Get your bathroom ready for when you return from hospital. After a stay in hospital, it’s wonderful to hear the words “you can go home”. But if your physical needs have changed, it’s important that you can live at home safely and without any struggle. This might mean organising equipment or renovations before you come home. At AHM Installations we are used to installing bathrooms for people coming home from hospital. One of our customers, Mr Simpson, 86, unexpectedly went into hospital with Covid-19 last year. There he also had pneumonia, a superbug and a stroke and was in hospital for 7 weeks. “There was a lot of prayer,” his wife Mrs Simpson, 82, told us. Mr Simpson had been due to have a low-level shower installed but when he was ready to come home from hospital, the carers said that the new shower tray wouldn’t work. They needed a wetroom to make sure the new wheelchair could manoeuvre into and around the bathroom. Mrs Simpson said: “Every time I called Nichola (at AHM) to let her know what was happening, she was so good about it. She was so calm and accommodating. I felt very comfortable all the way through.” Here’s our guide to getting your bathroom ready for your return: • Take note of what the professionals say. A doctor, nurse or occupational therapist may recommend what activities you need help with. For example, if you need a walking frame or wheelchair to move around, we’d need to know what size it is. • Know the difference between independent and assisted bathing. If your goal is to remain independent, we’d need to know whether you can sit down and stand up unaided for example, and how your mobility is likely to change over time. If a carer is

going to assist you then products such as bath-lifts may need to be considered. • Ask a family member or close friend to help. Take the pressure off the decision making and involve someone you trust. If the style of toilet or tiles is crucial for you, make sure they know about it in advance. • Use a bathroom company you can trust. Some companies focus on selling bathroom products without understanding your preferences and needs. At AHM our priority is quality of life. There’s no point having a product unless it makes things safer and easier for you. AHM has installed thousands of accessible bathrooms over the last 20 years, so we know how to make bathrooms safe and stylish whatever your budget. We believe everyone should have access to safe, affordable bathing. We are polite, considerate and leave no mess. But don’t just take our word for it – you can read our customer reviews on our website, Check-a-Trade or Trust Pilot. You’re welcome to call us just for advice – there’s always someone at the end of the phone. Our family-run team are on 01629 705657. We offer a Price Match Guarantee and discounts for military veterans and for those with dementia. www.ahminstallations.co.uk
Hi Readers, Here we are, three quarters of the way through the year….I’m not even going to tell you how many days until the dreaded ‘C’ word, but it isn’t many and I have no doubt it’ll be upon us before long!! Every year, I have a plan! It starts around now and it involves me getting organised by purchasing some gifts for our loved ones…..and this is where the plan ends until around the 18th December!! I mean, it’s the same time every year! I don’t know what I’m surprised but yet I am doomed to repeat the same mistake like some kind of merry ground hog day! I suppose the only exception was last year as we knew we weren’t going to see some of the family, so what happened there was a ridiculously elongated gift obtaining session! It started around the 18th as usual (remember covid was initially planning to take a Christmas week hiatus!) and then sort of rolled into a cycle of sporadic gift buying – forgot what we bought them – bought more gifts – hunt down Christmas paper – wrapped gifts – can’t remember what they are – buy more presents…until
we saw the family in June! Anyway, this year is going to be different!! Honest!! Perhaps our front covers will help this month with the stress of it! In honour of International doodle day, we’ve changed the material of our front covers so that you can whip out your felt tip pens/crayons/paints and join in the fun. Laura has written a cracking article on this, see page 13 for details and keep your eyes peeled on our social media where we will be posting some of our attempts and please feel free to share yours! Happy Reading,
Emily x

Woman with terminal cancer does epic skydive for charity with her twin sister A woman with terminal cancer has raised almost £2,000 for charity after doing a tandem skydive with her sister. Lyndsey Allen, 35, was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer during the first lockdown, after living with months of agonising stomach pain. “Nobody wanted to listen,” she explains about how she tried to explain to doctors over the phone that the pain was “just terrible”. She was mistakenly diagnosed her as having Irritable bowel syndrome, then gall stones, before the agonising pain compelled her to take herself to hospital. A scan revealed that Lyndsey had 18 cm tumours in her abdomen and neck. She began chemotherapy almost immediately. “I was in a such a weak state at this stage,” she says. “I fell ill with sepsis and almost died. The hardest part was having to battle this alone as my family weren’t able to visit me in hospital. But I was determined to keep going.” “I was very down to begin with,” she explains. “But I figured, I just had to get on with life. And the NHS staff who’ve been supporting me have been incredible.”
Lyndsey has found the help she’s received at John Eastwood Hospice has helped keep her strong. She is taking part in a drugs trial for fatigue and is also given complementary therapy. Lyndsey says she’s always embraced the conviction of ‘Do what you want to do,’ and has never allowed fear to stop her from following her dreams. It was this attitude which made her decide to do a skydive to celebrate her thirty fifth birthday. “I’m of the opinion that we need to give back to people who’ve given to us,” she adds. “So seeing how much money has been raised so far for the charities we care about – John Eastwood Hospice and MacMillan Cancer Support - is great.”

