From the Editor Thank you so much for taking heed and providing us with your lovely feedback regarding the April editions that went out mid-May. Truth be told, it has been an absolutely awful time for most people whether you have, or someone you know/love has contracted the virus, you are still in isolation at home, you’ve lost your job or you are struggling to keep the wheels on your business and *personal opinion/conjecture* -
us. This is our plan based on the current situation but as we all know…. it is subject to change depending on how everything develops. •
WE’VE CHANGED THE LAYOUT! Since the index was lost many years ago, I appreciate that it can sometimes be difficult to find who you need within the magazines. So, we’ve sectioned it up into 8 core sections which should make it easier to find people. Please, do feedback on this and I hope you like it as much as we do.
•
Delivery of the magazine is being undertaken with gloves currently. They are handled by as few people as possible and only whilst wearing gloves. All flyers are quarantined for at least 3 days prior to delivery. The protection of our distributors and readers is of the utmost importance to us.
WE ARE NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET. So thank you so much for doing all you can to help support our businesses, communities etc – it is appreciated during these difficult and stressful times. A couple of updates as I haven’t spoken with you all in ages! •
•
We had a couple of competitions on the go when we were rudely interrupted by Coronavirus. Just to let you know, the Wheelgate/Twinlakes competition will be drawn and the winner will be notified but we just need to talk with the establishment once they re-open again to confirm arrangements. We were also in the process of releasing our best (again, in my opinion!) competition ever, of tickets to the Y Not Festival. However, as I’m sure you are all aware, this has been cancelled this year but we are all hopeful that we can bring this great prize to you next year. Our delivery schedule has gone to pot!!! We will work back to being able to deliver at the beginning of the month again but it’s going to take us a few months, so please bear with
I think that’s it for now and hopefully we’ll see you in 4 weeks’ time(ish!) As is requisite of the new parlance “Stay Safe Everybody”
Emily x PS: Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

RIDDINGS PROVES POPULAR WITH LOCAL BUYERS
A great village location and stylish homes have proven to be a perfect combination for home buyers in the village of Riddings near Alfreton. National housebuilder Linden Homes has confirmed that it only has eight plots remaining at its development, The Riddings. Andrew Handslip, Head of Sales for Linden Homes East Midlands said: “We’re not surprised by the overwhelming demand for our Riddings development. “There is an excellent range of local amenities close by and homeowners at the development benefit from easy access to major cities, including Nottingham, Leicester, Derby and Sheffield. “We’ve seen a mixture of purchasers from first-time buyers looking to take their first steps onto the property ladder, to young families attracted to this picturesque and peaceful setting. “Alongside the success of the site, we are very proud to announce as part of Vistry Partnerships, we have achieved a five-star housebuilder status. 100% of our current residents at The Riddings say that they would recommend us to a friend or family member.” Homes at The Riddings are available to purchase with Help to Buy.* The scheme has made home ownership more attainable by enabling buyers to purchase a home
with a 5% deposit and 75% mortgage. The remaining 20% of the purchase price is provided as an equity loan which is interest free for the first five years of home ownership. The remaining 2 bedroom homes are offered fully carpeted and come with an upgraded kitchen with a fridge freezer, washing machine and dishwasher included. Linden Homes’ Marketing Suites are now open for 1-2-1 appointments from Thursdays - Mondays, 10am-5pm. LEGAL ADVICE:
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
Derrick Gent Funeral Directors of Pinxton
Are you a furloughed employee and worried you will be made redundant? Q: I’ve been on furlough during the lockdown and my employer is now telling me they are making me redundant. Can they legally do that? A: In theory yes. Q: What is the redundancy process they have to follow? A: Your employer has an obligation to meaningfully consult with you so you can expect to have at least one meeting depending on the circumstances to discuss the changes that they are planning and the reason why you are at risk of redundancy. At that meeting you will be able to ask how your employer will select people for redundancy and whether there are any ways that redundancies can be avoided – if you can think of any then you should raise this! One of the best ways of protecting yourself in the redundancy process is to participate in it, don’t just sit on the side-line and listen. At the end of the consultation process your employer will consider what has been discussed and notify you of their decision. You do have a right to appeal against their decision. (N.B The process will be different if your employer is making more than 20 redundancies within a 90 day period). Q: How much redundancy money will I be owed? A: This depends on how old you are, how long you have worked for your employer and your basic earnings before tax. You will need to be an employee and have worked continuously for your employer for at least 2 years to be entitled to a redundancy payment. You may also be entitled to more than the Statutory amount if your contracts offers an enhanced redundancy package.
Q: How quickly will I get my redundancy payment? A: There is no fixed period of time – usually it will be agreed between Employee and Employer but arguably should be on the date of the final salary payment.
Q: If I don’t think they are following the rules who do I go to for help? A: You can contact a Solicitor, or ACAS for advice. If you are made redundant, you have a right of appeal, and if that is not upheld then you could make a claim in the Employment Tribunal. But remember, the most effective advice you can take, to protect your job, is to engage in the process right at the start of the process - as opposed to when the decision has been made. Knowing how to play the system to protect you can often make a huge difference in whether you get selected for redundancy in the first place. Hopkins Solicitors offer a thorough redundancy consultation appointment for a fixed fee of £220+VAT to ensure you understand your rights in what can be a difficult and upsetting process. This consultation can take place over the phone and you will be provided with a written advice letter confirming what was discussed. If you would like to enquire about making an appointment, please ring us on 01623 468468.

