VOICE

spotted mushing some huskies somewhere in the UK!

What do I have to talk to you about this month? Lots has happened but I can’t fit it all in! Well, firstly, the whole team (with the exception of Paul, who had it in January), fell foul of the dreaded Covid. We all said that we’ve done so well to dodge it up to this point but we’ve all had varying levels of illness with it; our golden oldies from the over 50 club were hit with the worst symptoms and we lost them for 5 days (alongside our young gun, Hayleigh). Danielle made a valiant effort but fell at Beeches Brook and took to her bed from Tuesday to Friday! However, despite sharing a small little portacabin and van with them, our distribution team swatted it away like a fly and had no ill effects whatsoever. Liam and I had, what we thought was a cold! It was only when everyone else went down that we realised that it may not have been a cold!! Anyway, we’re all back & fighting fit now, which is a far cry from what the words ‘we’ve had covid’ used to do to us all 2yrs ago!! We’d have had a plague cross placed on the outside of building! Anyway, now we’re all covid free, we thought it was time to expand our team a little. But firstly, we lost Maggi to retirement! I didn’t question her decision based on the fact that she was so busy in her day-to-day life that she barely had time to work! So, I don’t worry about her falling foul of the sofa & tellybox as she was last

Sarah has joined our Voice and Artliff team this month on our customer account management side and, as we haven’t scared her off yet, I think she might quite like us! Lisa has already scheduled some time to work on her little avatar, so that’s it now, no backsies! In other news, May brings about my youngest cousins wedding. He is about 7yrs younger than me and I can remember holding him when he was newly born. Cute as a button he was, age isn’t always kind to everyone (only joking ) but he has bagged himself the loveliest partner in crime as his soul mate and as self-appointed chief bridesmaid, I can’t wait to share their special day – it’s been a long time coming!!

😉

With a wedding and the holiday season beginning, I’m hoping for a quieter May but somehow, I doubt it!! See you next month,

x Emily And all the VOICE MAGAZINES TEAM

Platinum Celebrations Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth on 6 February 1952 following the death of her father George IV. Although King George had been ill for some time, his death whilst Princess Elizabeth was on a tour of Kenya with her husband Prince Philip, must have shaken her to the core. She was a mother of two young children (Charles and Anne) and her father was a mere 56 years old when he died, in normal circumstances she could have expected him to reign for many more years, but instead she was thrust into the spotlight as Queen at the tender age of 26. The Queen’s coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. The ceremony was conducted by Dr Geoffrey Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury and, at the Queen’s request, it became the first televised coronation, viewed by more than 20 million around the globe. This coming June we are celebrating her Majesty’s 70 years as Queen, making her the longest reigning monarch not only in the UK, but placing her at number 4 in the list of the world’s longest reigning sovereigns. By the time of the Jubilee Bank Holiday on 3 June she will have moved into 3rd position, only a few days behind Rama IX of Thailand who reigned for 70 years, 126 days. To put things in perspective Rama, and the first placed long time monarch, Louis XIV of France (72 years, 110 days as king), ascended to their thrones at the age of 4 and 5 respectively! There have been momentous changes in the way we live since her Majesty became Queen. In 1952 the world was still very much living in the shadows of World War II, in the UK sugar, butter, cheese, margarine, cooking fat, bacon, meat and tea were all still rationed. TVs were still uncommon in the average household; men were very much the breadwinners (after the war years of women in the workplace); homosexuality was illegal; decimalisation hadn’t yet happened; the

6

death penalty was still in force; the race for space hadn’t yet begun; Watson and Crick hadn’t yet published their discovery of the structure of DNA, and foods like spaghetti and curry were unknown to most people! Houses had no central heating, no double glazing, no fitted kitchens with shiny time saving appliances, and owning one’s own house was not taken for granted. The average cost of a new house around 1952 (lots of house building was taking place to replace homes destroyed during the war) was £1,891 (around £65,224 in today’s money) and the average salary was £10 a week (roughly £339). In 2022 we take so much for granted, don’t we? Warm houses, hot water at the turn of a tap, a huge variety and choice of foodstuffs, eating out, holidays overseas, etc. etc… are our lives anymore content though? The only thing unchanged since 1952 is her Majesty Queen Elizabeth - raise a glass in celebration of her record breaking reign!

