Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

From the Editor Compared to the previous 4 months, July has been a bit of a blast! We ventured on hollibobs, thanks to the lovely Mandy at Travel Counsellors – as always an absolutely stupendous place with lots of memories created – including this…… I hate not being able to do a bucket list item each year and Stonehenge has been on it for years – so what better opportunity! It was nice to have a bit of what felt like normality for a week. It was also Mr Emily’s big birthday this month. So the guys at work treated us to a treasure hunt around Nottingham (least said about that the better as it ended with food in Hooters!) anyway, whilst we were there, we got collared by the BBC and was on the tellybox (East Midlands today) – 8 seconds of fame and a very proud nod by Mr Emily and that was it! I want my 15mins as promised by Andy Warhol so I’m owed another 14mins 52 seconds at some point along the line!! Yoga is back, which is brilliant! And Dr Parry’s daughter-in-law sent me an email after last months’ editors message – so a fabulous month all in all. It’s been so nice to be away from the dreaded C talk for a while, it’s driving everyone mad and although things are far from ‘normal’, it was great to do a few ‘normal-ish’ things

(with adaptations of course - masks/gloves/ distancing/hand sanitiser etc). Oh crikey and I almost forgot, we’ve also brought you a little insight into the craziness of the Voice family with an article about one of our adventures at an outdoor activity centre. What’s more we are also giving you the chance to WIN a family ticket to go and experience it for yourself. We really can’t recommend it highly enough; we had a fantastic afternoon. As always, we like to bring new things to Voice mags to keep you all reading and interacting with us! This month we’ve been contacted by another local gentlemen, best known as Professor Rebus and we are delighted to say he will be providing puzzles for the magazines. Check this new feature out on page 41 – His iconic Pitcherwits feature regularly in the Daily Mail and he also has books available to purchase. Check out his website www. pitcherwits.co.uk for more. Anyway, sadly we’ haven’t received a local hero from this area this month but please do contact us if you would like to nominate anyone, send us any updates on happenings and of course, if you would like to promote/advertise something – please get in touch. See you next month,

Emily x PS: Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

MINERS TO MEDICS

o Hist ry &

HOW MINERS PROVIDED MEDICAL CARE FOR THE MILITARY IN THE BOER WARS AND WORLD Tibshelf, once a quiet agricultural village, turned into an industrial hive of activity after 1864. The reason was coal. Needed to fuel the Victorian factories, wealthy entrepreneur, Charles Seely, developed deep seam coal mining around the village. This continued until 1939. Seely was a philanthropist and believed happy and healthy workers were more productive. As well as providing houses and other facilities for his workers, he pioneered Industrial First Aid. He saw that injured miners often faced hours underground before being brought up to the surface to receive First Aid. He established an Ambulance Corps and Nursing Association and trained miners in First Aid for use in the mines. The Tibshelf Ambulance Corps were early members of the St John Ambulance Association and Stuart Wardell, the colliery manager, was the Deputy Chief Commissioner for the Midlands. Like Seely, Wardell was keen on the miners’ welfare. Under Wardell, the Tibshelf Ambulance Corps was very proficient and well trained. They even developed a sprung colliery tub used to transport casualties to the surface.

In 1894 and 1899, the Boer Wars in South Africa caused many injuries for the British. The newly formed Army Medical Corps was understaffed and could not cope with the number of injuries. Volunteers were needed. Many Tibshelf miners volunteered to go to South Africa as they were fully trained first aiders. The success of the Tibshelf miners administering vital First Aid in the two Boer Wars carried on into World War 1 where many had to collect casualties in no man’s land on the Western Front.

Why did the military need miners? In 1891 the Mines Act stated all mines had to hold First Aid equipment underground and have qualified miners trained to use it.

Slimming World Recipe Crispy Chilli Beef This is one of my favourite Chinese dishes. So you can imagine my excitement when I found out there was a fakeaway from Slimming World! Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 nour 5 minutes Syns per serving: 1½

Method: 1.

Preheat your oven to 220°C/fan 200°C/gas 7.

2.

Beat the egg with a fork, then stir in the cornflour and bicarbonate of soda until combined and season lightly. Toss the beef in the egg, then spread out on a large non-stick baking tray in a single layer and spray with low-calorie cooking spray. Cook for 30-40 minutes, until dark and crispy, turning halfway. Reduce the oven to its lowest setting and leave the beef inside while you make the rest of the dish.

