Pentrich Historical Society
Pentrich Historic Society meets on the third Tuesday of each month, September through to June, at Pentrich Village Hall. Each meeting begins at 7.30 pm and everyone is welcome. Tel: 07762 243202 Film Review - Argo When I saw that Argo had received the Best Film Oscar but none of the other directing or acting goings, I confess I jumped to the conclusion that this was one of those times when a film had been given the award as it was perceived as ‘worthy’ rather than just because it was brilliant. Now I have seen the film I’m happy to say I was wrong, Argo deserves all the accolades it gets. Argo tells the story of a CIA plot to extract a group of American diplomats from revolutionary Iran, using the guise of a Hollywood film crew scouting for a location. As an ‘against all odds’ story the prerequisite is an implausible plan with little hope of success, and as one CIA man remarks “This is the best bad idea we have, by far”. This is a great example of how Affleck as director builds tension, as the hopelessness of the situation is cleverly manipulated to fuel the hope of the audience.
Tension is a key component in the success of a film of this type. Of course it helps to have a brilliant true story; however obscure satellite TV channels are filled with examples of how hard it is to turn a great story into a great film. As the tension grows the film is littered with enough humour to give the audience a chance to draw breath. That is until it begins to build towards a dramatic climax, which genuinely keeps you on the edge of your seat as you hope for a Hollywood ending. If this is an example of Ben Afflecks future career as a director then I look forward to seeing more. It’s clear he knows how to tell a story from his joint scriptwriting Oscar for Good Will Hunting but his ability to create a visual piece that conveys a mood and atmosphere is impressive. What’s more he carries this off whilst playing the lead role of the CIA agent behind the plot, Tony Mendez, with subtle depth.

You’re a 15-year-old and your parents suddenly do something completely out of character. Something which changes their lives and yours in an instant. Something which you could never foresee. After all when you’re a child nothing changes, it seems, for ever. Canada by Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Ford starts with the lines “First I’ll tell about the robbery our parents committed. Then about the murders which happened later.” This is the story of Dell Parsons. The bank robbery his Mum and Dad commit in 1960s small-town Montana is ridiculous. But desperate. And this one event defines Dell for the rest of his life. His parents are captured almost immediately. In a sense it’s Dell who’s on the run. And once you’re pushed outside, once the lines have been crossed, it may be hard to know what’s right and what’s not. We think of people who commit crimes as being somehow different and bad. Maybe they can also be ordinary people who get into the wrong place, suggests this novel. The suspense in this book comes from wanting to know what happens to Dell; the story is all in his words. The big events happen somewhere else but it’s a powerful examination of events overtaking a life, of the uncertainty of growing up, of how strangely a person’s life can turn out.

Leek, Potato and Stilton Soup

I’ve been making this soup for several years now and it’s so delicious and easy to make that even the husband voluntarily makes it from time to time!
Ingredients 25g butter 2 leeks 250g potatoes (peeled and chopped into chunks) 1.2 litres hot vegetable stock 2 bay leaves 100ml single cream 125g Stilton Salt and pepper to season Melt the butter into a large pan, add the leeks and soften. Add the potatoes, stock and bay leaves and season with a little salt and pepper. Cover with a lid and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 minutes until the potatoes have softened. Stir in the cream and stilton until the stilton has melted. Remove the bay leaves and blend using a hand blender ………..voila!

There are lots of opportunities to let your dog off the lead but there is one small stretch of road to walk along so take good care. The route will take around 2 1/2 to 3 hours. It is fairly undulating and the terrain can be muddy and uneven so a good pair of boots are a must. 1. Park in the free car parking spaces at Alfreton Park and begin the walk on the bridle path near the entrance that takes you around the outside the park up to Alfreton Hall. 2. Where the path crosses another turn right, heading around the back of Alfreton Hall and join up with Church Street. Walk past the Leisure Centre and take the next left towards St Martins Church. 3. At the church follow the path left that takes you towards the entrance and then take the flagstone path around the outside of the church before crossing a stile. 4. Take the bridle track straight ahead and follow it until it meats a metal gate. Cross the stile and turn left continuing along the track as it veers right and takes you across a bridge. 5. Walk straight ahead to the corner of the r field and cross the stile. Turn right and ader e R e walk up to the corner of the next field Off again crossing a stile. Follow the path along side the fence as it takes you up to towards the farm buildings. 6. When you reach the farm building turn left onto the track then right heading up past the houses and onto a single track road. 7. Carry on along the road until you reach the Shirland Golf Club entrance. Walk down, past the club house and join a bridle with every purchase of path at the end of the car park. At the Millers Complete Dog Food signposted crossroads take the path on the with this coupon left that takes you around the outside of the golf club. 8. At the end of the path cross a stile on your right and walk uphill on the outside of the field. Halfway up the hill cross a stile on your left and cross the field to a gap in the fence. Turn right and carry on uphill.

