Welcome to Amber Valley Voice Hello & Welcome to this months AVV...I don’t know if I dare say this, as I have been saying it for the last couple of editions but I think Spring may have finally sprung!!

Don’t forget to mention the Voice when you use any of the companies in this Magazine

The front cover is a local picture (I wonder where that is!!) and has been submitted by local photographer, Alec Malbon. For more information on Alec, visit his website...www.alecmalbonphotography.com. We have some new features this month. Carla has been working hard to produce the out & about diary on pages 16 & 17. If you have any groups that you would like included in this, drop Carla an e-mail on the address below.

Carla and I have also been out for Afternoon tea and written all about it on page 2...don’t forget to take your voucher, it really is worth a visit. And finally, to celebrate this amazing phenomenon that is the appearance of Spring, Heather from Body & Sole is offering you the chance to WIN a free manicure. All you need to do is answer the questions on page 15 and e-mail them to me and the first name out of the hat on the closing date wins...this really is an offer too good to refuse!! As always, keep sending your community updates, pictures, recipes, walks etc in...if you have a message that you want everybody to know about, we can shout it out for you!! Gardeners Calendar - April Although most gardens will be at least two to three weeks if not more behind a normal spring things can catch up very quickly. So… Make sure containers and pots have not dried out. We’ve had snow but not a lot of consistent rain and it’s easy to forget that cold does not always equal wet. Re-pot pot bound plants. If you lift them and the roots are tightly bound around the plant to the edge of the pot they need a bigger pot with new compost. Try teasing some of the roots out to encourage them to spread. Prune slightly tender plants such as lavender and penstemons. Cut above fresh new shoots – don’t cut back into hard wood.

Top Tip It’s tempting to sort out your lawn as soon as possible and raking out dead grass and debris is a good idea but delay re-seeding until there’s a bit of consistent warmth otherwise germination is likely to be slow and patchy.

Well, I suppose we have all been there and we totally empathise with Gary’s situation but having read this...I thank my lucky stars that I wasn’t in the Peacock household on Friday 29th March!! See if this months rant on TV listings floats your boat!! When was the last time you heard someone say there's 'nothing on the tele'? Well there is in fact plenty on the old goggle box, it's just that the majority of it is a pile of pooh. Wall to wall sameness, with the channels all copying what are perceived to be successful formats. It's Friday 29th of March, a quick scan of the early evening treats includes, the 'Great British Menu' at 7 on BBC2 followed by 'MasterChef' at 8 on BBC1, thank the Lord for ITV, oh no, they've got 'Food Glorious Food', also on at 8. Well there's always Channel 4, who when they started out promised us something different, so what is their offering at 8 o'clock? You guessed it, Come bloody dine with me. I'm lucky I've got a skybox in the back room so I might watch last week's Saturday morning kitchen.

Then what to watch on the Saturday night? The choice is Singing on thin ice with Maria and Simon Cowell or Big sister Y chromosome factor with a celebrity dancing hamster in the jungle. Aren't Ant, Dec and Cheryl smashing though? Changing Rooms leads to Sixty Second Makeover and the supposed 'Comedy' panel shows seem to be a repetition of the same tax avoiding funny people. Drivel, drivel and more drivel, I'm sure it was better when we only had 3 channels, for some reason it felt like there was more choice - very strange.

So are there decent programmes on? Well I think so, and it's mainly the American stuff that I enjoy, Homeland, The Wire, The Sopranos and more recently The Following, which is all about a cereal killer who choked his What's really surprising about all this is that wife with corn$lakes. For once my opinions nobody seems to cook anymore, there ought may be wrong, because the BBC wouldn't to be a programme about going to the super- waste licence payers' money making and market and the problems of picking up a copying rubbish programmes, would they? ready meal that doesn't need to be stirred And so to the great hope of British comedy, during the microwaving process, even Miranda. I $ind her about as funny as a mild better would be a sitcom that centres on a tummy upset. Awful, absolutely awful, strange family and their arguments over the apparently she says that Eric Morecombe Saturday choice of takeaway, Indian or was an in$luence on her early career, well Chinese? And if it is to be an Indian, the Miranda I think you must have watched him which curry house should have their busiwith the sound turned off. And $inally apoloness. Oh the trials of modern family life. gies for looking forward to Spring in the last issue. Did I get that wrong? If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact either Emily on info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or 01773 604178/ 07891 639638 or Carla on Carla@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk, 07896294512.