3.

purée, chilli flakes and stock cube. Set aside. 4.

Spray a large, non-stick wok or frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-high heat. Add the onions, peppers and carrots, and stir-fry for 7-8 minutes until starting to soften. Add the sauce and corn. Increase the heat and simmer for 5-6 minutes, stirring often, until the sauce is reduced and syrupy, and the vegetables are just soft.

5.

Add the beef to the stir-fry with the bean sprouts and bring back to a simmer. Cook the noodles according to the pack instructions, then drain. Divide the noodles and beef mixture between 4 bowls, and scatter over the chilli to serve.

Make the sauce by mixing together the brown sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger, squash, Worcestershire sauce, tomato

For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk

Ingredients:

Vintage Rambles a with raf lake and F

We’re back with another classic walk. This is a summer special from 2017, which we re-walked last month, just to check everything was still right. We had a lovely sunny day and Rafa and Flake loved it. We took a picnic and found a bench in Palterton overlooking the beautiful countryside – everything was perfect until about 20 minutes from home, when a very dark cloud came over and we were rushing back to avoid the deluge. You can’t beat a British summer can you!

6½ mile circular walk from Stockley Pond via Palterton START: Stockley Pond Car Park, Stockley Lane, Off The Hill, Glapwell. Chesterfield. Derbys. S44 5LY (Adjacent to the Plug and Feathers Pub). 1.

From the car park head back through the car park entrance along Stockley Lane towards the main road. Turn right along the road until reaching a pelican crossing. Cross the road and then continue for a short distance taking the next road (Bramley Road) on your left.

2.

Continue uphill along Bramley Road. After a short distance take the 4th road on the left signposted for’ Bramley Vale Primary School’. At the very end of this road continue straight ahead along a footpath that threads between the houses signposted for Ault Hucknall, with a fence on your left and a wall on your right.

3.

Pass a school on your left, then a short marker post on your left and then ignoring the path off to the left continue straight ahead with open views on your right and woodland on your left. After some distance pass close by a pylon on your right and then after a short distance cross straight over a crossroads of footpaths. Now begin to climb gently uphill moving away from the open views and going into the woodland.

4.

The path becomes steeper. Cross over a 2nd crossroads of footpaths then continue straight ahead for a short distance before following the path around to the left; pass through 2 marker posts and continue to climb. When the path levels out continue straight ahead with a steep drop to your left and a hedge on your right.

5.

After some distance pass through a gap in the hedge on your right. Continue along the edge of a field with a hedge on your left. After a short distance you’ll reach a hedgerow in front of you. Go to the left of the hedge and now continue along a track with a hedge on your right.

6.

Upon reaching a road turn left to pass a church and a farm on your left. Continue until the road bends around to the left. At this point continue straight ahead along a footpath signposted for ‘Rowthorne’. (The left split of 2 paths). Cross an open field and then cross over a small footbridge and continue straight ahead to cross a second open field. At the far side pass through a wooden gate

and onto a road. 7.

Turn left along the road and then at a T junction of roads turn right. After a short distance turn left onto a signposted footpath and continue diagonal right across an open field. At the far side of the field pass through a gap and continue diagonal right across a 2nd open field.

8.

At the far side of the field pass through a gap and then turn immediate right onto a tarmac footpath. After a very short distance follow the tarmac footpath sharp left and to a road. Turn left along the road and continue straight until the road bends sharp to the right. At this point continue straight on to a tarmac footpath.

9.

Follow the tarmac footpath, reaching a fence in front of you. Then turn sharp left, down some steps to a road. Turn right for a short distance and then take the first road on the left called ‘Beck Lane’. Continue for a short distance and then take the first left onto ‘The Pinfold’. After a very short distance the road bends around to

11.

Continue straight ahead for a long distance with a steep bank to your left and open fields to your right. You will reach a hedge directly in front of you and a small wooden gate diagonally to your left. Ignore the small wooden gate and turn 90 degrees right to continue with the hedge on your left. After a very short distance turn 90 degrees to the left and continue along the edge of the field with the hedge on your left. Upon reaching a large wooden gate directly in front of you turn right and continue with the hedge on your left. After a short distance turn left and continue with the hedge on your left until reaching a small wooden gate.

