Sauce & Brown was founded in 2014 by two friends Anthony and Andrew who had been working together in the fashion industry for many years before. They have been based at their HQ in Annesley since 2015. Why Sauce & Brown? Simple really, a quintessentially British product Brown Sauce, what is a sausage cob without it! Interestingly the recipe was created in Nottingham by a greengrocer back in 1896. What Makes Sauce & Brown Different? We only produce 100 items in each design and each one is individually riveted with its own number 1-100, once they’re gone, they’re gone! We like to think we offer a personal service both online and instore. Andrew go on tell me something interesting about you? I was once wined & dined by the Great Fashion Designer Azzedine Alaia. Blog to follow at some point. Anthony one interesting fact about yourself? I enjoy snowboarding, recently back from a trip to Austria where the views were out of this world. Lads where is Sauce & Brown going to be this time next year? We aim to continue investing in the business and this time next year HQ will be even bigger.
Why not pop in and have a brew with the lads! 138 Forest Road, Annesley Woodhouse NG17 9HH

Whether it’s cruising the Galapagos Islands in search of its world renowned finch’s, a sunrise safari across the Serengeti watching Lions roam, whale watching off the coast of California, visiting the turtle nesting sites in Costa Rica or seeing Komodo Dragons in their native Indonesia, there are many ways in which we incorporate wildlife into our travels now. With the spotlight on high welfare and sustainable travel it’s a great way to support local charities and businesses to ensure these amazing animals are kept safe and flourish in their natural surroundings for generations to come. All of the suppliers that I use are very aware of the need to ensure that they provide ethical tours and focus on the natural behaviours of the animals to give my clients an authentic experience without disturbing the animals regular routine. I work with award winning suppliers like Elephant Hills in Thailand, who not only rescue injured and orphaned elephants but support national and international projects to preserve elephant populations. They run projects with local children to ensure they are aware of the need to continue the conservation work and are actively making the camp as sustainable as possible with the reduction of single use plastic and a tree planting project to offset carbon emissions. They also have a strict non-riding policy, whilst you can interact with the elephants it’s on their terms and mostly observational. People are much more selective about the experience that they want from a wildlife encounter now more than ever and having the opportunity to support projects like this is part of what makes these holidays so unique. These are often exceptionally personal experiences that are unlikely to be repeated and so we must make them as special and memorable as possible. So next time you are thinking about holidays and you’re considering your options, don’t hesitate to get in touch on 01623 859150 / 07932 959752 or email me at donna.horner@travelcounsellors.com

COMMUNITY
FOCUS
Kirkby-In-Ashfield & surrounding area
ARMED FORCES & VETERANS BREAKFAST CLUB We speak to Mark Leek, founder of the ‘Kirkby-inAshfield Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club’ about how the first year has been and what they have planned for the future to help serving members, veterans and their families in the area. “The Breakfast Club was originally started to help target isolation. In a short period of time I realised more support was needed within the military community to tackle more than just isolation. We come across a multitude of mental health issues including PTSD. Mental health doesn’t only affect the serving member of the Armed Forces and Veterans but the people around them and supporting the families is a key aspect of what we do, for the families are on the front line.
The Breakfast Club is a place for serving members, veterans and members of their families to meet up once a month for breakfast and a brew, to get back into the familiar military environment, just as they remember it when they were serving in the armed forces. A safe space for them to talk about the past and meet new people. We had our 1 year anniversary in January 2020 with a regular breakfast meet with an extra on the side - a Kirkbyin-Ashfield Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club cake! We handed out awards to those that have contributed to the Breakfast Club by volunteering and to those that have given extra service to the military community. As most people are aware this year is a significant one marking 75 years since VE Day. For this anniversary we have combined our services alongside the Kirkby-inAshfield Royal British Legion branch to help the C.A.K.E (Community for Action and Kirkby Events) with their VE Party at the Festival Hall right here in Kirkby. There will be entertainment from The Blue Birds UK. Dance, fun, games and stalls. Tickets are only £3 and available on the C.A.K.E Facebook page and at the Festival Hall.
14
The Breakfast Club is expanding all the time with new members attending our events and joining the Facebook page. We are looking at other projects that will help the military community with events like hiking, survival weekends, camping and road trips. The most current project is horticultural therapy, after a meeting at Stanford Hall with the charity High Ground with Andrew Wright the Therapeutic Gardens Manager. We work side by side with charities and other organisations supporting our veterans and their families encouraging them to take part in the Breakfast Club and other events we hold. Making home visits, giving advice and support to both the vulnerable veteran and supporting the families, putting them together with 3rd parties that we know to support and help them with the next step forward with their mental health. We meet on every 3rd Saturday of the month, at The Duke of Wellington, doors open at 0900 normally ends around 1100 (1130). You only pay for your food, the brews are free! We are currently starting a new charity that will help people within the military community called ‘Military Community Network Group’. It will help with purchasing of food and funding for utility bills as well as advisories and where applicable funding within housing, financing, healthcare, personal relationship, counselling and much more. By acting as a 3rd party, we can help those that are uncomfortable or not strong enough to help themselves with assisting with filling in relevant document for the above mentioned. We’re also looking to arrange trips and excursions for members so lots to look forward to!”

