Making a Will is the only way to ensure that your wishes are carried out after your death. Without a Will, your property and assets will pass by the Law of Intestacy and this often leaves people who are important and special in your life with nothing. If you have children under the age of 18 a Will allows you to say who you would like to look after your children in the event of both parent’s death. If no person is named, the Courts will decide who should look after your children instead. If you are married, do not assume that your spouse will get everything. Under the Law of Intestacy, your children can have a right to part of your estate if it is large enough. Even if a Will was made before marriage, your Will could have been revoked by your marriage unless the Will stated it was to still stand. Also, a Will can help reduce the amount of
Inheritance Tax that might be payable on the value of your property and the money you leave behind to your spouse. If you are in an unmarried couple it is vital to make a Will as you do not have the same legal rights as couples who are married. Under the Law of Intestacy your partner would not receive anything from your estate. Also, it is common for a person to wish to benefit their current spouse but also ensure that their children from a previous relationship also benefit from their estate. Therefore, we can draft a Will to include certain trusts which allow for a spouse to live in your property for the rest of their life and then the property will pass to your children afterwards. There’s many different family situations and Wills are drafted to suit individual needs and circumstances. Please do not hesitate to contact us for a free consultation. Home visits are available by appointment.
We tell the story of the outbreak of the Bubonic Plague in our Peak District village, where over a third of the population died during 1665-1666. We explain about the black rats and the fleas that carried the disease, share how the families were affected and how the village recovered afterwards. We have two temporary exhibitions that will continue throughout 2020. The Impact of World War One on local families in Eyam, and the anniversary of the Boot and Shoemakers Strike in Eyam and Stoney Middleton that took place 101 years ago.

Having a kebab always feels like a treat. So why not treat yourself with this fabulous Slimming World recipe. This dish is perfectly complemented with a tasty side salad. Serves: 4
Ready in: 25 minutes
Syns per serving: 7 (deduct 7 Syns if using Pitta Bread wholemeal as a healthy extra ‘b’ choice)
Method: 1. Put the chicken in a freezer bag (or a glass or stainless-steel bowl) with the curry powder, yogurt and garlic. Season with salt and stir to combine. 2. Seal the bag or cover the bowl with cling film and marinate in the fridge for at least 1 hour or overnight. 3. For the salad, put the cucumber, radishes, celery and lettuce in a bowl. Mix together the yogurt and chopped coriander, season, then stir through the salad. 4. Preheat your grill to high. Lift the chicken out of the marinade, letting any excess drain off, then thread onto 4 metal skewers. Place on a baking tray lined with foil and grill for 10-12 minutes, turning halfway, or until the chicken is lightly charred and cooked through. 5. Toast the pitta breads. Scatter the coriander sprigs over the chicken skewers and serve with 1 pitta bread per person with the salad and lemon wedges for squeezing over.
Ingredients: • 8 skinless and boneless chicken thighs, visible fat removed, cut into bite-size pieces • 3 level tbsp tikka curry powder* • 250g fat-free natural Greekstyle yogurt • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 4 x 60g wholemeal pitta breads • Lemon wedges, to serve

Book Review ‘Me’ – Elton John
Elton John has never claimed to aim for the understated so it’s not too surprising that his autobiography is called Me. He writes that the great thing about rock and roll is that someone like him, a chubby kid from Pinner in Essex named Reg, can be a star. Though to be fair to him, he’s written some brilliantly catchy stuff and as a performer he’s the real deal. And this story has got the lot. From his early days of having his songs rejected while he trailed round northern clubs playing two gigs a night as a pianist in bands that were going nowhere, to gold and platinum albums, friendships with Freddie Mercury, Rod Stewart Princess Di and Versace and bizarrely disco dancing with the Queen. And the memoir is not shy about his equally rackety personal life. Drugs, sex, gossip (the more scurrilous the better). Not for nothing was the film his husband David Furnish made about Elton called tantrums and tiaras. Me is a really funny and sometimes shocking tale. But the thing that stops this just being a parade of rock star memories and excess – and there is plenty of that - is his total brutal honesty about the bad bits of his life, the suicide attempts, the temper, the drug, booze, shopping and food addictions. And how he, just about, managed to survive it all and remain still standing, as the song goes. This isn’t a sanitized version of his life. It’s warts and all, but he emerges as a paid-up human being. Good stuff.

