A strange sight seen again on Somerlea Park in Leabrooks

They were here last year and are returning again this year, what a sight for sore eyes they make, a group of FLAT GREEN LAWN BOWLERS known by the mythical name of the PHOENIX. Thanks to Ripley CVS, Grant funding was awarded to the Phoenix Bowls Club, by a panel of adjudicators, for 5 unemployed people to have the opportunity to join the Phoenix Bowls Club, with coaching provided absolutely free. These 5 places are open to any person in receipt of benefits over the age of 18. This grant allows The Phoenix Bowls Club to draw down a further 10 places if need be. So apply now for one of these unique places before they have all gone. The Committee welcome new players and are actively seeking them, from beginners to experienced league players, so come along and join our members. The people of Somercotes can once again sit in the park on a hot balmy summer’s evening and watch and enjoy this great game that is open to all, young and old alike.

To join the Phoenix Bowls Club or find out more telephone 01773 438 077 or visit our website www.phoenixbowlsclub.co

Slimming World Recipe Chicken Tikka Kebabs with Pitta Having a kebab always feels like a treat. So why not treat yourself with this fabulous Slimming World recipe. This dish is perfectly complemented with a tasty side salad. Serves: 4

Ready in: 25 minutes

Syns per serving: 7 (deduct 7 Syns if using Pitta Bread wholemeal as a healthy extra ‘b’ choice)

Method:

Ingredients:

1. Put the chicken in a freezer bag (or a glass or stainless-steel bowl) with the curry powder, yogurt and garlic. Season with salt and stir to combine.

• 8 skinless and boneless chicken thighs, visible fat removed, cut into bite-size pieces

2. Seal the bag or cover the bowl with cling film and marinate in the fridge for at least 1 hour or overnight. 3. For the salad, put the cucumber, radishes, celery and lettuce in a bowl. Mix together the yogurt and chopped coriander, season, then stir through the salad.

• 3 level tbsp tikka curry powder*

4. Preheat your grill to high. Lift the chicken out of the marinade, letting any excess drain off, then thread onto 4 metal skewers. Place on a baking tray lined with foil and grill for 10-12 minutes, turning halfway, or until the chicken is lightly charred and cooked through.

• 250g fat-free natural Greekstyle yogurt • 3 garlic cloves, crushed

5. Toast the pitta breads. Scatter the coriander sprigs over the chicken skewers and serve with 1 pitta bread per person with the salad and lemon wedges for squeezing over.

• 4 x 60g wholemeal pitta breads • Lemon wedges, to serve

MARVEL AT MOBILITY AHM Installations design specialist bathrooms to help at home For 20 years, AHM Installations have paved way for mobility in the home, helping both the elderly and people with additional needs to feel safer in the bathroom. Originally the focus was on mobility scooters and stairlifts when Julie and Simon Symcox started the company. It wasn’t long before customers began asking if they could also fit mobility bathrooms. With so many enquiries and a clear gap in the market, they decided to implement them into their business. The demand for mobility bathrooms grew so much that they quickly became AHM’s focal selling point. AHM Installations have also recently updated and rebranded their website which coincides with the expansion of the company and its services. The website shows various bathroom layouts with lovely photographs to give ideas to potential customers looking for comfort safety and style. Every customer receives a free bathroom survey and a no obligation quotation, as well as free advice on available government grants.

Specialists in bathroom adaptations for the elderly and disabled, AHM Installations can provide wet rooms, walk in showers, walk in baths, automatic toilets, raised toilets, grab rails and shower stools. AHM Installations pride themselves on the delivering a very professional service from start to finish and all their sales surveyors and fitters are very experienced in dealing with the most complex of bathing requirements. All share a common knowledge and expertise in dealing with the most vulnerable people and show great empathy which is much appreciated by our customers. All the fitters who work for the company are experienced in fitting mobility bathrooms and have a wealth of expertise in plumbing, flooring and joinery. Qualified electricians are also employed to carry all electrician work and testing. The company can also fit contemporary bathrooms if required. No matter what the needs maybe AHM can find the perfect solution from luxurious walk in baths to easy use walk in showers.