Pass through the gate and turn left along a road. Continue along the road for some distance and then just prior to reaching a 7.5 ton weight limit sign turn right along ‘Main Street’ signposted for ‘Sutton Scarsdale’. After a short distance turn left and steep downhill along a footpath signposted for ‘Heath via Stockley Trail’. After a short distance continue diagonal left over a lane and then continue downhill along a signposted footpath.

13.

After some distance cross a stile on your right into a field. Continue downhill to cross the open field and at the far side cross over another stile. Cross another field and then another stile. Pass immediately by a marker post on your right and then follow a farm track around to the left. After a short distance ignore the path straight ahead and follow the track around to the right and continue keeping a small bank and some trees on your right.

14.

After some distance the track bears around to the right again. At this point continue straight ahead to cross an open field. Continue winding gently downhill, and then cross over a stile and onto a trail. Turn left along the trail for some distance, then cross a lane to continue straight along the trail. After some distance you will reach a road. Cross diagonal right to pass through a metal width restrictor and continue along the trail with a stream on your left.

15.

Continue for some distance and then turn sharp left and cross over a bridge. Continue along the path and then follow the main path around to the right to cross another bridge. Immediately after the bridge turn sharp right, continue for a short distance and then turn sharp left to immediately cross over a crossroads of paths.

16.

Continue straight ahead and then at a split in the track keep right, going uphill. Continue over the top of the hill and down the other side. At the bottom of the hill pass a small pond on your left and then continue straight uphill.

17.

After a short distance the track turns into a tarmac lane. Pass through a metal width restrictor and then continue straight ahead on the tarmac lane. After a short distance pass by a metal gate and return to the car park.

We were lucky enough to be invited to a special afternoon trying out a range of their activities at this fantastic venue. Located on Ollerton Road, North of Arnold in Nottinghamshire it is only about half an hour from our South Normanton offices and was easy to find. The Voice team arrived on site to be greeted by the games hosts and then to be directed to our activity leader in where we was split up into two groups. We had a taster session of axe & knife throwing along with archery. The two instructors was very professional and explained all of the techniques and how to throw & aim properly. If you are a little competitive (like some of us!) then don’t worry you’ll be able to compete at archery darts or see how many axes and knifes you can land on the board. (Lisa and Paul were the respective winners!!) Next we went into the forest to play Laser Tag. Again we were met by the game hosts who got us set up explained how the game would work. It’s fair to say that we were all a little sceptical at first but within 2 minutes of the game beginning, those concerns were totally unfounded! Imagine top gun/purge/rocky/rambo with the accompanying music, in the woods with your laser gun & Camo along with face paint and lots of shields/hiding places to commando roll and crawl about in...yep, that was us!! The sessions include games such as last man standing, capture the flag and even a special zombie mission. We all had a blast and we certainly covered our exercise for the day!!! The Maize Maze was the final part of the day, it is massive! (12 Acres) it is not just a maze there are games to find and challenges to discover throughout. We all had a great time taking part in these four great activities and it is fair to say that there is something their for all ages. We will all be bringing back our families and friends for more fun and games! I think you can tell we all had a great afternoon. We would like to say a big thank you to Aaron, Luke, Rhys and Declan from Back to Basics and Lianne and Michelle from into the Forest for looking after us so well. Paul, Danielle, Lisa, Hayleigh, Emily & Liam at the Voice Team...

Mike’us sings M

Ooh he’s ‘gone off on one’ again…

What’s become of us? (Part 2)

As I’m sure you’ll recall, back in July I vented my spleen, lost my head a bit, got some things off my chest or, as they say in Blackwell, ‘went off on one’ about the anti-social elements of social media. This got me thinking about customs that have evolved in recent times that, by anyone’s definition, could be categorised as anti-social behaviour. You may not agree with me on all of these but I reckon most of you will be nodding your head at the sight of the following examples:a) Fly tipping. What makes anyone in their right mind think that it is OK to find some quiet spot on a lovely country lane to dispose of whatever they couldn’t be bothered to take to the tip? Yes, it’s a criminal offence, but there are still plenty of lazy and selfish prats around to think that ‘it’s worth the risk’ and spoil the countryside/environment for the rest of us. b) Parking in two spaces. I suppose in days gone by, there may have been a problem with inconsiderate tethering of horses and carts although I can’t imagine it was anything like as frustrating as finding that you’re unable to find a parking spot because someone has effectively taken up two spaces by leaving too much space front and rear. c) Pavement parking. I appreciate that in many of our towns and villages the only way to avoid narrowing the carriageway to such a degree that the free flow of traffic is restricted, is to edge

