From the Editor Halloween & Bonfire night is going to be a bit different this year! As I write, it seems awfully likely (as I think everyone predicted), that this virus will kick in again during the coming winter months. Irrespective of anyone’s views, in one way or another, this will affect a lot of people’s lives – be it health (both mentally and physically), income/job losses, families and issues that many of us will never understand. 2020 has already been a tough road and it’s still pretty rocky. What we do know though is that the clocks will still go back on the 25th October, the world will keep turning, the sun will rise every day and seasons will pass. We all have to stay positive and safe, because what’s the alternative?! It got me thinking this month, this majorly overly used phrase - ‘the new normal?’ Everyone is using it (me included) but consider what your ‘new normal’ looks like? Take some time to consider what ‘normal’ is for you and what you are in such a rush to get back to? Maybe we should take this opportunity to find a ‘better’ normal in future.
before, all the lovely people inside need your help to keep their businesses going throughout this rocky year and we need those fabulous businesses to keep our business going….almost every business we have spoken with has adopted coronavirus measures to their businesses to allow them to still be able to trade – so please keep them going. If we do go missing for a month or so, you know why! But, we’ve popped a nice little walk in, some puzzles and articles to keep you going. Until the next time, Stay safe,
Emily x

Rotary Club of Alfreton donate thousands to support local organisations It has been a busy year for the Rotary Club of Alfreton, despite lockdown the club have been active, making donations to local charities, helping those hardest hit by the pandemic. Before coronavirus hit a special event was held, where many of the beneficiaries were able to attend and receive checks in person and explain how the money would be used. Donations totalling £3,000 were handed out on the evening to the following organisations: Gears of Goodwill, Medical Detection Dogs, Alfreton Junior Football Team, Alfreton Scouts, Riddings St James’ Church, Alfreton Army Cadets, Alfreton Cricket Club, Ironville & Codnor Park School, Glebe Junior School, Westhouses Primary School, Blackwell Primary School, Alfreton Town Council charity fund. The club has been unable to meet in person in recent months but have been having regualr video meetings and have been able to help out the local community by making a number of further donations to struggling organisations who are often helping those who have suffered most through the pandemic. Donations include: Fare Share Food Bank £250, Alfreton Food Bank £750, Eradication of Polio £135 & Alzheimers Society £500.

NEW DATE CONFIRMED!
AN EVENING WITH JB GILL
SOUTH NORMANTON COMMUNITY CHURCH PRESENTS
SATURDAY 27TH MARCH, 2021 7:00PM AT THE POST MILL
TICKETS COST: £5 FOR 1, £7 FOR 2, OR £10 FOR 4 PURCHASE ONLINE: BILLETTO.CO.UK/E/SNCC-PRESENTS-AN-EVENING-WITH-JB-GILL-TICKETS-405421
If there is anything we all could do with, it’s something to look forward to! Most of us have had to put holidays on hold, return event tickets, and push back our own celebrations, because of the covid-prevention measures and lockdown. So, at South Normanton Community Church, we would like to give you some hope for one of the events we had postponed: An evening with JB Gill.
In case you’ve forgotten who he is, JB Gill is part of the hugely successful boyband, JLS. He is also a children’s TV presenter and Countryfile presenter, amongst other things. JB was due to spend an evening with us at the Post Mill, earlier this year. Over the last few months, we have been in communication with him to try and find a new date… this changed frequently with the changing government guidelines!
BUT...JB Gill will be with us for an evening of conversation, questions and selfies on Saturday 27th March, 2021 from 7pm at the Post Mill. I already had a ticket, do I have to buy another one?!
NO! If you already purchased a ticket, your ticket is still valid! We do have some tickets available, as we can increase the number of people in the room (hopefully, Covid-rules in March permitting!), and some people couldn’t make this new date.
I didn’t buy a ticket, yet, can you give me something to look forward to?!
Absolutely! If you would like to buy a ticket, and give yourself something to look forward to in 2021, visit our
ticket sale website: billetto.co.uk/e/sncc-presents-an-evening-with-jb-gill-tickets-405421 Did JB forget will (hopefully, givenVoice any future Covid-rules) be taking selfies with you? ;) 6 we already mention Don’t to mention Magazines when responding to the Ads

