HOME IMPROVEMENTS
From the Editor Anyone who knows me, is well versed in the fact that I have no concept of time!
and would never think of writing/phoning in such ‘concerns’!
I rarely get anywhere on time….I don’t do it on purpose, it’s just always been there. I remember being pulled up on it at secondary school. I was only about 13 and my form tutor – Dr Parry for those who may remember him – had been flagging it up to me and I mostly just brushed it off as it was only a few minutes but the minutes grew to 5mins and then 10mins. On this particular day when I was 10mins late, he asked me why I had such a problem with time, do I not have any clocks in my house and why I was late today? I quite confidently said “Sorry Dr Parry, it’s because all the clocks in my house have stopped!”. He just burst out laughing and told me to sit down.
We are working pretty hard to make the magazines even more readable and as such, if you have a local hero that you wish to shout about (we love those calls!!) or if you want to send in some articles about your community group, historical group or even recommend an advertiser, please get in contact, we really appreciate the feedback and contributions and we’re all pretty friendly and love hearing from you.
Anyway, there were many, many experiences like this throughout school and Uni (although at Uni you don’t get in trouble – you just have to do the “Excuse me, pardon me” embarrassment as you walk past people trying to get to the only seat left in the middle of a packed theatre whilst the tutor is lecturing!). As I find myself wondering what day it is and what part of the magazine cycle I am during this coronavirus business, boy, do I wish I was a better time keeper – it really would help me out no end! On another note, thanks for all the people that have taken the time to pass on lovely feedback about the mags – readers and advertisers alike! It has been hard work and words of encouragement are very much welcomed during these difficult times. I really should write a ‘grumblers list’….it would seriously entertain many of you with a sense of humour
In other news, I’m off to get my eyes tested in the coming weeks – it’s only 200 miles away, so it should be fine! Big thanks to Mandy at Travel Counsellors for sorting that – I won’t lie, I’m nervous about going anywhere as I’m sure you all are too but I need a break. Plus, I know if anything happens, Travel Counsellors sort it….Martin Lewis even said so! See you next time,

No Fault Divorce
The blame game is over! On the 25th of June 2020 a bill introducing “no fault” divorces in England and Wales received Royal Assent and was previously passed by an overwhelming 231 votes to 16 in the House of Commons. What is going to change and why. Q: How old is the current Divorce Law? A: The current divorce law was made in 1973 under the Matrimonial Causes Act. Yes, nearly 50 years ago! Q: Isn’t it about time for the Divorce Law to be updated? A: It most certainly is. The law can develop and very slowly too! Q: What in Divorce Law is going to change? A: Currently you can get a divorce if your marriage has “irretrievably broken down” supported by 5 facts, as they are known, of adultery, unreasonable behaviour, two- or fiveyears separation and desertion. Therefore, to get a divorce sooner rather than wait for 2 years or more, you must blame your spouse even if you don’t want to. The new law will remove “the facts” leaving the only ground for a divorce being that your marriage has “irretrievably broken down.” So, the element of blame is being removed. Q: Will this reduce arguments during a Divorce? A: It will. As solicitors we always try and help clients to reach a solution at the end of their marriage by agreement. By forcing a wife or a husband to start a divorce by blaming the other does not promote and conciliatory and/or constructive approach in achieving that aim. It can create ill feeling and the wellbeing of not just the parties but can impact on the wellbeing of any children too. Q: So, what is the new 6th box we can tick on the Divorce Petition as the reason or grounds for the divorce? A: Either the wife or the husband, or both unlike now, will be able to apply for a divorce on the sole basis of their marriage having “irretrievably broken down.” Q: I have read that this will mean everyone can get a “quickie” divorce. Is this right? A: No. You will have to wait 6 months before the divorce is made final. Q: So, no more Decree Nisi and Absolute? A: Correct. They will be replaced by “Conditional Order” and “Final Order.” Q: Will this mean a divorce will be cheaper? A: I do not know if the government intend to reduce the current court fee of £550 to start a divorce. I would be surprised if it were reduced. Usually this is the largest element of any divorce costs in ending your marriage. But since couples may
be less likely to argue then your solicitor or mediation fees are likely to be lower in the long run.
Q: What about the arrangements for children or a financial settlement? A:Remember that divorce usually contains three completely separate processes. The petition for the divorce which legally dissolves the marriage. The financial order, which legally distributes the couple’s assets. The children arrangement order, which legally decides where children will reside, visitation, etc… Most couples are able to agree the arrangements for their children. By removing who is to blame for the divorce this should make any disagreements easier to resolve. What usually takes the time and money is sorting out a financial settlement. I cannot see the divorce law change having any significant impact on this. However, by removing blame I would hope this will help couples negotiate and communicate more and in a better way to reach an amicable settlement. Q: Can I still start a divorce now if I want to? A: Yes, of course. But the current law still stands so you will have to choose from one of the 5 reasons for the grounds of the divorce. I think it may be a few months before the new law will be implemented. Considering there is a very large backlog of divorce cases due the Covid-19 lockdown, if you want to start a divorce now there is nothing to stop you, and you can always stop the divorce at any point up until the Decree Absolute is issued. Q: The law on co-habitating couples who live together remains the same does it? A:Yes. There are proposed changes in this area but that is for another day and another article! Our friendly and highly experienced local Family Law team can assist you at any stage of the divorce process. We recommend an initial divorce or separation consultation for a fixed fee of only £150+VAT.