All Around the Shire Recollections of a Simpler Time Our glorious Queen will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee this year and we shall celebrate with her. She became Queen at the age of 25 on the death of her father, King George VI, on 6th February 1952. Her coronation was held the following year on 2nd June 1953. It took 16 months to prepare for the historic occasion.

Throughout the land and the commonwealth, celebrations were held including street parties. “Peace Parties” for children had been started in 1919 to celebrate the end of World War 1. For the Queen’s coronation in 1953 communities came together once again to provide a memorable party. Britain was still struggling to recover from the second World War and many foods were still rationed including sugar, butter, cheese, margarine, cooking fats and meat. Sweets, eggs and cream had only just come ‘off ration’ in February, March and April of 1953. Bunting, music, sandwiches, jelly and ice cream, tea, squash, beer and fancy dress competitions

16

ensured that every child who attended had a memory of this special event. In living rooms where there was a small black and white television, family and neighbours crammed to watch the procession and the ceremony take place at Westminster Abbey. Many children were given a coronation mug at school, but coins, medals, ceramics, pencils, photographs were also available. The dish of Coronation Chicken was specially created for the coronation reception. This year of celebrations will also be memorable for many and will give a much-needed boost to the morale of the nation as it did 70 years ago. God bless the Queen!

THE SILVER JUBILEE - 1977 The Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth marked the 25th Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the thrones of both the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth Nations. It was celebrated with large-scale parties and parades throughout the United Kingdom throughout 1977, culminating in June with the official “Jubilee Days”, held to coincide with the Queen’s Official Birthday. The anniversary date itself was commemorated in Church services across the land on 6 February 1977, and celebrations continued throughout the month and beyond. June saw street parties spring up in almost every street, town and village throughout the country and Alfreton was no exception with many a street being closed to traffic to enable the celebrations to go ahead. Certainly, the one at Derwent Grove, Alfreton,

22

where I lived was a huge community effort with the Street decorated and a long table laden with food and drink: Prospect Street in Alfreton was another venue and fortunately we have a number of photographs which have stood the test of time. You may even recognise yourself!

On the 28th July 1977, the Queen came to Derbyshire and visited the Police Headquarters at Butterley where she was greeted by many hundreds of local schoolchildren before travelling up through Alfreton on her way to Chesterfield. The Rotary Club of Alfreton weighed in by burying a Time Capsule at the Watchorn which is to remain in place until 2077. Quite what will be made of the contents by then we can only guess!

Fancy a Cocktail? Cocktail - it’s a strange word for a mix of “mainly spirits, water, sugar, and bitters”, don’t you agree? I decided to have a look to see if there’s any traceable etymology and here’s what I found. The Egg-Cup Theory: one source of the word cocktail is said to be from the mispronunciation of the French word coquetier (pronounced cocktay in English) which means egg-cup! The story goes that in the late 18th century Antoine Amédée Peychaud, a New Orleans apothecary who invented Peychaud bitters, served brandy with these bitters in egg-cups. These teeny drinks earned the moniker coquetier which became mangled to cocktail. The Dregs Theory: In days of old (and possibly even now in less salacious drinking establishments!) a landlord would mix together the dregs of the almost empty barrels and resell the resultant mixture at a discount. This doesn’t make sense as a derivative for the word cocktail unless you know that dregs were commonly referred to as tailings, and that the tap (spigot) of a barrel was sometimes called a cock. The Horse’s Tail Theory: A horse with a docked tail was often described as a “cock tail” in the 17th century because the docked tail apparently resembled a rooster’s short spikey tail. Working horses such as those that pulled coaches, and horse used for hunting often had their tails docked for practical purposes. Thoroughbreds however did not have docked tails, meaning that if an “ordinary” horse was entered into a race its “cock tail” made it easy to spot. The connection between this theory and cocktails as drinks is pretty tenuous in my opinion. Race horses with cocked tails were sometimes noted to be friskier than undocked thoroughbreds (which seems odd) and so “cock your tail up” became a saying. Another version says that a cocked

