Halloween & Bonfire night is going to be a bit different this year! As I write, it seems awfully likely (as I think everyone predicted), that this virus will kick in again during the coming winter months. Irrespective of anyone’s views, in one way or another, this will affect a lot of people’s lives – be it health (both mentally and physically), income/job losses, families and issues that many of us will never understand. 2020 has already been a tough road and it’s still pretty rocky. What we do know though is that the clocks will still go back on the 25th October, the world will keep turning, the sun will rise every day and seasons will pass. We all have to stay positive and safe, because what’s the alternative?!

almost every business we have spoken with has adopted coronavirus measures to their businesses to allow them to still be able to trade – so please keep them going. If we do go missing for a month or so, you know why! But, we’ve popped a nice little walk in, some puzzles and articles to keep you going. Until the next time, Stay safe,

Emily x

It got me thinking this month, this majorly overly used phrase - ‘the new normal?’ Everyone is using it (me included) but consider what your ‘new normal’ looks like? Take some time to consider what ‘normal’ is for you and what you are in such a rush to get back to? Maybe we should take this opportunity to find a ‘better’ normal in future. For as long as we can and for as long as it is safe to do so, we will bring you your monthly magazines. As I’ve said before, all the lovely people inside need your help to keep their businesses going throughout this rocky year and we need those fabulous businesses to keep our business going….

How to choose the right Rise and Recline Chair Care100 specialise in Rise and Recline chairs and have a largest selection of rise and recline chairs locally. Kate said “There are many important considerations when buying a rise and recline chair and getting good advice is crucial. Also people also if you have a long term chronic condition or disability, you don’t pay VAT on these chairs” To be comfortable, a chair needs to give you support where you need it. When you are buying a chair, give yourself time to sit in it for as long as possible. In the right chair •

you should be able to sit with your bottom right at the back of the seat and your feet flat on the floor

your thighs should be level and your lower legs straight up and down

you should be able to get two fingers between your knees and the seat

the seat should be wide enough to fit you but not so wide that it doesn’t offer you any support

Single or Dual Motor A single motor will lift your feet up and then gently recline the back. On a chair with a dual motor, the footrest and the back are operated by 2 different motors and will give you more choices of sitting positions. There are now chairs with added lumbar support and head supporters. Ask for advice when you phone or call in to Care100 to try the wide selection of chairs

“I am a local GCSE English teacher. I have to tell you about Sophie who sat her GCSE Language and Literature exams last summer 2019. Sophie lacked confidence, was frustrated and confused. She was routinely getting 2s and 3s for her work but I always felt that Sophie was far better than she believed.” Sophie’s mum took her along to Kip McGrath for an assessment in September 2018 and they began work. “Sophie soon began to feel comfortable and to have a go at things she had been avoiding. Steadily her work improved. By Easter she was improving dramatically. It was lovely to see Sophie full of optimism as she went in to sit her GCSE exams in June.

And the final result?... Sophie thrilled us all by achieving a grade 5 in BOTH English Language and Literature!” Sophie’s mum said “It was rewarding to work with the team at Kip and see the difference we made together.” Well done Sophie! Tideswell From Lead to Silk & Fairs to Wakes This month it’s Tideswell’s turn in the spotlight. I have a soft spot for this village; it’s the first place my partner and I visited as we looked to live together following years of ‘commuting’ across the Snake Pass. We ended up in Litton – just over the hill, before moving on to Foolow, but Tideswell is still somewhere I visit regularly. Tideswell; the second largest settlement in the Peak District after Bakewell; has a long history dating to pre-Roman times. There’s some debate about the origins of the name itself. One suggestion relates to a Saxon chieftain called Tidi – presumably the ‘well’ part refers to a water source. The other tells of a well in the settlement which ebbed and flowed like a ‘tide’. The town is referenced in the Domesday book of 1086, shown as ‘Tidesuelle’, part of William Peverel’s land grant from William The Conqueror. Less than five households are listed at this point in time. Jump forward to the 13th century and Tideswell has become a prosperous settlement known for lead mining. In 1207 the ‘Manor of Tideswell’ was granted to one Thomas de Lambley (aka Armiger) by King John. A market charter followed a year later. The original grant stipulated the manor should pass to de Lambley’s daughters, Joan and Alice and it was to Joan’s husband; Paulinus Peyvere, Bampton, or Taunton; that a ‘Grant of Fair’ was made in 1251.The Grant of Fair allowed Tideswell to hold five fairs a year, in addition to its regular weekly markets. The fairs and lead mining activities saw the town grow prosperous and in the 14th century work began to replace a small Norman church with an impressive new building dedicated to St John the Baptist. John Foljambe, a local landowner is thought to have financed the project (a brass bearing his name is inside the church). Building work took place between

