Hello Readers, We’ve made it to summer (allegedly – the weather begs to differ!) and everywhere is tentatively starting to re-open. We had a lovely meal in an al fresco igloo with 2 friends to celebrate a birthday that happened 2 months ago! For us, 1 vaccine down, it’s nice to be out and about again and of course, to be able to see friends and family at long last. We’ve got Christmas dinner with the outlaws next month – it’s the roaring 20’s – anything goes!!! Speaking of things being open – have we got a comp for you guys!! As you are all aware, the Y Not Festival IS running this year -yayyyy! We’re so excited as the Voice team are on tour BUT we also managed to get a family ticket to give away to our lovely readers. The line-up is amazing and something really positive to look forward too after the last couple of years. SOOOO…. to be in with a chance of winning - all you need to do is answer the following question and email, it back to us. Which county is the Y Not festival held in? Email us at info@voicemagazines.co.uk before 5pm on 18th June 2021, with the answer, your name & contact telephone number (if we don’t have both of these, you won’t be included in the draw). *T&C’s apply.
Following on from the re-opening of life as we know it – we suspect that events and community groups will be reopening again soon too and we’ve already had contact from The Men’s Shed and Alfreton Ramblers Club, so now we just need you! If you previously featured in our mag or you would like to in future and you run a community or not-for-profit group or event, please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you. Happy catching up with friends and family, but remember, the dreaded ‘C’ word hasn’t gone away, so stay safe! See you next month,
Emily x P.S Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

AWARD WINNING - INDEPENDENT - FAMILY RUN Over 10 years ago when RF&O first began it wasn’t to manage property for other people, it was to manage our own. After trying many different letting agents and services we found that there was something missing…. the genuine understanding of what it means to be a Landlord. That’s why we decided to start our own management company to help landlords who not only want to let property but who also want to do it, efficiently, professionally and profitably. At RF&O we pride ourselves on giving the highest quality standard of service to both our Landlords and our Tenants – our mission is to create harmonious, long lasting relationships.
Our aim is to provide you the landlord with as much advice and assistance as we can to guide you through the obligations of letting property and to help you with any queries that you may have relating to the property rental market.
Are you in need of some advice? – Speak with Olivia today… Olivia is a fully qualified Letting Agent and is always happy to help with anything you may need or require. Just a phone call away for FREE no obligation advice… What our clients think: “Thank you for returning my call and for putting my mind at ease in relation to going with another management company. Also, through your professionalism making it so easy for me to decide to go with RF&O.” Mrs C

Slimming World Recipe Margherita Pizza Homemade pizza is a real game changer and this recipe from Slimming world is easy to follow and provides a great base to begin experimenting with your favourite toppings. Just remember to count those syns if you are on plan.
Serves: 4
Ready in: 55mins
Syns per serving: 7
Ingredients:
Method:
• 125g strong bread flour
1. Put all the topping ingredients apart from the mozzarella and basil in a saucepan, season to taste and cook over a medium-low heat for 25-30 minutes or until you have a thick, spreadable sauce.
• 7g sachet instant active yeast
For the topping:
2. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6 and heat through a baking sheet or, better still, a pizza stone – this will help your pizza to cook evenly. 3. Put the flour in a large bowl and stir in the yeast and 1 tsp salt. Make a well in the middle, pour in 75ml of warm water and mix with a wooden spoon until you have a soft, fairly wet dough. Dust a surface very lightly with flour (1 level tsp is ½ Syn), turn out the dough and knead for 5 minutes until smooth. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a thin circle about 22cm across. 4. Put your rolled-out base on the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet (add a sheet of non-stick baking parchment if you’re using a baking sheet). Spoon the tomato sauce over the base and arrange the mozzarella on top. 5. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the base is golden. Scatter over the basil and serve hot with a rocket salad.
