I
N July of 2011, I visited Istanbul and Adrasan, a small Mediterranean sea-side village. It was the first time I was able to spent full days taking photos in Turkey.
I had a lot of things imagined before I visited Turkey. Childhood fascination with the Turkish pasha, brief encounter with Turkish students in college years, and many friends from Turkey I have made since. Most important to me is to gain first-hand experience of a contemporary and thriving Muslim society. The Muslim spirits described in the book “History of the soul” by the writer Zhang Chengzhi deeply impressed me in the 90s. I had accumulated an infinite number of questions through the years, and they became more urgent as the global events of the past ten years unfold. It seems all can be sorted out through a visit to Turkey. Nothing prepared me for my visit. At once ancient and modern, one can feel the long, tangled, and proud history, and sense the frustration with the European Union. I visited friends and colleagues, met Turkish merchants and Armenian artisans, stopped by mosques and museums, wandered through shops and markets, and was lost many times in the back alleys. These are snapshots I took in Istanbul and Adrasan, with most photos in Istanbul taken during a one day stay, and photos in or near Adrasan taken sporadically during a few days. Feb-March, 2012, ChungkingExpress I have added more photos I took in Istanbul, June, 2012. I thank WJ for this suggestion.

I
felt excited when ChungKingExpress told me he traveled to Turkey and took some snapshots. Turkey, once the center of Ottoman Empire, is a country I yearn to visit myself. But when I look at the people in these pictures over and over again, I started to forget where they are. You could say people in these pictures have no facial expressions whatsoever, but what I see is calmness, or, to phrase a bit differently, inner peace, an attribute seemingly possessed less and less in modern people’s mind. I truly believe that only those photographers who have the power of inner peace have the power of capturing moments like these. His work feels like a feather, landing on the surface of a peaceful lake, yet making quite some ripples in our heart. -WJ, 2012

Acknowledgement This collection is the outcome of a collaboration with editors Wu Ju and Penguin, which started in August 2010. I am indebted to them for suggesting this topic. Their tireless encouragement and extreme patience made this collection possible. Their generous advice in photo selection, editing, arrangement, and layout is amply reflected in the final product. Of course, all responsibilities of remaining problems are mine alone. -ChungkingExpress-2006, Feb. 2012 I also wish to thank WJ, C80, and evojim for insightful suggestions in editing and typesetting the photos., Li for pointing out the necessity of multimeda, lillywxc for detailed final suggestions on editing. -ChungkingExpress-2006, Feb. 2013

O
ur house was less than a mile from the river, which around there was deep, quiet, and so wide you couldn’t see across it.
I can never forget the day the rowboat was delivered. Father showed no joy or other emotion. He just put on his hat as he always did and said goodbye to us. He took along no food or bundle of any sort. He looked gently at me and motioned me to walk along with him. We headed toward the river together. I felt bold and exhilarated, so much that I said: “Father, will you take me with you in your boat?”. He just looked at me, gave me his blessing, and by a gesture, told me to go back. Father got into the boat and rowed away. Its shadow slid across the water like a crocodile, long and quiet.
