RIPLEY AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB & LIFESAVERS CELEBRATES 50th ANNIVERSARY

“To teach as many people as possible to find pleasure in, and be safe in and around water”

That simple desire by Frank Mansey back in 1973, led to the formation of The Ripley Swim Club. What followed was a natural progression towards competitive swimming, to swim against other clubs albeit at a very low level. The number of requests to hold lifesaving lessons increased and soon there was enough interest to form a Life Saving section in the club. In 1985, the club’s name was changed to Ripley Amateur Swimming Club and Life Savers or simply, ‘RASCALS’. Frank Mansey’s name is firmly cemented in the club’s history and his contribution to the club is celebrated annually with the Frank Mansey Open Meet. As we launch into 2023, it is with immense pride that RASCALS celebrates its 50th year, its Golden Anniversary! Those 50 years have seen hundreds of members benefit from joining the club. For some, the reward has been in learning how to swim, for others, in learning how to save a life and for those with competitive spirit and talent, success has come in the form of trophies, medals and personal bests at numerous annual competitions and galas. Indeed, at RASCALS, the joined-up approach between the Swimming and Lifesaving disciplines creates a unique opportunity for sporting success at Regional, National and International Level. Past and current swimmers/lifesavers/ coaches have represented Great Britain on a number of levels - the postponed 2020 Olympics in Toyko, the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and most recently, the 2022 World Lifesaving Championships at Riccione, Italy. Yet despite unprecedented success on the World stage, RASCALS still maintains its reputation for being a ‘family club’. Children have joined the club because their parents were once ‘Rascals’ themselves, swimmers have progressed through the ranks and become Coaches themselves!

A very exciting year of events ahead, the RASCALS 50th Anniversary Open Meet kicks off 2023 at Matlock pool (7th/8th January). Look out for our new anniversary limited edition kit!

Fifty years has seen a lot of people work and volunteer tirelessly for the club. RASCALS would like to thank all those individuals who have made the club what it is today – a club that has gone from strength to strength but still steeped in those same values that were laid out all those years ago!