• 4 shallots, finely chopped • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tsp dried red chilli flakes • 2 tsp dried oregano • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 1 tbsp tomato purée • 70g reduced-fat mozzarella cheese, cubed or sliced • Small handful of torn fresh basil leaves, to serve

Brodie, lost over 5 stone at Sue Rutter’s Selston Slimming World group. Here is her story.
Before joining my Slimming World group, I was feeling really low both physically and emotionally. I hated having my photo taken and would always shy away from the camera. I was the largest I had ever been, I hated how I looked and avoiding going out and socializing with friends. Before having my first boy Harrison I was a size 10, happy and fit, running half marathons and feeling full of life. It was whilst I was pregnant that I decided I could eat what I like and my eating went out of control, eating all the wrong things which then lead to me comfort eating. When I fell pregnant with my second boy 5 years later, I was already classed as obese by the doctor which led to more comfort eating. After having my second boy Oscar I again continued to comfort eat and ended up weighing even more than when I was pregnant. It was after seeing a picture of myself over Christmas 2019 that I decided I needed to do something about my weight. I felt tired & moody, I wasn’t happy and found it hard to stay active for my boys. So, after Christmas, I decided enough is enough, I wanted to lose weight for me and my family. I wanted to do it safely, no fad diets as I was breast feeding, I wanted to ensure I did it sensibly and safely to enable me to continue breast feeding and to make sure it was easy, and that I never went hungry, to make sure I never gave up. Having seen incredible results from my fellow colleagues and friends, I joined my local Slimming World group in Selston.

LOCAL LADY LOSES OVER 5ST WITH SLIMMING WORLD
Joining group has been the best thing I ever did. Investing the time in me, by attending the groups and staying each week is what helped me commit to my weight loss dream. Even in lock down, I stayed with the group virtually, so that I could continue to get the support I needed from the group. Everyone was so supportive and inspiring and what I love is how my Consultant kept me going – even through the tough times,
I am now 5 stone 4.5 pound lighter and feel amazing. I’m not shy of the camera anymore and am forever buying clothes, knowing that anything I wear looks amazing. Throughout lockdown I had the energy to be able to run around and play outside in the garden, playing tag with my boys, something that they missed doing with their friends. I am now running again and have booked into a half marathon in September, something I wouldn’t have had the energy or strength to do before attending group. I am now a keen food optimizer and cook, I love the food I eat and so do the family, and now that I am at target that isn’t the end of my Journey. I can now use all I have learnt to share with my fellow group members and those members that may just be beginning their journey with Slimming World. With thanks from my group and amazing Consultant – I did it, I reached my target and will say to anyone- attending group works and you could achieve your weight loss dream.

If you are looking for something a little bit different to do either on your own or with friends and family or even as a gift for that difficult to buy for family member or friend - look no further: Why not try Forage and Feast? Join a professional forager to learn the art of foraging, and discover the vast range of wild edibles available in the heart of the English countryside, outside Nottingham, before cooking up your very own wild food lunch. Meet your guide in the Nottinghamshire countryside, and after your initial meeting, you will go through some of the basics of foraging. You will then head out to discover what exciting wild foods are growing nearby. During the foraging event, your professional forager will introduce you to a number of edible species; giving you tips on harvesting, correct identification and possible look-alikes. of pre-made wild food tasters from pickles to jams, chutneys, syrups, flavoured salts, alcohol infusions and much more. After your foraging walk, you’ll cook up a twocourse lunch utilising wild and foraged ingredients picked on the day – and some bits pre-prepared by your host. Some of the dishes you can expect might be: • Wild risotto • Wild noodle salad • Wild beans and dips • Orange and hogweed seeds cakes over an open fire • Dandelion root coffee pancakes with birch syrup • Elderflower cheesecake These items will naturally change according to the season and what you can forage, but whatever you cook it is sure to be delicious.

