Welcome to Amber Valley Voice

3

Wow, 3 whole years since the Amber Valley Voice Don’t forget to first landed on your doorstep and I think it is fair to say that it has improved somewhat! Carla made mention the Voice me look at the first edition earlier this month in a when you use any of nostalgic moment and after I’d taken my head out the companies in this of my hands, it was actually frightening how fast it Magazine has flown by! I can honestly say that I love every minute of it, including the monthly deliveries that I still undertake with my mum and dad most months, the pace has dropped but they still have the most competitive rates of all my distributors!!! We have lots of concerts going on this month, so be sure to check out ‘Things to do’ and the community adverts such as Swanwick Baptist Church, Swanwick St Andrews and Alfreton MVC. We have our usual suspects, such as Heather advising us on our beauty treatments and Carol at Leabrooks Gallery who is holding the worlds biggest coffee mornings this month...there are 2 dates, so make sure they go in your diary...it is for a good cause after all. Finally, a big welcome to all the new advertisers, Claire Oldknow, Midlands Kickboxing and AM Bespoke Building Solutions. See you next month,

14 Our mission to bring you the best local walks continues… This time we head north to Bolsover for a great walk with plenty of chances to let your dog off the lead but there are a few roads so take care . Again, we would like to thank the fantastic Jill and David Hallam from JH Legal Services for contributing this lovely walk. If you know of a walk in the local area , please get in touch. Email us at info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638. 4 1/2 mile circular walk from Bolsover with views of Bolsover castle and Sutton Scarsdale Hall A moderate walk for you and your dog which is fairly flat. The route should take around 2 hours. The terrain is fairly even but there may be some muddy areas it is always worth wearing a good pair of boots especially if it has been wet or icy.

1. The walk begins from the car park at the end of Riverside Way, Gateway Business Park, Bolsover. (The Stockley Trail, Carr Vale/Peter Fidler Nature Reserve). To begin go through the gate at the opposite the car park entrance. Continue along the path keeping a metal fence on your left. After some distance you will arrive at a fork in the path. Take the left fork to pass a sculpture on the left. After a short distance cross a lane pass under a bridge. 3. When you arrive at a crossroads of footpaths turn right and pass through a width restrictor then cross over a footbridge. In front of you is a large pond. Go diagonally left and then skirt around the left hand edge of the pond. On the opposite side you will find a marker post and a stile. Cross over the stile and head diagonally left across the field. 4. Continue ahead, heading towards ‘Sutton Scarsdale Hall’ on the horizon. After passing underneath some telegraph wire, keep left of some old stone buildings in the field. At the far edge of the field, turn left along a farm track keeping a fence and the motorway on your der right. Continue until you reach a road. Reaffer O 5. At the road turn right and go over the motorway. Follow the road round to the left and uphill. *At this point, If you wish to take a closer look at Sutton Scarsdale Hall, take the path on the right, half way up the hill* Continue along the road. After the road bends sharp right and then you will see a footpath sign for Heath Village. 6. Take the footpath heading downhill across a field. At the bottom right hand corner of the field, cross with every purchase of a footbridge and then over a stile into another Millers Complete Dog Food field. In this field, head straight uphill. with this coupon 7. At the far end, cross over a stile adjacent to a telegraph pole and onto a lane. Cross straight over the lane through a gate and into another field. Keeping the hedge on your right, go to the bottom of the field to cross another stile. Continue straight ahead to cross another stile onto a lane.

8. Cross over the lane diagonally right, ensuring that in the next field you have the hedge on your left. Head down to the bottom left hand corner of this field. Go through a gap in the fence and cross a footbridge. Go straight ahead and pass through a gap in the boundary of the field. At the far edge of this next field, at a marker post, turn left. Continue along the edge of the field, then immediately after a pylon on your left, turn left down a farm track. 9. Continue straight keeping the hedge on your right. Follow the path as it curves left and right then through a gap into another field and downhill with the hedge on the right. Where the hedge on the right ends continue straight towards the motorway crossing an open field. 10. Cross a stile into cross field and at the far edge turn left keeping the fence on the right. Continue until reaching a lane, then turn right on to the lane to pass under the motorway. 11. Continue ahead to cross an open field. Keep to the right of a pylon and after passing through a gap in the hedge turn left. Follow the hedge around then after a short distance, go over a stile on your left. Go over a footbridge and over a second stile into a field. 12. Cross the field diagonally right, keeping Bolsover Castle straight ahead. In the far right hand corner of the field cross over a footbridge. Go diagonally left across a field and over a stile into a wooded area. After a short distance, go over another stile and into a field. 13. Go diagonally left across the field and then over a stile onto a well laid path (The Stockley Trail). Turn left along the trail until and keep to it until you arrive back at the car park. This walk is for illustrative purposes only. The Amber Valley Voice takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

