christmas with cold, dark days that seem to go on forever. It’s easy to want to stay indoors, curl up on the sofa and neglect our bodies and minds. But now is the time to take action! We Enter the Age of Metal The last article covered the Neolithic period, a time when our ancient ancestors were just beginning to form permanent settlements and create the stone circles and burial mounds we still see in evidence today. About 2000 to 2500 years BC, another influx of settlers from Europe began to arrive in Britain and they had developed one important technological advance – metal working, specifically bronze. Many of these new arrivals also brought with them a unique form of pottery, bell shaped pots archaeologists named ‘beakers’ which led to them being christened the ‘Beaker Folk’. DNA analysis of remains indicates that this particular wave of immigrants largely replaced the original inhabitants of these islands. The Beaker Folk were farmers and they formed settled communities up and down the UK, including in Derbyshire. In the Peak District there are signs of bronze age settlements at Swine Sty to the west of Big Moor and many other locations. Perhaps one of the most notable being at Mam Tor where there’s evidence of a fortified enclosure that was initiated during the bronze age and continued right into the iron age. Our bronze age ancestors continued the tradition of monument and megalith building which began in the Neolithic…who knows if they adopted the religious/spiritual practices of the existing populace or simply adopted the existing structures for their own beliefs? However, by around 1200 BC the practice of building stone circles seems to stop. Another thing they brought to Britain was the practice of individual burials, often with’ grave goods’ being placed with the body. Prior to this time it was more common for burial cairns to contain multiple remains (usually just the de-fleshed bones).

12

Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

Back to the reason this era is called the bronze age…the first use of metal! Bronze is an alloy of tin and copper and interestingly there’s evidence of prehistoric copper mining at Wetton – which although in Staffordshire is still in the Peak District. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons this region became home to the Beaker Folk? Lead mining also seems to have occurred in the area, as an axe made of lead was discovered at Mam Tor (not sure how useful that would have been though!). By the late bronze age our ancestors were producing beautifully crafted blades, axes and spear heads by pouring the molten metal into casts created from clay or stone moulds. They were living in fixed settlements or small villages in roundhouses made of wattle and daub with grass thatched roofs, growing crops and practicing animal husbandry. Fabric was being woven or knitted from wool and jewellery in the form of pins and brooches would have been used to fasten cloaks and capes. About 800 BC in the UK, the use of bronze was being replaced by iron, not because it is any stronger or more durable than bronze (contrary to popular opinion) but because it is actually easier to find iron ore than tin, which is needed in the production of bronze. And so we enter the Iron Age… These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. To find out more visit www.landgassociates.co.uk or contact Laura on 07736 351341

Book Review

Margaret Atwood – The Testaments

Reading a sequel can be a bit daunting. Especially when there’s been a 34 year gap between books and the original is as famous and highly regarded as Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. But fear not. The Testaments is a superb follow-up. Without giving anything away, it manages to give hope to a story which has seemed unremittingly bleak. And of course great glimpses into the workings of the crooked wood of humanity. Atwood has said that most of the inspiration for the story has been everything readers wrote to her about the original book, everything that we wanted to know about Gilead, everything that we thought Gilead reflected in the world. The book seems particularly relevant in this time of Me Too, Fake News and the frenetic pace of our lives and Atwood says the other part of her inspiration is the world we have been living in. As always she writes beautifully, jumping between three witness accounts which in the end begin to merge into one very satisfying ending. The questions about Gilead, about its place in the world and how it could exist in our world now make sense. A worthy Booker prize winner and a really good read.

So who do you think was the most successful in the race to succeed …the Tortoise or the Hare? Actually, they are both successful. If it had been a short sprint the Hare would have crossed the line first not the Tortoise. Here at Kip we have Tortoises and Hares and they are both successful but only if we get them into the correct ‘race’ for their thirst for knowledge.

The Hares, (averaging 2 year’s improvement in 2 terms) The Hares with specific gaps and problems can work on improving their understanding and building their confidence. This allows them to achieve their potential fast whilst raising their self-esteem. For those Hares currently working towards their SATs in May, the next few months are going to be a hard slog and increasingly stressful. Kip can provide tailor-made support to children for their learning needs and keep parents in the loop so they are confident of the outcomes as well. The speed of their growth can make a significant difference in the shorter term before the SAT’s Many of these Hares stay with us for the first term at their new high school. This move can be a challenge in a number of ways; their workload is increased and the much higher student numbers can be intimidating. An extra term at Kip allows us to provide them with transitional support into Year 7

The Tortoises, (stay for longer than 3 terms)

Some of our Tortoises start their SATs preparation with us a little earlier, in Year 5. They tend to have more areas to work on and need a little more time to build on their confidence and learning skills. When they go into Year 6 they already know that they have improved significantly because they will have been reassessed a number of times and their progress monitored. It is a huge thrill for us to see a child’s face light up when they’re told how many months or years they’ve improved since starting at Kip! By the time they approach the SATs exams, they feel confident and well prepared. Some of these Tortoises require additional support with learning skills and strategies as well as specific academic targets. These longer term learners benefit from the nurturing atmosphere at Kip and appreciate the opportunity to learn at their own speed. Slowly, slowly catchy monkey!