Local Super Heroes Mr Richard Waples This month’s local hero is Richard Waples, who has been nominated for his awe inspiring efforts during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown, in particular for his help at Blackwell Primary School. The nomination comes from Anna Huskinson a Teaching Assistant at the school. We’ve heard that Anna is a star herself, working tirelessly during lockdown to keep the school and children safe. So Anna has been perfectly placed to see all the amazing things Richard has been doing at the school, collecting and delivering meals and food hampers for the children and dropping off home schooling packs. Rain or shine Richard has been there, often doing multiple trips, back and forth, dressed in his PPE equipment. The headteacher of Blackwell Primary School, Rachel Boswell had this to say about Richard: “Mr Waples is so brilliant in getting things out into the community, which has helped the school enormously. The staff here just want to say a huge thank you for everything he has done for us” As well as being Super Duper School Courier, Richard is also part of the Notts 4x4 Response group. Which means he, along with his other responders, have been transporting carers, helping clear blocked roads and delivering PPE equipment to remote doctors surgeries, amongst other fantastic things.
Obviousy a dab hand with vehicles, Richard is also Mr Fixit. As a mechanic he has been helping local people with their cars so they can get by when the garages were closed. Speaking to the school and his wife I was wondering how Richard has time to sleep, and then I fiound out he is also a registered carer for two of his children! AND did I mention, his wife, Katrina, has suffered a shoulder injury, so he has been taking more of the load at home too, all whilst studying at college! Wow! doesn’t even come close does it? I think you’ll all agree Richard is massively deserving of the title ‘Local Hero’. What an example he is to us all!
Thank You Richard! From Blackwell Primary school, all the team at Voice Magazines and everone in the local community!
If you know a Local Hero and I’m sure you do! PLEASE SEND US AN EMAIL OR GIVES US A CALL! We would love to tell everyone about them so they can inspire others! Tel: 01773 549 035 To advertise please call Voice Team on 01773 549 035

Now that we are able to get back out there and enjoy the countryside we thought we would bring you one of our favourite walks from the Peak District. The views on this walk are incredible and Rafa and Flake absolutely love it! Normally I would recommend a pub or eating place but for now I would take a nice picnic and don’t forget to take your rubbish home with you. The walk starts in the National Trust car park check out www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting/places-to-visit/car-parkstatus to make sure the car parks are staying open. From the car park the walk takes you out along Baslow Edge, past the Eagle Rock before descending into Baslow village. You then walk along the river Derwent before edging Calver and then up through Curbar and climbing back up to Curbar Edge.
5-mile circular walk from Curbar Edge Car park A mid-distance walk which should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. There may be some uneven and muddy terrain, so please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.
Start: Curbar Gap Car Park, Clodhall La. Hope Valley S32 3YR 1.
2.
Standing in the car park facing the road, follow a footpath out of the far right-hand corner of the car park, signposted for ‘Baslow Edge’. Cross straight over the road and continue along a farm track going uphill running parallel with the road. Pass by a large metal gate on your left and continue with a stone wall on your left. After a very short distance pass through a wooden gate. Continue along a footpath with open views on your right and a stone wall on your left. After a short distance the path splits in two. Keep to the left staying close to the stone wall on your left. When the wall ends continue straight ahead for some distance and pass by a large rock (Eagle Rock) on your left.

