From the Editor Dear Readers, It is fair to say that this has not been the start to a new decade that anyone wanted. Each day brings a new challenge for our public services, our population, our parents and our businesses. In these unprecedented times, it’s hard to know what is next to be hit and where to turn for some solace. On a human level, I am simultaneously outraged and humbled by the daily acts of both selfishness and selflessness. It’s a stressful time, I get that but wandering out of supermarkets with arms-full of toilet rolls whilst sticking two fingers up at everyone else is ludicrous and alarming and says a lot about the person. Whereas, the lady who works at the Kirkby supermarket who saw a distressed elderly man, as there was no bread left and gave him hers from her personal shopping…at no charge (see our FB page for the story), is just heart-warming and reassuring. Humans are confusing and complex but… From a business point of view, it is worrying times. We are planning to carry on as much as normal as possible. We have taken all reasonable measures, including ensuring that our deliverers use disposable gloves. We think you’ll need something to read, if and when you are in quarantine and we have included more articles and information to do whilst you are at home. With the schools closing we’ve created some craft articles to do with the kids, some checklists to keep you sane and some articles reminding you that normalcy will resume! We should all be doing our best to help the more vulnerable, so why not pop a note through a
neighbour’s door with some contact details on and they can get in contact if you need to. It’s nice to know that there is someone you can reach out to. On that note, if you are a vulnerable person and you haven’t got a note through your door, drop us a call. All our phone lines will be up and running and we are willing and able to help where possible. Please spare a thought for all the small, local businesses in this magazine and do what you can. We rely on these businesses when times are good so let’s do our best to help to support them through the hard times. They are suffering so please, carry on phoning them and make a future booking, buy some gift vouchers so they can feed their families this week too, shout about how good they are when you do use them and make sure they survive this situation. With that in mind, we’ve set up a Voice in the Community Facebook page. I would love it if all our advertisers posted a video or a link to say what they are doing and that they are open for business. And I would love all our readers and supporters to post useful info and positive messages on it We are writing a line in the history books, so let’s make future generations proud, keep calm and carry on – we’ve got this!

Things to do!
We’re all having to change our usual ways of living in the current climate. But that doesn’t mean that we have to be bored - and to be honest most of us would relish the opportunity to have some time at home. So let us help inspire you with some ideas to keep busy! HAVE A SORT OUT - whether it’s your wardrobe, that dreaded cupbord you’ve been ignoring for years or even boxes in the loft from last time you moved! Charity stores will be grateful for the donations once we are all back out and about!
INDULGE IN SOME SELF CARE - a relaxing bubble bath, manicure and meditation - you’ve got time to treat yourself
GET LOST IN A GOOD BOOK (OR TWO) - with everything so digital these days, reconnect with a paper copy of a favourite or try something different. There’s bound to be a book lurking in your collection you’ve never got around to reading. BINGE ON A BOXSET - again whether it’s an old favourite or something totally new. Be entertained!
EXERCISE THE GREY MATTER - puzzles like crosswords, wordsearches and sudoku are great ways to keep your brain sharp.
KEEP A JOURNAL OR DIARY - whether its an online blog or a paper diary, write down your thoughts and what you’ve been doing. As well as good for mental health, it’s a great way to reconnect with writing. ORGANISE YOUR PHOTOS - most people will have biscuit tins or their computer drive. It’s a great time to relive great memories and organise photos into albums!
LEARN A NEW SKILL OR HOBBY - is there something you’ve been keen to learn but never had the time. With many resources online it’s easier than ever to find information or online learning resources.
READY, STEADY... COOK! Release your inner Delia Smith and cook up a storm in the kitchen. Whether that’s sweet treats or trying out a more complex recipe out of a cook book you’ve never had the time or inclination to create.
DELETE THOSE EMAILS - do you have 1,000,000,001 unread emails sat in your inbox? Dejunk and get them all filed into folders.
SOW YOUR SEEDS! It’s the very start of spring so a great time to get your garden sorted or plant some containers. Whether your preference is flowers or vegetables, growing your own is something to be proud of. Plus it’s great to get some fresh air!
NOT SO TAXING - if you are self employed why not get your tax return in order to avoid the January panic next year!
MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL... have a plan! Days can seem long and monotomous if you don’t have a routine or schedule. Make a list of things you would like to get done - that could be daily tasks as well as longer term projects. Split your days up into sections and fill each with things to do so you have a sort of timetable to keep you on track. If you have children to care for this will be really important to keep them entertained. Put the planner somewhere prominant so everyone knows what’s happening today or even later in the week.
My things to do...
KEEP MOVING - don’t forget to keep active! Pop on your favourite music and dance around the kitchen, find a workout DVD or practical some yoga. Just remember to build active time into your day.
DIG OUT A BOARD GAME - a great way to get the family together for fun! And let’s face it some of them like Monopoly can go on for a while!
REMEMBER TO CONNECT WITH OTHERS - pick up the phone, video call or if you are able to post a letter to friends / family not near you. The elderly inparticular will really appreciate you reaching out. MAKE TRAVEL PLANS - ok, ok so we aren’t going to be going on far flung holidays for a while but write your dream list of destinations to go in the future.