A Will is not enough: Why you should make your LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY now… Hopefully we all know the importance of making a suitable Will… it shows you care enough about what happens to your assets once you’ve died. But… shouldn’t you care just as much about keeping your assets and yourself safe while you are alive? If you are unable to manage your own affairs… a Will is not enough. The legal documents you need in place are called “Lasting Powers of Attorney”. They allow the people YOU choose now rather than someone appointed by the Court of Protection to deal with decisions in two key areas: your Property/Financial affairs and your Health/Welfare matters. There may come a time in your life when you are unable to manage your financial affairs or personal welfare, owing to some form of incapacity and you will need someone to act on your behalf. Even when we are young, we can find ourselves incapacitated owing to illness or injury and it can be invaluable having a trusted, reliable person who is able to manage your personal affairs and remove the anxiety of having unpaid bills, at a time when you most need peace of mind. Similarly, as we get older, the need for attorneys increases as we are more prone to illness and injuries. Sadly, sometimes people fall into the trap of thinking “I’ll get something sorted when I start feeling a bit iffy”… but an unexpected stroke, accident or illness can take anyone by surprise, regardless of their age or health.
Only by creating Lasting Powers of Attorney now ensures that if the worst were to happen, you can rest assured that both your financial affairs and personal welfare are in safe hands. It’s vital to understand that you cannot make a Lasting Power of Attorney once you’ve lost capacity – by then its too late and your family will face a lengthy and expensive court process to be able to deal with your affairs. •
Loss of mobility or illness can make it difficult to manage your affairs.
•
The prospect of unpaid bills can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety and delay someone’s recovery.
•
Even the young can encounter problems due to accident or illness.
•
Minor children could be taken into Care whilst Guardians are appointed.
•
An elderly relative losing capacity is difficult enough for loved ones to deal with, without the added worry that finances are becoming muddled.

What Did The Romans Ever Do For Us? The Romans first landed on the shores of Britain in 54/55BC but it was 43 AD before they finally sent a conquering force. By 69 AD the Romans finally reached the Peak District, after conquering and capturing resistant tribes along the way. They were drawn to the area, despite what must have to them seemed cold, wet and inhospitable terrain, by the plentiful sources of lead ore.
and then rebuilt in stone. It appears to have guarded a river crossing and parts of it are still visible today. From Navio the (Roman) roads went north west to a larger fort, Melandra near modern day Glossop and south to Buxton – known to the Roman’s as Aqua Arnemetiae.
The captured tribespeople were forced to take part in massive infrastructure improvements – aka road building – and as the famously straight roads were constructed, farmsteads grew up alongside to grow the crops required to feed an army and its workforce.
The warm spring waters (a constant 27.5° c) must have seemed like a gift from the gods to the Roman’s shivering in the chilly damp of the Peak District. Like the indigenous population, the invaders believed the warm spring waters to be sacred and named them Arnemetiae after a Celtic goddess. Pinching local deities was seen as a good way to ingratiate themselves!
Tracks of these roads are still apparent today, and we still use one of them, albeit now it now has tarmac in place of stones…the A515 south of Buxton.

Chesterfield Lutadorum
Rochester
Derby
There are several known occupation sites or forts within the area. Chesterfield or Castrafeld as the Roman’s called the town, at its height was thought to have been home to up to 1000 soldiers and their families, whilst two civilian settlements grew outside the walls. As the north of the country was finally subdued, Castrafelds necessity as a kind of mid-point staging post lessened and the fort was abandoned about 175 AD. Closer to home, tiny Brough in the heart of the Hope Valley was known as Navio and was the location for a fort built initially in wood
Pieces of fine pottery, glass and coins have been found in Buxton and it’s likely that the springs were utilised in much the same way as at the bath house in Aquae Sulis (Bath Spa). Although no trace of any buildings remain today, in 1695 lead covered timber resembling a cistern was unearthed around the area now known as The Crescent.
The eagle eyed may have noticed a place called Lutadorum on the small map above. We know the name from markings found on blocks of lead known as ‘pigs’ which indicate some kind of administrative centre. Although the exact location isn’t known, archaeologists think it is somewhere between Matlock and Wirksworth. The Roman Empire continued to grow and change, eventually adopting Christianity but by around the 3rd century their power was diminishing in the face of repeated ‘barbarian attacks’. Early in the 4th century virtually the entire Roman army was withdrawn from Britain, leaving the country ripe for attack by Germanic tribes… These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. C.H.Joinery Hope Valley Business Zoo Business Networking @HNBZ Networking
Do’s and Don’ts
Business owners may avoid networking for several reasons. Rigid, ‘must always bring referrals and never miss a session’ kind of events seem like hard work.
Do spend some time working on ‘your pitch’, usually 30-60 seconds is required.
Large yearly membership fees plus additional weekly meeting payments quickly add up and, if you’re just starting, out these can seem like just another unjustifiable expense. However, networking has changed yes, the ‘old style’ membership ones still exist but there are plenty of pay as you attend groups around and everyone who runs their own business should factor in attending meetings on a regular basis.
Do ensure that you mention exactly what you are looking for – e.g. the type of business or client you would like to meet. Do attend meetings regularly, dipping in and out won’t help you build relationships. Do refer business to people you network with – reciprocity is the name of the game!