Vintage Rambles a with raf lake and F
6.5 mile circular from Newstead via Newstead Abbey and the Linby trail
We are back with another ‘classic walk’ this month. This walk originally feature in October 2015 but it has remained strong in our memories ever since so we are delighted to be able to feature it again, with many of you seeing it for the first time. The walk makes good use of the Linby Trail and the area around Newstead Abbey to offer beautiful scenery along with a good leg stretch and good terrrain, We were battered by Storm Dennis and previously Storm Ciara in the build-up to the magazine publication so I think we are due some nice spring weather in which to enjoy getting out and about with our furry friends again.
A moderate walk for you and your dog. This medium length walk should take around 2½ - 3 hours. There may be some sections of uneven terrain depending on the weather. There are a couple of road sections, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear for the conditions.
START: Car park adjacent to the Newstead Centre, Tilford Road, Newstead Village, NG15 0BS 1. Walk back through the car park entrance, turn left and then immediately right to cross over a level crossing. After the level crossing take the first road on the right.

2.
Continue along the road until it bends sharp left. Continue around to the left, pass under a bridge pass by a metal gate and between two stone pillars. Continue straight for some distance and pass between two more stone pillars. Continue straight to eventually pass a pond and waterfall on your left.

As you can imagine, our vet bills are very large, even for just the standard vet care we give every #RescueDog. For standard vet care alone, it costs us on average ÂŁ84 per dog, costing the charity ÂŁ43,000 every year, which is why your donations are so important for us đ&#x;?śđ&#x;?śđ&#x;?śđ&#x;?ś From as little as ÂŁ5 a month, you can help us to continue doing what we do and give our dogs the second chance they deserve. the Age of IronHistory Kirkby-In-Ashfield - a Short and the Work of the Heritage Centre With the former small mining town of Kirkby-in-Ashfield expanding rapidly and welcoming new residents from outside the area, this new regular feature from the Heritage Centre aims to not only share some knowledge about the town but also relive some wonderful memories from its past. Kirkby-in-Ashfield, a small former mining town which lies on the edge of the Erewash Valley, was originally a Danish settlement and translates to mean a ‘Church Town’. What we regard as ‘Kirkby-in-Ashfield’ now a days is actually a collection of small villages Old Kirkby, The Folly (formerly East Kirkby), Nuncargate and Kirkby Woodhouse. The area has two main churches; namely St Wilfrid’s, (which sadly burnt down in 1907 but was quickly re-built) and St Thomas’ built in the early 1900s. Kirkby is even mentioned in the Domesday Book! Kirkby Cross which stands at the junction of Church Street and Chapel Street is a Grade II listed momument. The exact date the Cross was erected is not known but the right to hold a market in the town was granted during the reign of Henry III (1216-1272). The upper section of the ‘cross’ is missing more than likely due to religious iconoclasm in the 16th or 17th centuries. Kirkby-in-Ashfield was once an important centre of coal mining and railways in Nottinghamshire, with three active coal mines and several railway junctions. The pits and the railways are now gone. The Mansfield and Pinxton railway came through Kirkby. Now the Robin Hood line goes from two stations within Kirkby connecting the town to the city of Nottingham.
Kirkby Heritage Centre is based in the town centre and provides a resource for local people to browse our collection of photographs, books and memorabilia. The centre has a unique collection of all things related to Kirkby-in-Ashfield. There is a database containing hundreds of photographs of mining, railway, textile industry and many buildings no longer around. There is also an extensive collection of school photos. If you’ve ever been in The Regent pub and looked at the large photographs on the walls... the majority of these were reproduced courtesy of the Heritage Centre! We are entirely volunteer run and rely on community funding and grants to continue the work we do. Our volunteers have an amazing depth of knowledge in local and also family history. Our aim is to link with other local organisations who support and befriend older people who may be lonely and in need of company. We often go out with displays. We also have a small group called Kirkby Living Memory Group which meets once a month at the Centre. We think it is important to keep the history and heritage alive for future generations. These articles are researched and written by Chris Kidger, a local resident and volunteer at Kirkby Heritage Centre. Photographs used with kind permission of the Heritage Centre and remain copyright of the Centre.
Want to find out more about Kirkby and the surrounding area’s history? Pop into the Heritage Centre on Kingsway for a brew and a warm welcome from the Centre volunteers.