Angles and Peaks By about AD 410 the Roman legions had vacated the UK and it wasn’t long before the Angles and the Saxons of north-western Germany, and the Jutes from southern Denmark began to invade these shores.. For most of the 5th century it is believed that the Celtic tribes who occupied the Peak District before, during and immediately after Roman occupation continued to do so. The 6th century saw some dramatic changes though. There was a period of severe climate disruption around 545 AD perhaps caused by dust thrown into the air from violent volcanic activity, or even a comet impact. Agriculture would have been affected by the cooling temperature which could have led to famine and then to cap it all, a virulent strain of the bubonic plague swept through Europe and the UK. We don’t know for sure but seems the Celtic population of the area was particularly hard hit by the combination of famine and plague, because by AD 600 an invading band of Angles (we’ll refer to them as ‘Anglo Saxons’ from now on) appears to completely ‘take over’ the area. This group were called the “Pecsaetan” and they gave their name to the area as a whole. Little trace of Celtic place names remain in this area – except for the occasional occurrence of ‘eccles’ meaning church. The Anglo Saxons brought pagan beliefs with them. This is in contrast to most of the European mainland where the Christian beliefs of the later Roman period persisted. The Anglo Saxon leaders were buried in ‘barrows’ and there’s a line of those running from Buxton to Ashbourne. Christianity became dominant again in the 7th century but the local Anglo Saxons apparently preferred to appease ‘both sides’! There is a cross in Eyam churchyard for example which depicts a lamb, a symbol which is both Pagan and Christian…
The towns of Bakewell, Tideswell and Eyam were all founded during the Anglo Saxon period. Anglo Saxons divided the UK into four separate kingdoms East Anglia, Wessex, Northumbria, and Mercia, the latter included the Peak District. By the end of the 8th century raiders from Scandinavia were harassing the shores of the UK…we know them generically as Vikings but they were actually from three distinct areas – Sweden and Denmark and Norway. The Peak District, by virtue of its location appears to have largely escaped the influx of Nordic invaders. There are a few place names such as Rowland, near Great Longstone which derives from the Norse words ra, meaning a roe or roe buck, landmark or boundary, and lundr meaning a small wood; and Flagg which comes from a Norse word meaning turf or sod. There is some research to show that Vikings may have seized the lead mines around Wirksworth from the monks of Repton Abbey as it’s been proven that English lead, ‘probably from Derbyshire’ ended up in a grave ship in Norway. Next up we see if the events of 1066 affected the Peak District. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. To find out more visit www.landgassociates.co.uk or contact Laura on 07736 351341

Book Review
Turmoil and terror in Tudor England. Sounds like Hilary Mantel’s latest prize-winner? Well actually it’s not; although it could be argued that C J Samson could give Ms Mantel a run for her money with Tombland, the latest story in the series based around Matthew Shardlake, a hunchback lawyer in one of the most torrid periods of English history. It’s 850 pages long, but absolutely engrossing, fact and fiction blended brilliantly to produce a book built on historical research – Mr Samson has been a historian and a lawyer in his time – but which is a pageturner you can’t wait to dive back into. This is a historical epic, with so much detail that you feel like you’re personally being absorbed into Tudor life. The plot has the running theme of a number of murders, but intertwined with that is the retelling of a true-life explosive rebellion by the peasantry which threatens the future of the country. This is the time, just after the death of Henry the Eighth, when England is sliding into war and economic collapse. As always, it’s the people at the bottom who suffer most, particularly when the Tudor gentry are milking the country dry. If you’ve read any of the Shardlake books before you’ll know that C J Samson is very good at immersing his readers in a compulsively fascinating story with very strong characterisation. If you haven’t read any, you’re in for a treat with this one.

