After saying how great it was that Yoga was back last month – Katie B has only gone and decided to have a sabbatical from teaching for an extended period – for all the right reasons, but what about me! How rude! Still, for our last lesson, she left us with all our favourite positions (insert eyeroll!) and serenaded us with an instrumental version of “time to say goodbye” as we were leaving (second eyeroll!) – it was nothing if not dramatic but I will very much miss my stretchy Mondays, Katie and our lovely group! In other great news – it’s 10 years since I delivered the first Amber Valley Voice through the doors of 2,500 homes in Swanwick, Riddings & Leabrooks!!! It was a bit hairy as to whether we would make it to 10 years and this year has been no exception to the long list of curve balls that has been thrown during our time, and like many small businesses it was genuinely touch and go, but we here and we are here we are here to stay! It’s been a bit emosh, this trip down memory lane! Thinking back, I can’t tell you how nervous I was trotting up people’s driveways (with half my family spread out delivering around Broadway!). And you always think the worst – what if they don’t want it, what if they come out and shout at me, what if they think it’s rubbish!! – I look back on that first edition now and we a very critical eye, I think it is rubbish but I can’t say that it didn’t have my heart and soul poured into it and maybe everyone else saw that too? Still, for whatever reason, you wonderful people seemed to get the gist of what I was trying to do and stuck with us – both readers and advertisers alike and here we are, 10 years later – 9 magazines, 48,000 homes, over 60 distributors, 6 wonderful people to work with (7 if you include Liam but he doesn’t really count as I can’t ever get rid of him – well, I could but it’ll be mightily costly!!!) Looking back through the cringe worthy first edition – we’ve still got 3 of our original advertisers in the magazine; R H Builders, S T Roofing and Seals Fodder Room, which is more than a bit awesome and they’ve become firm friends of mine over the years. We’ve created a bit of a timeline in the centre pages to show you the journey that we’ve been on and we’ll be making

mention of this throughout the year as we’re planning a few bits and bobs in relation to our anniversary. Despite this 2020 shaped catastrophe, we are working hard and planning to keep bringing in fresh new looks, interesting new articles and features and new ideas for what we hope to be, at least, the next 10 years. So please raise a glass to our wonderful team who are quite simply phenomenal at what they do, distributors who are wonderful and brave the weather every month to bring you the magazine, all our advertisers – many of whom are truly local and we try and support them as much as they support us, contributors who keep you entertained and of course yourselves – I could not have produced a thing without any of you effectively inviting me into your homes each and every month and it certainly wouldn’t have made it to 10 years. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. See you next month (when normality resumes and much less gushing!),

Emily x

CARE HOME

CARE HOME CARERS RAISE £1500 FOR RESIDENTS FUND

Alfreton care home, The Meadows, gained a huge £1500 from sponsorship for the residents fund. Sue Dennington and Lynn Hardy walked the 85 mile trek from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire to The Meadows care home The pair were pounding the pavement for a total of 4 days from 25th July - 28th July, gathering donations from across the UK. The idea came from Lynn wanting to get fit and lose weight. Lynn said, “Sue and I toyed with the idea and joked about it. We didn’t think we’d actually go for it! It was a very long way and involved 3 hotel stays and lots of drinks.” Sue said, “The thing that kept us going was everyone’s constant support and the money we were raising for the residents. Knowing that the sponsorship is going towards outings and activities to make the residents happy was the cherry on the top of the cake.”

It is sure to put smiles on the residents’ faces!” The Meadows is a part of the Milford Care group which have five more homes across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. MANDY’S TRAVEL PAGE Hi I’m Mandy your Personal Travel Counsellor. Just like you, we’re itching to get back out there. Back to exploring new cities, indulging in new dishes, embracing different cultures and encountering lifechanging experiences. However while we wait for travel to resume, we can’t help but dream of the six European cities we’re most excited to visit when it’s safe to jet off.

the major port, you can’t escape Hamburg’s maritime atmosphere for long.

Treat your kids to thrills at Liseberg amusement park, buy seafood at the iconic Feskekôrka fish market or taste giant cinnamon buns at bakeries on trendy Haga Nygata street.