In the ‘old days’ - i.e. any time before 1985! - we had to use either landlines or payphones. The former was generally found in a room or hallway with the handset attached by cord to the main unit. This meant that when you made or received a call you had limited freedom and often found your Mum listening in as you tried to impress your boy/girlfriend. Unlike today, you couldn’t just carry on the conversation for another hour in the bathroom. Not only that, you had your Dad in the background muttering, ”Don’t forget that it’s me that pays the bills in this house!” If you needed privacy, you had to put your coat on and go down the street to the nearest phone box. There were however, a number of problems with this option.
Would the box be vacant and even when it was, had it recently been used as a toilet? Would the phone be working? Did you have enough change? Could you remember the number? Besides all that, if there was no-one at the other end, you couldn’t just leave a message and would have to go home before repeating the entire process. Assuming that you had got into the box and had just begun an earnest intimate conversation with the love of your life, you could guarantee that there would soon be a knock on the phone box door. You’d look up to see someone outside. It was invariably a middle aged woman, with headscarf protecting her curlers hopping from one foot to another and mouthing something like “Will you be long? I’ve got to make an urgent appointment with my gynaecologist.” If you tried to ignore her and turn away, she’d move round the outside of the box and look you in the eye. I defy anyone to continue whispering sweet nothings to whoever is listening at the other end of the line under that sort of pressure. OK, many of us may look back nostalgically on our youth, but I reckon I’ve just reminded you of one way in which our lives have improved in the modern world. Besides, have you ever tried taking a ‘selfie’ from a phone booth? Whilst I’m in a nostalgic mood, there might just be a bit more reminiscing in April.

We should start getting enough warmth into the soil for spring growth to really take off round about now. You can plant summer bulbs such as lilies, gladioli and agapanthus, but remember that most like sun – the results won’t be good if they’re in shade. They should be planted two to three times their depth and at least one bulb’s width apart. Re-pot pelargoniums and fuchsias which you have overwintered and increase watering but don’t put them directly out into the garden for a couple of months. Top-dress containers by removing the top five centimetres (two inches) of compost and replace with new.
r
Cut cornus grown for winter colour right back to the base so it will produce again next year and cut buddleia back hard before the sap rises. Slugs love tender new growth. You can buy nematodes, a parasite which will kill them, from garden centres. They are watered into the soil once the temperature reaches 5°C and are safe to use where there are animals and children. Neither do they harm other forms of wildlife. Use (and empty daily well away from anyone’s garden!) scooped-out orange or grapefruit skins turned upside-down as traps. If growing slug-vulnerable seedlings try putting in a pot and cover with a cloche rather than directly into the soil and then transplant later. And if you really love hostas, also grow in pots.