A Derbyshire English Teacher’s Story... “I am a local GCSE English teacher. I have to tell you about Sophie who sat her GCSE Language and Literature exams last summer 2019. Sophie lacked confidence, was frustrated and confused. She was routinely getting 2s and 3s for her work but I always felt that Sophie was far better than she believed.” Sophie’s mum took her along to Kip McGrath for an assessment in September 2018 and they began work. “Sophie soon began to feel comfortable and to have a go at things she had been avoiding. Steadily her work improved. By Easter she was improving dramatically. It was lovely to see Sophie full of optimism as she went in to sit her GCSE exams in June.
And the final result?... Sophie thrilled us all by achieving a grade 5 in BOTH English Language and Literature!” Sophie’s mum said “It was rewarding to work with the team at Kip and see the difference we made together.” Well done Sophie! Does this situation sound familiar? Why not bring your child along to Jo at Kip for a FREE assessment and let them be the best at school that they can be. Keeping Kids Busy As we write this the majority of schools are still operating normally however given the uncertainty of where we are things are changing rapidly. If you find yourself in the situation of having your children at home, there are resources to help you get through it! It’s understandable that children are going to feel anxious about what is happening and the ongoing news coverage. And for most adults it’s a worrying time financially and managing to keep going as normally as possible. We need to keep in mind that even relatively small changes in routine can be very overwhelming for children so its crucial to try and portray this as an adventure to reassure them everything will be fine. There are lots of resources out there to help you plan and schedule, particularly if you are also trying to work from home as well as occupy youngsters. We’ve found this fab itinerary online of a sample daily routine which can be flexed to your own circumstances. We are pretty sure schools will, if it does come to closures, have arrangements for work children can do but below are some free online home schooling websites you can access to help. We will post ideas and share links to our own Voice Magazines social media pages for as long as this situation continues: www.tts-group.co.uk
www.scholastic.com/learnathome www.home-education.org.uk
www.twinkl.co.uk (offering some free resources) Tutoring company Kip McGrath can provide online tutoring for primary and secondary school age children. Contact them for more information: www.kipmcgrath.co.uk/online-tutoring If you have babies and toddlers check out social media as many activity providers are doing video sessions so you can still do things with your little one whilst classes are not running. Make sure you also take some time for yourself. This is very stressful time for parents and self care is so important.

Krafty Kids Stuck indoors and looking for some easy activities to keep the kids busy? Don’t worry as James (age 6), our resident ‘Krafty Kids Konsultant’, is at hand with some quick projects you can all try at home with the kids using stuff you have in your arts stash or around the house!
Fluffy Bu nny
Egg Carton Caterpillars
What you’ll need: • Card loo roll inner (!) • Paint • Black felt tip pen • Cotton wool balls • Glue • Decorations - if you want to!
What you’ll need: • Empty card egg carton • Green paint • Straw or pipe cleaner • Pencil or ball point pen • Decorations - you choose!
How to make it: • Take a clean loo roll or kitchen roll cardboard inner • Paint the inner with whatever colour you want to! • While you are waiting for the paint to dry, get some colourful card and cut out two identical thin oval shapes for the ears. • Using a different coloured piece of card cut out two slightly smaller ovals to the previous ones • Glue the smaller ovals in the centre of the larger ones • Next put a line of glue all around the edge of the front of your ear shapes and stick on little pieces of cotton wool • Stick the completed ears to your painted inner • Make your bunny face with felt pens and any decorations you choose, like googly eyes!
Fu nky Frog Door Hanger What you’ll need: • Thin card • White paper • Black felt tip pen • Glue & sticky tape • Things to trace around!
How to make it: • Take the empty egg carton and carefully cut the base cut longways down the middle (you don’t need the lid). • Take one of the sections and paint green all over. Leave to dry. • Using the pencil/pen make two small holes in one of the front sections of your egg carton shape for the caterpillar’s feelers. • Cut two sections of drinking straw or pipe cleaner (about 5cm each) and carefully push through the holes you just made. • Next to decorate! Get creative to decorate your caterpillar! Draw on or use googly eyes, then stick on shapes or use felt tips to make your caterpillar super funky!
James’ Room
How to make it: • Take a piece of card and cut three identical length strips for the arms and legs. One of these strips should be cut in half to make shorter lengths for the arms. Zig zag fold each of the strips. • Cut out feet and hand shapes like shown in the picture and stick one to the end of each arm/leg strip. • Trace around a teaplate and cut out to make the main body shape, then using a different colour cut out a slightly smaller circle. • Stick the smaller circle onto the larger one as shown. • Stick the arms and legs onto the body shape. • Draw an oval shape onto a piece of card and before cutting out draw on two small circles at the top for the eyes. • Trace and cut out two smaller circles on white paper for the eyes. Using a black felt pen draw on the eyes. Stick onto the face shape at the top. Draw on the nose and mouth. • Stick the head to the top of the body shape. • Take a length of string and attach to the top of the head ready to hang on your door! Why not write your name on frog’s tummy?
18
Fingerprint Sheep Card What you’ll need: • Colourful card • Paint • Black felt tip pen • Small plastic plate
How to make it: • Fold your piece of card in half • Put a small amount of white paint on the plastic plate • Dip your fingertip in the paint and then press onto the card to make a fingerprint • Repeat until you have created the body of the sheep • Using your thumb dipped in the paint make the sheep’s head with a thumbprint • When the paint is dry use the black felt tip to draw your sheep’s legs, eyes, nose and ears. • If you want to add some flowers to your card then use a different coloured paint using your fingertip to create the petals and middles of the flower. For any activity always remember to supervise children using scissors or do the cutting bit for them.