The Forgotten Conscripts - Alfreton’s Underground Army Many people today won’t have heard of the term ‘Bevin Boy’, but from December 1943 until the end of the war, no fewer than 47,859 Bevin Boys, named after wartime Minister of Labour Ernest Bevin, were directed to work underground in the coal mines. The unpopular decision became necessary to meet production demands which were vital to the war effort, and in order to do this an extra 50,000 men would have to be conscripted over a period of 18 months. The system employed by the Minister was that of a ballot scheme whereby young men of call-up age, upon registering, would be selected according to the last digit of his registration number. Draws were made every fortnight by the Minister’s Secretary. After medical examinations, travel warrants and instructions would follow, those involved having to report to one of 13 Government Training Centre Collieries in the United Kingdom, our local one being at Creswell, North Derbyshire. When
they arrived at the assigned destinations, they would be greeted by Ministry of Labour officials who would allocate accommodation in a miners’ hostel or in private billets, the cost of 25 shillings per week being deducted from an average wage of £3-10s- 0d.
by Alfreton’s older generation as “the Hostel”. The Bevin Boys found themselves sleeping 12 to a hut with very basic facilities. The Coal Miners’ Hostel was the official title, slightly more grand perhaps but no more comfortable! Training, for the Bevin Boys lasted four weeks, involved physical training, classroom sessions, surface and underground work. After the initial training period, allocation would be made to work at a colliery and our local pits all played host to these, sometimes reluctant, conscripts. The work was hard, often in appalling conditions in cramped spaces, and entailed walking for considerable distances from the pit bottom over uneven terrain in areas that were hot, cold, wet, draughty, dirty, dusty or smelly. The constant noise of machinery was deafening, coupled with the daily hazards of cuts, bruises and the ever-present risk of explosion and fire caused by ‘firedamp’, methane gas or rock falls. There were no toilet facilities. The Bevin Boys did not have a uniform and therefore wore only civilian clothes when they were off duty. Small wonder that this attire attracted public attention prompting adverse remarks as to why they were not in forces’ uniform. With the ending of the war in Europe, eventually, in 1948, a release scheme was introduced similar to that of the Armed Forces, but Bevin Boys received no other form of recognition or reward for their services to the war effort, in which they played a vital part. Indeed it wasn’t until March, 2008 when a Veteran’s Badge was issued by the Government that their efforts were officially recognised. This is but one link to our town’s proud Mining Heritage. Sadly for the younger generation Coal isn’t even a memory and very few would even recognise it.
It was then, on North Street Alfreton, 200 young men found themselves in a collection of buildings known

Bess of Hardwick Part 1 - The Ascendancy - Bess of Hardwick was an unusual woman. At a time when women were often considered to be possessions to be traded in marriage to the highest bidder, Bess became one of the most powerful women in Elizabethan times due to a series of fortuitous marriages. Bess was born Elizabeth Hardwick sometime in 1527 (her exact date of birth is unknown) to father, John Hardwick, and his wife Elizabeth Leeke. The Hardwick family had arrived in Derbyshire at some point in the 13th century having moved from Sussex. They farmed land, granted to a Robert Savage, on the borders of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. By the 15th century the Hardwick family had climbed the social ladder somewhat, and were regarded as ‘gentlemen yeomen’ with a small estate. Her first marriage, in around 1543, was to the young (13) heir of a nearby small estate – Robert Barley (Barlow). Robert’s father died soon after the wedding and Robert himself died in December 1544. There is no evidence that the couple actually lived together and obviously there were no children from the marriage. Bess’s claim to inherit was disputed and it was several years after his death before she was awarded both the estate and compensation. Following Robert’s death, Bess, still a teenager at this point, is thought to have become a lady-in-waiting to Frances Grey, mother of Lady Jane Grey. This position allowed her to mingle in top Tudor society. It is likely she met her second husband, Sir William Cavendish whilst in the service of Frances Grey. The wedding took place 20 August 1547 and, at the tender age of 20,