3.
Continue straight ahead for some distance until reaching a small marker post with blue arrows on your left. You will have open views directly in front of you and at this point follow the path to the right, going downhill. After some distance pass through a wooden gate and then continue along a lane going downhill with a stone wall on both sides.
4.
Continue along the lane for quite some distance to pass by ‘Ladywell Farm’ on your right. Immediately after the farm follow the lane sharp around to the right and then after a short distance follow the lane around to the left. Continue downhill along the lane until it turns into a road and you begin to pass houses on both sides.
5.
Continue until reaching a road junction and pass a red letter-box on your right. Continue ahead along the road passing the ‘Village Store’ on your right, then passing a

After crossing the bridge, turn right along a road keeping the river on your right. Continue along the road for some distance, passing all of the houses on your left and then continue into a no limits speed restriction zone. The road narrows and then begins to bend to the left. As the road bends to the left turn right to pass through a gate into a field along a signposted footpath.
7.
Pass by a marker post in the middle of the field and through a gap in a stone wall. Continue ahead to pass close by a telegraph pole and then continue with a stone wall on your right. A little further on pass through a wooden gate and continue with the stone wall on your right.
8.
Continue ahead until passing through a gap and then continue with the stone wall on your right. When the stone wall ends continue with a river on your right. After some distance pass through a gap and then immediately through a wooden gate to continue with the river on your right.
9.
Further on pass through another gap into a field and continue with the river on your right. At the far side of the field pass through a wooden gate, cross a river bridge and then continue along a footpath with the river on your right and houses on your left. Continue straight ahead, pass underneath a road bridge and then continue until reaching a road.

Cross the road and take the path to turn right and cross over a river bridge. After a short distance ignore the sharp turning left for ‘Dukes Drive’ and take the road on

After a short distance pass through a gap in a wall and then continue uphill until reaching some steps directly in front of you. Climb up the steps, pass through a gap and continue straight ahead. After some distance you will pass through a gap in a wall and onto a road. Turn immediately right just prior to reaching the road and continue going uphill on a footpath running parallel to the road. Continue to the top of the hill and the car park on your left.

When I brought home my rescue Czechoslovakian Wolfdog dog in 2009, I never imagined it would have such a huge impact on my life! I had always been into adventure sports and back then it was my full-time job, so getting into racing sled dogs seemed a little inevitable, with hindsight. Over the following years I was fortunate enough to be able to learn from some of the best, get more dogs and reach a standard where I was representing Great Britain at European and World Championship. At the same time I looked at the equipment and had that idea of making a bit for my friends, so set to work on my kitchen table, with a few ideas and a lot of passion, branding it as Arctic Wolf (after my wolfdog “Dakota”) With the global interest in getting out and running or cycling with your dog growing, so did my plans and the business and my new found passion changed into my career and entire life! Fast forward to 2020 and Arctic Wolf now has its own premises off Salcombe Road, in Alfreton, where we manufacture and distribute to 11 countries worldwide and we also house our first retail shop Purple Dog. My passion has always been quality and consistency over quantity, which is why we manufacture our own products here in the UK and also support other UK business, who aim to use primarily UK sourced raw materials, which is why in 2017 we became part of the Made In Britain campaign.
During these unprecedented and very difficult times for many, the lockdown has actually given me time to think about how we operate not just as a business, but also as individuals. It’s made me appreciate local family run business even more than I already did and it’s certainly inspired me to support my local community and local businesses much more, even if it costs a few pence more than an enormous multi-national shareholder owned chain. Why? Because it’s those small independent companies who use that money to do their local shopping and support their local community. Stuart (Arctic Wolf & Purple Dog)
As Purple Dog I have the same ethos. We only stock raw food and natural treats from companies who use primarily British sourced ingredients and who I know provide consistently highquality products. If you feed your dog raw food, how many times have you opened a packet and found it to smell a bit off, or be very “mushy”? That’s certainly something I wouldn’t feed to my dogs!
At Purple Dog we only sell products that we believe in and would use ourselves. That’s why we only stock high quality food & accessories that help you get active with your dogs. Our experienced staff can offer you free advice and will be able to help you find the best food and equipment for your dog.

