Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

Hello,

as long as our readers will host us.

Our big news this month is that it has been 10 years since our very first Magazine went out this month! I can’t believe how time has flown and how much the magazines have developed during that time.

I hope you can see we really value your interaction, so If you have any information that you would like to advertise, promote, share or contribute please do not hesitate to get in contact with us, we’d love to hear from you!

I remember it like it was yesterday, setting off with a scruffy backpack around Swanwick to deliver to 2,500 homes and panicking slightly every time I pushed a magazine through someone’s door, thinking that they were going to come out and shout at me or say it was rubbish or various other ‘end of world’ scenarios that never occurred! Obviously quite a bit has happened since then and we’re now up to 9 editions, delivered to 48,000 homes and we have a graphic design & print sister company which help us create our magazines alongside many of our customers adverts and various other design and print requirements. One of the huge steps that we took along the way was taking over from Wendy & Phyll at Rural Trader. We took over around Christmas time and it was a massive step but I am so pleased that we took the leap and we have continued to bring Voice Magazines to the Peak District since early 2017. No year is ever the same in this business – 2020 is testament to that! But while ever we can bring good local community content, give charities and community groups a presence and help any business of any size to get their voices heard – we will be here to support you

See you next month,

Emily x P.S. Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

Hope Cement Works:

Alternative raw materials by train

H

ope Cement Works is holding a public consultation exercise this autumn on a proposal to bring additional alternative raw materials to the site by train. To make cement the works uses local limestone and shale, along with imported shale replacement material. For the past 10 years, the shale replacement has been a byproduct from coal power stations called ‘pulverised fuel ash’ or PFA. This material allows the works to achieve the best blend of raw ingredients and keep sulphur dioxide emissions low during the cement making process. PFA is currently brought to Hope by train and the current planning permission allows the site to import up to 250,000 tonnes of it each year. Of course, the UK is moving away from coal for power generation so the availability of new PFA is declining. To maintain

the right blend, the works has been trialling alternative raw materials such as historic piles of ‘conditioned’ (or wet) PFA, slate quarry fines, fireclays, marl and other low-sulphur shales. All of these alternative raw materials have a higher moisture content than PFA (up to 30% water) which is driven off in the production process so the works would need to import a much bigger quantity to maintain its supply of cement to British construction. At the same time, the site team is keen to limit the use of the local shale (which has increasing amounts of sulphur the deeper it is quarried) to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions and achieve the latest emissions

is much more efficient than road and has a lower impact on people and the environment. To make this work, some new facilities would be needed for unloading rail wagons, conveying the material across the site and storing it indoors until it’s needed. This will require planning permission from the Peak District National Park Authority including full environmental assessments plus associated permits and conditions. During September, a team at the works will be starting consultation with people in the surrounding villages, including public exhibitions (both face-toface subject to suitable control measures and online).

targets. The proposal is therefore to use the existing rail link to bring in the additional material. Rail

More information about the proposals will also be shared as it becomes available via the works website To advertise please call the Voice Team on 01773 549 035 www.hopecementworks.co.uk.

A Will is not enough: Why you should make your LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY now… Hopefully we all know the importance of making a suitable Will… it shows you care enough about what happens to your assets once you’ve died. But… shouldn’t you care just as much about keeping your assets and yourself safe while you are alive? If you are unable to manage your own affairs… a Will is not enough. The legal documents you need in place are called “Lasting Powers of Attorney”. They allow the people YOU choose now rather than someone appointed by the Court of Protection to deal with decisions in two key areas: your Property/Financial affairs and your Health/Welfare matters. There may come a time in your life when you are unable to manage your financial affairs or personal welfare, owing to some form of incapacity and you will need someone to act on your behalf. Even when we are young, we can find ourselves incapacitated owing to illness or injury and it can be invaluable having a trusted, reliable person who is able to manage your personal affairs and remove the anxiety of having unpaid bills, at a time when you most need peace of mind. Similarly, as we get older, the need for attorneys increases as we are more prone to illness and injuries. Sadly, sometimes people fall into the trap of thinking “I’ll get something sorted when I start feeling a bit iffy”… but an unexpected stroke, accident or illness can take anyone by surprise, regardless of their age or health.