24
elevated her to Lady Cavendish. Sir William, probably at Bess’s urging sold his lands in the south of England and purchased the Chatsworth estate on which they began to build a mansion. Although he was more than 20 years her senior, the marriage was happy and produced eight children – one of whom; William, born 27 December 1552; became the First Earl of Devonshire. His Grandson was created Marquess of Hartington and Duke of Devonshire in 1694 and their descendants still live at Chatsworth House. William died in October 1557 leaving Bess deep in debt. A third marriage in 1559 to Sir William Loe, Captain of the Guard to Queen Elizabeth I, ensued. His position enabled him to vastly reduce her debts and also gave her access to the Queen when she was made Lady of the Bedchamber. Upon his death some 7 years later, with no male heir, he left everything to Bess, and she became one of the wealthiest women in England. Her fourth and final marriage was in 1568 to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury. Cleverly Bess managed to ensure that Chatsworth and some of her other estates stayed under her control. Upon his death in 1590 Bess became Dowager Countess of Shrewsbury. She befriended two queens. Elizabeth 1 Queen of England and Mary, Queen of

Bess of Hardwick: Part 2 – The Legacy - As we saw in the previous article, Bess rose from humble beginnings in rural Derbyshire to become one of the wealthiest and most influential women in the UK. Scotland (there will be more about those relationship in Part 3). And she married into the nobility. One of her lasting legacies however are the buildings she commissioned as her fortune increased. Little remains of Bess’s home at Chatsworth after her descendant, the 4th Earl of Devonshire entirely remodelled the grand house she had begun building in 1552. There is little doubt however, that without her there would probably have been no Chatsworth for us to visit in the 21st Century. The only part of her scheme to remain unchanged to the present is the Hunting Tower sited in the hills overlooking the house. Perhaps uniquely for the era; when Bess finally separated once and for all from her fourth and final husband, the Earl of Shrewsbury, she had the wealth and resources to live independently. In 1584, following the acrimonious split, she left the Chatsworth estate fearing attack from her husband’s men. She found solace in her old family home at Hardwick which she had purchased in 1583 after the death of the brother; heir to that property; James Hardwick who had died in horrendous debt. Finally free to do what SHE wanted, Bess oversaw the redevelopment of what was a simple Medieval manor house, into a grand and comfortable home for herself, her son William and his family. In 1590 the Earl of Shrewsbury, Bess’s estranged husband, died. She was thus the benefactor of even greater wealth and, fuelled by a passion for building AND immense
funds to support her ideas, she began to plan for an even grander house on the Hardwick site. The Hardwick Hall we see today was built entirely at the behest of Bess herself and she took great pride and pleasure in overseeing the development. The huge expanses of glass windows were evidence of her wealth and she continued the innovation, first seen at Old Hardwick Hall, of a great hall running the centre of the house and two stories high. Work also continued on the Old Hall which was retained to act as a kind of overspill accommodation for guests and servants. Bess spent the latter years of her life involved in furnishing Hardwick and overseeing the building work there and at Oldcotes where she had commissioned another house for her son William. When she finally died in 1608, at the grand old age of 81, Bess was still regarded as one of the richest and most powerful women in the Kingdom. She was interred in All Saints Church, Derby under an elaborate monument she’d commissioned. When All Saints was demolished and rebuilt to form Derby Cathedral, Bess and her effigy were reinterred. MAXINE START
Hands, Face, Space has become part of our everyday vocabulary over this past year. How about STOP, READ, SHARE…… I’ve just spent the past 3 weeks completing a Covid Rehabilitation course for Specialist Exercise Instructors. It’s been fascinating, but equally it’s left me feeling frustrated that you, the general public aren’t being told about this.