Gardener’s Calendar
So much to do in the garden this month. The possibility of frost means it’s too early really to think about putting out summer bedding, but daffs, tulips, heathers and winter pansies should still be providing plenty of colour so you can concentrate on the other stuff. After primroses have finished flowering is the time to lift and divide to create more for next year. Forsythia should be pruned back to strong young shoots once it’s flowered and you should trim winter flowering heather once it’s gone over to stop it getting too leggy.
r
The lawn will appreciate a high nitrogen fertiliser and being aerated with a fork to give the roots room to breathe. Cut on a high setting so you’re not pulling it out by the roots. Prick out seedlings, lifting from the base of the shoot. Pinch out the growing tips of fuchsias and sweet peas to encourage bushy plants. Direct sow hardy annuals such as poppies and nigella into the soil now and start to harden off tender seedlings in the garden on a warm day. Bring back into warmer conditions at night. Cosmos, which are half hardy, can go out from the end of this month into May, so long as you have a sheltered spot.
TOP TIP!
Tie in climbing roses as horizontal as possible to encourage more side-shoots as they try to grow upwards, hence more flowers. Feed roses of all kind with fish blood and bone, hoeing it into the soil. 06/11/2018 18:16

Springtime brings the Woodland Flowers…
Across the Peak District, by the late spring and early summer, the ancient woodlands resound with birdsong and become resplendent with wild flowers such as bluebells, wood anemones, wood sorrel, and more. Damp and shady woods have the yellow lesser celandine and then the underappreciated but very pretty, golden saxifrage, and the ever-pungent wild garlic. The wild flowers tinge the entire woodland atmosphere Red Campion with a glorious ‘garlic’ fragrance. However, if you do not like garlic then best avoid! Our oak and bluebell woods with an understory of holly and hazel are famous for their sweet-smelling bluebells and the blue haze that carpets some of these former coppice woods. These are the spring or ‘vernal’ flowers evolved to burst through into bloom during the window of opportunity, before the oak Wild Garlic canopy closes and blots out the sun. By the later summer, the woodland floor is often in dense shade and the ground may also be parched; conditions that lead to many flowers finishing early and dying back. Never fear though, they will return next year.
Bluebell
The woodland flora follows a regular pattern each year with the first up being lesser celandines, followed by the beautiful wood anemones, and then bluebells, the brilliant white greater stitchwort, and garlic, with saxifrage, wood sorrel, and yellow archangel. The latter is so-called because its yellow flowers with splayed-
out petals looks like the figure of a heavenly ‘archangel’. Later in the summer come the under-stated woodland orchid, the common helleborine, the glorious red campion, and of Sorrel course the climbing stems of fragrant honeysuckle. These are good flowers to watch along a sunny woodland edge in late summer just in case there is a passing hawk moth drawn by the heavy honeysuckle scent. In years to come, expect the climbing woodland flowers to include wild clematis or old man’s beard, but so far, this is still rather uncommon in the Peak – but it is spreading. Clematis is a southern plant that has moved northwards with climate-change warming, and a timely marker of bigger changes afoot. By later summer, the woods will be quieter in terms of singing birds but full of recently fledged youngsters of many species. Groups of blue tits, great tits, and long-tailed tits begin to form into flocks that range around a wide Yellow Archangel area to forage for food. However, in the woodlands, there will be family groups of great spotted woodpeckers, and where open heath or grassland is nearby perhaps there will be green woodpeckers too. The latter thrive in woodlands with giant anthills of the rare hairy wood ant. Both green woodpeckers and jays seek out the ants’ nests. Not only do they hoover Anemone up the ant larvae but they entice the ants to spray their feathers with stinging formic acid, which appears to both control feather parasites and be an enjoyable experience too!