I joined Slimming World to lose weight after having a baby - and gained so much more!
My 5 st 2lb weight loss journey gave me my confidence and my life back, as well as my dream job as a Slimming World Consultant I’ve been on the large side all my fore life. I’ve always been up & down Be with my weight. I gained most of my weight when I was pregnant with my little girl. 2 months after having my daughter I joined my local Slimming World group & I weighed in at 16st 9.5lbs. This was the turning point for me. The heaviest I had ever been. I knew I needed to change my life.
After
I was so unhealthy before I joined Slimming World. I used to snack on crisps & chocolate & live off sandwiches & pork pies. Now my eating habit has changed so much. I now enjoy cooking delicious meals for me & my family. My favorite is Spaghetti Bolognese. There is so much food you can enjoy on Slimming World & still lose weight. 4 years on & I’ve lost 5st 2lbs. This month’s walk is one of our favourites. Unfortunately, the Mill and the Falls at Lumsdale are closed off at the moment as vital preservation work is required. Despite this most of the footpaths are open and this is still a fantastic walk. I have also left the alternative instructions in for the original walk (Point 7a, in red) so you can keep it for when the falls are open again.
3½ mile circular from Tansley Church Via Lumsdale
A moderate walk for you and your dog. Although relatively short this walk has some steep inclines/declines. It should take around 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Be careful on roads and as ever make sure you wear a good pair of boots, particularly if it has been wet.
START: Tansley Holy Trinity Church, Church St, Tansley, DE4 5FH 1.
Standing at the roadside, with your back to the church, turn right and follow the road, passing a recreation ground on your right. Continue until you see the Gate pub to the left hand side of the road. Turn left just in front of the pub and head uphill along a single track road with a stone wall on either side.
2.
Continue straight and over the crest of a hill and down the other side. A short distance after passing a blue sign “unsuitable for goods vehicles” on your right, bear right to pass a stone cottage and then head steep uphill.
3.
When nearing the top of the hill the tarmac road turns into a rough lane. Continue until you see

a signposted footpath to your right. Follow the footpath to the right heading uphill and into woodland. 4.
Continue ahead, over a crossing of paths then gently uphill. At a fork in the path bear left. After a short distance the path levels off and has a steep drop to your left. Continue for a short distance until you see a large stone lying just to the left of the path. At this point ignore the path to the right going uphill, instead take the path bearing left and downhill.
5.
This path will take you closer to the edge of the woodland and has a steep bank to the right. Continue straight until reaching a stone wall on your

6. Continue until you reach a river, cross the river via the stepping stones and then turn immediately left long a footpath. Keeping the river on your left continue along the path until reaching a lane. Turn left along the lane and then after a short distance pass a long row of stone cottages. 7.
Immediately after the cottages turn left and then immediate right through a gap in the wall. Keeping a pond on your left continue along a footpath. After the pond, at the barriers, turn right to cross a stone stile, turning left onto a road. Walk ahead, along the road for a short distance, then when the wall ends on the left, turn left downhill on a footpath, past a stone stile. At the bottom of the hill cross a stone stile onto a road. Turn left along the road 7a. (alternative route, when the falls are open) Immediately after the cottages turn left and then immediate right through a gap in the wall. Keeping a pond on your left continue along a footpath. The path begins to descend, twist, turn and thread its way through the remains of the Mill. Keeping the river and waterfall on your left continue downhill until passing through a gap and turn left onto a road.
8.
After a short distance after passing the car park/ layby and then at the end of a tall stone wall on your right. Turn sharp right onto a footpath. The path crosses a river. Immediately afterwards turn