16 Book Review - Modernity Britain by David Kysnaston History books sometimes seem like heavy going. But Modernity Britain by David Kynaston, which looks at Britain in 1957-9 is actually one of the most entertaining books of the year. Never-had-it-so-good Britain was a place of Carry On films, Caramac and Fairy Snow. Kynaston describes the way we lived just over 50 years ago and it does seem like another country, although there are echoes of today – tabloids obsessing with a “rift” between Prince Philip and the Queen (Charles and Di anyone?) and whether Princess Margaret was going to act like a true Royal or a “half-baked jazz mad Teddy girl” (Harry and Las Vegas?). But can you believe that there used to be a Toddlers Truce on TV – no TV of any kind broadcast between 6-7pm so parents could get the kids to go to bed? Or that newborn

babies were cot-nursed in hospital – which meant they were touched as little as possible for the first 48hours? Fewer than half the homes in Britain had a TV, and water resistant Bronco toilet paper was starting to be overtaken – at least in middle class homes - by the likes of Andrex. Kynaston uses quotes from diaries, bits out of newspapers, TV scripts, to produce a brilliant, often funny and never less than interesting description of life lived by real people. Politicians get a look in, but largely in terms of how they affected ordinary folk and bankers were the local bank manager – the Mr Mannering’s of Dad’s Army not the champagne hoorays of the Square Mile. If you fancy something a bit different as we head into the longer nights this might just fit the bill.

You are invited to visit Leabrooks Gallery, Gardens and Conference Centre to enjoy some of the events it offers to celebrate the last days of Summer and the beginning of Autumn.

The Coffee Shop is the location for the Gallery’s activities when it participates in The World’s Largest Coffee Morning(s) in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on the 27th and 28th September, 2013. Home made cakes, coffee and tea will be on sale and there will also be a raffle, with all of the proceeds being given to the charity. The aim is to make the biggest donation in the three years of involvement which is why.....

While there are still vibrant splashes of colour drawing attention to the flowers in the garden the leaves of the acer collection are subtly underdrawn by darker hues; the trees are getting ready to upstage the floral displays with a spectacular show of crimson. Leabrooks Gallery requests the pleasure of It’s worth a visit just to witness the dramatic, your company. and frequently very sudden, changes. The natural show of colour in the garden is matched by stunning exhibitions of art exhibited inside the Gallery. From the 14th September until the 4th October, 2013 , Arwyn Quick’s bright Derbyshire landscapes convey a rich appreciation of the countryside at its best. These are canvases which have a general appeal whilst retaining a very special local focus. After that, for two weeks at the beginning of October, Lynn Smith’s beautiful floral images take pride of place in the Main Exhibition Room, offering different opportunities for investment. There are, in fact, lots of opportunities for the visitor to make interesting purchases, both small and large, throughout the Gallery: there are unique pieces of jewellery, small sculptures, pottery, pyrography and stained glass as well as a large range of art by a variety of artists. There is also a well stocked section, Leabrooks Interiors, full of quirky items for the home - and there’s a Coffee shop!

Gardeners Calendar - September

25

September’s jobs are often about the seasons to come. Clear dead leaves as they fall – rotting leaves can lead to disease in the garden. Plant out next year’s foxgloves, violas and wallflowers. Keep plants such as rhododendrons and camellias which rely on big fat buds next season in order to flower, well watered now.

Top Tip

If you’re lucky enough to have a good apple crop you can tell if they’re ready to pick by lifting them in the palm of your hand and giving a gentle – not a hard - pull. If they’re ready they’ll come away easily. If not leave them a bit longer to ripen in the autumn sun.

Well, well, well, old motor-mouth has been busy this month! An article for us, a slot on Sally Peppers loud month show on Radio Derby (clearly hanging onto the coat tails of my glory!) and an article in the Chad. This month it seems Gary is trying his hand at fiction‌ So make of it what you will just please remember to take everything he says with a pinch of salt!! Here’s a little story you might enjoy‌. I went into the Gate the other evening for an early doors pint or two, the usual suspects were in as well as a couple of building workers, they were in conversation with a few of the locals and it turned out that they were in the area carrying out surveys for fracking works. What with the furore surrounding this sort of work it wasn't long before the whole pub was having an argument about the rights and wrongs. Some people were pleased that there might be employment opportunities, whilst others were concerned about environmental factors. One of the frackers said that the government had granted their company a licence to survey any Greenfield site that wasn't owned by the National trust. The men were from Birmingham and so couldn't explain the exact positions of the sites that they were to survey, they seemed pleasant enough and in reality were only doing their jobs, so no-one really gave them too much hassle. What peed me off was the fact that the Government can get away with this sort of thing without any apparent debate in Parliament or any discussion in the media. Two days after this I was walking the dogs on the fields behind the Hayes and in the distance, towards Riddings I could see some machinery, I went up and sure enough it's the blokes from the pub with boring equipment taking soil samples. When I got

home I went onto the internet to see if there was anything mentioned about fracking in Swanwick. I couldn't find a thing, but did discover that these tests are being carried out all over the North and Midlands, with little or no community knowledge of what's going on. I decided to try and find out a bit more about it and remembered the logo from one of the workmen's jacket, WMF Ltd turned out to be West Midlands Fracking. I gave the planning dep't at Amber Valley a call and eventually got someone to admit that these permits were genuine. It turned out that the old mining works from the delves pit were ready made reservoirs for any shale gas that was below the old workings. Everything was going through my head at this point, house prices, protests, heavy traffic, the lot. The planner also told me that testing was planned to be carried out on the proposed crematorium site, Cray's hill and the football pitches on Pentrich Rd and Sleetmoor Lane. It's unbelievable that they can do this without some sort of local negotiation with residents and just seem able to ride roughshod over us, without any comeback or communication. And finally just to assure you that none of the above is true, I've made it all up just to try and cause a stir, so apologies if you don't see the funny side.