Please take a moment to read on. As a population, we know that Covid is a virus that gets into the lungs. It replicated in the cells and then begins to destroy a part of the lung called the alveoli. What most of us DON’T know is that this devastation brings about an over response from our immune system, which in turn can kill even more cells, causing long term chronic fatigue, cardiac, neurological, cognitive and mental health issues. We are beginning to know this as ‘Long Covid’. (We are susceptible to this until 20 weeks post symptomatic) Some of us may not notice anything untoward until we try to get back to exercise, full time work, or now as lockdown restrictions ease further, the general busyness of everyday day life. It might take weeks for us begin to feel that ‘something isn’t right’. For those people unlucky enough to have had Covid 19, their lungs may have been altered or damaged. They may not be the same person as they were before the virus hit and shouldn’t expect to exercise or perform their daily workload like they did before. Not for sometime at least. The individual needs to heal. Expectations need to be managed. Returning to ‘life’ or exercise, too hard, or too fast, at best can prolong recovery. At worst, a whole manner of complications can take place.
I’m not here to scare monger. I’m here to reassure. Exercise can and WILL help the recovery process, and done right, someone can be fitter and healthier than they’ve ever been. But it needs to be done right. Daily walking is a great place to start. The pace should be comfortable and very achievable. Little and often, increasing the overall daily duration modestly, no more than 10% per week. Please let people know this. Perhaps reach out to a qualified individual for guidance . One thing we might take away from these unprecedented times is that our health is fragile. Lets begin to work on improving nutrition, physical activity, sleep and/or stress management, and by doing so, take ownership for our own health and wellness. Together, we can be stronger, both mentally and physically for whatever life throws at us.
Sweet Dreams!

World Music Day! “Music was my first love”, so sang John Miles in 1976…but what does music mean to you? 21st June is World Music Day - it’s also the day that the UK is due to be fully liberated from the restrictions imposed by COVID (fingers crossed of course!) as well as being the Summer Solstice. Will you be listening to a few tunes to celebrate, or is music not high on your list of likes? Music has always been an integral part of being human. Musical instruments have been around for thousands of years, the earliest known being flutes, made out of mammoth bone, and dating back an incredible 43,000 years! Even before that impressively early period in prehistory, it isn’t a stretch to imagine our early ancestors using the power of their voices to create music. Not all of us are blessed with amazingly tuneful voices, yet most of us are able to recognise and enjoy that skill in others. I like to think of my ancestor, umpteen generations removed, sitting around the fire humming along and tapping her feet as someone else sings a song (I do have a vivid imagination though…curse of the writer!). Music certainly has some sort of power over us, hearing a song from ‘back in the day’, can instantly transport you in time. And have you ever noticed that you can remember the lyrics of a song from years ago and yet struggle to remember where you put the car keys? I know I have! This connection between music and memory is why it is often used to help people living with dementia, and in care homes in general. For a truly heart warming example of how music memory
30
remains long after other memories have faded, type ‘dementia ballet dancer’ into Google and prepare to be amazed (have a tissue handy!). Staying with memory, well the mind anyway - one of the best ways to ensure your brain remains in tip top condition for as long as possible is to learn to play an instrument. You may never be a virtuoso, but the very act of learning to play helps to form new neural paths in your brain (it’s called neuroplasticity) it’s like exercise for your grey matter. If you want to see if there are any World Music Day events near you, I recommend you checking out www. makemusicday.co.uk/events. You can create and add your own events to that site too - so if there isn’t anything local to you, why not think about organising a get together? It needn’t be big, expensive, and flashy - it could just be a concert on your local village green or in the pub carpark. It would be a great way to get your neighbours and friends together after what has been a horrible year or so. So, returning to the opening sentence of this article…what does music mean to you? Visit our Facebook page and let us know! These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and
We first featured this walk in Christmas 2014! So, we thought it was time to revisit and we were really glad we did. It’s a great walk, making use of the Rowthorne Trail, Teversal Trail and Pleasley Pit Country Park before heading off to explore the countryside around Glapwell. The doggies loved it as they were able to explore off lead on the trails and if you are looking for a stop off point the café at Pleasley Pit is due to reopen by the time this magazine arrives with you.