Only by creating Lasting Powers of Attorney now ensures that if the worst were to happen, you can rest assured that both your financial affairs and personal welfare are in safe hands. It’s vital to understand that you cannot make a Lasting Power of Attorney once you’ve lost capacity – by then its too late and your family will face a lengthy and expensive court process to be able to deal with your affairs. •

Loss of mobility or illness can make it difficult to manage your affairs.

The prospect of unpaid bills can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety and delay someone’s recovery.

Even the young can encounter problems due to accident or illness.

Minor children could be taken into Care whilst Guardians are appointed.

An elderly relative losing capacity is difficult enough for loved ones to deal with, without the added worry that finances are becoming muddled.

This is information was provided by Haworth WardDrummond, owner of Egg & Nest Ltd. , a provider of professional estate planning services in accordance with the STEP Code of Conduct.

It’s not too late to make a Will...

BAKEWELL From Spring Water to Puddings I had intended to focus on the development of a few local towns and villages after we reached 1349 on our timeline, but stepped away to focus on ‘Eyam – the plague village” in the last edition. Back to the plan now and this month it’s Bakewell’s turn in the spotlight with a very brief history of the pretty town on the River Wye Bakewell appears to have been established in Saxon times when it was called “Beadeca’s wella”. Baedeca presumably being a local Saxon and ‘wella’, meaning springs (as in water). The town is mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle of 924. In 949 it was called Badecanwelle and in the 1086 Domesday Book Badequelle. The parish church was initiated in the 10th century, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book, although most of the existing building actually dates from the medieval period and was restored in 1841. A market was established in 1254 and in 1330 Bakewell was granted a Royal Charter to host its markets: in other words, the markets were officially recognised, and Bakewell was recognised as a town, not a village. The town prospered, probably helped by its proximity to the Chatsworth and Haddon estates. In 1637, the then Duke of Rutland John Manners, built The Bakewell Bath house to enclose a warm spring fed bath dating from Roman times. His successor improved the building in around 1695 and the bath was given a vaulted roof ten years later. The bath still exists today, in the cellar of Haig House which houses the British Legion social club. The oldest building still in existence dates from about 1534, it now houses the ‘Old Museum’ but was originally a parsonage before being converted into millworker’s cottages by Richard Arkwright in the 1780’s. Arkwright arguably initiated the industrial revolution which ultimately led to the urbanisation of the UK.

His cotton spinning factory at Lumford Mill was built around 1782 and employed about 350 people at its peak, mainly women and children. 1779 saw riots in the town during a period of conscription into the militia. Rumours circulated that the residents of Bakewell were being asked to contribute more than their fair share of men. Six men were ultimately imprisoned, and the damage caused by the riots and looting was said to be considerable. In the 19th century a redevelopment of the town was undertaken; what we see today is largely the result of that period. Rutland Square was created, and the Rutland Arms replaced the old White Horse Inn. It’s claimed that Jane Austen stayed in the Rutland in 1811 and that she based Lambton in Pride and Prejudice on Bakewell, and Pemberley on Chatsworth House. Local ‘legend’ also says that the now famous Bakewell Pudding was created by a happy accident (the cook read a recipe wrongly) in the kitchens of the same inn. Bakewell is now a thriving tourist destination with a resident population of around 4,000 who contend with an influx of visitors throughout the year.

Book Review

This month’s book, Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo is definitely a oneoff. Winner of last year’s Booker Prize it’s a novel without a plot but with 12 of the most interesting, cracklingly different and unusual characters you’re likely to meet in a book. First off it’s about women – well women and girls. There are some men in there but they don’t have a particularly big input (or reputation) in the great scheme of things. You don’t usually read about these women in fiction. But in this book they give us a picture, through their eyes, of Britain - mostly, though not exclusively, black Britain - over the past 120 years. Each of the characters has a story – their life. There’s a kind of vague web connecting them but it’s written almost like you’re having a conversation with close friends about stuff. And built into these stories is the exploration of the realities of womanhood in this country. It’s offbeat and different and sometimes eye-opening and punchy but also funny and full of empathy and respect. There’s loads of social issues, including lots of right-up-tothe-minute observation of what’s going on for instance with the politics of gender and identity, but also the emotional nitty gritty of getting by on a daily basis. Clever and interesting and full of hope.

