Hello, This month we have brought you a little insight into the craziness of the Voice family with an article about one of our little adventures this month at an outdoor activity centre (see centre pages). What’s more we are also giving you the chance to WIN a family ticket to go and experience it for yourself. We really can’t recommend it highly enough; we had a fantastic afternoon. Whilst we’re talking competitions, a few months back before the dreaded virus hit, we had a lovely competition that we ran, to win family tickets to either Wheelgate or Twin Lakes family theme parks. However, we were unable to draw it as, understandably, the park had to close and has only very recently re-opened. Fantastically, they honoured the competition and Danielle has been in contact with all the winners who have now been notified – so congratulations to the winners and we really hope you have a fabulous day. Two wonderful local gentlemen have been in touch this month. One of them is best known as Professor Rebus and we are delighted to say he will be providing puzzles for the magazines. Check this new feature out on page 27 – His iconic Pitcherwits feature regularly in the Daily Mail and he also has books available to purchase. Check out his website www.pitcherwits.co.uk for more. The second was our latest Local Hero, Michael Bagnall who got in contact with us to tell us all about his massive undertaking (well, it is to me as I really don’t do camping!) of sleeping under the stars for the whole of July to raise funds for his local scout group who desperately need funding due to the coronavirus. The Local Heroes feature has been running for a couple of months in our other magazines and we think Michael is well deserving of the accolade. Please read the

article to find out more and if you can support him, please do at www.julyunderthesky.com . I hope you can see we really value your interaction, so If you have any information that you would like to advertise, promote, share or contribute please do not hesitate to get in contact with us, we’d love to hear from you! See you next month,

Emily x

Book Review

If you’re a fan of clever, enormously readable and gripping tales you’re in for a treat if you dive into William Boyd’s novels. Restless is not his latest book but it’s a great way of introducing yourself to his style. Everything Sally Gilmartin has ever known about her mother was a lie. She discovers this on a warm sunny summer afternoon in the 1970s. The story then takes us down two paths, her mother’s spy world of the Second World War with Britain trying to get the Americans to join the fight, and the heady freedom of the 1970s where Sally, a single mum, does her best to avoid the bitchiness at the school gate as she waits for her own child. At the heart of this book is the idea of deception. Of course if there’s spying involved, there will be deception. Maybe it’s in plain sight. Or perhaps the story is being told in a way to make you question everything you are being told. Do people believe what they want to believe and how much harder is that when the human heart is involved? This is also a love story and in addition it delves into the murk of an understandably rather odd mother and daughter relationship. It’s a fascinating mix and one which keeps your brain ticking as you work out the ramifications of what you’re reading.

A Treat For All Tastes The Voice tries out The Eating House takeaway service

The Eating House have a fantastic reputation, so when we heard they were offering Afternoon Tea and Picnic Platters as a takeaway service (or to eat in their bespoke gazebos) we just had to try them out! Afternoon Tea - We were treated to a delicious selection of finger sandwiches including fillings such as ham, cheese and pickle, tuna and egg mayonnaise, a delicious selection of cakes, fruit scones with individual pots of jam, freshly whipped cream and fresh fruit! And if your thirsty - not a problem, the pack also included Twining’s English Breakfast Tea. The Afternoon Tea is priced at just only £12pp, which is fantastic value and everyone agreed it was so tasty. Picnic Platter - We received a tantalising treat of smoked mackerel paté, mushroom and tarragon paté, sundried tomato and mozzarella quiche, home made sausage rolls with chutney, cumin spiced hummus with crudités and marinated olives, chocolate cake or coffee and walnut cake & selection of juices from Heartseas Farm. The pack also included fizzy drinks such as raspberry lemonade and ginger beer. The Picnic Platter is priced at £13pp. Amazing value for the quality and quantity of food - We even had some left over for later. This was a truly amazing treat and so well thought through. If you are planning an outing (or even ‘just because’), very few people would be able to put together a better picnic themselves! With the quality of the produce, the attention to detail and the bespoke nature of the feast to suit any tastes, preferences or allergies, you should place your order, you will not be disappointed. In terms of the Afternoon Tea, well, it’s fair to say we’ve tried a few between us all over the years but genuinely, this is one of the best. You can’t beat a thoroughly homemade afternoon tea! The Voice Team loved this whole experience and can highly recommend it - a big 10/10