6-mile circular walk near Rowthorne Village A moderate walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2½ hours. Whilst a large part of the walk is trails and paths there are some fields to cross with uneven and potentially muddy sections so a good pair of boots or wellies is a must, especially at this time of year. There are a few sections of road, so please take care and keep dogs on leads at these times.

The Other Lambretta Boys – pt3
I’ve written a bit about my Lambretta days but one place has hardly had a mention until now. The revered Regal at Ripley - What a place it was...maybe it still is...but I somehow doubt that its character has survived. My SX200 could have found its own way there every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday night. As long as you could afford the entrance fee age was no barrier to admittance. In fact, the only real barrier to entry was the inimitable Sean Fields. If ever a man was suited to his job it was Sean. He had served his apprenticeship as a doorman under a few uncompromising characters and Sean revelled in his education. Through the evening Sean got angrier and angrier and only started to calm down when he’d had his “fix”. His drug of choice was unarmed combat….Sean is a lovely man with a huge smile and a heart as big as the world’s biggest bucket Things weren’t quite the same 50 years ago!! Once inside, the action began - Soul music on the decks. The snack bar in the bottom corner. The semi dangerous toilets. And, of course, the bar. If you could see over the top you were old enough to get served. And my god...the s*** we used to drink! I had a spell of drinking black velvet with rum ‘n’ black chasers. You can imagine what that looked like when it made it’s ritual encore some time later. As you get older your mind plays tricks - at least mine does - but I have a few mental videos that will never leave me. The first is of a young man named Martin Inott. I remember him surfing across the dance floor with his
40
“heel - toe” dance. If there hadn’t been a wall I swear he’d have kept going all the way to Heanor. •
Bob and Marcia
•
Dave and Ansell Collins
•
Chairmen of The Board
•
Donnie Elbert and so many more
Then the last dance, something like Jimmy Ruffin - the last chance to make an impression!! Then came the absolute magnificence of the business plan, throw you out, close for half an hour then charge you to go back in!!! Genius. My SX200 days were coming to an end. People sometimes ask me “what is the best vehicle you ever owned?” I often reply “my Lambo” without mentioning that it wasn’t the type of “Lambo” they imagined. It was better than that, it was a malfunctioning, temperamental, unreliable, life enhancing, smile creating piece of Italian style that changed my life. Bring on the Mini Cooper days!!

Book Review For anyone still dreaming about summer holidays abroad in these uncertain times, the writer Donna Leon is a gift. Her high-end Brunetti crime stories are set in Italy - Venice in particular. And alongside unfailingly good stories, Ms Leon is brilliant on the Italian way of life, the love of food, the love of people, the warmth, and the glittering sunlight. The series started nearly 30 years ago and Guido Brunetti has investigated a new crime every year in the city of canals and carnival. As police comissario he takes on everything from the mafia to the church, opera and people just generally behaving badly. Donna Leon has lived in Venice for 30 years and has millions of fans worldwide – she’s been translated into more than 30 languages and some of her books have been turned into TV series The latest Brunetti is Transient Desires, but to be fair you could start at the beginning of the series Death at La Fenice and half the fun is watching the way Brunetti deals with the changing times over the years. It is a series to fall in love with. And if you’ve already got Venice on your bucket list, it will whet your appetite even more

Mike’us sings M
This month George regales us with the tale of the larger-than-life Wee Willie. Not so much a tall tale this time… Mike is always glad to hear from you at mike. musings@outlook.com
Another of George’s Footballing Tales (how Hilcote became the Hacademicals)
When the Hilcote club was formed in 1868, most of the players were young God fearing Christian men who attended the local Methodist chapel. As a result, they were known as the Weslyans, and remained so until 1885. Whilst strictly amateur in the early years, as they became successful they realised that they were increasingly competing with professional teams and decided to follow suit. They began to attract better players by offering cash incentives plus a Sunday dinner each week, courtesy of Mildred Mycroft (see May’s edition of The Voice for more detail) One of the incoming players was Willie Robertson, a veteran of the 1st Zulu Campaign, where, it was rumoured, he had single-handedly held off 416 natives at the battle of Rorke’s Drift. He subsequently returned to his native Scotland, and whilst working as a night soilman during the week, earned more playing football at the weekends. His reputation as a tough winger spread to England, and many clubs tried to sign him. However, having invited him down to Hilcote, arranging for Mildred to feed him that day was said to have been a master-stroke, and he duly became a Weslyan. Somewhat diminutive – less than five foot tall – and forever known as Wee Willie by the Hilcote faithful, Robertson was an immediate star. Playing out wide on either the right or left touchline, he was tricky and would often bamboozle his man two or three times before sending over the perfect cross for a grateful teammate to put away for a goal.