Zurich, Switzerland - The largest city in Switzerland lies on the shores of Lake Zurich. Considered the social and cultural hub of the country, this pastelcoloured dream boasts winding lanes of the Old Town, charming shop fronts and a culturally vibrant atmosphere.

Gothenburg, Sweden - A city renowned for its canals and leafy boulevards, this charming and laid-back city is often overshadowed by the capital, Stockholm. Home to Michelin-star restaurants, a sophisticated bar culture, picturesque architecture and renowned galleries, Gothenburg maintains a small city feel while still offering plenty of things to see and do.

Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, Italy - If you’re yearning for glittering seas, bright white sands, and the glamour of super yachts and jet-setters, head to the breathtakingly beautiful Costa Smeralda. Named the Emerald Coast because of the exquisite bluegreen shimmer of the sea, this stretch of coastline on Sardinia’s north-east coast offers dazzling beaches, rugged landscapes with wild herbs, and luxury dining and shopping. Athens, Greece - Known as the birthplace of democracy, there are few cities on Earth which can boast the kind of history Athens has. It’s a city that mixes ancient history with unrivalled charm, attracting visitors with its cobbled streets, buzzing restaurants and bars, and ancient sites.

Take in the highlights such as the iconic Acropolis and Parthenon, ancient Agora and the National Archaeological Museum, but not before you leave yourself time to wander the colourful streets of Plaka, filled with charming taverns and gorgeous coffee shops, or soak up the atmosphere of Anafiotika which feels like you’ve been whisked away to one of the many Greek Islands. Hamburg, Germany - From fascinating historical architecture to striking futuristic buildings, Hamburg stakes its claim as the most eye-catching location in Deutschland. As you stroll over its many bridges, dine at world-class restaurants that line the riverbank, marvel at stunning art and naval memorabilia in their many museums and listen to the cries of gulls around

Hamburg is the epitome of class, and nowhere exemplifies this better than Speicherstadt – its warehouse district. Built on timber-pile foundations, the UNESCO-listed red brick buildings are beautiful by day and shine with light at night, offering up great photo opportunities – so don’t forget your camera!

Hamburg, Germany

When visitors get tired of shopping along Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s world-renowned shopping boulevard, they can take a scenic boat ride along Lake Zurich, rent a bike and enjoy the city on two wheels, or go hiking in the woodlands of the famous Swiss mountains that are only a short distance Vienna, away. Austria

Vienna, Austria - Vienna, the city of music, art, culture and fine food is the beating heart of Europe. Steeped in culture and grandeur, walk the symmetrical streets of Innere Strat and pass the grandouse St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Hofburg Palace, hop on board the tram circling Vienna’s Ringstrasse – a beautiful boulevard home to some of Vienna’s bestknown sights. If you’re looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, try a glass of locally produced wine at Mayer am Nussberg, an open-air wine bar that sits among the vineyards with a gorgeous view of Vienna.

Book Review

This month’s book, Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo is definitely a oneoff. Winner of last year’s Booker Prize it’s a novel without a plot but with 12 of the most interesting, cracklingly different and unusual characters you’re likely to meet in a book. First off it’s about women – well women and girls. There are some men in there but they don’t have a particularly big input (or reputation) in the great scheme of things. You don’t usually read about these women in fiction. But in this book they give us a picture, through their eyes, of Britain - mostly, though not exclusively, black Britain - over the past 120 years. Each of the characters has a story – their life. There’s a kind of vague web connecting them but it’s written almost like you’re having a conversation with close friends about stuff. And built into these stories is the exploration of the realities of womanhood in this country. It’s offbeat and different and sometimes eye-opening and punchy but also funny and full of empathy and respect. There’s loads of social issues, including lots of right-up-tothe-minute observation of what’s going on for instance with the politics of gender and identity, but also the emotional nitty gritty of getting by on a daily basis. Clever and interesting and full of hope.

