The story of an East European in London looking for a living so he can send money to his family is as old as the hills and as new as today.

The Road Home by Rose Tremain was written several years ago, long before current world events. But it clearly depicts how, even in times of peace, it can be a mind-blowingly difficult prospect.

The novel centres around widower Lev, who has left his mother looking after his daughter back home. In London, Lev’s experiences of a new world are largely overwhelmed by the need for his food, shelter and employment.

It may sound like a grim read. And while it’s a serious novel, there’s a great deal of warmth. This is a story about ordinary people in what for them are extraordinary times. Lev is, like most of us, flawed, but that doesn’t stop him building good friendships, doing good stuff and sometimes relying on the kindness of strangers.

There are a few sly digs at society and the kind of social gatherings which bring you out in a sweat just to think about them, but this book isn’t about politics or society, just people, humanity and hope.

The Road Home is a story of survival and aspirations. Above all, it is about the people you meet and how they shape your journey and life.

Pure & Simple Tarot

Hi, my name is Jane and I am the owner of Pure and Simple Tarot. I believe that Tarot is a powerful tool that can affect real change in our lives and answer all those empowering questions when we are feeling unsure. Today I have many packs of cards and will always find the perfect deck to suit your questions. I also have some lovely Oracle cards that will give you another depth.

I first started using tarot cards many years ago, after visiting a psychic medium, she informed me I should be the one doing the reading and all I needed was a bit of training. She handed me her tarot cards and told me to deal, telling me to say whatever came into my mind. From that first rather strange and frightening experience, I was totally hooked.

Pure & Simple Tarot

I love to work alongside crystals and I am happy to advise, which are the best ones for you on any specific occasion. Before my readings I will always clear my space, set my intention and do my meditation. Meditations are a wonderful way of relaxing your mind and clearing your thoughts. This is something I am able to practice and teach.

I am able to do Online readings, Zoom and I am now restarting face to face. If you would like to arrange a reading, please contact me via my email or website. I will be more than happy to arrange an appointment.

I will respond to you ASAP but please check your SPAM folder for responses.

Hi, my name is Jane. I am a certified Tarot Advisor based in Nottinghamshire. I am currently doing online readings. Together we could work on those life questions you have always wanted to know.

WALK & TALK

If the thought of sitting across a psychotherapist sharing your inner most secrets fills you with dread you may wish to find alternatives like walking therapy that can seem less daunting. What is Walking Therapy?

It is walking side-by-side with a qualified counsellor in a public area such as a park or woodland. It is a type of ‘movement therapy’ and as the old adage goes - ‘if you could walk a mile in my shoes’, figuratively the therapist is imagining walking in your shoes - also known as empathy - and literally walking a mile and more!

What are the benefits of Walking Therapy?

Being outside in nature is therapeutic in itself, not to mention the vitamin D from sunshine, but that nature has a calming effect. Practicing mindfulness - noticing the sound of the birds or the crunching sound as you walk through leaves, the feel of the sun on your back or the wind against your face, the smell of the trees and flowers around you. Taking the time to be totally present, completely in the moment is easier when you are in nature. If you can notice your surroundings easier then perhaps you can go inside and notice your thoughts and emotions as you speak through what is troubling you.

Keeping active, such as walking has been shown to help reduce levels of stress, depression and anxiety. The other added benefit is that you are multitasking - exercising your body and exercising your mind/heart/soul through talking therapy.

How Does it work?

You book a session with a qualified therapist and agree to meet at agreed time and location. There are a few ideal walks in the Kirkby-in-Ashfield/Annesley area, such as Portland Park. When you meet with your therapist it will be in a public area - but to everyone else, it just looks like two friends meeting for a chat, walking along the country lanes and green spaces.

Anita Day provides walking therapy in a variety of local parks across Nottinghamshire as well as traditional face-to-face and online/telephone counselling. Please contact her on 07784 887 395 or email anita@gooddaycounselling.co.uk for more information and to book your session.

Talking therapy via phone, online, walk & talk, and face to face available at locations throughout Ashfield and Nottinghamshire.

£35 PER SESSION

My Experience:

During my placement as a student counsellor, I worked in a variety of counselling agencies – from general adult counselling, to young people counselling, counselling for those affected by alcohol and substance abuse, and also counselling for adults who experienced sexual abuse as a child.

After I qualified, I have continued to give back to the local community as a counsellor with various causes - helping people with cancer, drug/ alcohol misuse and sexual abuse to name a few. In my experience I have seen clients with a range of issues from bereavement and grief, to relationship, CSA, exam pressures, self-esteem and self-worth, mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, hearing voices, suicidal ideation, and trauma.

Mansfield HC Look To The Future

Mansfield Hockey Club are a friendly and competitive club, based at Kingsway Park in Kirkby in Ashfield. We cater to members of all abilities and of ages 13+, with our oldest member being 78 years old!

There have been some tough results for the first XI in recent weeks. With key players missing at different times the team has struggled to finish off games and have dropped points in games they would have gone on to win earlier in the season. A recent game against Ramgarhia was a prime example. Having fought back from 2 goals down to level the scores we then went on to lose 4-2 despite playing some great hockey at times. Elsewhere in the club the 2nd XI have had a great run of results, winning 3 and drawing 3 of their last 6 games. This reflects the fantastic progress of a team which contains a number of young players who have come through the clubs development programme. Other results further down the club have been mixed, which possibly reflects some of the difficulties faced by a growing club. The membership at the club is increasing and we are able to field and impressive 5 teams each weekend, but this brings some growing pains and despite the fantastic youth development programme, low fees and excellent coaching available, sometimes the squads are stretched thin due to injuries and absences.

The club is always looking for new blood, so if you are interested why not get in touch?

As someone who joined the club a couple of years ago, after years away from the game, I cannot speak highly enough of everyone involved. if you’re anything like I was, overweight, bored and wanting to add a bit of fun and exercise back into your life, then I can only encourage you to give it a go. For young players we have the Mansfield Aztecs but we have quite a few members who didn’t take the game up until later in life and now wonder what they did on Saturdays before hockey! So it’s never to late to get started. The season may be ending soon but in recent years the club has run social hockey sessions after the end of the season and there are always summer hockey leagues and tournaments, which give you a chance to get fit for next year and hone your skills. So there is never a bad time to get started!

We are always on the lookout for new members so please contact us on any of the following channels if you are interested in joining!