Footballers these days are familiar with the phrase ‘nutmeg’ which describes successfully passing the ball between an opposing player’s legs. Well Willie was the first ever player to master this skill. In his case however, he’d send the ball past the player and then run straight through their legs himself. Embarrassing for defenders it may have been, but the Hilcote fans lapped it up. Word got round quickly and opposing teams were often advised that the only way to stop Hilcote was to ‘get’ Wee Willie Robertson ‘early doors’, and put him out of the game. The ploy never worked because Robertson was, to coin a phrase, ‘as tough as old boots’. His lack of height may have limited his ability to look his opponent in the eye or give the equivalent of a ‘Glasgow kiss’, but many a player ended up with a broken kneecap after Willie had deliberately ‘nutted’ it or a painful shin after a good whack. Whilst not the type of play for which Hilcote Weslyans had previously been noted, it was successful and soon spread throughout the team and they became known as a bunch of win at all cost cloggers. The Hilcote hierarchy revelled in this reputation and in recognition of Wee Willie’s strengths, and the part he had played in their success, decided to drop Weslyan for a new suffix based upon Robertson’s home town. Like you dear reader, it came as no surprise to me to hear that he came from Hamilton.

Gardener’s Calendar Despite our chilly spring most gardens are bursting with life. You can start to think about pruning early flowering shrubs such as forsythia, currant and mock orange to ensure you get a good show of flowers next year. Leave it later and the flowers are less likely. Take out diseased stems to ground level and cut back generally to a lower strongly growing stem. Cut back a quarter of older stems to the base. Nasturtiums and night scented stock are among the seeds you can still be planting now, along with other “companion” plants which will help keep pests away. These usually have a strong scent, which confuse the insects which will damage your prize plants, whether fruit and veg or the likes of roses. So you can use nasturtiums alongside beans, lavender for carrots, calendula and mint for tomatoes, although watch out that the mint doesn’t take over your plot. Artemesia attracts things like ladybirds which see off aphids.
r
If you’ve left your lawn to grow long in May to encourage wildflowers but now want to cut it, do it in stages. If weeds you didn’t have also popped up, remember that weedkiller will kill the wildflowers too!
Top Tip If you’re looking to attract pollinators such as bees as hoverflies to your garden, try the likes of sage and borage, heliotrope cosmos, and salvias.

The Splendour of the Red Tree from Turkey
All across the Peak District there is most stunning and splendid wild sight emerging as the ‘wild rhododendron’ bursts into bloom. This is the bane of conservationists but much-loved by the public (and a lot of wildlife too). Many people don’t realise this is an ‘alien’, exotic, or non-native plant, and those who do, think it comes from the Himalayas. This spectacular shrub is Rhododendron ponticum or literally ‘The Red Tree from Turkey’; so yes, there is a clue there. Most rhododendrons do come from the Himalayas from the Sikkim and Bhutan across into China; with a few in North America, a small number in Europe, and a lot in tropical forests. However, our ‘wild’ shrub is from Europe and around the Mediterranean.