Located on Ollerton Road, North of Arnold in Nottinghamshire it is only about half an hour from our South Normanton offices and was easy to find. The Voice team arrived on site to be greeted by the games hosts and then to be directed to our activity leader in where we was split up into two groups. We had a taster session of axe & knife throwing along with archery. The two instructors was very professional and explained all of the techniques and how to throw & aim properly. If you are a little competitive (like some of us!) then don’t worry you’ll be able to compete at archery darts or see how many axes and knifes you can land on the board. (Lisa and Paul were the respective winners!!) Next we went into the forest to play Laser Tag. Again we were met by the game hosts who got us set up explained how the game would work. It’s fair to say that we were all a little sceptical at first but within 2 minutes of the game beginning, those concerns were totally unfounded! Imagine top gun/purge/rocky/rambo with the accompanying music, in the woods with your laser gun & Camo along with face paint and lots of shields/hiding places to commando roll and crawl about in...yep, that was us!! The sessions include games such as last man standing, capture the flag and even a special zombie mission. We all had a blast and we certainly covered our exercise for the day!!! The Maize Maze was the final part of the day, it is massive! (12 Acres) it is not just a maze there are games to find and challenges to discover throughout. We all had a great time taking part in these four great activities and it is fair to say that there is something their for all ages. We will all be bringing back our families and friends for more fun and games! I think you can tell we all had a great afternoon. We would like to say a big thank you to Aaron, Luke, Rhys and Declan from Back to Basics and Lianne and Michelle from into the Forest for looking after us so well. Paul, Danielle, Lisa, Hayleigh, Emily & Liam at the Voice Team...

Local Super Heroes Michael Bagnall This month’s local hero is Michael Bagnall, for his marvellous efforts to raise money for Chatsworth Scouts, through his ‘July Under The Sky’, 30 day challenge to live in a tepee every day and night in July!

The whole family (and a plethora of wildlife) have been supporting Michael. His wife, Amy has been setting scout badge challenges to complete and daughter, Grace has been on hand to supervise!

As well as living and sleeping in a tepee (only stepping indoors for the occasional toilet trip) Michael has been dividing his time between conference calls as part of his job, working in the pharmaceutical industry and earning his next scouting badge.

It’s clear Michael may have got more than he bargained for with this challenge when we spoke to him earlier this month:

Michael has a personal connection to the group which is driving this peculiar challenge. Although not a scout himself, Michael’s wife, Amy, is a leader at 1st Chatsworth scouts and their daughter, Grace is a cub. Chatsworth Scouts, like many groups, have done their best to keep spirits up and support their members during lockdown, with a virtual programme, including online activities and fun camps. However, the group face big obstacles if they are to return to face-to-face scouting and make it safe for young people. The building used by 1st Chatsworth Scouts will need critical modifications, as well as additional funds for leader training, resources and equipment. Having seen for himself the positive impact being part of the Scouting community has had on his daughter and the other children in the group, Michael has set a himself the target of raising £1,500 to help.

It’s been very challenging with the wet weather and high winds! And at times actually quite cold! But so far, the tent has held up! I am hoping the weather improves as it’s been horrible at times and I originally thought July would be a nice month!! We think Michael is very deserving of the title Local Super Hero for his fantastic fundraising efforts. If you want to support him in this or read more, Michael has been keeping a daily blog online, which can be found on a special website www.julyunderthesky. com, along with links to his fundraising page, facebook page and information about the challenges and Chatsworth Scouts.

Well Done Michael!

If you know a Local Hero and I’m sure you do! PLEASE SEND US AN EMAIL OR GIVES US A CALL! We would love to tell everyone about them so they can inspire others! Tel: 01773 549 035 20 Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

Ring a Ring a Roses We’re stepping out of the timeline for this month’s article and skipping forward to 1665 and the village of Eyam as it seems highly relevant to the current situation… In late August, early September 1665, Alexander Hadfield, the village tailor was expecting a bundle of cloth to arrive from London. His assistant, George Viccars was the one who took delivery of the cloth and, finding it a little damp, decided to hang it in front of the fire in the Hadfield house to air out.

had run its course. Arrangements were made with other nearby villages and the Earl of Devonshire to bring food to designated areas (boundary stones) around the village where payment would be left. These boundary stones still exist today. Coins were left in vinegar as it was believed this prevented transmission.

Unbeknownst to him the cloth was full of fleas carrying the bubonic plague, which was running rife in the capital city.

It’s hard to imagine how dreadful the situation must have been for the inhabitants of the village watching relatives, friends and neighbours die; yet remarkably they remained in isolation. The peak of infection and death occurred in August when 5 or 6 deaths were being recorded every day. Elizabeth Hancock, who lived with her family in a farm on the edge of the village, buried her six children and husband who all died within the space of six days that month. Those graves, The Riley Graves, named after the farm, are protected by the National Trust.

