Hello, It’s wonderful to be back and creating a fresh new magazine. It was important to deliver our April edition at the end of May for our advertisers but it’s so nice to be able to create a brand-new magazine again! On that note, you may have noticed that we have changed the backgrounds and layout. We have introduced categorised sections, so it makes it heaps easier for you to navigate your way around the mag and search for the business or services you require. Its not exhaustive but it is a fresher look and a good starting point that we will improve upon as time goes by. I’ve popped in a dog walk this month, which is incredibly dear to my heart in this particular area of Derbyshire. I’m sure some of you know the walk well and you probably love it too but just in case you haven’t walked it yet here it is!! I also felt that I wanted to keep this just for our mags in the peaks for now because you guys are taking quite the hammering from tourists since the lockdown ease (and a bit before to be honest). I’ve spoken to quite a few people who are annoyed by it and I sympathise entirely!

We’ve also had a little move around of the delivery areas again in order to make way for our newest edition to the Rural family, which is our Darley Dale and surrounding villages edition. Hopefully, we will be as welcomed there as we have been here. Finally, I’m looking for some good news stories for August please. Whether it is a business, individuals, groups or whole communities that have pulled together and done something extraordinary, please let us write about it and share the joy. Contact us on 01629 364015 or info@ voicemagazines.co.uk. I look forward to hearing from you. See you next month,

Book Review

If you’re looking for a book full of heart and hope in these strange times, then The Offing by Benjamin Myers may be the one for you. It’s a lovely generous story, set just after the second world war and telling how a 16-year-old lad, son of a miner, sets out to experience a different world to the awful one they’ve all just lived through. He walks slowly through the countryside towards the coast, longing to see the sea and swim, sleeping in barns and sheds or making a tent out of the sheet he’s brought, eating gifted food and windfalls. Then near one bay he follows a lane to its end and meets Dulcie, an eccentric old woman who lives alone in her secluded cottage. Dulcie of the nettle tea and gin cocktails. A clever, brave intelligent and big hearted woman from a different world in just about every way possible, Dulcie shows him immense kindness and friendship. And she offers this awkward boy a glimpse into how his life might change. He camps on her land then later in an old hut nearby which bit by bit over the next few months he repairs for her. Then her story also starts to emerge and it’s quite different to what the reader might think. It’s a book to read slowly. You can feel the sun and the sea of that perfect English summer and the delight of being able to swim in the freezing sea. Myers is always brilliant at describing landscape, but he makes you also long for the food Dulcie cooks and the simple casual life they lead. It’s also full of surprises and quite uplifting without being sentimental. Maybe just what we need.

OTHER SERVICES The social distancing measures we have lived by for the last 3 months have given us all insight into what it is feels like when life is mostly spent at home without contact with the “outside world”. In these circumstances it is very easy to start feeling isolated and lonely; before long, loneliness and isolation can soon become “normal”. For many elderly people, even before this coronavirus, an isolated and lonely “normality” is a recurring risk; as health deteriorates or a person becomes frailer and less able to maintain independence, contact and interactions with other people and the outside world lessen. Adapting to and living with this is not easy; a multitude of emotions are experienced along the way and new challenges present themselves which often feel insurmountable. For almost 20 years, Age UK Derby & Derbyshire’s Befriending Service has existed to help people experiencing such challenges. We try to help people find ways to deal with struggles they encounter as they get older and in doing so, aim to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, maintain independence and individuality, and enjoy the later years of life as much as possible. Our Befriending service continues thanks to a superb team of volunteer Befrienders. Currently, sadly, no faceto-face visits are possible because of COVID-19 but we are continuing to support people over the ‘phone until we feel it is safe to resume visits again. A “usual” visit depends on a person’s individual circumstances and wishes; it may involve going to someone’s home for a chat and a game of scrabble, or going out somewhere to see a favourite local sight or for a cup of tea at a local garden centre café. At all times, making connections and encouraging enjoyment are key. When face-to-face visits are possible again, our service will need more Befrienders so we are calling out to people in the Bakewell, Matlock, Hope Valley and High Peak areas of Derbyshire who might like to join our team of friendly volunteers. To become a volunteer Befriender you don’t need to have any special skills other than being reliable, a good listener, have an open mind and friendly approach. Training and ongoing support are provided throughout. Any commitment you make is entirely dependent on your availability; it could be a couple of hours each week, every other week or once a month. You would be joining a dedicated team of existing volunteer befrienders who love what they do: “I find befriending so rewarding; it gives me a sense of purpose knowing that just a few hours a week of my time can brighten the life of someone who lives alone”.

