Slimming World Recipe Cheesy Potato and Ham Bake This is one of my favourite Slimming World recipes. It’s so simple to make and perfect for a family. It’s really versatile too - I often swap the leeks for some other cooked veggies such as broccoli and green beans. Serves: 4

Ready in: 1 Hour & 5 mins

Syns per serving: 6

1. Preheat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. 2. Boil the potatoes in a large pan for 10-12 minutes, adding the leeks for the final 2 minutes. 3. Drain well and transfer to a baking dish. 4. Add the ham and toss well. 5. Season the egg lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper and pour over the potato mixture. 6. Scatter over the cheese and sprinkle on a little more black pepper. 7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden and set. 8. Divide between 4 plates to serve.

Book Review

Richard Powers – The Overstory

A 600-page novel about trees – and nine people whose lives are intertwined with them – would seem an odd subject for rave reviews. But The Overstory, by American writer Richard Powers, is a stunner. It’s one of those rare books that changes the way you look at things around you and at a time when we are getting increasingly nervous about climate change, it’s right on the button. There’s mind boggling stuff, born out by scientific fact – that trees communicate, that they take care of each other, that they sense the presence of other nearby life and react to it, that they save resources in times of stress and warn their kin and send out signals to wasps to come and save them from attacks. They produce oxygen. They consume carbon dioxide, they’re at the heart of the things that make our planet work. And yet humans, the “superior” species, cuts them down, clears vast areas of forest to produce palm oil or for economic and housing development or even concretes over them to provide parking space - completely ignoring the affect this will have. But this isn’t simply a story for ecologists. It’s a tale told through people’s lives. It’s beautiful and brilliant and mind-opening, thoughtful and heart-breaking and it wears its encyclopaedic knowledge lightly, so it whizzes along. You can’t be bored by it. And despite the part that humankind plays in the plot, it is wonderfully generous to our flawed species, our foibles, but also our ability to be so much more. If you’re going to read one book this year, this is the one.

A Will is not enough: Why you should make your LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY now… Hopefully we all know the importance of making a suitable Will… it shows you care enough about what happens to your assets once you’ve died. But… shouldn’t you care just as much about keeping your assets and yourself safe while you are alive? If you are unable to manage your own affairs… a Will is not enough. The legal documents you need in place are called “Lasting Powers of Attorney”. They allow the people YOU choose now rather than someone appointed by the Court of Protection to deal with decisions in two key areas: your Property/Financial affairs and your Health/Welfare matters. There may come a time in your life when you are unable to manage your financial affairs or personal welfare, owing to some form of incapacity and you will need someone to act on your behalf. Even when we are young, we can find ourselves incapacitated owing to illness or injury and it can be invaluable having a trusted, reliable person who is able to manage your personal affairs and remove the anxiety of having unpaid bills, at a time when you most need peace of mind. Similarly, as we get older, the need for attorneys increases as we are more prone to illness and injuries. Sadly, sometimes people fall into the trap of thinking “I’ll get something sorted when I start feeling a bit iffy”… but an unexpected stroke, accident or illness can take anyone by surprise, regardless of their age or health.

Only by creating Lasting Powers of Attorney now ensures that if the worst were to happen, you can rest assured that both your financial affairs and personal welfare are in safe hands. It’s vital to understand that you cannot make a Lasting Power of Attorney once you’ve lost capacity – by then its too late and your family will face a lengthy and expensive court process to be able to deal with your affairs. •

Loss of mobility or illness can make it difficult to manage your affairs.

The prospect of unpaid bills can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety and delay someone’s recovery.

Even the young can encounter problems due to accident or illness.

Minor children could be taken into Care whilst Guardians are appointed.

An elderly relative losing capacity is difficult enough for loved ones to deal with, without the added worry that finances are becoming muddled.

This is information was provided by Haworth WardDrummond, owner of Egg & Nest Ltd. , a provider of professional estate planning services in accordance with the STEP Code of Conduct.

It’s not too late to make a Will...

Hello, I’m Haworth Ward-Drummond, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Jane Bowland we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

Making a basic Will Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney

Using Trusts to protect their assets Pre-paid Funeral Plans

Protecting your home for future generations We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the highest standards of conduct at all times.

All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

the Age of Iron From about 800 BC Britain entered the Iron Age – a period which ended in AD 43 when the Legions of Rome invaded these shores.. Evidence of Iron Age occupation is scattered right across the Peak District, with areas showing continuous occupation from the Bronze Age onwards.

on top of them. None of the skeletons show signs of trauma on their bones and it is assumed soft tissue injury (perhaps having their throats cut) was the cause of death.