Do you know a hero? I wish we could produce a magazine just thanking everyone one of you. There are not the words to express our gratitude fully except to say you are the best of us. During the Coronavirus pandemic there have been many people who have done amazing things to help others. From the front-line NHS staff and care workers, through the key workers who kept us safe, the shelves stocked and the bins collected to the people who, through small acts of kindness helped those who were vulnerable and maybe alone with shopping trips and other bits of help.
To continue to show our gratitude we would like to bring our readers a regular section in our magazine highlighting local people who go above and beyond to help others, especially during this difficult time. So here is our first ‘Local Super Heroes’, introduced by our Danielle, who herself is an absolute star!
If you know a Local Hero and I’m sure you do! PLEASE SEND US AN EMAIL OR GIVES US A CALL! We would love to tell everyone about them so they can inspire others! Tel: 01773 549 035

Local Super Heroes Emma and Beth at Selston Sarnies After I was placed on furlough at Voice Magazines back in March 2020, because of the coronavirus pandemic, I w a n t e d to do something to help the community. Then I saw a post on Facebook from Emma Olden who owns Selston sarnies looking for people to help with delivering food for the NHS & people within the local community that are vulnerable and struggling to get a meal. Emma had decided she was going to make it her mission to support as many people in the local area and those working for the NHS as she could. She set up a webpage where members of the public could donate money so she could feed NHS workers free of charge. She wanted to make sure that, after working long shifts during the coronavirus pandemic, there would be food waiting for the amazing staff on their breaks. This included some departments in Ripley, Kingsmill, Nottingham QMC & Nottingham City hospitals. She also provided meals to any worker of the NHS or emergency service that came to the shop with NHS ID cards or Blue badges. Not only that Emma has also set up a food bank outside her shop for people who are struggling, lots of local people have supported this, businesses, shops have donated food to help people in need.
Emma’s biggest support has been from Beth Colclough, six days a week Beth has been helping and supporting Emma, with the preparation of the meals, for both feeding the NHS and the vulnerable. Beth has given up her time and has been volunteering for Emma at Selston Sarnies since the beginning of the lockdown and is still volunteering to this current day. How I could I resist not to help this local super hero, I contacted Emma, and before long I was doing daily deliveries to Ripley Hospital, Kingsmill, and delivering in the community. During my time volunteering at Selston sarnies I’ve met some amazing people within the community that could not thank Emma, Beth and the whole of the Selston Sarnies enough. Emma and Beth are both truly amazing ladies I nominate them both as our local heroes for everything they have done to support the local community and NHS, I couldn’t have chosen a better team to be apart of.
Thank you Danielle Briggs Voice Magazines
Emma has had lots of support from lots of local people, suppling extra food, offering support for deliveries, peeling veg, doing the shopping for the shop,

The Walk begins at Vicar Waters Country Park, which is near Clipstone. The walk makes good use of the country park and Vicar Water Lake before venturing into Sherwood Forest for some, often welcome, shade during the summer months before heading back across country and back to the park.
7 mile circular walk from Vicar Waters Country Park, near Clipstone.