16

All bathrooms come with a 12-month warranty on the installation and products have between one to five years. AHM Installations are a member of BHTA (British Health Care Trades Association) and Check a Trade as trusted trades people. Customers can see reviews from existing customers from all over the country. Call for a FREE quote & survey on 01773 303201 or email info@ahminstallations.co.uk www.ahminstallations.co.uk

YOUR ALFRETON HIGH STREET

Welcome to...

Alfreton

Welcome to our brand spanking new Alfreton High Street Feature! This is something we have thought about doing for a long time. The Alfreton high street has a long and varied history but in recent times we feel it has been in need of some love. This feature will include a look back fondly on the past but at the same time the focus is very much on the here and now. We are lucky to have such a great variety of excellent shops and businesses in Alfreton. Maybe over the years we have taken it for granted and the temptation to head to out-of-town shopping centres or to shop online is understandable but I hope we never see the death of the town centre. It is the place where so many of our memories are formed from childhood to now and so forms a key part of our community identity. Imagine growing up in a world of bland shopping centres and retail parks. When you need that piece of expert advice where would you find that trusted person who relies on their reputation? And what about that quirky gift, unique clothing or unusual item for you home that you just can’t find in shopping chains? It’s not worth thinking about, so long live the high street and all who shop in it! I love looking at old photos, it stirs memories and not just physical one’s, but smells and sounds and sometimes if I’m really lucky I can almost feel a little bit of how it once felt to be in that place at that time. Our Danielle was lucky enough to have been shown around the Alfreton Heritage Centre by Secretary, John Rayson and he loaned us a few photographs to share with you. First up we have a couple of photos which date from the late 1980’s, around the time I was a child and remember coming down the High Street with my Granny May, who ‘always had her hat on’ and would often whip me out for a cream cake from the Naughty but Nice café. The top image looks down from the crossing of Rodgers Lane and Cressy Rd and the bottom image looks down from corner of Limes Avenue, with the King Alfred pub on the right. (There is even a legend that states that Alfreton is said to have been founded by King Alfred the Great.)

Thank you to all the advertisers who have got involved… it really couldn’t happen without you. Thank you to Alfreton and District Heritage Trust. We have more about them on page 44 but you can also check out their Facebook page, visit them online at alfretonanddistrictheritagetrust.wordpress.com, or in person at Alfreton Heritage Centre, Heritage Chapel, Rodgers Lane, Alfreton DE55 7FF between 2-4pm on Sundays. I would also like to say a huge thankyou to our own Danielle, who was instrumental in pulling the feature together, from concept to publication.

Memories of the past

EMPIRE THEATRE

The picture below is of the Empire Theatre, which opened in 1922 and was demolished in 1986 to make way for some new shops. To the left of the entrance is WM Clarke’s Shop and to the right was Fred Walkers Sweet Shop. I was asking my Dad exactly where the Theatre was. As well as telling me it was opposite the King Alfred pub and next door to where Costa Coffee is now he told me one of his early memories of being taken by school to see Charlton Heston and the ‘parting of the waves’ in the Ten Commandments.

Prepare your Child for Success! Since Kip McGrath Ripley and Alfreton opened last November, the centre’s been filling up with youngsters ranging from 6 years old to 15. “It gives me such pleasure to hear students - our Kipsters - already talking about how they’ve become more confident at school” says Claire Selby, centre director. By continuing to work part-time in local primary schools, Claire is able to connect the real-life demands of the classroom to the support that the Kip system offers youngsters, whether they need to improve their understanding of a subject or they want to push themselves further. She explains, “At Kip McGrath fully qualified

teachers plan and deliver an individualised program for each student. During their one hour 20 minute session, each student will complete computer and paper-based tasks as well as have an opportunity to work with the teacher. Children are incentivised to learn through being awarded points which they can exchange for treats so they love coming along each week!” To find out more, parents can easily book a free assessment for their child, either via the website, Facebook or by phone. SHOP LOCAL