The COVID-19 crisis has given many people an insight into what it feels like to be isolated or lonely. We are seeking volunteers to join our Befriending Service to support lonely or isolated elderly people in the north Derbyshire Dales & High Peak areas. Do you enjoy talking to people? Do you have a few hours to spare each week or each month? If so, you could make a real difference to someone’s enjoyment of life in their later years. Full training and support will be provided.

If you think you might like to become a Befriender and for further information If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the please contact 01433 620263 or befriending@ageukdd.org.uk Befriending Service on 01433 620 263 6or befriending@ageukdd.org.uk Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

DARLEY DALE FOOTBRIDGE PROJECT The original Darley Dale footbridge arrived back at the Rowsley South site from Midland Railway, Ripley, on 10 October 2010. We have submitted a small number of grant applications to help with the restoration, and to date, have been successful with one. This is specifically to fund the production of four missing cast iron finials for the landings. The delivery of these will give us a complete bridge “kit” again. The ex-Bamford signal box has been removed from the site of the bridge footings at Darley Dale, which was previously a physical obstacle to the bridge’s re-instatement. The missing support columns was both a financial and psychological problem. However, these have been remanufactured to the original Midland design. These are now on site at Rowsley South. In February 2016 the successors to Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Derby Museums Trust, kindly donated their sections of the bridge to the DWVRT. The trust has a great deal of respect for volunteers toiling for years to restore an item of derelict rolling stock or a building, but unfortunately the footbridge does not readily lend itself to this pattern of work. The bridge is a deceptively complex structure which, whilst over engineered, needs to be rebuilt from start to finish to a high standard to be safe for use. This means that when the money is raised, everything will be packed off to a contractor to assemble and then return later ready to be put up. The cost even includes erecting the whole bridge in their warehouse as a dummy run! Some volunteer input is required to remove some of the platework and a few rivets. This will save the contractors time (and our money) in the dismantling phase. The Derwent & Wye Valley Railway Trust will continue to promote this project as a flagship for the railway. It is a unique story of a redundant railway structure not only surviving being dismantled for use elsewhere, but then actually coming back to where it started. It will hugely enhance Darley Dale Station in appearance and improve the experience of staff and passengers there. With the completion of the bridge, we join the ranks of railways with experience of delivering medium sized projects and opens up the path for future infrastructure works, both within and outside of the trust. Timing is crucial; with the completion of the Up and Down platforms and the columns sat waiting, the bridge is the next natural step. The trust is very appreciative of the generous financial given by people to support the project. Further funding is needed to complete the footbridge. An expression of interest submitted to the National Lottery Heritage Fund has received a positive reception but further hurdles have to be cleared before a full application can be submitted. These are hand and the trust plans to progress the application in 2020. Contributions will be gratefully received and don’t forget, donations to DWVRT qualify for Gift Aid.

1066 – to the Black Death of 1349 On the 14th of October 1066 in Hastings on the south coast, the Norman-French army of William the Duke of Normandy fought the men of the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson. As we will all remember from our school history books – William’s Normans were victorious, thus leading to the Norman conquest of the UK and to his pseudonym…William the Conqueror. It was several years later before this latest set of invaders made it all the way to the Peak District but make it they did. One of William the Conquerors most favoured barons -William Peverel was at the forefront. He had been rewarded with a large amount of land (manors) in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire after the victory in Hastings, these became collectively known as “The Honours of Peverel” Peverel built a number of small forts following a series of attempted revolt in around 1080. On a grander scale, the ruins of Peveril Castle still stand proudly above Castleton to this day and he was also responsible for the first building at Bolsover Castle. The Domesday book, commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1085 was the largest scale survey of land and landholdings undertaken anywhere at that point in time. In it the northern part of the Peaks was reported as ‘waste’ (why we don’t know!) and the high ground was designated as a ‘Royal forest’. To the Normans ‘forest’ simply meant ‘unenclosed land’, not necessarily a heavily wooded area as per modern day usage. And it referred to an area of land reserved for the King and nobility to hunt. We still know part of that area today as Peak Forest. Originally ‘the forest’ ran from Goyt in the west to the Derwent in the east: Longdendale to the north with the southern boundary east-west through modern day Buxton.