If you have school-aged children then you may have found that the last few months have been – to put it mildly – challenging. A recent YouGov poll [www. yougov.co.uk] found that a third of UK parents haven’t coped very well. They’ve struggled with home schooling, citing discipline, motivation and finding adequate time as the main issues they faced. Others said that they couldn’t access the resources they needed, including things like laptops and help from schools. The Summer holidays are usually a time for families to leave the school gates firmly behind them and take a nice long break. But no doubt for many parents this year has been a different story. For some children the drastic changes to routine, the isolation from their friends and teachers, and the move to online lessons, being taught or supervised by one or more parent, and even having exams cancelled, risks causing long-term damage to their educational progress. Some parents may have felt pressured

into continuing learning through the holidays to give their children a chance to catch up. And not everyone can afford private tuition, which puts the better-off pupils at a distinct advantage. The Institute of Fiscal Studies warns that any further prolonged school closures “are almost certain to increase educational inequalities.” [www.ifs.org.uk] The impact on children’s mental health also cannot be ignored. School is one of the key focal points in children’s lives, giving them stability, meaning, selfworth, esteem, and a purpose. When children are not with their classmates and friends they are not learning how to interact, and much of this learning is done in the playground. In June the government advisory group Sage warned that both children and teachers will need a lot of psychological support once things return to normal because their lives will have been so badly disrupted by school closures.

KIDS & FAMILIES

Back to School – Back to Normal? or someone close to them has Covid-19 or is displaying the symptoms. Should a school have a suspected coronavirus outbreak, teachers will liaise with local health teams with the aim of keeping as much of the school open as possible. And should it be necessary to close completely then they are expected to have a homeworking plan ready to go.

It will remain to be seen just how well both educators and families deal with the new version of daily school life come September. Many teachers will have spent their Summers working on their back-to-school strategies which this year will look and feel very different from previous years with a plethora of additional measures needed to make sure children, parents and staff feel safe.

The current plan* is for all Whatever the new school term schools in England to fully looks like for you and your family, re-open at the start of the we wish you all well. Vintage Rambles a with raf lake and F

We’re back again with another classic from the Rafa’s Rambles archive. There are so many great walks on the Phoenix Greenways but this is a favourite of ours as the dogs get so much free time to get into all sorts of mischief! The walk starts from Tibshelf ponds and heads out on the Silverhill Trail and across to Doe Hill park before circling round and heading back along a different path. A lovely gentle walk that makes use of some lovely local trails.

5 1/2-mile circular walk from Tibshelf Ponds to Doe Hill park A mid-length walk which should take you and your dog around 2 - 2½ hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. Please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.

START: Tibshelf Ponds Car Park, Sunny Bank, Tibshelf. Derbys. DE55 5PF 1.

Facing the car park entrance take the footpath just to the left of the entrance and then after a very short distance at a T junction of footpaths turn left to continue along a well laid path passing a pond on both sides.

2.

Continue along this path for some distance ignoring all of the paths on the left and right. After some distance pass through a metal width restrictor and then turn right onto the Silver Hill Trail.

3.

Pass by a sign and path to the right for ‘Tibshelf Ponds’ and then a little further on at a fork in the path keep right and continue straight ahead. After a short distance cross over a road bridge and then after some distance pass underneath an arch bridge.

4.

Continue straight ahead for a long distance and then pass through a metal width restrictor to a T junction of paths. Turn right to continue along a lane and after a short distance pass through a gap adjacent

5.

Cross over the road diagonal left to continue to pass through another gap and onto a tarmac lane. Continue straight ahead along the lane for some distance and then just prior to crossing over a rail bridge turn right to pass through a gap in the hedge.

6.

Ignore the path immediately to the right and continue straight ahead towards a signboard on your left. At this point you will reach a fork in the path. Keep to the left and continue along this path for some distance until reaching a T junction of paths.

7.

Turn left at the T junction and then after a very short distance at a fork in the path keep to the right. Continue along this path for some distance until reaching a car park. Pass through the car park and bear around to the left to continue towards the car park entrance. Just prior to reaching the entrance and a height restrictor, turn left onto a footpath.

10.

Continue along this path until reaching a fork in the path. Keep to the right passing a pond on your right and then continue to pass another path on your left. After some distance you will reach an intersection of paths with a path on the left and then a path on the right. Ignore these paths and continue straight ahead going uphill. Continue along this path twisting a winding uphill and eventually down the other side. After passing a signboard on your right and just prior to passing through a gap in the hedge in front of you, turn left along a footpath to continue with a hedge on your right. by a gap in the hedge on your right. A little further on pass through a gap in the hedge on the right. After passing through the gap turn left, cross over a road and continue to pass through a gap adjacent to a metal barrier and onto a lane. 11.