9. At the road cross the stile and turn left taking great care as you walk along the road into Toadhole Furnace. At the pub cross the road to use the pavement and carry on along the B6013 Belper Road. Cross the road again to use the pavement. After passing over the bridge cross to the right hand side of the road and take a stile by a metal gate. 10. Follow the right hand track across the field and take a stile in the middle of the hedge. Carryon straight across the next field towards another stile located above the house. 11. Walk down the steps and cross the road with care. Turn left and take a path signposted on the right after the house. 12. Pass through a gate and walk along the path, with the wall on your right. Cross a stile and continue across another field. At the corner take the gated path into the next field. Carry straight on and cross a stile before turning left and following a path uphill. At the top of the field pass behind an old ruined building and cross the stile. 13. Walk along the path to the main road and take care as you cross. To the left of a road sign cross a stile by a metal gate. Walk through the farmyard and coss the stile on the right by the red gate. 14. Turn left and walk along the path with the hedge on your left through 4 fields. Cross the stile at the end of the path and cut across the field on the path to join the wide farm track that takes you back towards St Martins Church. From here you can reverse your route back to Alfreton Park. This walk is for illustrative purposes only. PC Mark Gibbs, PC Chris Anthony, PCSO Meikel Miller, PCSO Mark Rogers and PCSO Chris Bannister are the Somercotes and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. We are led by Sgt. Stacey Hamlett and our team is dedicated to targeting community concerns, keeping the area safe and reducing anti-social behaviour. In this edition of Amber Valley Voice, we would like to remind people to pay a little attention to your shed or garage security as it won’t be long before we will all be tidying the garden or making the most of the nicer weather. By taking just a few steps you can help to reduce the potential of their outhouses being targeted by an opportunist thief. The most important thing to do is to make sure your garage, shed or outhouse is secured using a good quality lock. Take a look around what you store in your shed. Bicycles, power tools and other equipment could be costly to replace so chain valuable items to a strong anchor point on the ground. Mark equipment using a forensic property marking fluid and register them with a secure database such as Immobilise (www.immobilise.com) to help police trace them back to you should they be stolen and recovered. Consider installing security lighting which is triggered by movement or an alarm. Never leave items unattended and insecure. Even items which you don’t think are worth stealing could be valuable to a potential thief who may take the opportunity to use your ladders or tools to break into a property. Finally, if you are out in the garden make sure your home is secure. Make sure all your ground floor windows and doors are closed and locked so that your home can’t be targeted while you are distracted. Remember to report any suspicious activity and if you would like advice, or have any concerns you would like to discuss then contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team by calling 101, the non-emergency number for Derbyshire police.

This Jiu-Jitsu club was founded in 1991 in the Chesterfield area by John Rake and he still runs clubs in Chesterfield, Derby, Mansfield and now Alfreton. Jiu-Jitsu is a fantastic self-defence martial art for kids of all ages, whether you want to learn self-defence, improve your fitness or simply meet like minded people, this is the club for you. Happy new tax year!
Have you made your new tax year resolutions yet? With 6th April fast approaching this is a great time to assess how you can get the most out of the 2013/14 tax year, whether that is reducing your tax bill or reducing your admin burden.
To cut down on reporting admin, many one-person companies may wish to pay the director just once a year and avoid monthly RTI reporting. If you want to do this, you must first check that your payroll software will cope with an annual payroll, as many main-stream payroll software packages do not.
Spreading household income
The second stage is to understand what reports HMRC will require under RTI. Current HMRC guidance states that an annual payroll must be registered with HMRC and you must use the same month every year. If you don’t register the payroll as being annual you will need to submit an Employer Payment Summary (EPS) to HMRC every month, which shows nil payments made to the employee. Now is a good time to look forward to 2013/14 and assess who will be earning what in your family. The tax free personal allowance limit will increase to £9,440 per person. So if someone in your family is earning less that this their personal allowance is going to waste. There are a few strategies that you may consider to avoid wasting allowances: · Employing your spouse or children in your business · Transfer an income producing asset, such as a rental property or savings account, into the name of your spouse · Ensuring that the higher earner makes all the family gift aid donations The strategies need to be implemented correctly so please contact us for advice before proceeding.
Real Time Information (RTI) From the 6th April RTI will be compulsory for most employers, requiring a Full Payment Submission to be made to HMRC every time an employee is paid rather than just once after the end of the tax year as is currently the case.

Carla outdid herself with her suggestion that I write about life, why are we here? Are we alone? Evolution v's creation etc, well even if I could answer this, I couldn't do it in the 400 words that you and Emily allow me. What I would say is that it's a very strange world where even the Pope is not safe from redundancy, I wonder how the P45 will be delivered. A better bet would have been to talk about her Husband's recent vasectomy, which would be a much shorter tale, I don't think he would have appreciated me going into detail about his private parts, having said that he's been whinging on facebook about the pain of it all, get over it, I've been told that yours was a particularly small operation.
My main gripe this month is about the modern pop combo, One direction, who have absolutely murdered one of my favourite ever songs, Teenage kicks by the undertones, they've mixed it with an old Blondie track and it's absolutely awful. Yes I know it was for charity, but even so I think they should be charged with some form of crime against music. I'd like to see them hung, drawn and quartered, I need to listen to my JLS albums just to get over it.
I was fortunate enough to see the Undertones in 1979 at the Limit club in Sheffield and it is still my favourite concert. So talking of favourites, here's my bestest ever top ten singles. 'Downtown' - Petula Clark, 'The first time ever' - Roberta Flack, 'Heroes' - David Bowie, 'Another girl, another planet' - The Simon Howett asked the question 'If only ones, 'White man in Hammersmith Rotherham is so good, why stay in palais' - The Clash, 'Bizarre love triangle' Swanwick?' I've been asked a variation of this many times, and it centres on me making New order, 'Born slippy' - Underworld, 'I wanna be adored' - The stone roses, 'She's a a quick return to Yorkshire with the odd expletive thrown in. The truth is Swanwick is star' - James, and of course the above mentioned 'Teenage kicks'. Don't think now home, I've been here too long, nearly a third of my life, another 25 years and I might anyone can argue with those groovy tunes, can they? No room for The Beatles/Stones/ be in line for my own seat in the Boot and Specials/Johnny Cash or Abba, but there you. Slipper. Oh, and Liz says she would never I just hope One direction don't see the list, move to Rotherham, she may have a point. horrible boys.