Help your local community grow and prosper! Here at the Voice Magazine we believe massively in the SHOP LOCAL mantra. We started producing our magazines nearly 10 years ago, shortly after buying our first home in the area when we realised that there was no longer anywhere reliable you could turn to in order to find good local businesses. There is no doubt that the demand is there as we have experienced ourselves since setting up Voice magazines. And why not, our local businesses are fantastic! The variety and depth of trades and goods on offer is extensive and the quality of the service they provide is often better than further afield as they rely on their reputations. What’s more, the money we spend with them stays in our local economy with research showing that for every £10 we spend

in a local shop, up to an additional £50 goes back into the local economy by that money being spent and recirculated. So next time you’re thinking of popping out to the shops, or hiring a company for a service or trade, please take a moment to think, ‘can I get that from anyone local?’. The answers normally yes and you’ll probably be very glad you did.

A Tour of Alfreton Heritage Centre As I mentioned at the start of this feature that Danielle was fortunate enough to be given a tour of the Alfreton Heritage Centre which is maintained by the Alfreton and District Heritage Trust. We were so impressed we wanted to share

Curry’s Store next door. Outside the stores are Mr Brown, owner of the Café and Mr Thorpe the Bookmaker. (Wouldn’t you love to know what they were talking about?) Bill remembers Browns Market Café well and told us it was where ‘What’s Your Poison’ is now. In his words “I can still remember the famous savoury meat pies, the smell and the taste, mm mm mm”

a little with you. The Trust has been open for 26 years and has a wealth of information, knowledge, books, documents, photographs, maps and other resources all about Alfreton and the surrounding area, as can be seen in these pictures. As well as collecting an preserving a range of artefacts the Trust exists to educate people about the geography, history, natural history and architecture, environment and traditions of the area with the aim of promoting civic pride and continuing the traditions of the area. Part of the joy of visiting the Heritage Centre can bring is getting the chance to relive and revive old memories. One of the wonderful things a gentlemen called Bill Griffith’s shared with us was a couple of pictures and a memory. Below is a flyer and a photo which date back to 1955. In the photo is the Market Café, with the

Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and

6.5 mile circular from Newstead via Newstead Abbey and the Linby trail

We are back with another ‘classic walk’ this month. This walk originally feature in October 2015 but it has remained strong in our memories ever since so we are delighted to be able to feature it again, with many of you seeing it for the first time. The walk makes good use of the Linby Trail and the area around Newstead Abbey to offer beautiful scenery along with a good leg stretch and good terrrain, We were battered by Storm Dennis and previously Storm Ciara in the build-up to the magazine publication so I think we are due some nice spring weather in which to enjoy getting out and about with our furry friends again.

A moderate walk for you and your dog. This medium length walk should take around 2½ - 3 hours. There may be some sections of uneven terrain depending on the weather. There are a couple of road sections, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear for the conditions.

START: Car park adjacent to the Newstead Centre, Tilford Road, Newstead Village, NG15 0BS 1. Walk back through the car park entrance, turn left and then immediately right to cross over a level crossing. After the level crossing take the first road on the right. Sponsored by

Continue along the road until it bends sharp left. Continue around to the left, pass under a bridge pass by a metal gate and between two stone pillars. Continue straight for some distance and pass between two more stone pillars. Continue straight to eventually pass a pond and waterfall on your left.

Further on you will pass Newstead Abbey on your right and then a car park on your left. Continue straight and cross over a crossroads. After a short distance turn right onto a footpath. Continue into the woods along the path until reaching a tarmac road. Turn left along the road and continue straight for some distance. Upon reaching a large pair of metal gates directly in front of you, take a footpath to the right of the gates and continue straight with a tall hedge on your left. Continue to pass through a metal gate and then continue straight along a farm track for some distance until reaching a road. Turn right along the road signposted for ‘Village Centre’. After the road bends sharp right and then sharp left, turn immediately right along a tarmac lane signposted for ‘Linby’. Pass by a large wooden gate and then pass through a double metal gate. Just prior to reaching a second double metal gate, bear slightly left and pass through a large wooden gate into a churchyard, ignoring the large wooden gate on your left. After passing through the gate continue through the churchyard for a very short distance and then turn left through a gap in the fence onto a signposted footpath. Follow the path until passing through a gap in a hedge and then turn immediate right onto another footpath.