Continue along the lane for a short distance until reaching a large metal gate and tall metal fence on your right. At this point turn left along a bridleway with trees and open fields on your left and trees and a fence on your right. Initially, this path runs parallel with the Silver Hill Trail you were on earlier.

12.

Continue for some distance and then eventually the bridleway widens into a lane. After some distance follow the lane as it bears around to the left. Now you will begin to pass houses on your right and a school on your left. Eventually you will come to a T-junction with a road.

13.

Turn right along the road going uphill and then after some distance take the 1st turning on the right into ‘Newton Road’. Continue, going downhill for some distance and then take the 1st turning on the left into ‘Shetland Road’.

14.

After some distance take the 1st turning on the right into ‘Sunny Bank’. Continue along ‘Sunny Bank’ until the road turns into a lane and continue along the lane until you reach the car park on your left.

It has been quite the journey... and looking back, there have been some ups and downs, as well as the positives - new mags, new people new areas and new premises there have also been some gaps where we didn’t have any growth and some really diffcult deadlines to meet. The first edition was the toughest as I was still working somewhere else at the time (although I knew it was coming to an end because it was a fixed term contract). Also, we missed the April 2012 edition because of our wedding overseas.... it was a nightmare to get the March edition out before we flew and then get May sorted as soon as we landed! One of my best moves was a physical one - into my first office in South Normanton in 2012. Things really started to happen from there! Along with every single person who has been (and gone in some cases). They have all brought a part of themselves to The Voice and we will be forever grateful that they were part of the journey that got us this far..... BAKEWELL

Mike’us sings M

When Mike said he was a GOF I half expected to find him dressed in black, looking moody and listening to the Cure. Then I figured out what it stood for… Terry Wogan used to call them TOGs. I suppose it makes sense, after all you tend to get grumpy when you’re tired.

What’s become of us? (Part 3)

I’m not sure exactly when I became a GOF - go on, work it out for yourself! - but it seems a long time ago now. Whatever, my blood seems to be constantly at a temperature only just below boiling point these days. Is it just me, or do others quietly simmer when they experience any of the following:a)

Phantom phone calls. You’re in the kitchen preparing your wife’s tea when the phone rings. She’s obviously unable to answer it as she’s watching Pointless, so you drop everything and dash through before the call goes directly to answerphone. You pick up the receiver and say a breathless “Hello” only to hear either a recorded message or a click, and the phone goes dead.

b)

Ungrateful drivers. You’re in a queue of stationary, nose to tail, traffic heading towards the traffic lights at the end of Alfreton’s High Street. You see a car at the junction of Limes Avenue with the driver desperately trying to turn right to join your queue. When the lights ahead change you patiently wait to allow this car to join the flow of traffic. He (or she!) cuts across, accelerates away and gets through the lights just as they change, leaving you with a face as red as the light ahead of you and time to reflect upon the fact that they never even acknowledged your courtesy.

c)

46

Queue Jumpers. Annoying at the best of times but I reckon it’s worse when in a pub. OK, as I write, this relates to 2020 BC (before coronavirus). In pre Covid 19 days, how frustrating was it to be in the Waggon & Horses,

waiting patiently at the bar for your first drink, when someone who has already had a bellyful of ale appears alongside and gets served before you? NB – I only used ‘Spoons’ as an example for effect and before I get barred I’d like to say that their staff are brilliant!! d)

Cyclists. I don’t want to knock those getting out and about to keep fit. However, I bet I’m not alone when, walking along the Five Pits Trail recently, to nearly jump out of my skin as without warning, a bike suddenly whizzes past. OK bikers, you may no longer need to have a bell on your machine, but it’s surely common courtesy to give some form of advance notice.

Having made a commitment to my wife that after all these years, I’ll change the habits of a lifetime and give up moaning, I promise to be a bit more upbeat next month. In the meantime, whatever your personal view on face coverings, I’m sure, like me, you’ll have laughed at the story of the guy photographed on the train on his way to work. He was wearing a pair of frilly knickers on his face with the leg holes over his ears. What an image, but top marks for inventiveness!