Whether your child needs to be a Hare or a Tortoise bring them along to Jo for a free assessment of where they actually are and where you would like them to be in a few months. Call Jo on 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for your child’s FREE assessment NOW!

Why Resin Should Be Your No 1 Choice? That's simple, it drains water so no more puddles, it's stronger than asphalt and is slip resistant making it safer in winter. It's resistant to weather conditions: doesn't soften in summer, freeze in winter or fade with sunlight.

Hope Valley Business Zoo Business Networking @HNBZ Networking

Do’s and Don’ts

Business owners may avoid networking for several reasons. Rigid, ‘must always bring referrals and never miss a session’ kind of events seem like hard work.

Do spend some time working on ‘your pitch’, usually 30-60 seconds is required.

Large yearly membership fees plus additional weekly meeting payments quickly add up and, if you’re just starting, out these can seem like just another unjustifiable expense. However, networking has changed yes, the ‘old style’ membership ones still exist but there are plenty of pay as you attend groups around and everyone who runs their own business should factor in attending meetings on a regular basis.

Do ensure that you mention exactly what you are looking for – e.g. the type of business or client you would like to meet. Do attend meetings regularly, dipping in and out won’t help you build relationships. Do refer business to people you network with – reciprocity is the name of the game! Do follow up with people – networking is not just about handing out business cards. Don’t launch straight into a sales pitch. Don’t expect results (i.e. sales) immediately, it could take several months Don’t speak to only one person or group – ensure you talk to as many other attendees as possible. Don’t GIVE UP

This can seem like a daunting time of year for us gardeners, but there are things to do at a practical level – and of course you can start reading the plant catalogues to see what to try this year. Outside, remove old hellebore leaves so you can see the new growth and the bobbing flowers as they emerge. You can also prune rose bushes if you haven’t done so already. They’re still dormant so don’t mind the invasion. Cut just above a bud on a slant so rain doesn’t pool on the cut.

ROADSWEEPING

If you do venture across grass, try to avoid doing so when it’s frosty as this can scorch and leave brown marks. Lawns can get waterlogged and compacted by rain right now, so if that’s the case, spike them and brush in sharp sand and compost to help the roots stay healthy.

ESTABLISHED OVER 25 YEARS

Watch that pots under eaves or right against the house haven’t dried out or got compacted by rain dropping from roofs. Grit on the surface helps retain moisture and stops clumping.

Our Services include:

Stripped branches of Christmas trees make good support sticks for the growing season or they can be shredded for mulch.

• Septic Tank Emptying & Repairs • • • • •

TOP TIP!

Houseplants may be suffering a bit with central heating which dries the air. Misting helps. Small misting bottles are available everywhere, you don’t need anything expensive.

The Wild Deer of the Peak District ….. Picking up the story of the Peak’s wild deer, this article looks at the recent spread. Excitingly, in the last few years they have been heading from the high moors to which they were introduced, downhill into Holmesfield, Dronfield, and Sheffield in the east, and Curbar, Calver, Eyam, and Grindleford in the west. Further north a feral herd established in the 1940s from the medieval chase at Wharncliffe, and over in the west around Buxton, the same happened with a herd at Wildboar Clough. Alongside the native parkland red deer are the beautiful fallow introduced from the Mediterranean firstly by the Romans and later by the Normans. This is another herd animal and well-suited to life in woodland or in ornamental parks. As a decorative species to show off to your neighbours Fallow tick the boxes as really pretty, often with white dappling, and in the case of the bucks, spectacular antlers too. Like reds the fallows have an autumn rut when males display against each other and build-up and defend breeding harems of does. The males get very worked up and have favoured trees or shrubs that they ‘stand’ at and thrash with their antlers plus muddy pools where they wallow. The males snort and grunt at each other as they ‘parallel walk’ side-by-side each weighing up their opponent to see whether it is worthwhile entering the contest.

Every so often the serious business begins and they noisily lock antlers and battle commences. Mostly the inferior male gives way and runs off, but serious injuries and fatalities can occur with both red and fallow.

Fallow deer are easy to spot at Chatsworth where they generally keep away from the bigger red deer. Down by the river close to the old mill is a good spot. They stay on the far side of the river away from the visiting hordes. However, there is a nearby ‘wild’ or at least long-term feral herd of black or ‘melanistic’ fallow deer. Originating as a medieval herd from the old deer park at Stanton-in-the-Peak, these are pretty common around Matlock Bath, Darley Dale, and further west. For more information check out www.ukeconet.org and also https://ianswalkonthewildside.wordpress.com Please do send in records, photographs, or video clips of deer in and around the area. I would love to hear from you!
