INTERNATIONAL LIFESTYLE STUDIES PREFACE
International Lifestyle Studies is a bachelor program at the Fontys Academy for Creative Industries in the Netherlands. This education focuses on trend research and concept development in the living, appearance, leisure, human movement, health and food industries. Lifestyle students learn to research changes in society. Based on this research, they develop new products and services that will improve the quality of life. Nine weeks prior to Ambiente, the Trend Team carried out extensive research on changes in society and in the living industry. This resulted in the five trends that they present in this Trend Book.
First, you will read a short description of the trend that explains how it originated from developments in our society. Second, you will see a mood board with a matching colour chart. Next, the materials and shapes of the trends will be shown. And last, you will find three manifestations of the trend. During Ambiente 2015 the Trend Team will be manning two stands; one at the entrance of Hall 11.0 and one at the entrance of Hall 4.0. They will give daily Trend Tours and press presentations and they will update their website and social media channels regularly. They hope to see you there!

INTERNATIONAL LIFESTYLE STUDIES BUNDLE
INTERNATIONAL LIFESTYLE STUDIES BUNDLE
With politically related incidents happening everywhere, the world seems like a dangerous place. However this is not true; research reveals that the world is actually safer than it has ever been (Bart de Koning, n.d.). Nevertheless, many people still feel unsafe due to the fact that, in a safe world, accidents and attacks are more noticeable. This is why the feeling of fear dominates our mind and causes us to reach for safe and soothing environments. We feel the need to be embraced and to be calmed down in an intimate setting where all our insecure thoughts will disappear in the material. This trend manifests in knitted, woven and braided materials that are soft and voluminous.

HUG PRACTICE BY CAROLLYNE TJONG AYONG
Carollyne Tjong Ayong has just opened a hug-practice in Amsterdam where you can pay to be hugged. At the same time you can talk, listen to music or just relax and doze off. According to Carollyne, the hugs have an immediate effect. The sessions are for everyone who feels the need to relax or who wants some sincere attention.
This is a product signal of the trend BUNDLE because it shows the longing of people to get hugged and to feel safe. The fact that this hug-practice suddenly appears on the scene substantiates this. The designer’s intention is to make people relax and get the attention they need in the hectic world they live in.
INTERNATIONAL LIFESTYLE STUDIES CRAVING SYMMETRY 15
INTERNATIONAL LIFESTYLE STUDIES CRAVING SYMMETRY
We live in a world where we receive more stimuli than ever before. The non-stop flow of physical and digital incentives causes a restless feeling in our mind. As a result, we are looking for a way to get some order in this chaos. We are creating structure by using a lot of straight lines and basic shapes in modern interiors. The desire to look for these basic silhouettes arises from our early childhood (Vadain, 2014); seeing and recognizing these primary forms creates order and harmony in our head. This trend manifests itself in a lot of straight lines and outlines, geometric shapes and geometric solids.

BRILLIANT CHAIR BY EVA FLY
The Brilliant Chair is a transparent lounge chair recognizable for its geometric shape. The designer wanted to make a chair that was both comfortable and soft, yet still looks very light. Eva Fly (the designer of this chair), chose to use alternative upholstery materials, in order to give this chair a translucent look. The shape of the chair is inspired by the brilliant; it is a transparent object cut in shape to play with light. This is a product signal of the trend CRAVING SYMMETRY because of the geometric basic shapes (triangles) and its light and clean colours. It does not have extra stimuli (like outspoken colours or moving objects), which makes it very rustic.

CUCALU BY DANIEL DISSELKOEN
Cucalu is an app for your smartphone where you can play an interactive game: you are on a mission to find circles, squares and triangles while using your camera and your own eyes. The challenge is to not look at your phone. For example, you start with spotting simple circles. Once you have found one, you open Cucalu to take a photo. Other players can see what shape you just captured and where. They can reward your work and you can rewards theirs as well. This will sharpen your perspective. This is a product signal of the trend CRAVING SYMMETRY because this app literally makes you search for familiar geometric shapes. Recognizing these well-known shapes, will sooth your mind.

By using gold, the designer made this jewelry something that can be desired, while also incorporating our desire for basic shapes.

INTERNATIONAL LIFESTYLE STUDIES PRESTIGE GREEN
We are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that our climate is changing because we are exploiting our natural environment. We are consuming more natural resources than our own ecosystem can regenerate. This is why our sustainable mindset has become the standard. We realize that nature is becoming more scarce and it has emerged as a new luxury good. We respect nature and we want to show this to the rest of the world. Instead of just buying luxury items, we now buy luxury items inspired by nature’s treasures. Nature has become our new symbol of status. This trend manifests itself in enlarged plants and insects in furniture and accessories; nature incorporated into jewelry and displayed behind glass.

INTERNATIONAL LIFESTYLE STUDIES DELUSION 33
INTERNATIONAL LIFESTYLE STUDIES DELUSION
Nowadays we are exposed to an overabundance of products and information. First of all, the overload of similar products causes us to lose our focus (Alexander Chernev, 2011). Our attention is limited and mass production has left the consumers bored. Therefore, we feel the need to be surprised. We are attracted to unique and playful products that draw our attention. Secondly, we’re in a love-hate relationship with accessing information. We’re expecting it to be available anytime and anywhere. But at the same time, we’re craving for a bit of mystery. We’ve had enough of the obvious; we are looking for objects that trigger our imagination. This trend manifests in optical illusions, playful objects with mirrors and bright colours and different points of view.

INTERNATIONAL LIFESTYLE STUDIES MAKING SPACE
INTERNATIONAL LIFESTYLE STUDIES MAKING SPACE
Our daily life is becoming more hectic than ever, and our cities are getting more crowded every day (BBC Future, 2013). Because there is limited space available, we are now using our public and private areas more efficiently by combining different functions. For instance, we started working in cafes and we’re now relaxing in our offices. Moreover, we are combining different elements in our own home. This ensures that people can create flexible areas in their own home, and that dimensions are focussed on m3 instead of m2. This allows for more space, stimulation, inspiration and a better balance between work and relaxation. This trend manifests in movable, foldable and multifunctional interior objects.