Olympic Games!
Over the next two editions we’re excited to share an interview with Jacob Whittle, the 16 year old swimmer from Alfreton who became the youngest swimmer ever to make the British Olympic team. This month we look at how he began his swimming career.
Did you always love the water? Yes I did - my mum first took me to a mother and toddler session when I was maybe 1 year old and we went together every week. As soon as I was old enough my parents signed me up in a learn to swim programme - they aren’t swimmers but wanted me to learn to swim and not to be afraid of the water.
How old were you when you first learned to swim? I was 3 years old, possibly younger, I just transitioned from the mother and toddler water rhymes sessions where me and my mum were in the water together singing nursery rhymes. I went every week to learn to swim sessions on a Saturday at Water Meadows, Mansfield.
When did you realise you had the ability to swim competitively? I joined Ripley Amateur Swimming Club & Life-Saving (RASCALS) when I was 8 or 9, but I was 10 before I attended my first swimming competition. Derbyshire County Championships was my first major competition, and I didn’t make a final but the following year at the same competition I pretty much won every event I swam. At that age I was swimming all strokes and distances. I competed at the Regional Championships (East Midlands) and came away with a handful of gold medals, and I was given the opportunity to supplement my training at RASCALS by joining Dervenio Excel on a part time basis, moving to full time 6 months later as part of their national squad. From the age of 12 I was selected each year to be part of the talent programmes for Swim England. In 2019 at the age of 14, I qualified for the British Swimming Championships and whilst there I swam a huge lifetime best breaking the British record for aged 14 in 100m Freestyle. As a result of this competition I was selected for the European Junior Championships and European Youth Olympic Festival. Later that year I was selected onto British Swimming’s Podium Potential Programme.
How many hours a day do you train? Usually it is 4hrs per day in the pool and then I also do gym and circuit sessions a few times a week too.
Do you eat a special diet? No, but I eat a balanced healthy diet, with lots of greens, lots of food rich in iron, fish, chicken, plenty of carbs, lots of fruit, milk and I also drink lots of water. At the end of the day I am a teenager and my parents have always allowed me to eat like a teenager in moderation, which means I will have treats sometimes! Next month, Jacob tells us about his Olympic experience.