THE SENSORY BUS & THERAPY CENTRE
Hello, my name is Melanie Wilson and I am cofounder of The Riley Foundation along with my husband Mark. Our story begins with our little boy Riley. He is 8 years old and has severe nonverbal Autism along with some other additional needs such as Sensory Processing Disorder, Apraxia, PICA and a sleep disorder. He was diagnosed age 3 and until that time we as parents were pretty unaware that there was much cause for concern, we thought he was just developing slowly, being a lazy boy, we didn’t know anything about Autism or how to spot it, we had no idea about the path laid ahead... Riley has come through the Mainstream Education system and with the lack of sensory support available this is when the idea for The Riley Foundation was born. We have been incredibly lucky with our mainstream school, they have been fantastic at accommodating Riley to the best of their ability and have listened to our suggestions but they are not a Special School and unfortunately lots of SEN children in other mainstream schools do not receive the support that Riley has. Riley has been assessed for an EHCP and has transferred to a Special School that can better accommodate him but the process was long and Special School places are hard to come by. As a result of that, many children across the UK are being help back in mainstream schools waiting for places or EHCP’s or having to muddle through mainstream school as best they can, all the while they are not able to access the most basic of facilities to meet their SEN needs. This is where The Riley Foundation can bridge the gap. We offer a stateof-the-art sensory room on wheels is a converted bus for the benefit and therapy of children with all kinds of SEN. As Riley’s parents we know only too well of the lack of these services in mainstream schools and also the huge
difference they can make to our children’s mental state of mind and quality of learning whilst they are in school. If children cannot learn the way we teach, then lets teach the way they learn!! The bus not only visits schools but also public events and private hire, meaning that any facility with any kind of SEN needs can access this equipment without referral. We have recently taken on the old doctors surgery in underwood and plan to convert it into a fully functioning therapy centre to expand our services and enable us to help more people as well as serving the surrounding community with all kinds of SEN through to Alzheimers and dementia. We are very happy to have teamed up with The Voice Magazine to bring you a monthly progress report on our new Community Hub! watch this space...

Book Review
One of the very few good things to come out of lockdown has been the way people have had time to appreciate the things around them, whether it’s watching birds out of the window or enjoying images on social media of sheep and deer wandering along roads and pavements while there’s been no traffic. The record numbers of people watching Springwatch on TV also show how much people have got pleasure from seeing nature just getting on with life even in the most difficult of times. So this month’s book review follows the trend by taking a look at Meadowland - the private life of an English field. It’s not a brand new book, but it’s a beautiful, warm and often humorous diary of a year in the life of a field by John Lewis-Stempel. Mr Lewis-Stempel seriously loves the countryside, that’s evident. But he’s got a magical way of writing about it. This isn’t twee descriptions of exotic birds and flowers. It’s dramatic and fun and full of character – he manages to make even the humble cuckoo pint plant sound like something out of Carry On Fielding. At the same there’s an immense amount of understanding of the way things work together – or don’t as the case may be – there’s a fair bit of disputation going on between the inhabitants of his field on the border with Wales. The key to the book is Mr Lewis-Stempel’s passion for being curious and observing everything – and his sharp self-deprecating sense of humour. He also writes immensely well and there isn’t a boring moment. There will be stuff in this book you couldn’t imagine. So even if it’s not your normal book choice, give it a go and prepare to have your eyes opened.

Mike’us sings M
Is social media making us antisocial when we are out in the actual world? Maybe the solution is that we should all have a dog as it appears that makes us a lot friendlier!
What’s become of us? (Part 1)
How are you with Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook or whatever platform you use? Sadly, I’ve come to the conclusion that the 21st century phenomenon commonly known as ‘social media’ is, in practice, the exact opposite of what the name suggests and should be re-named ‘antisocial media’!
considered posh if you had a telephone. Life for most of us is much better in so many ways. My gripe is that, paradoxically, modern means of communication have had the effect of making us appear, in public at least, entombed in our own little silo without being aware of life going on around us.
For example, am I the only one who
In short, we have slowly evolved into a less personalised socially interactive species and I reckon we’re the poorer for that. NB – those walking a dog are exempt from this observation. They will almost always acknowledge you and be prepared to stop for a chat, especially, if you have a dog on a lead yourself.