Continue along this footpath keeping a lake on your right. Continue until crossing over a wooden footbridge and then turn right to continue along a single track tarmac road keeping the lake on your right.
8.
Continue along the edge of the lake until reaching a car park. Staying with the edge of the lake pass through the car park and then over a small wooden footbridge. Immediately after the footbridge, ignore the path on the left and bear right staying with the edge of the lake.
9.
After a short distance at a second fork in the path, bear left along a path moving away from the lake. After a short distance follow the main path through a ‘S’ bend passing some picnic tables on your left Continue along this path for some distance keeping a wooden fence on your left.
10.
When the fence on your left ends, turn left off the main path onto a footpath. After a short distance and a sharp descent you will cross over a road bridge.

Immediately after the bridge pass by a metal gate. After, continue straight along a lane to pass by a ‘Sherwood Pines’ sign on your left and a number ‘8’ sign on your right. The lane climbs gently uphill. Upon reaching a fork in the lane bear right and now begin to climb more steeply. After a short distance you will come to a cross roads of lanes. Cross straight over and continue uphill. After walking for some distance you will come to another crossroads of lanes. At this point turn right and continue straight ahead, passing marker post 10 and for some
A longer walk for you and your dog, which should take around 2½-3 hours to complete. Although it’s most on paths and tracks there is a range of terrain, which can be muddy and uneven, so make sure you wear appropriate footwear. There are also a couple of sections of road, so please take plenty of care and, as always, follow the countryside code.
Start: Vicar Waters Country Park, Mansfield Road, Clipstone, Notts. NG21 9AA. 1.

A lot of people have said to me that they’re desperate to get out a go walking now that they have a bit more freedom. So, we’re back with another classic from the Rafa’s Ramble archive. I’ve picked a bit of a longer walk so you can make a full day of it and enjoy the awesome views, perhaps with a nice picnic stop.

Housing:
Bonding:
Rabbits require large amounts of space with grazing areas, access to outdoors and dry, well ventilated indoor areas meaning the usual hutches you can get from stores are usually not appropriate. Playhouses, sheds or even aviaries can be converted to be much more suitable accommodation for your bunnies. Rabbits need to be exposed to natural light to prevent vitamin D deficiency, so supplements or time outdoors needs to be factored into their daily lives, especially for house rabbits. Suitable housing is also necessary to prevent health problems such as upper or lower respiratory disease. Therefore avoiding small, dusty and dirty environments is vital while ensuring there is suitable weatherproofing to avoid damp.
Rabbits are highly social animals and due to being prey creatures, without a buddy to watch their back, a rabbit may never fully relax. However, bonding is a complicated procedure which can change for each pairing – therefore patience is key. A fast bonding can take as little as 2 weeks whereas more complicated ones can take as long as 3-4 months or, on rare occasions, 6 months to a year.
Feeding: The diet of a domestic rabbit should mainly consist of three things: • Hay/grass (timothy hay being the preferred type) • Rabbit pellets • Mixed leafy green vegetables/herbs Hay and grass should make up the majority of the rabbits diet (a minimum of a ball of hay the same size as the rabbit or larger a day) but a handful of leafy greens/herbs and a tablespoon per kg of ideal bodyweight of pellets will lead to a well balanced diet. Treats, vegetables and herbs can be given but must be given in moderation and new food items should be introduced separately – one new item per week to allow time for any intolerances to show. Long term changes to the rabbit’s diet should made slowly over the time of 4-6 weeks to allow their sensitive digestive system to adapt appropriately and reduce chances of an upset stomach.
It is important to note that both rabbits should be neutered before introducing to them to reduce hormonal influence. Bonding should be started a month after neutering to allow for enough hormones to leave the other rabbit interested enough without going overboard. A second cage will be needed near the original cage alongside neutral spaces for both rabbits to interact. Introductions should be gradual and closely observed at all times.
Vaccinations and Health Checks: Your rabbits should be fully vaccinated every year. There are two vaccinations available; a combination vaccination covering Myxo (myxomatosis) and RHD1 (rabbit haemorrhagic disease) and a single dose for RHD2 (a separate strain) – both are important and should be given 2 weeks apart from one another. The combination vaccination can be given from as young as 5 weeks old whereas the single dose vaccine has to be given from 10 weeks. These vaccines need to be repeated yearly to ensure full coverage. Frequent health checks with the vet will help to assess your rabbit’s general growth and care. It is important to monitor how much your rabbit eats, drinks and poos to make sure you can spot any potential problems early on. It is also a good idea to get your rabbit used to being handled and having their paws touched which will make health checks and nail clips generally easier and reduce stress levels during vet visits.

