Ever thought of lifesaving as a sport? Competitive lifesaving is a rapidly growing sport with competitions at National, European and World level. Water filled manikins are towed, carried, and dived for. Accurate rope throw and retrieve of a swimmer, fin races, obstacle races, surfboard races, sea swims, beach sprints, flag races, open still water swimming all test core fitness and strength.

At RASCALS we teach skills in water safety, accident prevention, survival, rescue, life support, emergency aftercare and first aid. Our classes are delivered under the accredited and progressive Rookie system for children under 12 years and the Survive and Save Programme for Seniors.

Each Rookie lifesaver receives a Rookie Lifeguard progress book where their progress is tracked through the Bronze, Silver and Gold Lifeguard Awards. They are awarded certificates, badges and stickers as they progress through the stages. Rookie Festivals (junior competitions) encourage children to showcase their lifesaving skills and compete against other clubs in a very friendly competitive environment.

For Seniors, the Survive and Save programme includes both traditional lifesaving and competitive speed lifesaving. RASCALS have a very impressive record in competition. The Yorkshire Speeds Championships, October 2019, saw the Seniors topping the leader board and awarded the Top Club trophy. In March 2020, the RLSS National Speed Championships

saw RASCALS lifesavers again, come top of the medal board with 38 medals, including 19 gold. Our Seniors and our coaches work hard, and it pays off!

Now, after being postponed last year, the attention of our Senior squad has once again turned to the Lifesaving World Championships planned for Italy September 2022….with various other competitions along the way!

Over the summer months, in addition to pool training, we have a number of Bridlington beach training sessions open to all RASCALS lifesavers. Great fun for all involved – just don’t forget the sunscreen!

Lifesaving is fun, inclusive and social. If you are a competitive swimmer and/or would like to expand your swimming activities or try something new, please contact us.