left onto a footpath heading uphill and into woodland. 9.
After a short distance the path levels out. Continue for some distance keeping the river down to your left. Ignoring a path which bears right towards some houses continue straight and downhill until reaching a T Junction of paths with a large metal fence in front of you.
10.
Turn right, then bear left, keeping the fence on your left. Continue for some distance to pass a recreation ground to your right and then a converted mill to your left. At the end of a tall stone wall and when you see a stone post turn left along a path.
11.
After a short distance pass through a metal gate and onto a lane. Continue to the end of the lane and at a T junction turn left along a road.
12.
Pass the converted mill on your left and some new build houses to your right. Further on your will pass NFU Mutual on your left. Continue along the road with the river on your left and then begin to climb gently. As you climb keep the stone wall on your left and look out for a metal gate on your right leading onto a footpath.
13.
Go through the metal gate and continue straight ahead with a wall on your left, then into an open area (Keep dogs on a lead here as there may be loose farm animals). Cross a stile and continue with a stone wall on your left until the wall ends, then turn left and climb gently with another stone wall on your left.
14.
Continue to pass over a stone bridge. Immediately after the bridge turn sharp right to follow a footpath with a pond on your left. Continue around the edge of the pond until reaching a road. Turn left along the road going gently uphill and to the right of “Speedwell Mill.
15.
As you climb keep a stream on your right. When you cross over the stream on the road turn right through a gap onto a signposted footpath. Follow this path to the very end and then turn left along a road back to Tansley Church.
This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Book Review
American Dirt is a controversial book, but eye-opening and a shocking and very exciting page turner. Lydia owns a bookshop in Acapulco. She’s married to an investigative journalist and is living a comfortable middle class life until her husband writes a piece about the local drug lord, a man responsible for deaths and terror, who she also happens to innocently know through a shared love of books. Lydia and her eight year old son are forced to go on the run to El Norte – the USA - after the rest of her family is killed by the drugs cartel in revenge, and the rest of the story is a headlong heart-in-mouth race to escape their tentacles. They follow the route used by fellow refugees, risking their lives daily by riding The Beast – the dangerous El Bestia freight train - and dodging immigration patrols, to say nothing of the informants in the pay of the drug baron. It’s controversial largely because it’s written by a white American, Jeanine Cummins, about a South American family and there are those who say, this is a story which should be told by a South American and that it paints a picture of Mexico which many Mexicans would not recognise. Nevertheless real-life stories of the men, women and children who have taken the El Bestia migration route to safety have been researched and verified and the book may be a novel but it is a testament to the desperation of many who have followed this path. It really is unputdownable and no matter who has written it, you might agree that it can only lead to some understanding of what migrants face.

SOUTH NORMANTON ATHELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB Hello everyone, I’m writing our first article for The Voice magazine and before I get into more detail about the changes within the club I thought I’d explain a little bit about what we as a club are aiming for this coming season; overall we want to make more of a positive impact on the local community and in turn gather more interest and support from local people, we want to give young Normanton players the chance to come and get involved at their local club, and above all, have a team that loves being involved, and loves being here for footballing reasons alone. These last 2 months have been an absolute whirlwind, myself (Daniel Machin) and Javen Lee have taken over the first team supported by Lewis England and Harry Watson, with Joe Smith and Matt Hill taking charge of the new reserve side – and James Fletcher heading up the Sunday side. All of us are local people, with the common goal of getting South Normanton Atheltic back to the heart of its community. Myself, Javen and the first team staff are at this point in time (first week of September) seriously

pleased with the squad we’ve managed to assemble, it’s been a complete rebuild from last season, the lads are looking sharper on the pitch, and we know that they’ll only get better in time – which makes it even more promising! But off the pitch we’re really keen as a collective to make sure the environment around the whole club is one of positivity, togetherness and a sense that we’re all in it together. And its been great to see the camaraderie and the banter flying around from committee members, reserve and first team players and staff. It really is a great place to be at the minute. I believe my post is going to be followed with a photo containing all our fixtures for the month of September, the reason for this is my Grandad, Derrick Holmes has said for a long time that Normanton have never really publicised our games, again, something we want to rectify! However in the current climate games are changing all the time, so for more up to date fixtures our social media channels are the places to check. Best wishes and Stay Safe,
Daniel Machin