tail showed a horse had been changed, in the same way that adding other ingredients to a spirit changed the drink. Horse racing and drinking go together like gin and tonic, so the theory holds that the word “cock tail” was adopted to mean an adulterated (changed) spirit. The word cocktail wasn’t really defined as we know it until 1806, when The Balance and Columbian Repository of Hudson, New York (an early newspaper) , pinned the cocktail down to what we follow today: “a stimulating liquor composed of any kind of sugar, water and bitters”. If you look online today there are literally thousands of different cocktail recipes, but the International Bartenders Association (IBA) only recognises 77 in their annual World Cocktail Competition. Tastes in cocktails varies around the world, in 2021 in the UK Just Eat for Business found that Espresso Martinis were the most popular concoction. The US seems to favour tequila based Margaritas; the French love a Mimosa; Germans apparently love a U-Boot (beer and a shot glass filled with vodka that is sunk into the glass of beer!); in Spain, Sangria takes the top spot and in Italy it’s a Bellini. What’s your favourite?

Vintage Rambles a with raf lake and F

This is a great walk for the summer months ahead. We originally featured it in 2015 and there have been a couple of small changes but the route is great and there is a lovely mix of countryside with some cracking views. The dogs also loved this walk and even found a stream to splash around in and there was plenty of opportunity to go off lead so it got their double paw of approval. 5½ MILE CIRCULAR FROM GRASSMOOR COUNTRY PARK.

A gentle walk for you and your dog. This medium length walk should 2 1/2 hours. There are some sections of uneven terrain and a number of stiles to cross. There are a couple of busy road sections, so please take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear for the conditions.

START: GRASSMOOR COUNTRY PARK, BIRKIN LANE, OFF B6039 BETWEEN TEMPLE NORMANTON AND GRASSMOOR. 1.

From the car park standing with your back to the road and keeping a pond on your right, continue straight ahead to join a trail. Bear right and pass a second pond on your right.

2.

After the second pond you will begin to gently descend. Upon reaching a large metal gate, take the path to the right of the gate and continue to pass through a small metal gate. After a very short distance and prior to a main road turn left onto a signposted footpath.

3.

Follow the path for a short distance and at a marker post on the edge of the golf course, bear left. At another marker post keep ahead to enter some trees with the golf course on your right and a fence on your left. Go up some steps and when the fence on your left ends, continue gently uphill keeping the golf course on your

right. 4.

After passing a bunker on your right and reaching a marker post on your left, bear right to cut across the golf course, taking care for any flying golf balls! Pass through a line of trees and ‘hole 8’ on your left and then follow the path round to the left to gently descend. Cross a gravel path and keep ahead, passing a pond on your right. Take care crossing the fairway to head to a wooden footbridge and pass by the club house and car park on your right.

5.

Continue straight along the golf course driveway until reaching a main road. At the main road turn right and continue until reaching a roundabout.

Mon to Fri – 9am – 4.30pm

Sat – 8:30am – 12pm

Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads Seals Fodder Room, The Mill, High Street, Swanwick, Derbyshire

Cross straight over the roundabout and then turn immediately left into some trees along a signposted footpath. After passing through the trees continue straight along a lane. After a short distance, the lane bends sharp left. At this point turn right through a gap to cross an open field.

7.

After crossing over 4 stiles you will cross an open field whilst gently climbing uphill. Upon reaching a hedgerow stretching out ahead of you, continue straight with this hedge on your right. Where this hedgerow ends, continue straight now with a different hedge on your left. After a short distance, pass through a gap and continue straight with a hedge on both sides.

8.

9.

10.

Continue to cross over a stile and then cross a field with a hedge on your left. At the far side pass through a metal gate and then turn right onto a single track tarmac road. At the end of the road, turn right along a main road. After a short distance turn left through a signposted gate and into a field. Cross the field with the hedge on your left. At the far side go to the right of the houses in front of you and pass through a wooden gate into a field. Cross the field with a hedge on your left. After a short distance pass through another wooden gate and continue straight with houses on your left and a fence on your right. Where the path bends sharp left continue straight through a gap in the fence and into a field. Continue keeping the hedge on your left. Eventually cross over a double stile, cross over a main road and cross over another stile into a field.