George Viccars was the first to succumb to the ravages of the plague, rapidly followed by his employers two young sons and Alexander Hadfield himself. Only Mary Hadfield, Alexander’s wife, survived but she reportedly lost 13 family members during the following 14 months. The plague continued to run rampant through the village and by Spring , at least 42 deaths had been recorded and many villagers were preparing to flee. At this point the local rector, William Mompesson, intervened insisting that the inhabitants needed to stay put in order to avoid the pestilence spreading to other nearby towns and villages. Mompesson was widely mistrusted by the locals but he was able to persuade the previous much-loved rector, Thomas Stanley, to help him. Stanley had been removed as rector in 1664 for refusing to accept the use of the Book of Common Prayer in religious services and many locals still looked to him for their pastoral care. The two men of religion somehow managed to convince the people of Eyam to self-isolate, to quarantine, until the plague

The plague ran its course and the last death, Abraham Morten, was recorded on the 1st November 1666. Remarkably no one broke the ‘cordon sanitaire’ and no incidences of the plague were reported in neighbouring towns and villages. The Reverend Mompasson survived, although sadly his wife, Catherine, did not. In 2020 we could all learn lessons from the courage and fortitude of the villagers in Eyam all those centuries ago! These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Gardener’s Calendar We might, with a bit of luck, be in the midst of a few warm sunny days. So after all the hard work so far this year we can sit back and enjoy the garden, whilst keeping up with some important maintenance. Cut back lavender by about a third of its height (but not into old wood) once it’s flowered, to promote new growth. Cuttings can be also be grown on for next year. Plant in one part grit, one part compost. Keep moist but well drained. It’s also a good time to take fuchsia or pelargonium cuttings. When planting cuttings you can, to help them along, use store bought growth hormones and dip the base of the cutting. Or, there’s the home-grown versions: a solution of honey and water (2tbsp melted honey to 470 ml of boiled and cooled water) aloe vera (mashed gel from the inside of a cut leaf) or even aspirin (240 ml boiled water to 1 normal aspirin crushed). These will help prevent disease, which is one of the main reasons why cuttings die back, and should promote root growth (particularly the aspirin). Trim herbs now so you get a fresh flush of growth before the winter frosts. Turn your compost if you can, to help bacteriological breakdown whilst the compost is hot. Remember to keep watering camellias and rhododendrons even though they are past flowering. This helps the formation of strong new buds for next year. You can use “grey water” from the kitchen or bath to water flowers or shrubs if you’re trying to save water, but be mindful that additions like bath salts are not good for plants and you don’t want food bits in the water as this can attract vermin. Remove lower leaves on toms if they are starting to get really bushy, as can happen if they’re planted side by side in a growbag. This avoids the risk of disease.

r

TOP TIP!

Take pictures or do sketches of your garden now while it’s at its best. This will give you a guide to what you want to put in next year. You can see the things that worked, or were in the wrong place. It’s an invaluable tool for planning next January. 06/11/2018 18:16

Summertime Blues Across the Peak District Summer is the key time for butterflies and moths, although the latter are in the grips of a major crisis with numbers plummeting in recent decades. With Common warmer weather some Blue Butterfly formerly rare species are now turning up in the Peak but overall numbers are well down. You might think so what, but there are knock-on effects on other wildlife species such as bats and nightjars for example which feed on night-time moths. Furthermore, this type of decline is also a barometer that marks a wider malaise in the environment. The causes are probably the usual culprits of habitat loss, climate change and widespread use of certain types of pesticides which are also affecting bee populations. In the 1980s, I recall returning to Sheffield on my motorbike after an evening’s lecturing at Losehill Hall (then the National Park Study Centre) and having to pull off the road near Hathersage because I couldn’t see. The amount of moths hitting my visor, helmet and gear made visibility impossible. That is a lot of moths! But sadly no more, and some one-time common species such as the spectacular magpie moth and the garden tiger have declined sharply. These were species that as children we knew well and it is sad that kids today won’t have that same experience. However, with summer weather and the dry spring things are looking good for many butterflies. In grasslands, look out for the common blue butterfly which has caterpillars feeding on the pea family such as bird’s-foot Burnett Moth trefoil. If you spot a ‘blue’ in your

garden or maybe in a woodland glade, then it is the other species which is reasonably common, the ‘holly blue’. This is almost silvery-white on the underside and lays its eggs on Peacock Butterfly holly (obviously from the name), ivy, and Berberis. So with these two species you don’t need to get a full identification because the habitat separation is very clear. If you look at a wildlife guide to butterflies you will notice several other species but you won’t find any of those in our Magpie Moth region. Across the Peak though, whilst summertime blues may be relatively thin on the ground, there are plenty of quite spectacular butterflies to see along lanesides, hedgerows and in gardens. As plants like red valerian and buddleia burst into flower then watch for the evocatively-named red admirals, painted, ladies, small tortiseshells, commas, and peacocks. Garden Verbena is a magnet for butterflies and moths, especially hawk-moths on hot, sultry evenings. If the warm weather holds over the midsummer, then look out for hummingbird hawks and bee-hawks around these plants and on honeysuckle.