Large areas in the southern Peak District came under the control of monasteries from the 11th century…not as monastic sites in themselves but as outlying farms known as ‘granges’. You can still find places all over the Peak district bearing the name Grange…e.g. Boosley Grange, Newton Grange, Gratton Grange. Farming back then was a communal activity, individuals would be allocated ‘strips’ of land belonging to the crown or a local ‘feudal’ lord which they could farm in return for their service. Land in the ‘peak forest’ was gradually cleared from the 12th century as the population grew – the climate was slightly milder during this period too meaning yields would probably be higher. The growth of agriculture and population in the region came to an abrupt halt in 1349 when a really virulent strain of the bubonic plague (black death) arrived in the area. Around one third of the population of England is believed to have died from the disease and this, coupled with a deterioration in the climate led to large areas of land in the Peak District going out of cultivation.

These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. To find out more visit www.landgassociates.co.uk or contact Laura on 07736 351341

Now that we are able to get back out there and enjoy the countryside we thought we would bring you one of our favourite walks in the Peak District. The views on this walk are incredible and Rafa and Flake absolutely love it! Normally I would recommend a pub or eating place but for now I would take a nice picnic - and don;t forge to take your rubbish home with you. The walk starts in the National Trust car park check out www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting/places-to-visit/car-parkstatus to make sure the car parks are staying open. From the car park the walk takes you out along Baslow Edge, past the Eagle Rock before descending into Baslow village. You then walk along the river Derwent before edging Calver and then up through Curbar and climbing back up to Curbar Edge.

5-mile circular walk from Curbar Edge Car park A mid-distance walk which should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. There may be some uneven and muddy terrain, so please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.

After crossing the bridge, turn right along a road keeping the river on your right. Continue along the road for some distance, passing all of the houses on your left and then continue into a no limits speed restriction zone. The road narrows and then begins to bend to the left. As the road bends to the left turn right to pass through a gate into a field along a signposted footpath.

7.

Pass by a marker post in the middle of the field and through a gap in a stone wall. Continue ahead to pass close by a telegraph pole and then continue with a stone wall on your right. A little further on pass through a wooden gate and continue with the stone wall on your right.

8.

Continue ahead until passing through a gap and then continue with the stone wall on your right. When the stone wall ends continue with a river on your right. After some distance pass through a gap and then immediately through a wooden gate to continue with the river on your right.

9.

Further on pass through another gap into a field and continue with the river on your right. At the far side of the field pass through a wooden gate, cross a river bridge and then continue along a footpath with the river on your right and houses on your left. Continue straight ahead, pass underneath a road bridge and then continue until reaching a road.

10. Cross the road and take the path to turn right and cross over a river bridge. After a short distance ignore the sharp turning left for ‘Dukes Drive’ and take the road on the left, going uphill called ‘Curbar Lane’. Continue for some distance going steep uphill and cross a crossroads with a red telephone box on your right to continue straight

ahead going uphill. 11. Continue for some distance until you have passed by all the houses. Eventually the road begins to bend to the left at this point continue straight ahead through a gap in a wall into a field along a signposted footpath. Continue steep uphill with a stone wall on your right. At the far side of the field, pass through a gap and then through a wooden gate to continue uphill. 12. After a short distance pass through a gap in a wall and then continue uphill until reaching some steps directly in front of you. Climb up the steps, pass through a gap and continue straight ahead. After some distance you will pass through a gap in a wall and onto a road. Turn immediately right just prior to reaching the road and continue going uphill on a footpath running parallel to the road. Continue to the top of the hill and the car park on your left.

“I am a local GCSE English teacher. I have to tell you about Sophie who sat her GCSE Language and Literature exams last summer 2019. Sophie lacked confidence, was frustrated and confused. She was routinely getting 2s and 3s for her work but I always felt that Sophie was far better than she believed.” Sophie’s mum took her along to Kip McGrath for an assessment in September 2018 and they began work. “Sophie soon began to feel comfortable and to have a go at things she had been avoiding. Steadily her work improved. By Easter she was improving dramatically. It was lovely to see Sophie full of optimism as she went in to sit her GCSE exams in June.