when walking down Alfreton High Street, has to make way for people coming towards me with their heads down staring at a screen?
2.
when trying to overtake a fellow pedestrian, finds that I’m having to swerve to the right and then again to the left as the person in front of me ambles along oblivious to the fact that I’m trying to get past, because ............they are checking their phone for Facebook messages?
3.
has had to occasionally pull up sharply in the car when either of the guilty anti-social citizens referred to above decide to cross the road, phone in hand, without looking up?
I know (as do you dear reader) the answer to all three questions. No I’m not. I’m not one of these grumpy old fogies who thinks that life was a lot better in the old days when we could buy six pints of mild down the George and Dragon and still have change from a ten bob note. When we had homes with outside toilets, tin baths, no central heating and were
The ‘genie is out of the bottle’ and there is no way that I’ll be able to change that. However, from today, why don’t we all make the effort to smile (don’t leer as that will have the opposite effect!) and mouth a cheery “Good morning/afternoon or whatever” - providing the circumstances are appropriate - to a passer-by, person waiting at the bus stop/sitting opposite you on the train etc. Go on, try it. You never know, it might result in a cheery conversation and I reckon the world will be a better place for that. There are other examples of what I would class as anti-social behaviour that have evolved in recent times. I’ll get on to those in August. Bet, you can’t wait!

GARDENS
Gardener’s Calendar The garden should be looking pretty good at the moment, and a lot of your work will be keep things ticking over. Many gardeners decided to give tomatoes a go this year, in the spirit of grow your own. Things to remember for toms are feed and water, nipping out side-shoots, taking out the growing tip of the plant once you’ve got three to four sets of trusses and - if the fruits get shadowed by vigorous leaves - the leaves can go, so the fruits can ripen. Watering is important for the whole garden at the moment, unless nature is doing it for you. Water at dusk so the plant keeps the moisture rather than it evaporating. Terracotta containers, while looking really pretty, soak up moisture. Try to keep them damp-ish or have the base of the pots shaded. Dahlias are also very thirsty, hungry, plants so give them regular liquid feed and don’t forget to stake tall versions so they don’t get damaged by freak bad weather.
r
You can cut poppies, catmint and hardy geraniums back to the ground now and they’ll put out new growth quickly. With the likes of delphiniums and foxgloves take out flower spikes as they go over, but not the whole stem – side shoots growing around it may produce new flowers given the chance. Keep deadheading, unless in the case of roses or honeysuckle you want pretty berries and hips later in the season.
TOP TIP!
If you’ve been able to turf or re-sow new grass earlier this spring, it will need more water than usual. Established grass will mostly survive drought conditions and come back in autumn, but newly planted needs a bit more TLC. 06/11/2018 18:16

Summertime Blues Across the Peak District Summer is the key time for butterflies and moths, although the latter are in the grips of a major crisis with numbers plummeting in recent decades. With Common warmer weather some Blue Butterfly formerly rare species are now turning up in the Peak but overall numbers are well down. You might think so what, but there are knock-on effects on other wildlife species such as bats and nightjars for example which feed on night-time moths. Furthermore, this type of decline is also a barometer that marks a wider malaise in the environment. The causes are probably the usual culprits of habitat loss, climate change and widespread use of certain types of pesticides which are also affecting bee populations. In the 1980s, I recall returning to Sheffield on my motorbike after an evening’s lecturing at Losehill Hall (then the National Park Study Centre) and having to pull off the road near Hathersage because I couldn’t see. The amount of moths hitting my visor, helmet and gear made visibility impossible. That is a lot of moths! But sadly no more, and some one-time common species such as the spectacular magpie moth and the garden tiger have declined sharply. These were species that as children we knew well and it is sad that kids today won’t have that same experience. However, with summer weather and the dry spring things are looking good for many butterflies. In grasslands, look out for the common blue butterfly which has caterpillars feeding on the pea family such as bird’s-foot Burnett Moth trefoil. If you spot a ‘blue’ in your
garden or maybe in a woodland glade, then it is the other species which is reasonably common, the ‘holly blue’. This is almost silvery-white on the underside and lays its eggs on Peacock Butterfly holly (obviously from the name), ivy, and Berberis. So with these two species you don’t need to get a full identification because the habitat separation is very clear. If you look at a wildlife guide to butterflies you will notice several other species but you won’t find any of those in our Magpie Moth region. Across the Peak though, whilst summertime blues may be relatively thin on the ground, there are plenty of quite spectacular butterflies to see along lanesides, hedgerows and in gardens. As plants like red valerian and buddleia burst into flower then watch for the evocatively-named red admirals, painted, ladies, small tortiseshells, commas, and peacocks. Garden Verbena is a magnet for butterflies and moths, especially hawk-moths on hot, sultry evenings. If the warm weather holds over the midsummer, then look out for hummingbird hawks and bee-hawks around these plants and on honeysuckle.