36

your vehicle onto the pavement. However, many drivers take this too far and end up making life difficult for pedestrians, and particularly those with prams or mobility scooters, to pass without having to go onto the road. d) Bags on seats. How often have you got on a busy bus or train and found passengers sitting on their own with a bag on the adjacent seat, totally oblivious to the fact that you’re looking for somewhere to sit. I suppose it’s possible that two tickets may have been bought and the bag is legitimately entitled to its own seat but, like me, you’ll consider that highly unlikely. OK, most passengers are considerate and will shift their bag onto their knee to let you in, but some ignorant people stubbornly refuse to do so until asked. e) Feet on seats. To be fair, I can’t recall the last time I saw a pensioner on the bus or train with legs stretched out and their feet resting on the seat opposite, so I guess this practice is generally restricted to younger people. Nonetheless, despite their youth, they should know better. It is not only anti-social, it is a downright potentially filthy habit. Do they know what their shoes have picked up? Rest assured, if they live in Newton, there will inevitably be traces of dog turd present but................that’s just another element of antisocial behaviour that gets me going!!

TRUSTED TRADER

06/01/2017 16:04

If you’re a fan of clever, enormously readable and gripping tales you’re in for a treat if you dive into William Boyd’s novels. Restless is not his latest book but it’s a great way of introducing yourself to his style. Everything Sally Gilmartin has ever known about her mother was a lie. She discovers this on a warm sunny summer afternoon in the 1970s. The story then takes us down two paths, her mother’s spy world of the Second World War with Britain trying to get the Americans to join the fight, and the heady freedom of the 1970s where Sally, a single mum, does her best to avoid the bitchiness at the school gate as she waits for her own child. At the heart of this book is the idea of deception. Of course if there’s spying involved, there will be deception. Maybe it’s in plain sight. Or perhaps the story is being told in a way to make you question everything you are being told. Do people believe what they want to believe and how much harder is that when the human heart is involved? This is also a love story and in addition it delves into the murk of an understandably rather odd mother and daughter relationship. It’s a fascinating mix and one which keeps your brain ticking as you work out the ramifications of what you’re reading.

Gardener’s Calendar We might, with a bit of luck, be in the midst of a few warm sunny days. So after all the hard work so far this year we can sit back and enjoy the garden, whilst keeping up with some important maintenance. Cut back lavender by about a third of its height (but not into old wood) once it’s flowered, to promote new growth. Cuttings can be also be grown on for next year. Plant in one part grit, one part compost. Keep moist but well drained. It’s also a good time to take fuchsia or pelargonium cuttings. When planting cuttings you can, to help them along, use store bought growth hormones and dip the base of the cutting. Or, there’s the home-grown versions: a solution of honey and water (2tbsp melted honey to 470 ml of boiled and cooled water) aloe vera (mashed gel from the inside of a cut leaf) or even aspirin (240 ml boiled water to 1 normal aspirin crushed). These will help prevent disease, which is one of the main reasons why cuttings die back, and should promote root growth (particularly the aspirin). Trim herbs now so you get a fresh flush of growth before the winter frosts. Turn your compost if you can, to help bacteriological breakdown whilst the compost is hot. Remember to keep watering camellias and rhododendrons even though they are past flowering. This helps the formation of strong new buds for next year. You can use “grey water” from the kitchen or bath to water flowers or shrubs if you’re trying to save water, but be mindful that additions like bath salts are not good for plants and you don’t want food bits in the water as this can attract vermin. Remove lower leaves on toms if they are starting to get really bushy, as can happen if they’re planted side by side in a growbag. This avoids the risk of disease.

r

TOP TIP!

Take pictures or do sketches of your garden now while it’s at its best. This will give you a guide to what you want to put in next year. You can see the things that worked, or were in the wrong place. It’s an invaluable tool for planning next January. 06/11/2018 18:16