Continue to pass through a metal gate, over a stone bridge and pass by a pond on your left. Continue along the path until reaching a road. Turn right along the road into Linby village. 10. Pass the Horse and Groom pub on your right and continue along the road until reaching a roundabout. At the roundabout, turn right and join ‘Linby Trail’. 11. Continue along the trail for quite some distance until eventually passing a wooden signboard on your right reading ‘Linby Trail’. After the signboard, continue straight to cross over a bridge and then after a short distance bear left away from the trail and onto a playing field. 12. Head diagonally across the playing field towards the clubhouse building, near the clubhouse pass through a wooden gate onto a road. Turn left along the road and cross over a level crossing back to the car park.

JERRY GREEN DOG RESCUE We care for and rehome abandoned and unwanted dogs, and will never put a dog down unless it’s the only humane option. We receive no Government or National Lottery funding so are dependent on donations from the public.

We run five centres in the east of England, including your nearest one in Nottinghamshire at Warsop Lane, Blidworth, NG21 0PG. We are open 1:30pm to 4:00pm every day.

REGULAR GIVING

As you can imagine, our vet bills are very large, even for just the standard vet care we give every #RescueDog. For standard vet care alone, it costs us on average ÂŁ84 per dog, costing the charity ÂŁ43,000 every year, which is why your donations are so important for us đ&#x;?śđ&#x;?śđ&#x;?śđ&#x;?ś From as little as ÂŁ5 a month, you can help us to continue doing what we do and give our dogs the second chance they deserve. Set up a monthly donation here: https://buff.ly/2NMqRj1 #AdoptDontShop #SupportUs #VetCare.

SUPPORT RESCUE DOGS BY TRAINING YOUR OWN! Jerry Green Dog Rescue are able to help you with training your dog.

Shelley Wilks, the charities Deputy Chief Executive, said: “Training can make or break a dog’s chance to stay in a new home. We believe that with the right training and persistence, these behavioural issues can be resolved and a happy home life will soon follow. If you would like some support with your training, our highly skilled Enterprise Trainers are here to help. For training advice or if you would like to book onto one of their classes in Nottingham, contact Rachel:

Mike’us sings M

As Max Bygraves (and if you don’t know who he is/was, ask your grandma) once said...

Fings Ain’t Wot They Used to Be (Part 1)

Would you have ever thought that seemingly rationale human beings could become so devastated if they thought they had lost their phone? Did you think that the English language would see the introduction of more new words and phrases like OMG, BTW, 2nite, TX, LOL, GR8, B4N, BRB, BCNU, TMI etc... than at any time since the Norman Conquest? Be honest, no you didn’t! Well, can you imagine how the youngsters of today would have managed before mobile phones took over the world? In the ‘old days’ - i.e. any time before 1985! - we had to use either landlines or payphones. The former was generally found in a room or hallway with the handset attached by cord to the main unit. This meant that when you made or received a call you had limited freedom and often found your Mum listening in as you tried to impress your boy/girlfriend. Unlike today, you couldn’t just carry on the conversation for another hour in the bathroom. Not only that, you had your Dad in the background muttering, ”Don’t forget that it’s me that pays the bills in this house!” If you needed privacy, you had to put your coat on and go down the street to the nearest phone box. There were however, a number of problems with this option.