Post lockdown outings to local historic places Bit by bit our countryside is starting to open up again and while a visit to a historic house or a castle with a bite to eat might not be on the cards yet, organisations such as the National Trust and English Heritage are doing their bit by opening outdoor spaces and sites where possible along with some of their parks and gardens. Most coast and countryside parks are already open. Houses and castles are largely shut for now, but increasingly their grounds are being opened although advanced booking is needed for getting into them. But announcements of which places are open are being reviewed constantly so it’s worth checking websites to see if your favourite is on the list. Local gardens, pleasure grounds and parklands attached to properties which are currently open (advanced booking needed) include Hardwick Hall, Calke Abbey and Clumber Park and they’ve all got lots of space for walking around, although there may be

some changes to normal routes so that social distancing can be maintained. Toilets will be open and dogs on leads are welcome, though shops and cafes are not yet open.

These are all National Trust sites, but English Heritage is re-opening the first of theirs this month with a significant further number reopening in early July. English Heritage hope to have all sites open again by August. In all cases visitor numbers are currently being restricted to help keep everyone safe and visitors won’t be able to get in unless they have pre-booked. To find latest information on what’s open, whether it’s coast or countryside or parks and gardens - and to book visits to parks and gardens and Heritage sites - see the website for individual properties. If you’re looking for a book full of heart and hope in these strange times, then The Offing by Benjamin Myers may be the one for you. It’s a lovely generous story, set just after the second world war and telling how a 16-year-old lad, son of a miner, sets out to experience a different world to the awful one they’ve all just lived through. He walks slowly through the countryside towards the coast, longing to see the sea and swim, sleeping in barns and sheds or making a tent out of the sheet he’s brought, eating gifted food and windfalls. Then near one bay he follows a lane to its end and meets Dulcie, an eccentric old woman who lives alone in her secluded cottage. Dulcie of the nettle tea and gin cocktails. A clever, brave intelligent and big hearted woman from a different world in just about every way possible, Dulcie shows him immense kindness and friendship. And she offers this awkward boy a glimpse into how his life might change. He camps on her land then later in an old hut nearby which bit by bit over the next few months he repairs for her. Then her story also starts to emerge and it’s quite different to what the reader might think. It’s a book to read slowly. You can feel the sun and the sea of that perfect English summer and the delight of being able to swim in the freezing sea. Myers is always brilliant at describing landscape, but he makes you also long for the food Dulcie cooks and the simple casual life they lead. It’s also full of surprises and quite uplifting without being sentimental. Maybe just what we need.

The local authorities in North Yorkshire gave guidance to the farming community to help them fully understand social distancing with the specific aim of ensuring they knew what ‘keeping two metres apart’ meant. “To fully protect yourself came the advice, “for the time being, make sure that there is at least the space for nine squirrels, three spaniels, two ewes or one Land Rover between you and other human beings.

One lady wrote to the The Times on 18th May to say that during the lockdown, in an effort to look after her health, she would restrict herself to just the one alcoholic drink a day. She went on to say that by that time she had reached 23rd July 2022.

In the early days of this crisis, Derbyshire police got a lot of bad publicity through their use of drones to snoop on people having their State approved daily exercise. I heard that this so alarmed a couple in our village that they decided to dig a tunnel to try to get into Nottinghamshire where the police were more tolerant. Rumour has it that they succeeded and were able to enjoy a pleasant thirty minutes or so of freedom in Huthwaite.
These continue to be troubling times, but what has not come as a surprise in recent weeks is this nation’s capacity to either show its sense of humour or its capacity for bizarre behaviour in times of adversity. Here are a few examples I’ve come across that you may have missed.

