Brits are a nation that still seems to embrace the “stiff upper lip” of the past, mental ill health is often not talked about, or worse, dismissed with a “pull your socks” up throw away comment. To some, it may appear that mental ill health is a new phenomenon - I don’t think it is, I just think that successive younger generations are more able to talk openly about their thoughts, feelings and emotions. They aren’t “snowflakes”, “wimps”, or whatever other derogatory term is applied, they are simply more in tune with themselves and aren’t afraid to express this.
Older generations were brought up not to broadcast emotions or talk about issues that negatively impacted them. Mental health was seen as something to hide, something to be ashamed of, to deny, to not seek help for. And, should they be brave enough to admit to feeling mentally unstable, the best they could hope for would be pills - antidepressants and antipsychotics - or even an enforced stay in a mental asylum.
I wonder how many suicides could have been prevented if people had received the correct kind of assistance early on? How many marriages could have been saved? How many children not had to witness violence (emotional and physical) in the home? Keeping a stiff upper lip has never really been the best way to deal with anything, has it? OK, it’s perfectly acceptable to not want to broadcast your feelings to every Tom, Dick, and Harry, but pretending you don’t have a problem when you do… well, that way madness leads - literally in some cases.
Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, run Time to Talk Day, it is the nation’s biggest mental health conversation and this year it is on Thursday 3 February.
Why Time to Talk Day is important
• One in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year. • Everyone should be able to feel comfortable talking about mental health – whenever they like.
• Talking about mental health helps to create supportive communities where we can talk openly about mental health and feel empowered to seek help when we need it.
• Opening up the conversation about mental health problems is important – by talking about it, we can support ourselves and others.
It may be too late for you to organise anything for this year now, but you can at least promise to be more aware of the impact of mental health on those around you. Talk openly to family, friends and colleagues about your own mental health and encourage them to do likewise. Maybe you could consider becoming a volunteer at Mind or Rethink, or help raise much needed funds for these charities?
Mental health does affect all of us in some shape or form and it’s way past time for the associated stigma to be wiped out…we live in the 21st century, not the early part of the 20th - times have changed, attitudes have changed, WE have changed.