It seems it’s true, there is in fact a day for everything…even doodling, because Friday 3rd September is National Doodle Day - who knew? There is a serious side to National Doodle Day, it was initially dreamt up in 2004 as a way to raise funds and awareness for epilepsy support and research in the UK. Celebrities were encouraged to create a doodle and add their signature with the resulting, ahem, ‘artwork’ sold off via eBay. Do you doodle - now that’s not a question you get asked every day is it? The theory goes that because we tend to doodle almost without knowing we’re doing it, our innermost feelings or demons can be revealed as we let go of consciously thinking and just let the pen or pencil do its thing. You may start of just scribbling on the notepad in front of you whilst you’re on hold to the council / telecom provider / bank (or whatever) only to see a monster with goggly eyes appearing in front of you (this is especially prevalent when waiting in an interminable queue to speak to anyone who says you owe them money!). There are apparently translatable patterns to our scribbles: many of us will doodle hearts, stars, moons, flowers, squares, circles (and other shapes) and these tend to be connected with our basic need for love and security (apparently). Digging down deeper, are there more straight lines (masculine) or curves (feminine)? Straight lines appear more with fact based analytical people, whereas curves and circles show up with those who are more creatively minded. Doodle a house - square, with a pointy roof and uniformly square windows, and you
are probably a very down to earth and practical person with an eye to the material things in life. The pressure of the pen on the paper can also be an indication of someone’s state of mind at the time they made their doodle. Have you ever noticed that when you are feeling irritated or angry you press harder, almost as if you want to rip the paper? I know I have. Feathery light hesitant marks on the other hand can denote uncertainty, even a reluctance to make or take a decision. The next time you are sitting absentmindedly doodling, see if any of what I’ve just written fits your scribblings. Take note of your state of mind, were you happy, annoyed, feeling sad? Do your doodles reflect this? Or are they just random markings on the paper made to pass the time? To find out how to buy the doodles being created this year by celebrities ranging from cricket legend Dickie Bird to Maureen Lipman and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, you’ll need to visit https://www.epilepsy. org.uk/doodle-day. Who knows, you could end up with a rather unique piece of art for your wall, whilst at the same time helping support epilepsy research in the UK. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Bakewell Town FC has developed what we think is a new and truly unique process in attracting coaches to the club. We recently met with Vickie Norman head of “employability” at Sheffield Hallam University where there is a bottomless pit of talented young people looking to gain coaching experience. Trainee teachers, coaches, physiotherapists, and sports business students are looking to gain coaching experience. Dave Cottrell - the club Chairperson explains: “Student coaches teach our children the techniques of football and are developmental in their outlook and not win at all costs. The student coaches have been amazingly positive and develop all children regardless of their ability not just the match winners!”
1.
Bakewell Town FC in the community conducts a number of paid after school clubs where the coach can earn £20 per hour.
2.
The clubs’ host football camps where the coaches can earn and gain experience.
3.
Finally, Bakewell Town FC has a relationship with Juventus and Everton FC and provides coaches to work on their camps across the United States.
If you have any interest in coaching at Bakewell Town FC, please contact Dave Cottrell on 07808 786 000
The students at Sheffield Hallam University travel 36 miles each time they come to Bakewell to coach, and they do this twice per week! This gives them invaluable experience and references for when they look for jobs. The club interviews all coaches for suitability of personality and experience. This gives the student interview practice and sets standards. They are also further trained and mentored as well as obtaining coaching materials. We also invest in coaches by financing their FA level 1 and 2 certificates. However, when a student does get to work for Bakewell Town FC, they go onto gain more experience and paid coaching experience.

Book Review
There are some books which just make you happy – and The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window And Disappeared by Swedish writer Jonas Jonasson – is one of them. It’s not just that it’s funny and fun and clever and loopy. It’s warm, silly and endearingly full of the best of human nuttiness. A brilliantly written antidote to the sometimes grim news outside our windows and a great cure for the glums. Allan Karlsson – he of the hundred years – is sitting in his room in an old people’s home gloomily waiting for his 100th birthday party to begin. The Mayor is going to be there, and the newspapers. But then Allan decides he won’t be. With a sprightliness which belies his years he climbs out of the window, makes his way through the flowerbeds and he’s off for the best adventure ever, involving murders, vodka, criminals, an elephant, and a suitcase full of cash. And some pretty useless policemen. Allan is an old man who has seen it all, and played a significant part, it seems, in many of the big events of the 20th century. Albert Einstein, President Nixon, Stalin – are all bit players in Allan’s extraordinary life. As a lesson in how to grow old disgracefully, this is the pinnacle. You need never fear old age again.

Batch Cook Scheme About us: Rural Action Derbyshire has managed the Feeding Derbyshire partnership since 2015. We promote and pilot sustainable solutions to address food insecurity across the county. Our Vision is a Derbyshire where no-one goes hungry, a county where everyone has access to a good quality, affordable food! That is why we started the batch-cook scheme!
Charity provides healthy, hot meals for the vulnerable! Over the past 15 months, Covid-19 has left many vulnerable Derbyshire residents struggling to cook healthy, hot meals. Rural Action Derbyshire (RAD) first became aware of the problem just over a year ago. Demand for hospital beds to treat covid patients meant others were being discharged from hospital and in many cases they were often still too poorly to cook for themselves. To help support this vulnerable group RAD secured crucial funding and a Batch Cook project was set up to help. The pandemic and lockdown meant community cafes and kitchens were unable to operate. Rural Action Derbyshire, through its Feeding Derbyshire partnership mobilised these groups to establish batch-cooking at its best. In June 2020, eleven community cooking groups signed up to batch-cook hot, healthy meals for the vulnerable in their communities. Since its inception, the Batch-Cook project supplied over 3.7 tonnes of food to the 11 groups. This resulted in over 163,500 nutritious meals distributed to vulnerable people in Derbyshire at an average cost of 91 pence per meal.
Beverley Parked, CEO of Rural Action Derbyshire says, “Once we were aware of the gaps in food provision for the vulnerable when the pandemic hit we were able to adapt and respond quickly. I have been so impressed by the enthusiasm and hard work of the volunteers that have made all this possible, and the fabulous staff team at RAD. It’s been a great achievement.” Funding for the scheme has now ended, although some of the projects are hoping to continue to be able offer some prepared meals in their local area. With covid regulations easing, community cafes and other food projects are able to reopen. The Feeding Derbyshire partnership continues to support food banks, community pantries and school holiday clubs as the demand for emergency and affordable food remains at an all-time high.
For information on food banks or other affordable food provision throughout Derbyshire visit the RAD website: www.ruralactionderbyshire.org.uk/foodbanks.