Landowners loved it for shelter, ornament, and especially game cover for shoots. Many planted it as wildlife cover and its stunning flowers, and it was extensively used as root-stock for less hardy prize rhododendrons brought to Britain by the Empire’s plant hunters. Collectors travelled the globe in search of the exotic, and it burst onto and across the Peak’s countryside for 200 years spreading unnoticed and uncontrolled. This is one of the most successful of our invasive alien plants and talk of attempted total eradication is pie-inthe-sky. There’s been ‘talk’ of effective control for sixty years or more by forestry experts, and rhododendron can be dealt with on individual sites. However, there is no effective strategy or policy to stop the further spread across the landscape. Personally I cannot see government spending the huge amount of cash that would be needed and also I don’t imagine everybody would be agreeable or co-operative. Many of the seed-plants are in small, private gardens and I just don’t think people will take to them being ‘eradicated’. This plant can cause a head-ache for site managers but gardeners and many of the resident and visiting public love it.
This flowering event becomes a natural spectacular which in places like the Peak District and Snowdonia in particular, presents with stunning vistas and views. This is an annual happening for which people travel miles to see and has become a tourism attraction. Covering woods, heaths, moorland edge, and old parklands with a blanket of red and purple to mauve flowers, the impact is dramatic. Outside this peak of flowering the shrub is far less obvious and is often unnoticed. Invading natural habitats it clearly impacts on native wildlife but not always negatively. However, there is a twist in this story for a plant often demonised as an alien invader. It was native in Britain between the recent glacial periods but somehow never returned when icy chills mellowed around 15,000 years ago. It was effectively banished to the far flung tips of Europe and Near Asia (Turkey, Lebanon, Portugal, and Spain), until 1763 when plant collectors brought seeds back to London’s Kew Gardens. From there as they say, the rest is history. Professor Ian D. Rotherham of Sheffield Hallam University is a researcher, writer and broadcaster on wildlife and environmental issues in the Peak District and elsewhere. If there is one thing we allotmenteers take for granted it is the amazing process of photosynthesis fundamental to all life. I hear LBLAA members chatting about the weather (too dry/too wet/too cold/too hot), when to plant their chitted potatoes, what nutrients to put on the soil, what needs lime (did you know peas like a sprinkling of lime when being sown?), non-digging v digging, how to keep pigeons off the brassicas, what seeds to plant when, how to avoid carrot-fly, etc., but I never hear them discussing the details of photosynthesis, or why C4 plants like sweetcorn can tolerate drought conditions better than C3 plants like spinach or lettuce. I sometimes sit and gaze in awe at the different shaped leaves of tomatoes, chard, carrots, leeks, potatoes, radishes, pumpkins, squash, courgettes, rhubarb, etc, imagining the photosynthesis that is going on in the chloroplasts where electrons in chlorophyll get excited by blue and red light. This is the energy-harvesting stage of photosynthesis, the other stage being the reduction of carbon dioxide to sugar in the Calvin cycle, making use of the energy absorbed by the chlorophyll. The oxygen is released to sustain life and the sugars are used by plants for energy, cell division and growth and to make the cellulose of plant cell walls and starch, a stored energy source. In C3 plants photosynthesis takes place only once in mesophyll cells. In C4 plants photosynthesis takes place twice - in mesophyll cells as well as in bundle sheath cells giving them an advantage in drought conditions. On top of this plants need nutrients – the major ones being nitrogen to make amino acids for proteins, nucleic acids and chlorophyll, phosphorus vital for photosynthesis and growth and potassium involved in controlling CO2 and water uptake via stomata among other functions. To grow your own C3 and C4 plants at Leabrooks (Bridle Lane) Allotment Association contact Mick the plot bailiff on 07725402033 and check our website at www. lblaa.co.uk