Although we’d like to imagine our ancient ancestors living peaceful bucolic lives, in tune with nature, farming the land and getting on with the neighbours; recent evidence is proving that actually there was a good deal of violence around!

The bones of the adult and teenagers do show evidence of what is known as interrupted growth as a result of dietary stress and anaemia - possibly from a period of famine. Interestingly at around this period, the climate of the British Isles which had up until then been relatively warm and dry, became wetter and cooler. This change would have undoubtedly resulted in crop failures and thus famine conditions.

Early in the Iron Age it would appear that family groups lived on the equivalent of a small holding, perhaps with a couple of roundhouses (single roomed dwellings with a central fireplace, made from wattle and daub with a thatch roof). They would grow crops like spelt wheat, oats and barley, forage for fruit and berries and kept livestock like pigs, goats, sheep and cows. We would term this a subsistence living – they produced enough to feed themselves with a little surplus to trade. Later in the period we see people moving into hill forts – a fortified enclosure on high ground. In the Peak District we have two examples of such forts, at Mam Tor near Castleton and Fin Cop at Monsal Dale. Fin Cop seems to have been created in a hurry – probably in response to some threat, and indeed it’s the recent discovery of a number of skeletons in the ditch surrounding the fort that is leading archaeologist to reassess the ‘peaceful’ existence we once imagined. The skeletons so far found are those of women and children. Having been thrown into the ditch, stones from what was presumably a defensive wall were pushed

Perhaps the inhabitants of Fin Cop were ‘executed’ by invaders from other tribes, keen to take either their land or stored crops? When they weren’t fighting neighbouring groups, our ancestors would have had to work hard to support themselves and their families…they were people just like us, simply trying to survive. We know (from later Roman records) that both men and women wore close fitting woollen trousers, with long tunics of wool or linen worn belted and topped by woollen cloaks held at the shoulder by a broach or pin. The clothes were died bright colours, woven in plaids and stripes and the men had full beards. Next month – the Romans are coming! These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Declutter and Organise Your Life with Jo Cavalot and DottyMow Jo Cavalot of DottyMow (Declutter & Organise The Things You’re Most Overwhelmed With) is a decluttering expert – from sorting out a single kitchen cupboard through to helping you to restore order to an entire house. Services include full house clearances; managing the transition from living at home to moving into a care home; arranging for the selling and recycling of your surplus ‘stuff’; helping you to organise your home and/or workplace.

If you feel as if you are being suffocated by ‘too much stuff’, if your cupboards are overflowing, the wardrobe is fit to explode and you can’t find anything when you want it…then DottyMow can definitely help bring some order to your chaos. The pricing is simple and transparent, as one of her clients says, “I didn’t think money could buy peace of mind but it turns out it can.” With an extensive background in project management Jo can help you to organise your working life too. If your email inbox is full of unopened messages and you struggle to find the emails you actually need, Jo can help you put a simple structure in place for organising your inbox and keep it organised going forwards. Need organising? Then you need Jo Cavalot and DottyMow! www.dottymow.co.uk E:info@dottymow.co.uk T: 0114 400 0039

Hope Valley Business Zoo Business Networking @HNBZ Networking

Do’s and Don’ts

Business owners may avoid networking for several reasons. Rigid, ‘must always bring referrals and never miss a session’ kind of events seem like hard work.

Do spend some time working on ‘your pitch’, usually 30-60 seconds is required.

Large yearly membership fees plus additional weekly meeting payments quickly add up and, if you’re just starting, out these can seem like just another unjustifiable expense. However, networking has changed yes, the ‘old style’ membership ones still exist but there are plenty of pay as you attend groups around and everyone who runs their own business should factor in attending meetings on a regular basis.

Do ensure that you mention exactly what you are looking for – e.g. the type of business or client you would like to meet.

Do attend meetings regularly, dipping in and out won’t help you build relationships. Do refer business to people you network with – reciprocity is the name of the game! Do follow up with people – networking is not just about handing out business cards. Don’t launch straight into a sales pitch.