And the final result?... Sophie thrilled us all by achieving a grade 5 in BOTH English Language and Literature!” Sophie’s mum said “It was rewarding to work with the team at Kip and see the difference we made together.” Well done Sophie! Does this situation sound familiar? Why not bring your child along to Jo at Kip for a FREE assessment and let them be the best at school that they can be. Gardener’s Calendar

For those lucky enough to have a garden or allotment, the past few weeks have meant we had somewhere to safely escape to, even if we didn’t have access to an awful lot of new stuff to put in it. For some of us there were plants we could either order online with a long wait or maybe get delivered by friendly neighbourhood garden centres and nurseries while we were locked down A combination of warm sunny weather (mostly) and few serious frosts over the spring period has meant everything, weeds and all, have been growing like mad, and early, so we’ve loads to be getting on with.

r

THINGS TO DO NOW:

Divide primulas, cowslips and primroses to get more plants next year. Deadhead, deadhead, deadhead. Don’t let plants think they’ve done their job by producing seed, this will greatly reduce flowering. Take all dead flowerheads off and in the case of sweetpeas just keep picking them. Their scent is amazing indoors. When deadheading roses take back to a leaf below to encourage more flowers. Remove old foliage from daffs now. Lift and store tulip bulbs if you want to keep them. Leave the foliage on when you lift then keep them warm and dry and they might give you another year or two – in fact some are being specially bred to do this now. Pinch out tips of fuchsias and bedding plants to make them bushy and produce more plants Tie in stems of climbing and rambling roses as horizontally as possible. This will encourage more flowers. Slow release pellets on the top inch of soil or compost is a good way to give your plants a boost over a long period. 06/11/2018 18:16

The Hawks Return To the Peaks… Part of the argument for ‘rewilding’ is the need to reinstate broken ecological systems and especially what we call ‘trophic levels’. In reality this means encouraging or even reintroducing some of the predators and similar species ‘lost’ from the food-chain Common Buzzard through pesticides, habitat loss, and persecution. Here we are talking of the birds of prey like peregrine falcons, common buzzards, red kites, and the rest, and mammals such as polecats and pine martens. Many species have been lost over the last two hundred years or so, but remarkably there is a quiet revolution going on and in many places the Peak District is ‘self-rewilding’! It may be necessary to actually bring back and release some lost species but a surprising number have arrived by their own efforts. I was out at Chatsworth recently and in a single five-minute spell saw a pair of buzzards very close by, a peregrine stooping overhead, a raven cronking loudly amongst the great oak-trees, and then an osprey heading northwards along the line of the River Derwent. This was all quite remarkable, but then on another weekend day, this time at Froggatt, I had buzzards overhead, a peregrine go through, and ravens doing victory rolls over the Edge. Then a kestrel flew into the woodland with a sparrowhawk not far behind. Amongst the carnivorous mammals the otter is back, and so is the polecat, and in fact, the pine marten never went away – we have a small relict population. So in that case, we really need to better conserve what we have than reintroduce the species. Sometimes, as was the situation with red kites in mid-Wales for Sky Dancing example, some fresh blood may need

to be brought in to boost the breeding performance. The last British kites were reduced to fewer than twenty birds and then a solitary German female was introduced. Within just a few years her Garden Sparrowhawk genes were in every Welsh-born kite and the numbers leapt into the seventies and beyond. Maybe that is the answer for the pine martens; along with better protection (of course). However, this revolution is happening all across the area and into back-gardens too as sparrowhawks in particular are on the up. Of course, this is not welcomed by everyone as these birds will take blue tits and other smaller birds from the garden and especially from the bird-table. But then, even birds of prey have to eat and nature is red in tooth and claw! Increasingly, sparrowhawks are finding our garden bird-tables and bird-feeders to provide very easy pickings. Furthermore, once the local hawks have ‘cased the joint’ then they seem to plan effective strategies to get the best results. Male sparrowhawks being relatively diminutive concentrate on the smaller song-birds, Common Buzzard whilst the females, bigger and heavier, target anything from a blackbird to a woodpigeon. Tactics then vary from a surprise hop over a fence or hedge to sitting stock still next the bird-feeder to pounce on unsuspecting prey. Do let me know what visits your garden!spray their feathers with stinging formic acid, which appears to both control feather parasites and be an enjoyable experience too!