11.

Continue straight with a hedge on your left. Where the hedge ends, continue straight towards a telegraph pole. Just beyond the telegraph pole, turn left over a stile and follow a path between two buildings to a main road.

12.

Turn left along the road for a short distance and then turn right along a single-track tarmac road that is signposted for a footpath. Cross over a dual carriageway and then turn immediate right down some steps into a field.

13.

At the bottom of the steps, turn right keeping the hedge on your right. After a very short distance, bear left along the boundary of the field. Continue until you reach a hedgerow on your left. At this point turn 90 degrees left and then continue straight keeping the hedgerow on your right.

14.

With a small wooded area on your right continue over a lane and keep ahead to keep a fence on your right. Continue to pass by a pylon on your right and then head gently downhill until reaching a river. At this point turn right keeping the river on your left.

15.

Continue to pass through a wooden gate, keeping the river on your left at all times. Pass over a wooden footbridge then turn immediate right, then left and continue straight with a hedge on your left.

16.

After a short distance, the border of the field that you are in bears slightly right. At this point, continue straight for a very short distance and then turn right onto a farm track. Pass by a pylon on your right and continue along the track until reaching a main road.

17.

Turn right along the main road and cross over a dual carriageway. Continue straight for a short distance and then the main road bends around to the left. Just after the left turn, bear right along a signposted bridleway.

18.

Continue straight along the bridleway until reaching a road. Turn right along the road and head steeply downhill.

19.

When nearing the bottom of the hill and just prior to a metal fence and pond on your right, turn right. Pass immediately through a gap in the metal fence and continue to skirt around the edge of the pond which is now on your left. Cross over a wooden footbridge between two ponds and continue until you reach the car park.

New Puppy Shopping List Adding a new furry friend into your family can be a big step, and it’s important to ensure you have the correct items at home to make the transition as smooth as possible for your pup. Here at Scarsdale, we have listed a few essential things for a shopping list: 1. Bedding • Puppies will have accidents so make sure bedding is washable! Specially made blankets like vet beds help to keep your puppy dry if they’re accident prone. Also keep size in mind as puppies can grow rapidly. • Lots of owner’s crate train puppies so they have a safe haven in the house. If you decide to do this, check they can comfortably stand up and stretch out, and seek advice on how to train them correctly.

2. Collars and Leads • Your puppy won’t be able to go for walks until it’s fully vaccinated, but they should wear a collar with a name tag. Also consider if you’ll be using a collar or harness for walks, so training can gradually be introduced. Also, bear is mind the breed, for example short nosed dogs like pugs would benefit from harness walking to minimise pressure on the windpipe.

3. Toys • Playing with toys is an important part of your puppy’s training and development. Don’t cut corners here and use household objects! Sticks can splinter and cause injuries, whilst socks can cause blockages of the gastrointestinal tract.

• It’s a good idea to consider toy size too, a chew toy for a Chihuahua may be too small and soft for a Labrador. Feel free to seek advice if you’re unsure!

4. Food and Water Bowls • There’s a wide range available, with some even designed for particular breeds. For example, bowls designed to slow down eating, or to stop long eared dogs’ ears dangling in water and food!

6. Dog Appeasing Pheromone • This is made by Adaptil. It’s a synthetic copy of the natural comforting pheromone released by the mother to reassure her puppies, so it’s ideal to help your puppy settle into your new home. Do you have a new pup? Scarsdale provide a 4-week puppy training course, providing a fun and safe environment for your puppy to learn. Each week will guide you through multiple topics to help your puppy become a well mannered and confident dog! if you’d like to book onto our next course why not give us a call - 01332 554422