Do follow up with people – networking is not just about handing out business cards. Don’t launch straight into a sales pitch. Don’t expect results (i.e. sales) immediately, it could take several months
Stand out from the crowd by advertising here!
Don’t speak to only one person or group – ensure you talk to as many other attendees as possible. Don’t GIVE UP

The answers go round the hive starting at the top “B” in a clockwise direction and the last letter of each answer is the first letter of the next answer eg 9 BEEBONY = BEE EBONY, there are no gaps between the words. Gardener’s Calendar
We should start getting enough warmth into the soil for spring growth to really take off round about now. You can plant summer bulbs such as lilies, gladioli and agapanthus, but remember that most like sun – the results won’t be good if they’re in shade. They should be planted two to three times their depth and at least one bulb’s width apart. Re-pot pelargoniums and fuchsias which you have overwintered and increase watering but don’t put them directly out into the garden for a couple of months. Top-dress containers by removing the top five centimetres (two inches) of compost and replace with new.
r
Cut cornus grown for winter colour right back to the base so it will produce again next year and cut buddleia back hard before the sap rises. Slugs love tender new growth. You can buy nematodes, a parasite which will kill them, from garden centres. They are watered into the soil once the temperature reaches 5°C and are safe to use where there are animals and children. Neither do they harm other forms of wildlife. Use (and empty daily well away from anyone’s garden!) scooped-out orange or grapefruit skins turned upside-down as traps. If growing slug-vulnerable seedlings try putting in a pot and cover with a cloche rather than directly into the soil and then transplant later. And if you really love hostas, also grow in pots.

Look out for the Peak District Owls…
Across the Peak District, spring brings a flush of new growth of vegetation and a flurry of activity from birds, mammals, and other wildlife. Woods and hedges resound to the songs and calls of small birds, and there is a hum of bumblebees and honeybees. Woodland wildflowers burst into life, and around the heather moors and the limestone dales there is abundant evidence of nature stirring. Amid all Little Owl this wealth of activity, it is worth watching out for some of our most iconic and striking wild birds – the owls. Several of these gorgeous bird species are back in the Peak and doing rather well. Indeed, with talk of ‘rewilding’, a part of the idea is to reconstruct broken foodchains i.e. the loss of both birds of prey and larger carnivorous mammals. With a little help, nature is doing much of this itself and we have, for example, both otter and polecat back in the Peak. There is talk of bringing back the pine marten but the truth is that it never went away – at least not fully! This stunning member of the weasel family has hung on in the north-eastern part of the region. Several birds of prey have also returned or recovered in numbers, and the owls are Tawny Owl amongst them. Both barn owl and short-eared owl are now regularly seen in areas like the Eastern Moors estate for example. From the threshold of the Grouse Inn at Froggatt you have a chance of barn owls over the
wildflower meadows managed by the National Trust, and displaying shorteared owls over the nearby moorland edge. Breeding short-eared owls do vary year to year as they follow the numbers of their prey - the short-tailed voles. Increasingly Barn Owl though, I do get records sent in of barn owls, for example from a back-garden in Holmesfield or close by Owler Bar roundabout! Our most common owl is the surprisingly large tawny, a denizen of woods and parklands but equally at home hunting at dusk over moorland and bog. Formerly common and widespread, this is another bird on the cusp of a troubling decline so much so that the British Trust for Ornithology conducted a national survey last year.
Little Owl Finally, one of my favourites and easily overlooked, is the little owl or ‘Frenchie’ (so named because it is a non-native bird introduced here from France in the early 1900s). Look out for them on telegraph poles and around rocky areas on the moorland fringes; being tiny, they are easy to miss.