1320 and 1400 with a hiatus caused by the effects of the Black Death which swept through the Britain in 1348/49. The church was restored in the late 19th century but is still substantially as it was originally designed, and deserves its nickname ‘Cathedral of the Peaks’. A grammar school was founded in 1569 by Bishop Robert Pursglove which finally closed in 1927. By the 19th century, textile production had become the major industry with small factories involved in the hand weaving of silk scarves and handkerchiefs for the Cheshire silk industry. Nearby cotton mills in Litton and Cressbrook became notorious for their poor working conditions and neglectful treatment of the workforce. Tideswell today may have lost its weekly market and annual fairs but it is still a bustling little town. Surrounded by wonderful countryside, including the beautiful Tideswell Dale, a Derbyshire Wildlife Nature Reserve, it’s a lovely place to both live and visit. An annual ‘well dressing’ still takes place on the Saturday nearest to 24th June followed by ‘wakes week’, with its carnival and parade. Sadly, the events of 2020 saw this tradition broken! These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Gardener’s Calendar

Bald bits on the lawn can be addressed right now and grass seed is probably the most economical and easiest way of doing it. Rake over the area to be sown to break up where it has got trodden hard. Put a light layer of compost on top and scatter half in one direction then half in the other. Don’t over seed as this actually makes it harder for the seed to take – there’s always instructions on amount to use on the packet. If you can sow after it has rained that’s best, if not, water gently. Then cover with netting so the birds don’t take advantage. Leaf mould is compost for free, so long as you’re fairly patient. In any case you shouldn’t leave leaves to rot on the grass as they will make the green stuff slimy. However you can mow them on the grass to help break them up – especially good idea with larger leaves such as sycamore. Rake the resulting mow up and put in bin liners. Moisten if dry, push holes in to allow air to help the rotting process and hide the bags behind something for up to two years. After a year the resulting partially rotted leaves can be used as mulch or soil improver. After two years it will be totally broken down and brilliant as compost, If you’ve got pine needles keep them separate if you’ve got rhododendrons or azaleas – they’re acidic and good for both. Lift begonias and dahlias if you live in an area which gets colder winters. You might just get away with mulching in milder areas. Cut stems two inches from the tuber, be careful not to damage the tubers when you lift them. Remove soil carefully and turn upside-down to dry properly. They need to be kept cool and dry so bury in trays of used compost or soil, leaving just the stalks poking out of the top. Store somewhere cool where they will be protected from frost,

r

TOP TIP!

It’s not just humans that want to snuggle up warm in winter. Put a small log pile somewhere hidden at the bottom of the garden to provide shelter for small animals. And leave a few bare hollow stalks in the ground for the insects. 06/11/2018 18:16

Autumn berries in woods, gardens, & hedgerows Summer’s end sees the last wildflowers and a move to autumn colours, particularly so for trees and shrubs. As September ushers in darker evenings and autumnal hues across the countryside, local Pyracantha bird populations need high-energy food. This is to prepare for the winter ahead or long-haul migration. During spring and summer, trees, shrubs and climbers provide flowers with nectar and pollen for insects and then rich supplies of berries. These mature at different times from late summer though the autumn. They can be a major supply of bird-food from wild holly and ivy to planted and self-set ‘wild’ cotoneasters and pyracanthas. Autumn provides a free feast for birdlife and for mammals too, with late-flowering ivy attracting plenty of pollinating insects. Especially good are old hedgerows with tangles of hawthorn, blackthorn, holly, bramble, and climbing plants like black bryony, honeysuckle and ivy. Such linear countryside habitats create shelter and connectivity in both rural and urban areas, and especially they provide food. Summerflowering roses produce abundant rose-hips whilst brambles and raspberries, with masses of blooms summer-long, have copious fruit crops taken in the early season glut. Throughout August and into September, summerbreeding birds such as warblers, like blackcap, garden warbler, and willow warbler have re-fuelled on abundant berries of honeysuckle, blackberry, rowan, and the like. When these birds head off on migration they rest and feed at places along the east coast which have vast quantities of sea buckthorn berries. This same shrub is now commonly planted along roadsides, central reservations on roads, and in urban landscaping schemes such as around car-parks. Soon, more bird species will arrive in great numbers from Northern Europe. inwardIvy These migrating birds will

include numbers of thrushes like blackbirds, fieldfares, and redwings. By December there may even be exotic-looking waxwings and other winter rarities.

Hawthorn Across open countryside, rowans, whitebeams, and hawthorns are especially favoured; and in gardens too these are magnets for birds throughout autumn. Other ‘fruits’ are also a great draw with oaks providing masses of acorns of which Blackthorne jays especially fond. They either eat them or cache them in secret hiding places. However, jays sometimes forget where they buried the seeds and that means next year we will have young oak-trees. Essentially, to get woodlands we often don’t need to plant trees as nature will do it for us! Beechmast and especially planted hornbeams are much favoured by finches and their relatives. Seed-cones on birch and alder are eagerly devoured by birds like long-tailed tits, siskins, and redpolls and these trees line the banks of many streams and rivers. In hedgerows and along woodland edges, hazel bushes have nuts ripening and both wood-mice and squirrels will be feasting. Search carefully on the ground and along with nibbled stones and fruits from under hawthorn bushes you can find ‘worked’ hazelnuts if hazel bushes are nearby. These are stashed in little caches where wood-mice have been hiding away. Good places to look are old drystone walls and around the bases of old, hollow trees and you find evidence of rarely-seen small Honeysuckle mammals.
