This month we have a lovely walk with some excellent views of the Amber Valley. As usual there will be plenty of chances to let your dog off the lead but take care on roads and around livestock. We have walked around a large part of the local countryside in the past year or so but if there are any hidden gems you think we have missed please let us know. This month we had a request for a disabled access walk, so if you know of any please get in touch. 10 Book Review - The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald If you haven’t seen the movie of The Great Gatsby (or even if you have), it’s worth taking a look at F Scott Fitzgerald’s original book, to see what all the fuss was about. It’s been described as the Great American Novel and it may well be somewhere in the running – certainly it vividly recreates an almost mythical world which is beyond most people’s memory – the Jazz Age of lappers, wild parties on Long Island, excess and decadence.

American dream. The narrative is a strong one – it’s a good read; but the real strength in the book is the atmosphere and a growing sense of the emptiness of wealthy America – at least in that period, but maybe there’s echoes of it in the canyons of today’s celeb-land.

The book is one which has grown in stature since its publication in 1925 – in the irst year it sold only 20,000 copies and had very mixed reviews. One thing we should be grateful for - Fitzgerald changed the name of the The story of millionaire Jay Gatsby and book before it was published. Originally his love affair with the shallow, self absorbed Daisy Buchanan is narrated by it was going to be called Trimalchio in Nick Carraway, a young man who comes West Egg. – can’t see that becoming a into their rich, pampered circle - so we blockbuster movie... always get an outsider’s view of the

South Normanton Safer Neighbourhood update

The South Normanton and Pinxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team have a new face on patrol. PCSO Becky Davis, who has been a PCSO for four years, has swapped areas with PCSO Vicky Hill, who is now covering the Heanor, Smalley and Shipley areas. She joins PC Pete Wilbourne, PC Chris Wilkinson and PCSO Marrion Jeffery, who cover the South Normanton, Pinxton and Broadmeadows area. Before becoming a PCSO, 23-year-old Becky worked in the force control room for a year and volunteered as a Special Constable. Since moving onto the South Normanton and Pinxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, PCSO Davis has been out on patrol, getting to know the local community and visiting local schools. PCSO Davis said: “It is great to be working on such a positive, proactive and community focussed team and I have been busy getting to know the local residents. I hope to be able to use and build upon my skills and experience as a PCSO to help target the issues and concerns that matter to the residents of South Normanton and Pinxton.” You can contact PCSO Davis and her colleagues by calling 101, the non emergency number for Derbyshire police, or emailing: alfreton.neighbourhoods@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk. Gardeners Calendar - June We’ve got summer – the season’s ofHicially here! No matter what the weather, the amount of light means everything in the garden is going mad – and this year it all seems to be happening together. If you’ve got gaps in Hlower beds it’s not too late to plant fast growers such as calendula and nigella. Hellebore seed can be gathered – split ripe seed heads and plant immediately – after a cold winter they’ll burst into life – but they’ll almost certainly turn out a different colour to the parent plant. Cut oriental poppies back to ground level after Hlowering. This encourages new growth – and possibly new Hlowers and creates space in borders. You can also take out Hlowering heads of euphorbia once they’ve Hlowered – cut back to the ground – to prevent mildew.

Top Tip This is a good time for pinching out to get better growth – both tomatoes and plants such as chrysanths and even surHinias and begonias beneHit. It means you have a bit less Hlower immediately but a much bushier and more heavily Hlowering plant as the summer progresses.