Gardener’s Calendar While the garden should still be full of flowers, this is also a good time to think about pruning and dividing so the garden stays healthy and bountiful next year. If you haven’t already pruned philadelphus and forsythia, do it now that flowering is completely finished for this year. Cut back to a healthy bud or side-shoot. Where you’ve got bushes which have outgrown their space take some of the oldest stems right back to the base then reduce the rest by a third to a half. Perennials such as hellebores or day lilies which have finished flowering can be lifted and divided. That way you get more plants for next year and existing plants have room to spread and so will produce more flowers. As a rule of thumb big clumpy perennials can be divided by digging down and lifting then prising apart with two forks back to back or even cutting through vertically with a spade. Then replant back in place with the offcut in another spot or even in a pot until you decide where you want it to be. Crocosmia have small corms. To divide dig deep about nine inches to a foot to lift then prise apart clumps rather than individual corms. They like to be crowded, so this is something you can do every few years rather than every year. Whatever you’re dividing, water it in well. Pot up strawberry runners for next year. Also start looking at daffs and narcissi for spring. They can be planted from the end of September on, but leave tulips until November. Wallflowers and winter pansies can also go in now.

r

TOP TIP!

Leave pea and bean roots in the soil when cutting back after cropping. Just cut to the base of the plant. The roots will release valuable nitrogen into the ground as they breakdown. 06/11/2018 18:16

Golden brown, red and yellow – The autumn leaves spectacular The annual cycles of nature are part of the joy of the natural world on our doorstep. They keep us in touch with our sense of place and of time and increasingly are recognised as being Cherry Leaves therapeutic. That most of our trees and shrubs are deciduous i.e. they open their leaves in spring and drop the dead ones pretty much all at once in the autumn, is just one part of this process. Phenology, which is the where and when of these natural processes and how they change, is also fascinating and can inform our understanding of things like climate change.

If summer has been dry then expect to see an early hint of gold and brown on trees across the region; and the same if there is an unexpected early frost perhaps. However, some trees have been showing stress all summer long and many have suffered from a mix of fungal diseases or blights and tiny ‘micro’ moths or leaf-miners. One of the more familiar of these affects the horse chestnut tree which suffers from both a leaf-miner and a fungus or ‘leaf blotch’. Both are new to the UK but then the conker tree, though deeply embedded in our culture, is also not a native either. However, I do get a lot of enquiries from concerned readers when they see trees affected by these attacks but generally they don’t do much longterm damage. The nasty-sounding ‘weeping canker’ on the other hand is a killer. Another fungal disease affecting a familiar tree is the ‘tar-spot fungus’ of sycamore which appears as unsightly black growths on the leaves, and which again is relatively benign. In fact this is a good indicator of improving air quality as like back spot on roses Oak Tree the fungus is killed off

by sulphur in polluted air. I first came across this disease on sycamore leaves when I left Sheffield and its polluted air in the 1970s and went to Lancaster University on the west coast. I Beech Tree was appalled to see all the sycamores covered in black spots but relieved when I discovered the cause.

However, as temperatures fall through autumn and especially following a series of sharp frosts, then the leaves across the countryside will ‘turn’ to produce a glorious show of yellow, brown, red, and gold. Particularly if autumn is late and there have been no strong winds, then this can make for a tremendous effect; one last throw of the dice before winter sets in. For trees and shrubs the process is important in the annual cycle as this is time to extract vital nutrients from the leaves, release or excrete waste chemicals back into the dying leaves. They undergo the process of abscission whereby the leaf stem is closed off from the living tree and the living leaf dies and then falls. We gain the experience of viewing the wonderful autumn colours and then the childhood magic of kicking through piles of fallen leaves with their unique fragrance; the stuff of memories.