W E I V A 'C' Sixty-Odd Years Ago in Somercotes

My dad was born in Somercotes. More specifically Coupland Place. Does anyone remember it? He used to tell me that he could tell whereabouts in Somercotes someone came from by their accent! Most of it was knocked down many years ago but, curiously, the developers left a few houses standing. My grandparents house is one of the few. I remember it well. As you walked down the entry and turned right you arrived at my grandparents house. Next door to them were the Simpsons...no not those Simpsons! In my memory they had three boys named Keith, Donald and an older one. Joined over the entry were two more terraces, one owned by Jim Millington and his wife and next door was a lady named Dolly, who I think was a relation of theirs. Across the road were the Moffats and just down the lane were the Ellis kids, Alan and Ann. I still occasionally see Ann in The Gate at Swanwick although she won’t remember me. Somewhere near the Ellis family were a couple of brothers named Bowskill. I bumped into one of them when I became a Cabinet Member at the County Council. He was “significant” in Children’s Services. At the end of the street was West’s (Wessers) corner shop where I was sent to buy grandads Capstan Full Strength or Senior Service. On the opposite corner was Abbots...in my young eyes a “posh” shop.

Turning left between the two shops led to Sleetmoor Lane. On the left hand side was a friend of grandma’s who, apparently, “suffered with her nerves”. Nobody spoke of depression and anxiety back then. Across the road and facing Sleetmoor Lane was the Salem Chapel and as you turned right onto Sleetmoor Lane you soon arrived at the Coop. I remember the loose tea and butter and the fantastic hand operated bacon slicer. There was no self-service back then. Somercotes seemed to have everything. Swains Bus Garage, Alec Smalley’s Barber Shop...years before that “modern upstart” Gary Birch arrived. Next door was ace bike mechanic Tommy Sims. Working back up the other side I recall the Derbyshire Building Society, the wool shop where you could “put wool by” until you could afford it, Billy Fletchers Snooker Hall. Then up to the main road with Edgar White Jewellers, Tarlton Shoes, Burnett Toys and Beastall’s pop factory. I remember pop coming out on carts through the archway. Then back down the entry, past Dickie Skinners shop to Coupland Place. There were as many pubs as houses and they all seemed busy. Were they happy days? Well I never remember being sad or miserable. It was pretty much my grandparents world. Nobody went very far in those days apart from the factory or the pit.

It truly was a different world!

RIPLEY & DISTRICT HERITAGE TRUST

JUBILEE AS IT USED TO BE The celebrations in July may be the only occasion we have marked 70 years of a monarch’s reign, but they won’t be the first for a Jubilee.

The Volunteer band played in the Market Place all afternoon, and the Crossley family provided a “meat tea” for 150 old people in the Public Hall.

On Tuesday 22nd June 1897, 125 years ago, the people of Ripley, along with the rest of the country, shut up shop and prepared for a holiday to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, 60 years after she came to the throne.

At 10pm rockets were set off and a bonfire was lit in the fields off Heage Road: the Butterley Company provided 1500 (yes, 1500) railway sleepers to build it, and it could be seen for miles around.

On the Sunday, the actual anniversary, there were special Church services and a United Sunday Schools demonstration in the Market Place, with banners and the Ripley Silver band playing. The holiday, though, was on the Tuesday. The streets were covered in bunting and shops competed for the most patriotic window display. At 3pm, the Butterley detachment of the Sherwood Foresters marched from their headquarters to the Market Place, headed by the Volunteer Band. Each man received a shilling in the Queen’s honour.

To round off the day, then as now, there were celebrations in the traditional manner: the pubs stayed open till midnight!

At 4pm a free tea was provided for all the town’s children in their respective schools, and each child received a mug, made by Bournes of Denby Pottery, and a medal made by Rylands of Birmingham. After the tea there were games on the Derby Road and Butterley Hall fields, and nuts, oranges and sweets were distributed.