A lady was on the radio complaining about having to stay at home. I don’t know how old she was but reckon she must have been at least 70 because her gripe was that following Government advice was effectively putting here under ‘house arrest’. “It’s not right she said, “I’ll go out if I want to. They can put me in prison if they like because no-one should mess about with my freedom! Like me, the presenter, had to suppress a chuckle at the irony of that statement. How many times over the past three months have you heard the word ‘unprecedented’? Well, I don’t know the number, but I can guarantee that you’ve probably heard it as many times recently as you have throughout the rest of your life. In fact, with complete confidence, I can state that the recent use of

For those lucky enough to have a garden or allotment, the past few weeks have meant we had somewhere to safely escape to, even if we didn’t have access to an awful lot of new stuff to put in it. For some of us there were plants we could either order online with a long wait or maybe get delivered by friendly neighbourhood garden centres and nurseries while we were locked down A combination of warm sunny weather (mostly) and few serious frosts over the spring period has meant everything, weeds and all, have been growing like mad, and early, so we’ve loads to be getting on with.

THINGS TO DO NOW:
Divide primulas, cowslips and primroses to get more plants next year. Deadhead, deadhead, deadhead. Don’t let plants think they’ve done their job by producing seed, this will greatly reduce flowering. Take all dead flowerheads off and in the case of sweetpeas just keep picking them. Their scent is amazing indoors. When deadheading roses take back to a leaf below to encourage more flowers. Remove old foliage from daffs now. Lift and store tulip bulbs if you want to keep them. Leave the foliage on when you lift then keep them warm and dry and they might give you another year or two – in fact some are being specially bred to do this now. Pinch out tips of fuchsias and bedding plants to make them bushy and produce more plants Tie in stems of climbing and rambling roses as horizontally as possible. This will encourage more flowers. Slow release pellets on the top inch of soil or compost is a good way to give your plants a boost over a long period.

Part of the argument for ‘rewilding’ is the need to reinstate broken ecological systems and especially what we call ‘trophic levels’. In reality this means encouraging or even reintroducing some of the predators and similar species ‘lost’ from the food-chain Common Buzzard through pesticides, habitat loss, and persecution. Here we are talking of the birds of prey like peregrine falcons, common buzzards, red kites, and the rest, and mammals such as polecats and pine martens. Many species have been lost over the last two hundred years or so, but remarkably there is a quiet revolution going on and in many places the Peak District is ‘self-rewilding’! It may be necessary to actually bring back and release some lost species but a surprising number have arrived by their own efforts. I was out at Chatsworth recently and in a single five-minute spell saw a pair of buzzards very close by, a peregrine stooping overhead, a raven cronking loudly amongst the great oak-trees, and then an osprey heading northwards along the line of the River Derwent. This was all quite remarkable, but then on another weekend day, this time at Froggatt, I had buzzards overhead, a peregrine go through, and ravens doing victory rolls over the Edge. Then a kestrel flew into the woodland with a sparrowhawk not far behind. Amongst the carnivorous mammals the otter is back, and so is the polecat, and in fact, the pine marten never went away – we have a small relict population. So in that case, we really need to better conserve what we have than reintroduce the species. Sometimes, as was the situation with red kites in mid-Wales for Sky Dancing example, some fresh blood may need
to be brought in to boost the breeding performance. The last British kites were reduced to fewer than twenty birds and then a solitary German female was introduced. Within just a few years her Garden Sparrowhawk genes were in every Welsh-born kite and the numbers leapt into the seventies and beyond. Maybe that is the answer for the pine martens; along with better protection (of course).

However, this revolution is happening all across the area and into back-gardens too as sparrowhawks in particular are on the up. Of course, this is not welcomed by everyone as these birds will take blue tits and other smaller birds from the garden and especially from the bird-table. But then, even birds of prey have to eat and nature is red in tooth and claw! Increasingly, sparrowhawks are finding our garden bird-tables and bird-feeders to provide very easy pickings. Furthermore, once the local hawks have ‘cased the joint’ then they seem to plan effective strategies to get the best results. Male sparrowhawks being relatively diminutive concentrate on the smaller song-birds, Common Buzzard whilst the females, bigger and heavier, target anything from a blackbird to a woodpigeon. Tactics then vary from a surprise hop over a fence or hedge to sitting stock still next the bird-feeder to pounce on unsuspecting prey. Do let me know what visits your garden!spray their feathers with stinging formic acid, which appears to both control feather parasites and be an enjoyable experience too!