When the meals were first offered to us it made me feel part of a community that really cared. It’s lovely to have a hot meal delivered to me every week whatever the weather. It’s always freshly cooked and nutritious, Thank you.
I love getting my hot meal on a Monday it makes such a difference. I live on my own and I am disabled so tend to eat microwaved ready meals most of the time. It’s always a nice surprise when I open the box and I have enjoyed everything that has been made for me.
I am caring for my wife, at the moment, and receiving a hot meal for the both of us is a welcome break from cooking. All of our meals have been lovely and sometimes there is enough for an extra portion another day.

Gardener’s Calendar Once your raspberry and blackberry brambles have fruited, take old canes back to soil level. On new canes take them to about four feet so side growth will be stimulated next year. Gloves needed! Planting shrubs and moving small trees now gives them a head start for next spring and you’re not so likely to need to worry about frosts just yet. Time to put in your spring bulbs. Daffs, and crocuses can go in before the end of September, alliums and crocosmia which flower next summer can be planted in September or October. Leave the tulips till November for best results.
r
Lots of outside container grown plants such as fuchsias and pelargoniums (geraniums) will quite happily live indoors over the winter, particularly in an unheated conservatory or cool room and will keep producing flowers. Don’t water as much during the winter months and cut back if they start getting leggy, but they can be put out again into the garden next year.
Top Tip Autumn is a good time to prune back hedges, but if you cut them slightly narrower at the top it will allow light to fall on the bottom of the hedge and encourage even growth. 06/11/2018 18:16

Peak Time for the Dragons We touched on Damsels last month but later in the summer and through into autumn it is the time of the Dragons! These are the big beasts of the insect world and in and around the Peak District the bigger dragonflies really come into their own. What is more, with warmer summers as we have experienced in recent years, the numbers and varieties have increased significantly. Along lower-lying rivers and canals you can expect to see the huge ‘brown hawker’ with a mostly brown body but shimmering goldenbrown wings. This will be joined by the ‘Northern Hawker’, the ‘Southern Hawker’, and the slightly smaller ‘Migrant Hawker’ with its downward drooping abdomen. The biggest of all is probably the appropriately named ‘Emperor’, or maybe one of our ‘specials’ of peat-moor and bog, the ‘Golden-ringed Dragonfly’. With their generic name reflecting their feeding behaviour these are called ‘hawkers’ and they will pursue and on the wing, eat, smaller insect prey. You can see them catch a butterfly in the air and then pull off its wings and eat the body without pausing in their flight. The prehistoric ones were about two feet across so just imagine that! Other groups of lesser dragonflies are similarly named with descriptive titles – so we have skimmers, darters, and chasers. Some of these species will be more commonly found in lowland parts of Derbyshire and the Peak; with others like Golden-ringed and Black Darter denizens of boggy pools and fast-flowing streams. The larger species however will turn up well away from their
breeding habitat and often visit gardens and similar locations – with or without ponds. Brown hawker for example can roam across the wider countryside and I even recall one hawking across the Bramall Lane Kop and livening up a particularly dull Sheffield United game in the 1990s. On another occasion it was a kestrel that provided the halftime entertainment as it flew and perched underneath the roof of the Shoreham Street end. You can expect to get good views of dragons along choice sites like the Rivers Wye or Derwent for example; and Cromford Canal is especially good. Old dewponds across the White Peak provide further good hunting grounds for the enthusiast as do the extensive peat bogs and pools of the higher moors. If you like the idea of dragons visiting your own garden, then autumn is a good time to plan any pond creation and to stock it up with water, plants, and silt in order for it to settle in over the winter months. However, you do need a sunny, sheltered site. If you can get materials from an established pond then it is likely that you will bring in the aquatic larvae of both damsels and dragons and so potentially ‘kick-start’ your own wild water-body. Once adult, these beasts do like to perch so provide suitable sticks or branches around the pond perimeter. Then just sit back and let nature come to you……….