Some Interesting Revelations

Having had numerous conversations with George over the years, latterly concerning his grandad, Horace Twigg’s time as a stalwart of the once famous Hilcote Hacademicals, I asked him one day if Horace had always worked at the B Winning Colliery. It came as no surprise to hear that he had. Apparently, Horace was born in 1877, a couple of years after the pit was sunk. His dad, who had worked in a number of jobs prior to then, including Leech Collector, Lamplighter, Tosher, Chimney Sweep and Mudlark - go on – check them out - was one of the first to be employed by the Blackwell Company when B Winning opened. He so enjoyed his work as a collier that, from the day he was born, and despite his mother’s best wishes, the young Twigg (perhaps the original Twiglet?) was destined for a working life underground. Like his Dad, Horace was a contented collier, but was determined that his own children would have an education giving them the opportunity for a career with minimum danger, and in particular, eliminate the need for a scrub in an old tin bath in front of a roaring fire at the end of the working day. In George’s case, he became an EO (Executive Officer) in the Civil Service working for the Ministry of Labour, a forerunner of the modern day DWP, Department for Work & Pensions. I was intrigued on hearing this and suggested he must have a few tales to tell of his time working in that role. You’ll not be surprised to read that he didn’t let me down! Be warned - this might be one of many. “Well Mike”, he began, “there was the time I was working in one of the Derbyshire offices to the

north east of here. Confidentiality prevents me from saying exactly which, but in anagram form it’s Sir, Rob, He Ok”. Not too difficult to work out then? “A woman came in for an interview one day as she was concerned about the amount of benefits she was receiving. A single mother, the conversation went as follows”. Me – “So Chardonnay, it says here that you have ten children? Woman – “Yes”. Me – “Ten? Gosh, they must be a handful”. Woman – “I manage”. Me – “Can I have their names please?” Woman – “Darrell, Darrell, Darrell, Darrell, Darrell, Darrell, Darrell, Darrell, Darrell & Darrell”. Me – “All named Darrell? Surely that can’t be right?” Woman – “It is, and It’s really very convenient. If I want them to come inside for their tea, I simply yell ‘Darrell, it’s teatime’ and they all come in. If they’re playing with their food, I just need to say ‘Darrell, stop messing with your tea’ and they all eat up. When it’s bedtime, I just yell, ‘Darrell, get to your bed’ and off they go”. Me – “......but what if you want to talk to them individually?” Woman – “That’s no problem at all. I just use their surnames”.

Book Review

My Mess is a Bit of a Life – yes you did read that correctly – is how author Georgia Pritchett described herself to a friend – meaning of course to say it the other way round. But then she thought, actually it makes sense that way. Her book is subtitled Adventures in Anxiety. Now you may be one of those god-like creatures who doesn’t have the Worry Worm peering over your shoulder at just about every opportunity. In that case this book is probably not for you – except perhaps to see how the other half lives and count yourself blessed. But for the rest of us mortals Ms Pritchett’s account of her life will probably give you glorious moments of recognition, amusement, entertainment and maybe the odd gulp in the throat. It’s not by any stretch a self help book. Some of her little chunks of her early life might be a bit much – after all most children can be a little out of water and strange, but as she moves into adulthood, she really starts to hit the button. And her descriptions of later family life make you think it’s no wonder she suffered from anxiety. It may not be your life, but it’s often stuff you can relate to. So, not for everyone, but it’s funny and sad at the same time. And wrapped up in a real skill for writing. As you’d expect from someone who has been writing for comedians such as Graham Norton and programmes including The Thick of It and Have I got News for You.

Wherever you are across the region this is a great time to be a wildlife gardener. Of course the flocks of birds visiting the wintertime feeders have dropped away but if is still worth keeping food out if you want to attract a variety of species into the garden. Where your garden is does of course make a big difference to what you might expect, but anywhere can be made attractive with a little effort. Now, as winter has eventually ended the spring is a good time to reap the dividends of a little forward planning. Things do change but at present the best foods seem to be sunflower hearts for finches and titmice, and fat-balls for long-tailed tits, but also jackdaws and magpies. The great spotted woodpeckers love peanuts and that seems to be their staple at the birdtable. However, the absolute winner is my idea of low-cost apples spiked onto either specially pruned cotoneaster bushes or else onto the metal prongs of bird-feeders. These are a tremendous magnet for many different small birds from robins and blackbirds, to blue tits, great tits, and blackcaps. I also get ring-necked parakeets but maybe that is for another article. In recent years, there have been winners such as goldfinches, and losers like greenfinches. The latter have suffered from a nasty viral disease and numbers plummeted. However, it does seem that there is a bit of a revival and I now have three pairs visiting regularly. These are along with two pairs of siskins, which is nice and also a pair of chaffinches. Other regular birds at the feeders are the great spotted woodpeckers with the female proving more