THE RILEY FOUNDATION PRESENTS:
OUR NEW CENTRE
We’ve been really busy again and we are nearly ready! Thankfully the weather has been kind to us and we’ve made some progress outdoors with having the fences painted, which look nice and smart. Indoors, we’ve had an accessible toilet fitted complete with changing bed. However, my most favourite addition has been the innovative lighting, which has been fitted by Jamie at Electro Technical UK Ltd. I can’t wait for you all to see it, it has given Jamie a few headaches but it is well worth it! The Kitchen has finally been completed and is ready to go and our integration room is really nearly completed with the climbing wall, swings, cargo nets and much more, in situ! With the Centre nearly ready for opening, we don’t
want to delay any longer. It is such a shame that we can’t have the big opening that we had envisaged and planned for BUT there is still going to be plenty of opportunity to visit us and meet the team. We are now looking for partners, sponsors and donations. As we move towards opening, we are looking for help and collaborations in all sorts of fields of expertise. We’ve made some excellent partnerships already but there is always space for more. We are launching our new website imminently, which is really exciting news. Especially for any partners/ collaborators as you’ll get a nice little mention and link to your website. Please email melanie.ceo@therileyfoundation. co.uk, if you want to receive our newsletter, which will contain updates, room ava i l a b i l i t y, offers and exclusive invites for open days

Mike’us sings M
My October resolution is to be....
........less grumpy
My wife is apparently not alone in her observation that my constant moaning has turned me into a latter day Victor Meldrew, and claims that she first became aware of this character defect on our honeymoon. She’s never let me forget (or anyone else for that matter!) how I wished her good night at the door to the ladies dormitory at the youth hostel that I’d booked for our first night of married life. To be fair, I don’t think she realised just how expensive hotels were in those days. Whatever, she’s convinced me that I must change my outlook on life, always look at things positively, and although she recognises that it’s especially difficult for me, to try to be happy. Well, albeit through partially gritted teeth, here are just some of the things that make me happy, or at the very least, a little content with life. Perhaps you share some of these? 1.

watching Notts County FC. NB – this was another early indicator for the missus that I was perhaps one of those poor individuals who was never destined to be totally happy!

going to the theatre for a performance of live musical theatre. Any show at any time, but West Side Story in particular, takes some beating.
10. cleaning the outside windows. Simply, one of life’s most therapeutic activities! There are a few others like moaning at people who a) drop litter b) eat in the cinema c) don’t clean up after their dogs etc., but I guess I’ve made that clear in the past. There you are then. I’ve tried really hard, although I do warn you that this ‘personality change’ may be short-lived and I’m quite likely to return - in fact I can almost guarantee it - to normal levels of grumpiness after Christmas. You may disagree, but I reckon the world will surely be a better place as a result!

Gardener’s Calendar
Bald bits on the lawn can be addressed right now and grass seed is probably the most economical and easiest way of doing it. Rake over the area to be sown to break up where it has got trodden hard. Put a light layer of compost on top and scatter half in one direction then half in the other. Don’t over seed as this actually makes it harder for the seed to take – there’s always instructions on amount to use on the packet. If you can sow after it has rained that’s best, if not, water gently. Then cover with netting so the birds don’t take advantage. Leaf mould is compost for free, so long as you’re fairly patient. In any case you shouldn’t leave leaves to rot on the grass as they will make the green stuff slimy. However you can mow them on the grass to help break them up – especially good idea with larger leaves such as sycamore. Rake the resulting mow up and put in bin liners. Moisten if dry, push holes in to allow air to help the rotting process and hide the bags behind something for up to two years. After a year the resulting partially rotted leaves can be used as mulch or soil improver. After two years it will be totally broken down and brilliant as compost, If you’ve got pine needles keep them separate if you’ve got rhododendrons or azaleas – they’re acidic and good for both. Lift begonias and dahlias if you live in an area which gets colder winters. You might just get away with mulching in milder areas. Cut stems two inches from the tuber, be careful not to damage the tubers when you lift them. Remove soil carefully and turn upside-down to dry properly. They need to be kept cool and dry so bury in trays of used compost or soil, leaving just the stalks poking out of the top. Store somewhere cool where they will be protected from frost,
r
TOP TIP!
It’s not just humans that want to snuggle up warm in winter. Put a small log pile somewhere hidden at the bottom of the garden to provide shelter for small animals. And leave a few bare hollow stalks in the ground for the insects. 06/11/2018 18:16