At this time of the year we take a breath to reflect on the year that has just gone and all that our charity has achieved. Helen’s Trust ethos is that everyone should have the opportunity and choice to die in the familiar surroundings of their home if that is their wish. The support that Helen’s Trust provides to the terminally ill is funded by the kind donations of individuals, community groups and local businesses. We are incredibly grateful for the support we receive and for all the help which comes in many forms from our loyal group of volunteers. In the past year we have helped almost 250 people and we have raised £147,680 through events and community fundraising. Some of our events are large such as the Winter Ball, the Chatsworth 10k, Movies in the Meadows, Race Night, fashion shows and our annual Golf Day. Some of our community events are smaller- the bake sales, coffee mornings, guided walks and car boot sales which we have throughout the year and are stocked with the donations we receive from our supporters. 6 pub quizzes and games nights have raised over £8000 and a team of talented florists raised almost £1000 creating beautiful Christmas wreaths. 18 local retailers and businesses hosted our collection boxes raising over £5000 from the generous donations of their customers. Not forgetting the 106 Regular Givers who have donated over £16,000... We held 12 craft workshops, 18 market stalls, 7 coffee mornings, 5 raffles and 16 crochet classes and we would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ on behalf of everyone at Helen’s Trust for the lovely donations which we received, the support of the community, the creativity of our crafts people, our prolific knitters and to everyone who stopped at one of our stalls and made a purchase. 2020 is going to be an amazing year for our charity- with more events than ever. Look out for our new Matlock Calling music festival in May and our 10k race in June is going to be bigger and better than ever. Keep an eye on our website which lists all of our upcoming events and remember we always need volunteers to help out in a variety of ways so please contact us on 01629 812759 if you would like to help us and join our friendly team.

Gardener’s Calendar

It may not be a very inviting idea, but turning over the soil in plant or veg beds while it’s still cold is a good plan. It exposes pests to frosts and birds and other predators and also helps kill off the roots of weeds. And just think of the exercise! You can start mulching, particularly where bulbs are growing, but do try to remove weeds first otherwise you are simply providing a better growing environment for them. If you want to get a head start on preparing your soil for veg growing you can warm up the soil by covering rows with fleece or polythene or individual cloches.

r

Indoors, if you have either a warm greenhouse or windowsill you can plant seeds of early starters such as pelargoniums or begonias. They take about two weeks to germinate so will be emerging around the time light levels start to improve. Fruit trees and canes can be planted now if the soil is not frozen, and this is your last chance to winter prune apples, pears and citrus trees. Prune newly planted raspberry canes back to twelve inches.

TOP TIP!

If you’re buying compost for growing seeds, get seed compost rather than an all-purpose version. It will contain the right nutrients and should be fine tilth and promote good drainage. 06/11/2018 18:16

In the Peak Mid Winter…

Bancroft

The carol goes ‘frosty winds made moan’ and certainly in the heart of the Peak District in the middle of winter that is truly the case. Sometimes recently we get periods of mild winter ‘unseasonal’ weather, but even so, and at night-time especially, it can get very cold indeed. This can be a challenging time for local wildlife and across the region local Winter Redwing at Chatsworth folk help out with birdfeeders and the like. Growing berry-bushes for wild berries can also help provide free bird-food. Small mammals like field mice also need winter-time berry supplements. For those who watch out for local wildlife this is also an exciting time as the birds that remain with us winterlong are joined by flocks migrating to us mostly from the far north and the east where temperatures Froggatt have long-since plummeted. Thrushes such as European blackbirds, redwings, and fieldfares arrive in good numbers and there may be the stunning waxwings too. Local reservoirs may build-up large flocks of seagulls – mostly lesser black-backed, blackheaded, and herring gulls, but with less common species too which in winter may include the pure

Go for a walk along the moorland fringe where the Pheasant Cock oakwoods give way to birch and you will see flocks of delicate lesser redpolls and maybe even the elusive mealy redpoll or arctic redpoll. The latter is almost pure white with bright scarlet markings on its head – a truly delightful little bird. Look and listen too for the siskin which will mingle in with redpoll flocks and is a cousin of the once-familiar but now sadly rather uncommon greenfinch. Close-up, the male siskin looks almost canary-like with bright yellow, green, and black markings. They will come to nut-feeders but love the birch ‘cones’ and their seeds. Similarly along riversides like the River Derwent near Grindleford or Hathersage, both siskin and redpoll feed on abundant alder seed-cones and are joined by lively, churring flocks of long-tailed tits.

white Iceland gull and the similar but massive glaucous gull. Also on the reservoirs it is worth watching out for rare grebes from Scandinavia and uncommon ducks such as the beautiful goldeneye. Today these may be joined by increasing numbers of the exotic, non-native the mandarin duck.

Above all, with cold winter weather, this is a great time to see nature up-close as in the countryside the birds and mammals are more approachable. The need to feed and to replenish precious bodyfat reserves combines with shorter day-lengths to make is essential that birds and mammals feed whilst they can and where they can. Enjoy!