58

Would the box be vacant and even when it was, had it recently been used as a toilet? Would the phone be working? Did you have enough change? Could you remember the number? Besides all that, if there was no-one at the other end, you couldn’t just leave a message and would have to go home before repeating the entire process. Assuming that you had got into the box and had just begun an earnest intimate conversation with the love of your life, you could guarantee that there would soon be a knock on the phone box door. You’d look up to see someone outside. It was invariably a middle aged woman, with headscarf protecting her curlers hopping from one foot to another and mouthing something like “Will you be long? I’ve got to make an urgent appointment with my gynaecologist.” If you tried to ignore her and turn away, she’d move round the outside of the box and look you in the eye. I defy anyone to continue whispering sweet nothings to whoever is listening at the other end of the line under that sort of pressure. OK, many of us may look back nostalgically on our youth, but I reckon I’ve just reminded you of one way in which our lives have improved in the modern world. Besides, have you ever tried taking a ‘selfie’ from a phone booth? Whilst I’m in a nostalgic mood, there might just be a bit more reminiscing in April.

We should start getting enough warmth into the soil for spring growth to really take off round about now. You can plant summer bulbs such as lilies, gladioli and agapanthus, but remember that most like sun – the results won’t be good if they’re in shade. They should be planted two to three times their depth and at least one bulb’s width apart. Re-pot pelargoniums and fuchsias which you have overwintered and increase watering but don’t put them directly out into the garden for a couple of months. Top-dress containers by removing the top five centimetres (two inches) of compost and replace with new.

r

Cut cornus grown for winter colour right back to the base so it will produce again next year and cut buddleia back hard before the sap rises. Slugs love tender new growth. You can buy nematodes, a parasite which will kill them, from garden centres. They are watered into the soil once the temperature reaches 5°C and are safe to use where there are animals and children. Neither do they harm other forms of wildlife. Use (and empty daily well away from anyone’s garden!) scooped-out orange or grapefruit skins turned upside-down as traps. If growing slug-vulnerable seedlings try putting in a pot and cover with a cloche rather than directly into the soil and then transplant later. And if you really love hostas, also grow in pots.

TOP TIP!

Put plant supports in now so they train up where you want them to be rather than trying to force them in later. 06/11/2018 18:16

Look out for the Peak District Owls…

Across the Peak District, spring brings a flush of new growth of vegetation and a flurry of activity from birds, mammals, and other wildlife. Woods and hedges resound to the songs and calls of small birds, and there is a hum of bumblebees and honeybees. Woodland wildflowers burst into life, and around the heather moors and the limestone dales there is abundant evidence of nature stirring. Amid all Little Owl this wealth of activity, it is worth watching out for some of our most iconic and striking wild birds – the owls. Several of these gorgeous bird species are back in the Peak and doing rather well. Indeed, with talk of ‘rewilding’, a part of the idea is to reconstruct broken foodchains i.e. the loss of both birds of prey and larger carnivorous mammals. With a little help, nature is doing much of this itself and we have, for example, both otter and polecat back in the Peak. There is talk of bringing back the pine marten but the truth is that it never went away – at least not fully! This stunning member of the weasel family has hung on in the north-eastern part of the region. Several birds of prey have also returned or recovered in numbers, and the owls are Tawny Owl amongst them. Both barn owl and short-eared owl are now regularly seen in areas like the Eastern Moors estate for example. From the threshold of the Grouse Inn at Froggatt you have a chance of barn owls over the

wildflower meadows managed by the National Trust, and displaying shorteared owls over the nearby moorland edge. Breeding short-eared owls do vary year to year as they follow the numbers of their prey - the short-tailed voles. Increasingly Barn Owl though, I do get records sent in of barn owls, for example from a back-garden in Holmesfield or close by Owler Bar roundabout! Our most common owl is the surprisingly large tawny, a denizen of woods and parklands but equally at home hunting at dusk over moorland and bog. Formerly common and widespread, this is another bird on the cusp of a troubling decline so much so that the British Trust for Ornithology conducted a national survey last year.

Little Owl Finally, one of my favourites and easily overlooked, is the little owl or ‘Frenchie’ (so named because it is a non-native bird introduced here from France in the early 1900s). Look out for them on telegraph poles and around rocky areas on the moorland fringes; being tiny, they are easy to miss.