Those of you who enjoy reading Mike’s Musings each month may be interested to hear that his second book was published last month. It’s a sporting memoir, written in his own style, and available from Amazon. If you think this will appeal to you (or someone you know) send Mike an email to mike.musings@outlook.com and he’ll provide details.

While the garden should still be full of flowers, this is also a good time to think about pruning and dividing so the garden stays healthy and bountiful next year. If you haven’t already pruned philadelphus and forsythia, do it now that flowering is completely finished for this year. Cut back to a healthy bud or side-shoot. Where you’ve got bushes which have outgrown their space take some of the oldest stems right back to the base then reduce the rest by a third to a half. Perennials such as hellebores or day lilies which have finished flowering can be lifted and divided. That way you get more plants for next year and existing plants have room to spread and so will produce more flowers. As a rule of thumb big clumpy perennials can be divided by digging down and lifting then prising apart with two forks back to back or even cutting through vertically with a spade. Then replant back in place with the offcut in another spot or even in a pot until you decide where you want it to be. Crocosmia have small corms. To divide dig deep about nine inches to a foot to lift then prise apart clumps rather than individual corms. They like to be crowded, so this is something you can do every few years rather than every year. Whatever you’re dividing, water it in well. Pot up strawberry runners for next year. Also start looking at daffs and narcissi for spring. They can be planted from the end of September on, but leave tulips until November. Wallflowers and winter pansies can also go in now.

r

TOP TIP!

Leave pea and bean roots in the soil when cutting back after cropping. Just cut to the base of the plant. The roots will release valuable nitrogen into the ground as they breakdown. 06/11/2018 18:16

View from the Allotment

At last some rain following another drought. This should fill the water butts a bit. During the earlier long hot spell in late April/early May water usage on the Leabrooks (Bridle Lane) Allotment site (LBLAA) shot up over those few weeks from 2.5 to a record 51.5 m3 per week as plot holders watered their greenhouse plants and everything else on their allotments. The long dry spells are going to cost us more than usual for water this year. Vegetables differ considerably in their resistance to drought. Root crops like carrots, beetroot and parsnips are relatively tolerant of drought conditions while salad crops like lettuce and other leafy vegetables are more vulnerable. Peas, sweetcorn, climbing French and runner beans appreciate being given a drink during a drought especially at flowering time. Lower yields of peas and onions are to be expected during drought conditions as these vegetables have poor root systems so they appreciate a soaking. Some varieties of potato - Desiree, Marfona and Robinta are better at using water than others according to the RHS website. To save digging deep trenches this year I tried a new method of growing seed potatoes by placing them in a shallow furrow on the soil surface and heaping well-rotted horse manure over them to make ridges. I have paid the penalty because as the manure dried out in the droughts it has blown away in the gusty winds we have had exposing the new spuds to the sun. So many have gone green due to the formation of chlorophyll in chloroplasts. This is a natural response so the tuber can synthesise glucose for energy by photosynthesis. That wouldn’t be so bad by itself but these exposed spuds also produce a protective glycoalkaloid pesticide called solanine. This toxic substance is present throughout the tuber making green spuds dangerous to eat even when the green skin has been cut away. So next year it’s back to digging a deep trench and covering the seed potatoes with soil then perhaps some manure. Call our plot bailiff Mick on 07725402033 for information about having an allotment at LBLAA. Water is included in the cost of £20 per 400m2 plot.

Our Scandinavian-inspired Arctic Cabins are the perfect place to throw a party and you certainly won’t be missing out on fun if you put the right people on your garden guest list. With their unique sloping-walled design, our wooden Arctic Cabins are hugely versatile. You can party with friends around a built-in seating area, choose an optional drinks bar or create a unique integrated barbecue grill. For all-year-round entertaining, our Arctic Cabins can create a cosy dining experience for eating out on warm nights or let it take centre stage and wow your guests at the weekend.

Don’t worry about the rain either. The wet certainly won’t dampen your ‘do’ if you’ve got a gorgeous Arctic Bar! We design, manufacture and install our Arctic Cabins across the UK and our team of experts are here for you. If space is an issue – don’t worry. Our cabins are available in sizes ranging from 7m2 to 25m2 so we’ll make it fit. Impress your guests, give your garden the make-over it deserves and party like it’s 2020!