bold and coming down closest to the house. I am looking forward to the red-capped juveniles in the middle of the summer. A pair of nuthatches also visits and you can hear their loud songs and calls in the nearby woodland. In recent weeks, the evening chorus in woods and gardens has been growing with mistle thrushes, song thrushes, blackbirds, robins, and great tits. These are now joined by blackcaps and chiffchaffs with woodpeckers drumming intermittently in the background. I also had a garden warbler visit but so far didn’t hear it sing. With all this activity it is hardly surprising that our gardens are visited by the local sparrowhawks; but more remarkable I think are the common buzzards which seem to get bolder each year. A few weeks back our local birds came down and landed in the wood only a few yards from the garden, and then this week there were three pairs low overhead and dive-bombing each other. This is an amazing recovery from just a few decades back when, along with ravens and peregrines, they were extinct across the Peak. It is so exciting to have them back. It also seems that the red kite population in the Peak District and north Derbyshire is on a steady upward track. Now this is a bird which is both stunning and potentially bold. I expect them to be visiting gardens in the region anytime soon.

Gardener’s Calendar

May is traditionally planting out time when the tender bedding finds its home for the summer.

Later in the month is probably better unless you’re in a sheltered spot, as late frosts can be lethal. Baskets and containers do well with good quality compost, a slow release fertiliser and water retaining crystals for dry periods. But don’t overdo it with the latter otherwise it will look like you’ve got a mass of frogspawn among your flowers. Wall growing or ground cover plants such as aubrietia and alyssum can now be given a haircut after flowering to encourage new growth and perhaps more flowers. If you’ve bought tomato seedlings or even those little pot versions don’t be tempted to transplant them into their final growbag or pot yet. Toms like tight shoes, their roots don’t thrive on large amounts of compost and their roots can rot. So, leave it a while. If you like forget me nots, leave them be after flowering. Otherwise pull

at least some out. They self-seed like mad and will take over next year’s spring garden.

If you’re trimming hedges, make sure there’s no birds’ nests inside – they often nest in even quite low hedges.

View from the Allotment

Well, I needn’t have worried about waterlogging (see last month’s View) as the black and red currant and gooseberry bushes on our plot are in bud with bright green leaves beginning to appear. I get quite excited by the realisation that the plants are waking up again for another year. The chap with the mini-vineyard says that he can’t tell yet whether his vines have survived as swelling of buds won’t start until the weather has warmed up a bit more. Apparently, another plot holder has planted a few grapevines. The spinach I planted three weeks ago has germinated and is now growing fast. I had better get another row in for succession. Time to put another row of broad beans in as well. If you haven’t got much space try The Sutton, a dwarf broad bean that crops really well and is only 30 or so cm high. Parsnips went in a month ago. I used taped parsnip seed, as with a wobbly hand due to Parkinson’s, sowing seeds evenly is quite a problem. I have taped carrot seed too and am sowing them in raised beds. I made a bad mistake last year by scattering a whole packet of parsnip seed all over a 4’ square raised bed. Of course the parsnips crowded each other out so we only got a few decent parsnips and though I tried to dig all the roots out at the end of the season some were missed - they are now sending up leaves in the raised bed I want for carrots. One plant that is going crazy is rhubarb. I should have divided the plant during the winter but it’s too late now so we will just have to eat it or give some away. My allotment book describes April as ‘the lull before the storm’ because May is when things really begin to take off as daylight hours increase and the soil warms up. For sweetcorn lovers it’s time to get some seed started in pots under cover as this plant needs a long growing season. For information about plot availability on the LBLAA site call our plot bailiff Mick on 07725402033 to arrange a viewing.
