Simpson Furniture Ltd are thrilled to announce the opening of their new showroom in Buxton. Located in the former M&S site on Spring Gardens, they hope this will bring new investment and retail outlets to the town. With current access by Waitrose in the Springs Shopping Centre, and in the near future, access directly from the street on Spring Gardens, they are very excited about their future in Buxton.
As a family-owned independent business, they see themselves as a ‘friendly face’ in the furniture business. As Karen says, “we do things a little differently here; we don’t adhere to high pressure sales tactics, instead we prefer to furnish you with all the information you need in order to make an informed decision”.
Aiming to offer quality products at a fair price, they are proud of their support for suppliers using sustainable wood whilst minimising waste and maximising recycling.
Sourcing suites & chairs directly from UK manufacturers where possible and building great working relationships, have helped create a reliable supply chain. Additional leather suites from high quality Italian manufacturers are sourced to complement their wide choice for customers of all tastes. Carrying a wide range of Lift & Tilt chairs in stock for immediate delivery has proved invaluable to customers when family members are being released from hospital etc. “Being a customer focused business, we do all we can to support our friends”.

Recollections of A Simpler Time
When I was a girl, the annual holiday was an important event. I didn’t know anyone who went abroad. The destinations were usually Mablethorpe or “Skeggie” and dates were always during ‘factory fortnight’. My parents, grandparents, brothers, and I stayed in a guest house where the whole of the town and beach could be accessed on foot. I remember the weather being usually sunny and windy although on the rainy days, you had a good time whether you liked it or not! Some of my fondest memories are of my grandad in a three-piece suit on the beach with rolled up trouser legs and a knotted hanky on his head. We took walks along the front eating a scalding hot pot of mushy peas with mint sauce. My granny was the only one brave enough to enjoy the slimy welks, cockles and the like. Most of the time for the men, was spent in the “club” where the beer was cheap and plentiful. The women played endless games of bingo where the numbers would be crossed out with shutters that gave a satisfying click. My memories come alive with smells, tastes, textures, and images of knitted bathing costumes which sagged hopelessly when emerging from the sea, sandcastles, saucy postcards, dribbling ice cream cones, burning hot sand on the beach, and going to sleep with a big sticky grin on my face.

HOME IMPROVEMENTS AQUARIUS AT CHESTERFIELD
The Aquarius nightclub on Sheffield Road in Chesterfield first opened in 1972 as a cabaret club. It played host to some of the biggest stars of that era. The club was the brainchild of JD Williamson, who also had entertainment businesses on the East coast. Local lad, Bernie Clifton, not only compered at the Aquarius but also booked the acts. From Cannon and Ball to Marti Caine and Bob Monkhouse, the Aquarius welcomed the big names in show business. By the 1980s, the Aquarius was more popular for its nightclub, enjoying a packed house every weekend. Coaches full of revellers would turn up from around the region for a night out here. The Aquarius finally closed its doors in 1999 – the end of an era. Nearly a quarter of a decade later, a project is now underway to celebrate the Aquarius’ importance as a nightclub in Chesterfield. Hundreds of rare and never seen before images are to be restored and digitised. This collection is from the former Aquarius photographer, David Miller, who has agreed to work with us at Dirty Stopouts and Derbyshire Record Office to make these images publicly available. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will train volunteers in cataloguing the collection. • Are you interested in volunteering? • Would you like to help catalogue this rare collection? • Would you like to learn new skills in archive work at Derbyshire Record Office? FULL TRAINING WILL BE PROVIDED FOR FREE.
We’re also looking at adding names and information to these unseen photos that will be posted on ‘Picture the Past’ website. Do you have memories and stories about the Aquarius? We’re collecting oral history stories of former staff, party goers and hopefully people who performed at the Aquarius.
Please get in touch if you have anything you would like to share about the Aquarius and ‘the good old days’.

It’s hard to believe that homosexuality was still considered a crime in the UK right up until 1967 when it was decriminalised…or so the story goes. Yet a closer look at the laws relating to homosexual relationships shows that 1967 was only the start. It is estimated that 15,000-plus gay men were convicted in the decades that followed the 1967 liberalisation, and the age of consent was only reduced to 16, the same as for heterosexuals, in 2001. It took Northern Ireland a further 8 years to catch up.
The last remaining laws relating to gay sex were not repealed (in England and Wales) until 2003, when “the gross indecency law” passed in 1885, and the criminalisation of sodomy were finally wiped from the legal pantheon. The gross indecency law was the one used to convict Alan Turing (the man who helped crack the German Enigma Code in WW2) and was the reason the playwright Oscar Wilde was jailed in 1895. Northern Ireland did not repeal the sodomy law until 2008 and Scotland not until 2013 - meaning that gay sex did not cease to be a criminal act in the UK as an entirety until a mere 9 years ago!
In the face of such inequality, it’s hardly surprising that gay men and the wider LGBTQ community have felt the need to celebrate their identities, and nowhere is this better expressed than in the various Pride marches that take place around the country. Of course, the LGBTQ community is not comprised simply of gay men; lesbian women, bisexual people and transgender individuals also stand up for their rights to love anyone they like without fear of persecution.
If you’ve never witnessed a Pride march, I recommend you find one and go along - no need to march with the participants, just be a part of the crowd and enjoy the spectacle. Whilst still advocating for LGBTQ rights, the marches are an explosion of colour and joy and a celebration of diversity.

At the end of the day, whatever your personal opinion is of Pride, gay rights, or LGBTQ - every person on the planet deserves to live a peaceful life with people they love. What goes on behind closed doors, as long as consensual, is really no one else’s business…is it?

Book Review
If you are tempted to think politics is boring, read Sasha Swire’s Diary of an MP’s Wife – Inside and
Outside Power.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Corbynista or Boris’s biggest fan, this is a fascinating, knowledgeable, gossipy, funny and sometimes startling account of the Cameron years of government and beyond. Sasha Swire is the wife of former Tory MP Sir Hugo Swire and for 20 years she kept a diary of the goings on at the highest level of government. But she was no typical political wife, standing silently and steadfastly one step behind her husband or flower arranging for constituency dinners. As a former journalist, old habits die hard and she had her mental notebook at her side through it all. She and Hugo were close chums of the Camerons – would be interesting to know if they still are – and her insights into the crises, jokes, nicknames and behind the scenes snarkiness of that set of people are very revealing of the characters and events of the time. The book is set against a backdrop of boozy dinners at Chequers and weekends in Cornwall, but amidst the truly funny political gossip is a fiercely political understanding. Her father was former Secretary of State for defence Sir John Knott and from childhood she’s known her way round politics. She’s sceptical, but she applies that to friends and foes alike. It goes without saying that the book is indiscreet and outrageous – George Osborne is Boy George, the Camerons along with the rest of the country called Theresa May the Maybot, Michael Gove comes out of everything pretty badly and Dominic Cummings, she says, is someone who thinks he is more important than he is and looks “like one of those amoebas you find in jars in school science labs”. And after he’d resigned from parliament David Cameron retreated to watching box sets of Game of Thrones in front of the telly. No more spoilers. The dedication to her husband reads “Sorry”. - If you’re a reader you won’t be.
